Pláticas Of Latinas In Educational Leadership: Stories Of Identity, Resilience, And Transformation, Vanessa Davalos Jan 2026

Pláticas Of Latinas In Educational Leadership: Stories Of Identity, Resilience, And Transformation, Vanessa Davalos

Educational Leadership Professional Doctorate Dissertations

Despite federal and state equity laws that prohibit discrimination based on sex and national origin, women remain significantly underrepresented in K–12 educational leadership, with Latina leaders experiencing even greater disparities. While the number of Hispanic students in public schools continues to grow, the representation of Latina leaders has not kept pace, creating a critical gap between those leading schools and the communities they serve.

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study is to provide insight into the lived experiences of Latina educational leaders in order to deepen understanding of how identity, role, and leadership intersect (Hernandez & Murakami, 2016). Centering …

Biostatistics Faculty Publications

Introduction: Efforts to reduce opioid overdose deaths in the United States have been stymied by the lack of timely and standardized population-level data for local, state, and national levels. The U.S. has a strong national need for linking opioid and other drug overdose surveillance data to service utilization data for overdose prevention and treatment to inform resource allocation and response planning.

Methods: We provide insight on the challenges of identifying, obtaining, and harmonizing administrative outcome data across four states using the collective experience from the HEALing Communities Study to test a community-engaged, data-driven, population-level intervention to reduce opioid overdose deaths. …

Pediatric Clinical Reasoning Labs’ Impact On Student Self-Efficacy In Pediatric Physical Therapy Education, Bethany Early Jan 2026

Pediatric Clinical Reasoning Labs’ Impact On Student Self-Efficacy In Pediatric Physical Therapy Education, Bethany Early

Dissertations

All graduates of entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs must be competent to work with patients across the lifespan and high levels of perceived self-efficacy (SE) may be a predictor of future success. Experiential learning is an effective teaching and learning strategy used within Pediatric PT education (PedPTE). This study examined the extent to which pediatric clinical reasoning labs impact student SE within PedPTE, and to what extent does previous experience or interest in pediatrics have on perceived SE.

The methodology was a sequential explanatory mixed methods research design. Quantitative data collection included 27 second year DPT students, utilizing …

From Voice To Noise: Accented Speech, Constructed Languages, And Subtitling Practices As Markers Of Difference, Alice Alonso Limongi Jan 2026

From Voice To Noise: Accented Speech, Constructed Languages, And Subtitling Practices As Markers Of Difference, Alice Alonso Limongi

Course Work

This monograph explores three main strategies of vocal exotification in Anglophone film: representations of accented speech, inclusion of constructed languages, and non-subtitling of snippets of other languages. Using Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding framework, I approach these practices as rhetorical devices that both construct and are constructed by the complexity of our social landscapes. Portrayals of accented speech, constructed languages, and subtitling practices form a gradient of abstraction, where the denotative meaning of words gradually loses importance to the sonic characteristics of the voice. Combining broader cultural scholarship from Edward Said, sound studies writings on power and language from Nina Sun Eidsheim …

Purpose: Pharmacoepidemiology is a key discipline for evidence-based decision-making, yet its educational programs have not been systematically assessed for alignment with international core competencies. Our objectives were to evaluate curricula alignment of pharmacoepidemiology training programs with ISPE-recommended core competency themes and identify key curriculum content development areas.

Methods: The ISPE Core Competencies Workgroup and ISPE leadership developed a curriculum and needs assessment survey, incorporating feedback from global members. The survey was electronically distributed to leaders of pharmacoepidemiology training programs (e.g., department chairs and program directors) using the ISPE contact database, followed by snowball sampling to enhance representation. Institutional respondent characteristics …

Family Functioning And Stress In Arab American Young Adults, Sahar Kaouk Jan 2026

Family Functioning And Stress In Arab American Young Adults, Sahar Kaouk

Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-

Family functioning plays a central role in the lives of Arab American young adults, yet little research has examined how family dynamics relate to stress in this population. Guided by Bowen’s (1978) Family Systems Theory, this study investigated the relationship between family functioning and perceived stress, as well as the roles of Differentiation of Self (DoS), Reflective Coping, and collectivistic orientation. Participants included 225 young adults ages 18 to 25 who self-identified as Arab American. Data were collected using self-report measures, and structural equation modeling was used to test the hypothesized model. Results indicated that family functioning was indirectly related …

Background: Annually, more than 3500 US infants die suddenly and unexpectedly. Many sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUID) are preventable with greater adherence to safe infant sleep guidelines. There are racial and economic disparities in guideline adherence and SUID rates. Education alone has proven ineffective at altering behavior for many parents, and social networks and social norms regarding infant care have been found to influence rates of unsafe sleep. Using the power of social networks to shape social norms by delivering education through moderated online social media groups provides a unique opportunity to influence these practices in large groups of parents. …

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

This chapter brings together some of the research directions suggested in earlier pages of the  Handbook. Attention is drawn to P/CVE issues, the uncertain relation of radicalized ideas and terrorist violence, the potential of polling and survey research, the importance of moral judgment in radicalization to political violence, and the value of comparing terrorists with different streams of activists working for the same cause.

An Intersectional Investigation Of Gendered Racial Microaggressions And Asian American Women’S Body Appreciation, Liujun Chen, Xiaoyin Liu, Thomas P. Le, Lydia H.R. Ahn Jan 2026

An Intersectional Investigation Of Gendered Racial Microaggressions And Asian American Women’S Body Appreciation, Liujun Chen, Xiaoyin Liu, Thomas P. Le, Lydia H.R. Ahn

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

While some research has explored the cultural correlates of negative body image among Asian American women, fewer studies have addressed what may contribute to body appreciation among Asian American women. We recruited a sample of 234 Asian American women via Prolific, who completed an online survey. Specifically, the present study examined (1) whether gendered racial microaggressions were associated with body appreciation among Asian American women, (2) whether resistance and empowerment against racism moderated this association, and (3) whether three subscales of internalized racism—self-negativity, weakness stereotypes, and appearance bias—mediated this association. A regression analysis showed a negative association between gendered racial …

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

Intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a significant global public health concern, drawing increasing attention due to its profound impact on victims. A systematic review by Lawrence et al. (2012) demonstrated that IPV victims of physical and psychological abuse experience higher rates of physical injuries, poorer health outcomes, poorer physical functioning, and increased psychological symptoms compared to non-victimized individuals. Building on this work, we conducted a systematic review of 159 quantitative studies published between 2012 and 2022.

Across the included studies, more than half had samples ranging between 100-500 (52.8%, n=84) in size, were cross-sectional (84.9%; n=135), and utilized …

Development Of Highly Reactive Sulfone Iminium Fluoride Reagents And Their Application In Fluorine Methodologies, James Vogel Jan 2026

Development Of Highly Reactive Sulfone Iminium Fluoride Reagents And Their Application In Fluorine Methodologies, James Vogel

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

Organofluorines are important molecules that have found great use in the pharmaceutical industry. Deoxyfluorination is an appealing methodology available to synthetic chemists for forming carbon-fluorine bonds. In the first part of this work, we report the synthesis of sulfone iminium fluorides (SIFs), a new and highly reactive sulfur (VI) fluoride reagent class. A small library of these compounds was synthesized in five simple, modular steps from cheap starting materials. The SIF reagents successfully convert alcohols and carboxylic acids into their corresponding fluorinated moieties in high yields at room temperature with unprecedented reaction speed, requiring just 60 seconds. Furthermore, the SIF …

Pavore Risum: Humor And Horror In Apuleius’ Metamorphoses, Mallory Fitzpatrick Jan 2026

Pavore Risum: Humor And Horror In Apuleius’ Metamorphoses, Mallory Fitzpatrick

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the relationship between humor and horror in Apuleius’ Metamorphoses. By analyzing episodes of supernatural horror over the course of the text, I establish a repeated pattern of confusion between magical and mundane storyworlds in each of these episodes, where the protagonist misunderstands the nature of the storyworld which they occupy. This confusion between storyworlds in the early episodes of the text creates horror for these protagonists, but humor for the audiences of their stories, internal and external alike. However, when Lucius, the text’s narrator, becomes a victim of witchcraft, experiencing this confusion between storyworlds himself, humor …

Beyond Perspective: A Spectacular History Of The Three-Dimensional Image Through The Stereoscope, The View-Master, And Marcel Duchamp, Margaret Hankel Jan 2026

Beyond Perspective: A Spectacular History Of The Three-Dimensional Image Through The Stereoscope, The View-Master, And Marcel Duchamp, Margaret Hankel

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the technology of the stereoscope and its threedimensional image called a stereograph. Invented in 1838 by the British physicist Charles Wheatstone, the stereoscope produces an optical illusion in which depth and volume appear to project both inward and outward from a stereograph’s two-dimensional surface. This spectacular, three-dimensional image enjoyed widespread popularity in the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries as the technology underwent multiple reinventions. By examining stereoscopy with an art historical lens, this dissertation considers the technology in relation to the tradition of perspective and illusionism in art. The stereograph’s emergence alongside photography marks an intensification of …

Weeping And Virtus In Early Imperial Roman Epic, Mary Somerville Jan 2026

Weeping And Virtus In Early Imperial Roman Epic, Mary Somerville

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

Are men always feminized when they weep? It is well-known that Greek epic heroes like Odysseus weep without losing their claim to masculinity; does the same rule hold true for Roman epic heroes? In this dissertation I examine how men weep in Roman epic poetry of the early Roman empire as an aspect of the performance of masculinity. Specifically, I explore the multiple valences of male tears and related emotional expressions across three core texts: Vergil’s Aeneid, Lucan’s Bellum Civile, and Statius’ Thebaid. I seek to understand judgments of and explanations for men’s tears within my sources, …

Examining Structural Stigma In American Policy Making: A Case Study Of California Senate Bill 403, Anjali Bushan

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

The South Asian American community is one of the fastest growing communities in the United States (Budiman & Ruiz, 2021). While research has explored various aspects of the South Asian American diaspora, limited research has focused on the caste system in the diaspora. This study examined caste on a macro level in American policy making. Using a qualitative case study design, it explored how the policy making process of California Senate Bill 403, a bill intended to prohibit caste discrimination, impacted structural stigma on caste and demonstrated interest convergence between caste supremacy and white supremacy in the United States. Findings …

Oral Health Science Faculty Publications

Objective: Brief behavioral interventions targeting pain (Physical Self-Regulation, PSR) or sleep (Brief Behavioral Intervention for Insomnia, BBTI) show promise for interdisciplinary management of chronic pain, though their feasibility with chronic musculoskeletal orofacial pain (MSK-OFP) populations remains underexplored. This pilot study assessed the feasibility of a randomized clinical trial (RCT) of these interventions in a university-affiliated tertiary OFP clinic and explored clinical changes in pain, sleep, and other secondary outcomes.

Methods: Treatment-seeking participants (N=19) with chronic MSK-OFP and insomnia were randomized to three-session PSR or BBTI. At pre- and post-intervention, participants completed questionnaires (assessing pain intensity, insomnia symptomatology, sleep …

This study used a single‑subject multiple‑baseline design across participants and skills to evaluate the effects of a modified Coach in the Kitchen curriculum paired with Behavioral Skills Training (BST) on the acquisition of kitchen safety behaviors. Three adults with high‑functioning autism were taught task‑analyzed steps for safe use of a kitchen peeler, knife, and hot liquids. Instruction incorporated modeling, rehearsal, feedback, prompting, and strategies for generalization and maintenance. Performance was measured as the percentage of safety steps correctly completed during …

Desperation Finance: Merchant Cash Advances In Bankruptcy And Beyond, Kara J. Bruce Jan 2026

Desperation Finance: Merchant Cash Advances In Bankruptcy And Beyond, Kara J. Bruce

Faculty Publications

Over the last several years, Merchant Cash Advances (“MCAs”) have risen in prominence as a form of short-term financing for distressed small businesses. MCA transactions are distinct from most small-business lending because they are not structured as loans at all. Rather, in exchange for a lump sum of cash, the merchant purports to sell to the funder an unidentified percentage of its future receipts or receivables. This structure allows funders to sidestep the application of lending regulations and usury protections, but it strains the foundations of commercial law and generates a host of interpretive challenges.

Goodbye, Nomcompetes? Policy Diffusion And State-Level Reforms, Lorenzo G. Luisetto, Norman D. Bishara Jan 2026

Goodbye, Nomcompetes? Policy Diffusion And State-Level Reforms, Lorenzo G. Luisetto, Norman D. Bishara

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Post-employment non-competition agreements (“noncompetes”) have been part of the common law dating back to at least 1414. The past 16 years have seen an unprecedented wave of scrutiny that is mostly aimed at curtailing these agreements, culminating in the contentious 2024 Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) attempted noncompete ban. With the broad FTC ban on hold for the foreseeable future, the spotlight shifts back to the states where innovation in noncompete policy is blossoming. In this study, we systematically explore the legislative and policy trends reshaping the U.S. noncompete landscape. We propose a novel typology of these reforms and apply a …
