Objective
Prior research on confessions of physical abuse (PA) has explored mechanisms of injury. Little is known about conditions supporting a confession of abuse or how confessions may influence case outcomes.
Methods
This cross-sectional study of suspected PA in children age < 10 years at 10 centers participating in CAPNET, a multicenter child PA research network, included children with in-person Child Abuse Pediatrics (CAP) consultations between Feb 2021-Dec 2022 and excluded children without injury. Our focus was a confession of inflicted injury known to the CAP during clinical involvement. We compared child and clinical characteristics, out-of-home (OOH) placements, and arrests between cases with and without confessions. Multivariable models using generalized estimating equations (GEE) produced adjusted predicted probabilities (APP) clustering by CAPNET site.
Results
Confessions were known to CAPs in 115/4297 (2.7%) cases, with significant site variability. In a multivariable GEE model, confessions were more likely in cases with injuries with high-specificity for abuse (APP 6.0% vs 1.5%, p< 0.001), near-fatality (APP 5.5% vs 2.3%, p< 0.001), and older children (APP 4.8% vs 2.5%, p = 0.025). OOH placements and arrests were more common in cases with confessions. CAP awareness of confessions, OOH placements, and arrests did not follow racial or ethnic patterns seen in the US child welfare system. Lower socioeconomic status was associated with OOH placements and arrests but not CAP awareness of confessions.
Conclusions
Our findings highlight differences in case characteristics and outcomes where a confession is known to the CAP and raise questions about agency …

Type 2-Low Asthma: Epidemiology, Multiomics, And Emerging Therapies, Philip Mendez, Alanis Rosado, Juan Carlos Cardet
Department of Pediatrics Faculty Publications
Purpose of Review
Type 2-low (T2-low) asthma, characterized by low blood and sputum eosinophils and low fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), remains a major unmet need because of frequent corticosteroid insensitivity and a lack of targeted therapies. This review summarizes recent advances in its epidemiology, multiomics, and therapeutic landscape.
Recent findings
T2-low inflammation is highly prevalent, affecting approximately 14%-39% of adults with current asthma and up to 60% of children. Its pathogenesis reflects complex non-T2 mechanisms, including IL-17 signaling, innate immune activation through IL-1β and IL-33, and neutrophilic inflammation. Heterogeneity is further shaped by systemic factors such as obesity and …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder marked by persistent memory impairment and complex molecular and cellular pathological changes in the brain. Current treatments, including acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and memantine, only help with symptoms for a short time and do not stop the disease from getting worse. This is mainly because these drugs do not reach the brain well and are quickly removed from the body. The blood–brain barrier (BBB) restricts the entry of most drugs into the central nervous system; therefore, new methods of drug delivery are needed. Nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems (NTDDS) are widely studied as a potential …

Effective cleaning and sanitation are essential in cheese manufacturing to control microbial contamination and prevent biofilm formation. A multi-step approach was undertaken to assess microbial persistence and cleaning-in-place (CIP) strategies at an industrial Cheddar cheese facility with a production capacity of ∼40,000 tonnes. Pre- and post-CIP environmental swabs were analysed using plate counts and high-throughput (16S rRNA amplicon and shotgun) sequencing to identify microbial hotspots. Traditional CIP was broadly effective, however residual contamination persisted in critical zones such as the Alfomatic weir, curd distribution tank (CDT), and block formers. Industrial-scale trials comparing caustic and acid-based CIP with an enzymatic alternative …

Red-Sensitive Photopolymerizable Glass For Fabrication Of Holographic Optical Elements, Jamshed Aftab, Izabela Naydenova, Tatsiana Mikulchyk
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Water-resistant photopolymerizable glass, which represents a photopolymerizable hybrid sol–gel (PHSG) material, has emerged as a compelling platform for holographic optical elements fabrication (HOEs), owing to its exceptional mechanical and thermal robustness with high holographic recording performance. Until now, PHSG compositions have been limited to blue/green-sensitive systems, despite significant interest in extending sensitivity into the red spectral region. Here, we report the first holographic photopolymerizable glass with sensitivity to red light, achieved through the incorporation of methylene blue (MB) as a photosensitizer and N-phenylglycine (NPG) as a co-initiator, with an optimal MB/NPG ratio of 1:150. This PHSG composition is capable of …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Purpose: To determine whether ocular dominance is associated with systematic interocular asymmetry in spherical equivalent refraction (SER) and axial length (AL) across childhood and early adulthood, and assess whether such asymmetry exceeds laterality effects. Methods: Data were analysed from three population-based cohorts: 728 children (6–7-year-olds) and 898 adolescents (12–13-year-olds) from Ireland and 303 young adults (25–30-year-olds) from Western Australia. Ocular dominance was assessed using sighting tests. SER was measured by cycloplegic autorefraction and AL by optical biometry. Interocular differences were evaluated using paired comparisons, concordance correlation coefficients (CCC), Deming regression, Bland–Altman analyses and mediation modelling. Analyses were stratified by refractive …

Antibiotic contamination is a growing global crisis due to widespread use and unregulated disposal, contributing to the proliferation of antibiotic-resistant microbes and ecological risks. This review critically evaluates antibiotic contamination and its impact on the environment and human health. Biochar and modified biochar modulate antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) dynamics and the destruction of ARG transfer. Optimization of biochar properties includes surface chemistry, structure, synthesis process, and surface engineering to enhance antibiotic adsorption and degradation. Despite significant advances in teleoperated systems, optimal human performance remains a challenging task due to one key aspect, i.e. reduced situational awareness. Active telepresence is one of the major contributing factors affecting operator’s situational awareness. Providing the user with multiple perspectives of the remote environment can be very beneficial, although it may also introduce challenges in maintaining effective control. Prior work has largely examined discrete manipulation tasks using single-modality assessments, whereas this study applies a multimodal neuroergonomic approach to a continuous precision-cutting task, providing first insights into control–view alignment and multi-camera perception effects. In this work, we focus on two …

Valorisation Of Barley Straw For Sustainable Nanocellulose Production Via Subcritical Alkaline Hydrolysis And Hdes-Assisted Processing, Dileswar Pradhan, Swarna Jaiswal, Brijesh K. Tiwari, Amit K. Jaiswal
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
This study investigates a sustainable and efficient approach to valorising barley straw by producing nanocellulose via an integrated subcritical alkaline hydrolysis and HDES-assisted processing pathway. Subcritical alkaline pretreatment under best processing conditions (150 bar, 200 °C, 125 min) enabled effective biomass fractionation, achieving average hemicellulose and lignin solubilisation of 57.72% and 82.69%, respectively. Subsequent purification of the pretreated solid fraction yielded cellulose fibres with an average cellulose yield of 41.97% and a purity of 87.87%. Nanocellulose was then obtained using a sequential HDES treatment followed by high-intensity ultrasound (HIUS), producing a sample (NC-BTW-3) in which 66% of particles exhibited diameters …

Conventional wastewater treatment performs reliably against routine contaminants but remains inconsistent for complex industrial effluents and for emerging pollutants such as pharmaceutical residues, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and micro/nano plastics. Engineered nanomaterials and artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) have each been reviewed extensively, but predominantly in isolation. The present review is distinguished from existing reviews in three specific respects. First, the nanomaterial-AI interface is treated as the unit of analysis rather than the two fields being surveyed in parallel: AI-guided material selection, dosing and pH control, membrane fouling prediction, nano sensor-assisted monitoring and regeneration scheduling are examined together. Second, evidence …

Thermophilic Microorganisms For Bioremediation Of Industrial Pollutants Including Hydrocarbons And Heavy Metals, Isha Dharsandia, Narendra Kumar, Ananya Tiwari, Amit K. Jaiswal
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Industrialization and urbanization have led to the constant discharge of hazardous pollutants such as effluents, hydrocarbons, and heavy metals, which pose a grave threat to ecological balance and human beings' well-being. Traditional physiochemical techniques for the treatment of environmental pollutants are energy-intensive, expensive, and inefficient in extreme environments. Hence, there is a need to explore alternative strategies to address the above problems. Thermophiles are microorganisms that grow in high temperatures, and they have recently been regarded as viable sources for bioremediation due to their metabolic resilience, enzyme stability, and resistance to industrial conditions. The current paper presents an in-depth literature …

Kombucha fermentation is a complex process influenced by many different process parameters and the dynamics of the microorganisms present. Since no universally established standards exist for large-scale production of kombucha, manufacturers still need to acquire the knowledge to establish controllable and reproducible processes. The aim of this study was to investigate the extent to which the kombucha fermentation process can be influenced by varying the oxygenation regime and the initial pH value. For this purpose, co-culture fermentations with the yeast Zygosaccharomyces bailii and the acetic acid bacterium Komagataeibacter hansenii were carried out under defined conditions, varying the type and intensity …

The growing use of nanomaterials in clean energy and remediation has led to unintended consequences, including long-term persistence, secondary contamination, and accumulation in the natural environment. Traditional materials design has focused on stability and durability, but those qualities could be liabilities if materials outlive their intended purpose. This study suggests using transient nanomaterials as a design paradigm, in which materials are engineered to perform optimally for a specific period of time and then undergo controlled transformation, deactivation, or disappearance. The review focuses on the conceptualization of transient nanomaterials and how they may be distinguished from degradable, recyclable, and stimuli-responsive materials. …

Orthopedic implant-associated infections (IAIs), predominantly caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, represent a major clinical challenge due to antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation, which together contribute to their chronic nature. This research presents a biogenic biofilm-resistant chitosan encapsulated Cu/ZnO nanocoating (CS-Cu/ZnO NC) synthesized using Euphorbia thymofolia metabolites and applied on orthopedic implant surface (Tubular bone locked stainless steel plates). The synthesized CS-Cu/ZnO NCs were characterized physicochemically (UV–Vis, FTIR, XRD, SEM) and biologically (antibacterial, antibiofilm, antivirulence, hemolysis and cytotoxicity). Microstructural analysis using UV–Visible Spectroscopy (UV–Vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) confirmed the successful synthesis, crystallinity …

Finger millet (Eleusine coracana), a climate-resilient cereal, offers a sustainable substrate for fermented foods. This study investigates the use of finger millet extract (FME) powder as a value-addition strategy in batter fermentation. Finger millet–black gram and FME powder with black gram blends were naturally fermented separately for 12 hours at a ratio of 3 : 1. In order to comprehend the impact of FME incorporation on fermentation performance and product quality, the study compared the physicochemical, biochemical, microbiological, and rheological characteristics of fermented finger millet (FM) batter with those of FME batter. FME incorporation hastened fermentation, reflected by steeper drops …

Harmonic distortion, reactive power imbalance, and voltage instability represent major challenges regarding the power quality of grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. Various recently developed flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices such as the unified power flow controller (UPFC) and distributed power flow controller (DPFC), however, have made them possible solutions but still do not provide a quantitative comparison in similar dynamic conditions. In this paper, comparative performance analysis of UPFC and DPFC in 3 MW grid connected solar PV system using Matlab Simulink is presented. The two controllers are affected by same disturbances, namely irradiance step change at t = …

Concerns about media authenticity, privacy, and information security arising from rapid advances in deepfake technology have made it increasingly important to detect manipulated facial content reliably. The primary goal of our work was to develop a deepfake detection model with high generalization across multiple datasets. To achieve this, we developed a hybrid detection approach that combines spatial visual texture analysis and frequency-domain analysis to detect manipulated facial images. Our approach includes convolutional spatial feature extraction from facial images and frequency—domain representations of the same images obtained by applying the fast Fourier transform. To help alleviate concerns about overreliance on frequency—domain …
