Transportation Needs And Commuting Stress Among Hospitality Employees: A Perspective From The Las Vegas Strip Corridor, Mehmet Erdem, Shashi Nambisan, Jehun Moon, Billy Bai, Juliana Byzyka, William Werner, Bethany Khan

ICHRIE Research Reports

This study examines the determinants of commute-related stress by integrating behavioral and situational perspectives within Las Vegas contexts. Grounded in the spillover theory, this study conceptualizes commuting stress as a cross-domain process in which strain generated during commuting extends into broader psychological outcomes. Employing an ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model, this study identifies the key components associated with commuting stress using survey data from 1,224 union workers in the Strip Corridor in Las Vegas. Findings reveal that experiential and situational factors play a dominant role in shaping stress perceptions. Specifically, traffic disruptions and behavioral adaptations (e.g., leaving earlier) emerge …

Perception Matters: A Case Study Exploring How Belief Systems Affect Family-School Partnerships And Family Literacy Initiatives In A Title I School, Kwtay Calvin Jan 2026

Perception Matters: A Case Study Exploring How Belief Systems Affect Family-School Partnerships And Family Literacy Initiatives In A Title I School, Kwtay Calvin

Dissertations

Family-school partnerships have been shown to have positive effects on students’ overall performance in school. However, in many instances schools have not used partnerships effectively to support literacy learning, particularly for Black families. Teacher bias, negative perceptions, and lack of cultural responsiveness hinder teachers’ effort to build meaningful relationships with Black families to best support family literacy. This qualitative study aimed to examine family-school partnerships through the experiences of school principals, teachers, and Black families to gain insight into the factors that impact collaborative relationships and family literacy support. This study is framed in critical race theory, the theory of …

Bees Carry More Exposed Pollen Than Flies And On Body Regions Well Placed For Floral Contact, Robert Warren Jan 2026

Bees Carry More Exposed Pollen Than Flies And On Body Regions Well Placed For Floral Contact, Robert Warren

Biology Faculty Datasets

Pollination studies generally emphasize bees, although flies are abundant flower visitors and may remain active under conditions in which bees do not forage. Pollination success depends not only on how much pollen is carried but also if the pollen is carried on body surfaces likely to contact flower stigmas. We compared exposed pollen load and its body placement on 527 bee (Hymenoptera) and fly (Diptera) specimens collected in a commercial apple orchard. Pollen was quantified by direct microscope counts for 376 specimens and hemocytometer wash counts for an additional 151 specimens. Pollen concentrated within scopae and corbiculae, which is less …

Effects Of Scapular-Focused Interventions On Shoulder Range Of Motion And Strength Outcomes Associated With Throwing Performance: A Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis, Elijah S. Garcia Jan 2026

Effects Of Scapular-Focused Interventions On Shoulder Range Of Motion And Strength Outcomes Associated With Throwing Performance: A Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis, Elijah S. Garcia

Research Papers

Background

The scapula plays a crucial role in overhead throwing mechanics acting as the proximal base for glenohumeral motion and creating optimal force transfer throughout the kinetic chain. Impaired scapular control can be linked to altered shoulder mechanics, lack of mobility, and increased injury risk in athletes whose sport require overhead movements (overhead athletes) (Cools et al., 2015; Kibler et al., 2021). Scapular stabilization programs are often used in rehabilitation and performance settings, despite the fact that the magnitude of their effectiveness on shoulder range of motion and strength outcomes in throwing populations remains unclear. The purpose of this review …

Reclaiming Sophia In The Age Of Ai: Theological And Ethical Reflections On Consecrated Technology And Human Dignity, Matthew H. Sauber Jan 2026

Reclaiming Sophia In The Age Of Ai: Theological And Ethical Reflections On Consecrated Technology And Human Dignity, Matthew H. Sauber

Faculty Scholarship 2026

The cultural emergence of artificial intelligence systems named after figures of divine wisdom—most notably the Hanson Robotics humanoid Sophia, granted Saudi citizenship in 2017—reveals a gap between the language of the wisdom traditions and that of contemporary technology. This paper treats that gap as the occasion for theological and ethical reflection on AI. Drawing on the Sophia tradition across its Hebrew, Hellenistic-Patristic, Gnostic, Russian Sophiological, perennialist, and Sufi articulations—especially Sergei Bulgakov’s account of Sophia as mediation between divine wisdom and created order—it develops a framework termed Consecrated Technology. The argument unfolds in three moves: (1) a structural critique showing how …

Digital Colonialism In Ai-Enhanced Sustainability Education: A Decolonial Systematic Review, Matthew Sauber Jan 2026

Digital Colonialism In Ai-Enhanced Sustainability Education: A Decolonial Systematic Review, Matthew Sauber

Faculty Scholarship 2026

As artificial intelligence reshapes higher education globally, its integration into sustainability programs raises urgent questions about equity, epistemological justice, and the reproduction of colonial power structures through technological systems. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is premised on inclusive, justice-oriented pedagogy, yet the AI tools increasingly deployed in these programs originate predominantly from the Global North and embed Western epistemological assumptions. This study investigates how AI integration in higher education sustainability programs operates as a form of digital colonialism, creating systematic inequities that contradict ESD’s foundational commitments. We conducted a decolonial systematic review synthesizing 61 empirical studies identified through structured searches …

Super-Efficient Breach In Bankruptcy: Recalibrating Remedies For Contract Rejection Damages, Ishaq Kundawala Jan 2026

Super-Efficient Breach In Bankruptcy: Recalibrating Remedies For Contract Rejection Damages, Ishaq Kundawala

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

Contract law rests on a simple but powerful premise: when a party breaches, the law protects the injured party’s expectation interest, placing them, as nearly as possible, in the position they would have occupied had the contract been performed. This principle underlies the theory of efficient breach, which tolerates economically rational breaches so long as the non-breaching party is fully compensated. But in bankruptcy, this foundation often collapses. Under section 365 of the Bankruptcy Code, a debtor may reject an executory contract, with the law treating that rejection as a prepetition breach and relegating the counterparty’s claim to general unsecured …

Business Insights Laboratory for Development (BUILD)

This study examined Filipino corporate trainers’ views on the effectiveness of gamification in onsite and online training. Using Clark and Braun’s thematic analysis, eight trainers shared their insights into its impact on engagement, motivation, and reinforcement. Results showed gamification can boost participation and structure learning, but its success depends on deliberate integration of game elements and digital tools. This varied slightly between modalities, especially when involving inductive and deductive assessments. Trainers emphasized the importance of incorporating interactive activities, providing feedback, enhancing competition, and offering rewards to strengthen engagement. The study also identified the complementary benefits of online and onsite training …
