Designing Ai Systems To Support A Productive-Failure-Based Learning: Insights From Adult Learners On Ai Applications And Ai System Design Principles, Jinhee Kim, Xi Lin, Seongryeong Yu, Rita Detrick
STEMPS Faculty Publications
Emerging capabilities of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) offer significant potential to support productive failure (PF)-based learning, which engages adult learners (ALs) in exploring problems before instruction and learning from their initial attempts. However, the effective use of AI to support multifaceted areas of PF-based learning, including problem generation, exploration, consolidation, and knowledge assembly, is limited. Furthermore, AI design principles to support PF-based learning remain under-researched. This study, therefore, aims to investigate ALs’ perceptions of AI applications in enhancing PF-based learning and to explore the essential design principles of AI systems for PF-based learning. To achieve these aims, the study conducted …
Madman's Drum, Lynd Ward
Madman's Drum, Lynd Ward
Zea E-Books Collection
Lynd Ward (1905–1985) was born in Chicago and studied at Columbia Teachers College in New York City and at the National Academy of Graphic Arts and Bookmaking in Leipzig, Germany. He began working as a book illustrator in 1927, and in 1929 published this first “wordless novel,” Gods’ Man. He eventually published five more such works, as well as illustrations for more than 100 other books, plus drawings, lithographs, watercolors, and children’s stories.
Madman’s Drum is his second wordless novel. It tells a dark story about a slaver who murders an African and steals his drum, which seems to …
Breaking The Cycle: Substance Use Disorders, Recidivism, And The Role Of Reentry Programs, Sophia R. Veloz
Breaking The Cycle: Substance Use Disorders, Recidivism, And The Role Of Reentry Programs, Sophia R. Veloz
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This Honors Research Paper examines the relationship between substance use treatment and recidivism among justice-involved individuals, gathering from my academic background as a dual major in psychology and national security and my internship at Oriana House in Akron, Ohio. Oriana House is a private nonprofit organization that provides inpatient and outpatient services for adults with substance use disorders, including detoxification, motivational interviewing (MI), Substance Use Disorder (SUD) counseling, telehealth, and 12-step facilitation. Their mission emphasizes reducing recidivism by addressing substance use and supporting long-term recovery. The main research question in this study is whether taking part in structured, community-based treatment …
Ethanol And Iron Absorption Interactions Within Crayfish Invertebrate Models, James Rollman, Andrew Wissmar
Ethanol And Iron Absorption Interactions Within Crayfish Invertebrate Models, James Rollman, Andrew Wissmar
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Analysis of the effects of alcohol consumption (ethyl-alcohol) on iron absorption within crayfish model. The use of tube-feeding provides a novel, more precise output, and less invasive procedure compared to the traditional approach of dissolving the target substance in tank water and measuring hemolymph changes. The project aims to determine the extent to which alcohol influences iron absorption. Ultimately, the choice of iron reflect the future potential to aid in research with genetic hemochromatosis and or Iron overload.

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This project is a literature review discussing the overall impact that exercising, Human Resource Management incentives, and wellness programs have on job performance levels and employee motivation. The literature to be reviewed connects the importance and effects of exercise to the benefits it can supply to organizations looking to increase employee performance as well as rewards that motivate individuals. Within the field of Human Resource Management and Industrial and Organizational Psychology, there is plentiful research on what plays pivotal roles in performance and theories on motivational aspects of work. Diving further into years of already completed research on these topics, …
Leaders, Confidence, Policies And Popularity: The Relation Between Europe’S Confidence In The Sitting U.S. President And Its Favorability Towards The United States, Greg Mitchhart
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The president of the United States is perhaps the figure most representative of the U.S. and its interests on the global stage. While the country as a whole is not entirely defined by this single person, it’s important to understand how international opinions surrounding the president potentially correlate with international opinions of the United States itself due to the myriad of implications that stem from these latter views (e.g. soft power and its relation to goodwill, access to international markets, military latitude, etc.). For this study, we will examine the correlation between 5 European nations’ people's confidence in the current …
The Connection Between Medicaid And Obesity In Northeast Ohio, Emmie Kelley, Sophie Kheder
The Connection Between Medicaid And Obesity In Northeast Ohio, Emmie Kelley, Sophie Kheder
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Obesity is a major public health concern in the United States that is projected to increase exponentially over the next few years. Obesity is commonly associated with a lower socioeconomic status. Lower-income individuals tend to be supported by Medicaid, a federal insurance program for low-income Americans. Prior studies have shown a positive correlation between income status and obesity prevalence. Our goal was to find if there was a correlation between Medicaid patients and obesity in Northeast Ohio, to provide physicians with a set of characteristics to better combat obesity, since preventative and treatment guidelines are tailored to national trends. We …

Modeling Housing Prices: Which Features Matter Most?, Alex Ruvolo
Modeling Housing Prices: Which Features Matter Most?, Alex Ruvolo
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This paper attempts to find the biggest factors and traits that influence the cost of housing. This will include the lot size, type of street, utilities, neighborhood, year built, heating, electrical, yard size, number of different rooms, age, condition, and others. I will attempt to answer the question of whether the prices of houses have changed within the last 5 to 10 years, and obviously this is an easy question to answer. However, the bigger question beyond this is are the main factors affecting housing prices all important in explaining this relationship? Is one factor more important than the rest …

This data will then be put into a research manuscript to be presented via posterboard …
Ohio Redistricting And The Meaning Of Fairness, Elena G. Klingler
Ohio Redistricting And The Meaning Of Fairness, Elena G. Klingler
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The failure of Ohio’s Issue 1, a redistricting reform amendment to the state constitution proposed in 2024, has been a topic of significant discussion. Though the controversial change to the language of the amendment made by the Ohio Ballot Board has often been identified as the consequential factor, the full implications of this change – why it was made, what it says about the meaning of ‘gerrymandering’ and ‘fairness,’ and why different groups define those words differently – have not been fully explored. This project will qualitatively assess whether the failure of Issue 1 was affected by definitional disagreements based …
From Touchbacks To Touchdowns: Analyzing The Impact Of The Nfl's New Kickoff Rule Changes, Joshua A. Klatt
From Touchbacks To Touchdowns: Analyzing The Impact Of The Nfl's New Kickoff Rule Changes, Joshua A. Klatt
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
My proposal analyzes the impact of the NFL's new dynamic kickoff rule changes that were implemented in the Fall of 2024. I use a two-way fixed effects differences-in-differences model using FBS collegiate Division 1 football teams as the control group, and NFL teams as the treatment group. Three of the most important outcome variables I analyze are touchdowns per kickoff return, average yards per kickoff return, and the number of kickoff returns per game.
Examining The Effects Of Black Parenting Styles Of Self-Esteems, Alexander J. Ruffin-Stcyr, Lorris Robinson
Examining The Effects Of Black Parenting Styles Of Self-Esteems, Alexander J. Ruffin-Stcyr, Lorris Robinson
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This study examined the relationships between parenting styles, Afrocentric values, and psychological flourishing among African American families. Grounded in cultural and developmental perspectives, the study focused on how social and cultural contexts shape well-being outcomes. Parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive) and Afrocentric values were explored as key predictors of flourishing.
Using a quantitative survey design, data was collected from 86 African American adults who completed standardized measures assessing parenting style, cultural values, and flourishing. Correlational analyses revealed that permissive parenting was significantly and negatively associated with flourishing, indicating that higher levels of permissive parenting were linked to lower well-being. …
Moving Positively: A Review Of Positive Psychology Interventions In Counseling, Spencer M. Fleming, Ingrid Weigold Ph. D
Moving Positively: A Review Of Positive Psychology Interventions In Counseling, Spencer M. Fleming, Ingrid Weigold Ph. D
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Positive psychology is a relatively new and developing subfield of psychology which examines the machinations and roles of various character strengths and traits such as growth, well-being, meaning, life satisfaction, character strengths, and more. Positive psychology holds various implications for counseling, therapy, individual growth, and self-determination. However, current literature on positive psychology interventions (PPIs) are scattered, nuanced, and lack overall consensus. Thus, encompassing research is necessary to identify common trends, areas for improvement, and a clear direction moving forward. The present review analyzes positive psychology interventions (PPIs) within psychology and counseling. This review examined forty-eight articles, including fifteen meta-analyses, on …

The research will analyze existing literature to understand how media portrayals of women athletes differ from those of men and how these differences influence visibility and perception of female athletes. Sources will be organized and compared to reveal recurring trends and highlight the factors that contribute to the biased representation. This research will take place during Fall 2025 and conclude in Spring 2026 with a final written report and presentation at the …
Private Prosecution And The State, Anna Arons
Private Prosecution And The State, Anna Arons
Faculty Publications
The modern family regulation system is paradigmatically public. In the common account, the state plays a monopolistic role. It decides which families to investigate and which to prosecute, which families to surveil and which to separate, and which services and benefits to provision for families entangled in the system. Yet, this public family regulation paradigm obscures the role of private prosecution. Nearly half of states permit private individuals to initiate dependency prosecutions. In these cases, private prosecutors allege that parents have neglected or abused their children and seek state intervention on the fundamental right to family integrity.

The Right To Seek Joy, Tyler Rose Clemons
The Right To Seek Joy, Tyler Rose Clemons
Faculty Publications
Within the past three years, roughly half of American states have restricted access to gender-affirming medical treatment for children. In this article, I argue that these bans violate transgender children’s right to liberty guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment’s Due Process Clause. I do so by excavating the Framers’ understanding of liberty as the right to seek joy. Rooted in the philosophies of John Locke and Epicurus, the Framers understood liberty as the right to make important life decisions according to one’s subjective preferences without undue interference from the government. Based on this understanding, I develop a new framework for substantive …
Abuse Of Contract: A Proposal For A New Cause Of Action, Miriam A. Cherry
Abuse Of Contract: A Proposal For A New Cause Of Action, Miriam A. Cherry
Faculty Publications
With the growth of online commerce and the platform economy, many companies are including provisions in their online terms and conditions that extend far beyond what reasonable consumers would expect. Some terms and conditions purport to bind customers to separate contracts in future transactions that have little to do with the first contract. Other boilerplate purports to cover family members of the customer who created an account. Some retailers have argued that people shopping in their brick-and-mortar stores are subject to terms and conditions because those shoppers had at some point previously created an online account. For example, Disney argued …
Systemic Racism As Negligence, Taifha Natalee Alexander
Systemic Racism As Negligence, Taifha Natalee Alexander
Faculty Publications
(Excerpt)
If negligence doctrine can hold polluters liable for foreseeable toxic harm, should it not also hold schools liable for the racial toxins their policies foreseeably cause? Negligence serves as a critical doctrinal vehicle for redressing harm resulting from failures to exercise care. Embedded in common law traditions, negligence doctrine has evolved significantly through application to new contexts where systemic, rather than individualized, failures produce harm. Some courts have applied negligence doctrine to an expanding range of institutional responsibilities, from medical malpractice to corporate liability. Yet, despite the doctrine’s flexibility, courts have not applied the framework to address one of …

Presidential Slaves: The Story Of Black People In The Lives Of Antebellum U.S. Presidents, Nika Davis
Presidential Slaves: The Story Of Black People In The Lives Of Antebellum U.S. Presidents, Nika Davis
History Dissertations
The historical narrative about American slavery included many topics such as the African slave trade, the Middle Passage, slave culture, rebellions, religion, and abolition. This study revealed more information to be examined in the record of American slavery relating to the presidents of the United States and their enslaved laborers. This oversight proved prevalent during the years leading to the American Civil War from 1820-1860. Therefore, this dissertation focused upon the enslaved and free Black people who intersected with the presidents and their friends, political acquaintances, and family. By studying their lives, this dissertation revealed that the slaves associated with …
The Essence Of The Heart: Layered Human Experience In Eva Jessye’S My Spirituals, Jessica Brunet
The Essence Of The Heart: Layered Human Experience In Eva Jessye’S My Spirituals, Jessica Brunet
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Much of the spiritual repertory has been transcribed as documentation of purely melodic and lyrical content, and many songs have been arranged by some of the greatest figures in twentieth- and twenty-first century music history, including Harry T. Burleigh, Hall Johnson, Margaret Bonds, and Jacqueline B. Hairston. On this roster of luminaries is Dr. Eva Jessye (1895-1992).
If Eva Jessye is remembered at all, it is typically in the context of her role as choral director for the original production of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess (1935). Among a litany of other accomplishments, however, Dr. Jessye also published a collection of …
Finding, Founding, And Forging: Queer Formulations Of Family In Nineteenth-Century British Novels, Brian Hicks
Finding, Founding, And Forging: Queer Formulations Of Family In Nineteenth-Century British Novels, Brian Hicks
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines how nineteenth-century British novels imagine and negotiate queer formulations of family at moments when biological kinship, marriage, and inheritance were increasingly formalized as social and legal imperatives. Reading canonical texts by Austen, Shelley, Wilde, Brontë, and Hardy, alongside the proto-modern and modernist work of Joseph Conrad and Virginia Woolf, I argue that these novels resist consanguinity as the sole basis of family and instead theorize queer kinship as something found, founded, or forged through affinity, care, and shared orientation rather than blood or reproduction. Drawing on queer theory, feminist criticism, phenomenology, and Foucauldian accounts of power and …
At The Intersection Of Property And Disaster Recovery, Jeanne Ortiz-Ortiz
At The Intersection Of Property And Disaster Recovery, Jeanne Ortiz-Ortiz
Faculty Publications
(Excerpt)
When disaster strikes, communities rally to meet urgent, short-term needs—food, shelter, and medical care that keep people alive and safe in the immediate aftermath. For days, we see images of flooded streets, emergency shelters, and calls to support fundraising campaigns in the media cycle. Long-term recovery after a disaster often depends on something less visible: the ability of people, especially those experiencing economic insecurity, to rebuild or return to stable, functional homes.
The outcome of this largely depends on whether families can navigate and access assistance programs like those offered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Can you …
Perceptions Of Prek-Eighth Grade School And District Administrators On The English Language Learner Reclassification Criteria, Impacting Long-Term English Learners, Elma Adelina Rodriguez
Perceptions Of Prek-Eighth Grade School And District Administrators On The English Language Learner Reclassification Criteria, Impacting Long-Term English Learners, Elma Adelina Rodriguez
Doctor of Education (EdD)
The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions of school and district administrators regarding English Language Learner (ELL) criteria that affect the academic trajectories of Long-Term English Learners (LTELs). ELL criteria differ across states and are used to demonstrate not only English language proficiency but also ELL students' academic performance. While English-only students are not required to demonstrate their academic use of English, ELL students are required to demonstrate English-language academic reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills to be reclassified as English proficient. If ELL students remain classified as ELL for multiple years, they are labeled as LTEL. …
