Temporal Evolution Of Brain Inflammation In The Bilateral Common Carotid Artery Stenosis Model Of Chronic Cerebral Hypoperfusion, Makayla F. Cox, Jill M. Roberts, Ryan K. Shahidehpour, David L. Dornbos Iii, Adam D. Bachstetter Jan 2026

Temporal Evolution Of Brain Inflammation In The Bilateral Common Carotid Artery Stenosis Model Of Chronic Cerebral Hypoperfusion, Makayla F. Cox, Jill M. Roberts, Ryan K. Shahidehpour, David L. Dornbos Iii, Adam D. Bachstetter

Neuroscience Faculty Publications

Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion is a major contributor to vascular cognitive impairment and dementia, primarily through its disruption of white matter integrity and promotion of neuroinflammatory cascades. The bilateral common carotid artery stenosis (BCAS) model has emerged as the predominant experimental approach for studying the effects of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion, particularly in aging-relevant contexts. This review synthesizes current knowledge of inflammatory responses in the BCAS model, with an emphasis on their temporal progression and functional consequences. We begin by outlining the clinical burden of hypoperfusion, the rationale for BCAS, and the hemodynamic phases it produces. We then examine early neurovascular unit …

Artificial light at night (light pollution) is widespread but understudied in the context of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Sleep and circadian disruption have been linked to amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation and neuroinflammation, but whether dim light at night (dLAN) modifies these processes remains unclear. We tested whether chronic dLAN exposure (8 lux during the dark phase, 8 weeks) alters circadian rhythms, amyloid pathology, and neuroinflammation in 12–13 month-old humanized APP knock-in (KI) mice. hAPPSAA KI mice, which develop plaques, were compared with hAPPWT KI controls carrying only a humanized APP sequence. dLAN reduced circadian rhythm amplitude and stability while increasing …

A Descriptive Study Of Culturally Responsive Practices In Positive Behavioral Interventions And Supports (Pbis) In West Virginia Elementary Schools, Janna Rae Coleman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This descriptive mixed-methods study examined elementary teachers’ implementation and perceived effectiveness of culturally responsive practices within existing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) systems in a West Virginia school district. Guided by Leverson et al.’s (2021) Culturally Responsive PBIS (CRPBIS) framework, the study explored five components of culturally responsive practice: identity, voice, supportive environment, situational appropriateness, and data for equity. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected from 86 elementary teachers using the researcher-developed Culturally Responsive Practices in Existing PBIS Survey. Findings indicated that teachers reported frequent implementation and perceived effectiveness across all five components, with the supportive environment receiving …

Who We Are Together: Identity Negotiation In Different-Orientation Relationships, Justin Tackett Jan 2026

Who We Are Together: Identity Negotiation In Different-Orientation Relationships, Justin Tackett

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

viii Abstract This qualitative study explored how partners in different-orientation (dif-orientation) relationships experienced and navigated identity across the five frames of the Communication Theory of Identity (CTI): personal, enacted, relational, communal, and material. Dif-orientation relationships, romantic partnerships where individuals identify with different sexual orientations, represent a form of intercultural communication involving partners from distinct sexual orientation communities who must negotiate different cultural frameworks regarding sexuality, relationships, and identity expression. Despite growing recognition of diverse relationship configurations, little research currently examines how partners in these relationships manage identity gaps, or misalignments between different frames of identity, and what communication strategies they …

Parent Involvement In Urban Schools: Principal Leadership And Instructional Practices, Tiffany M. Fincher Jan 2026

Parent Involvement In Urban Schools: Principal Leadership And Instructional Practices, Tiffany M. Fincher

All Capstone Projects

National research shows that one-third of parents participate in their child's school. However, in urban and low-income schools that serve African American students, parent participation rates are even lower. The African American family's low participation in the educational process has long been an issue in education. For this reason, Epstein's Theory of Overlapping Spheres is used to explore the perceptions of school leadership regarding parental involvement in urban schools. A qualitative research methodology was used, and data were collected through structured interviews with school principals and teachers. The population for this study consisted of three principals and five teachers from …

The Social Role And Significance Of Religion For Ukraine Today – Historical Dynamics And Current Contributions, Olena Svysiuk

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The paper delivers an analysis of Ukrainians’ religious worldview, tracing its development and transformation under historical, social and political influences. The contribution of the main Christian denominations − Orthodoxy, Greek-Catholicism and Protestantism − to national identity-building, the shaping of moral values, social cohesion and civic engagement is outlined. The work highlights how religion is deeply entwined with Ukrainian traditions, spirituality, and political life, serving as both a moral compass and a catalyst for social change. It also points to the churches’ social ministry − humanitarian, educational and psychological support − during the full-scale war. The involvement of religious institutions as …

From The History Of The Arrival Of The True Cross In Georgia, Giorgi Sosiashvili, Aleksandre Mgebrishvili Prof. Dr.

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

This article explores the complex historical and theological narratives surrounding the arrival of the True Cross—the Life-Giving Wood—in Georgia, as preserved in medieval Georgian chronicles and ecclesiastical writings. Drawing upon primary sources such as the Conversion of Kartli, the chronicles of Leonti Mroveli, Nikoloz Gulaberidze, and Arsen Ikaltoeli, as well as later accounts by Prince Teimuraz, Niko Dadiani, and Platon Ioseliani, the study reconstructs the multi-layered tradition of how fragments of the Holy Cross were brought from Byzantium to Kartli during the reign of King Mirian. According to these sources, Emperor Constantine the Great and Queen Helena dispatched to Georgia …

Preservation Of Architectural-Religious Heritage In Modern Ukraine, Olga Gold, Maksym Vasalatiy, Olga Dobrodum

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

This article examines answers to a number of pressing questions regarding the preservation of architectural heritage in the modern world: what philosophical views underlie the preservation of world heritage; and what is unique about the protection of religious architectural heritage. The architectural philosophy of religious buildings represents a complex of original concepts, both material and spiritual. The hypothesis consists of constructing an algorithm and mechanism for protecting cultural heritage from the perspective of the philosophy of architecture in post-war Ukraine. The preservation of historical and cultural heritage sites is one of the most complex areas of activity in the fields …

Religious And Cultural Dimension Of The "Ringing Cedars Of Russia" Movement In The Context Of Hybrid Warfare, Oleksandr Lukyanenko, Vitaly Dmytrenko, Vita Dmytrenko

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The article is devoted to a comprehensive religious analysis of the neo-religious movement “The Ringing Cedars of Russia,” based on the works of Vladimir Megre and the image of the prophetess Anastasia. The study covers the ideological and doctrinal foundations of the movement, its socio-cultural practices, the functioning of tribal settlements, as well as mechanisms of influence on individual and collective consciousness. Particular attention is paid to the concepts of “Vedrussia”, the sacralization of “Russian space” and the mythologization of Russia’s calling to revive the “primitive civilization of harmony.” The analysis shows that the movement, while declaring ecological and humanistic …

Brain-Derived Extracellular Vesicles Potentially Mediate Crosstalk With Peripheral Organs In Neurodegenerative Diseases, Ramzi H. Hamdalla, Vibha B. Bhaskar, Changhai Tian Jan 2026

Brain-Derived Extracellular Vesicles Potentially Mediate Crosstalk With Peripheral Organs In Neurodegenerative Diseases, Ramzi H. Hamdalla, Vibha B. Bhaskar, Changhai Tian

Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications

Brain-Derived Extracellular vesicles (BDEVs) are emerging mediators of intra- and interorgan communication in neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) such as Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and Parkinson’s Disease (PD). A growing body of evidence suggests that BDEVs play an important role in modulating intercellular communication within the central nervous system in the pathogenesis of many NDs. By transporting non-coding RNAs (e.g., miRNAs) and important pathological proteins, BDEVs also influence peripheral organs and contribute to the progression of disease in the central nervous system (CNS). This review extends the understanding of NDs beyond solely brain dysfunction and gives a novel framework for the progression of …

Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Center Faculty Publications

Cerebral hypometabolism occurs in both traumatic brain injury (TBI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), but whether these conditions act through distinct or overlapping mechanisms is unclear. TBI disrupts cerebral metabolism via blood–brain barrier damage, altered glucose transporter expression, calcium buffering abnormalities, and oxidative damage to metabolic enzymes. AD-related hypometabolism is linked to amyloid-β (Aβ) effects on mitochondria, including impaired respiration, oxidative stress, and altered mitophagy, fusion, and fission. We tested whether TBI-induced mitochondrial dysfunction exacerbates Aβ-mediated impairment using a closed-head injury (CHI) model in APP/PS1 knock-in (KI) mice. Injuries were delivered at 4–5 months of age, before plaque formation and mitochondrial …
