Mechanical Property Evaluation Of Paper Die Materials In Explosive Forming, Higa Yoshikazu, Kadena Hisashi, Shimojima Ken, Iyama Hirofumi Jan 2026

Mechanical Property Evaluation Of Paper Die Materials In Explosive Forming, Higa Yoshikazu, Kadena Hisashi, Shimojima Ken, Iyama Hirofumi

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

This study investigates the feasibility of using paper materials as substitutes for molds in explosive forming by systematically evaluating their mechanical properties. Tensile tests were conducted on three paper types differing in thickness and internal fiber structure, using a custom-designed gripping tool. Specimens were prepared in multiple orientations to account for anisotropic behavior. Results indicate that coated paper, exhibiting the highest specific tensile strength and energy absorption per unit basis weight, is the most suitable for formability. In contrast, thick paper, characterized by the lowest specific tensile energy absorption, offers the best dimensional accuracy. Anisotropy was observed in matte and …

Face2cam: A User-To-Webcam Distance Estimation Image Dataset, Yixuan Zhai, Arryn Robbins Jan 2026

Face2cam: A User-To-Webcam Distance Estimation Image Dataset, Yixuan Zhai, Arryn Robbins

Psychology Faculty Publications

Estimating the distance between a user and their device’s camera is important for tasks such as gaze-aware interaction, adaptive interface scaling, and accessibility tools. Specialized depth sensors are effective but rarely available in everyday computing devices; by contrast, webcams are ubiquitous yet lack native distance information. To advance accessible distance-aware computing, we present Face2Cam, an openly available dataset of webcam images annotated with user-to-camera distances. Thirty-six adults were photographed under controlled variation of head orientation, gaze direction, and illumination, yielding 3,240 labeled images spanning distances from 30–80 cm. As a baseline, we trained a convolutional neural network as a lightweight …

Beyond Metrics: A Decade Of Building Critical Scholarship At The Interface Of Forest And Society, Muhammad Alif K. Sahide, Nurhady Sirimorok, Micah R. Fisher

Forest and Society

This editorial reflects on the first decade of Forest and Society by examining how scholarly journals can be understood beyond bibliometric indicators and ranking systems. While metrics remain influential in contemporary academic publishing, they offer only a partial account of how knowledge is produced, evaluated, and sustained. Drawing on a decade of editorial practice, the editorial foregrounds the intellectual, pedagogical, and institutional dimensions through which critical scholarship at the interface of forests and society has been cultivated. Beyond its role as a publication outlet, Forest and Society has evolved as part of a broader scholarly community, most notably through the …

Umbilical Cord Connections: Ban Huay E Kang Women's Ecological Knowledge Transmission And Mobilization, Areerat Worawongwasu, Yuting Zhou, Phyo Su San

Forest and Society

In the Pga K’nyau village of Ban Huay E Kang in the Chiang Mai province of northern Thailand, a newborn's umbilical cord is placed inside a bamboo container and hung from a tree. This is a sacred act of establishing a lifelong connection between each villager and the forest. The practice is known in the Pga K’nyau language as de paw thoo. This tradition has faced significant disruption from state-led conservation policies and the institutionalization of childbirth in state hospitals, which Ban Huay E Kang villagers contest through their revitalization of de paw thoo. Based on collaborative ethnographic research, …

The Unequal Partnership Behind Biodiversity Conservation Efforts In The Eastern Democratic Republic Of Congo, Alexandra Rasoamanana, Eliezer Majambu, Dominique Bikaba, Symphorien Ongolo, Emilie Dupuits Jan 2026

The Unequal Partnership Behind Biodiversity Conservation Efforts In The Eastern Democratic Republic Of Congo, Alexandra Rasoamanana, Eliezer Majambu, Dominique Bikaba, Symphorien Ongolo, Emilie Dupuits

Forest and Society

The growing demand for inclusivity in conservation has led international conservation organisations (ICOs) to collaborate more with local conservation organisations (LCOs). This paper assesses such partnerships through a community-led initiative establishing a wildlife corridor between Maiko and Kahuzi-Biega National Parks. In this region, resource conflicts are often cited as a political justification for recurring conservation failures. However, this framing overlooks crucial questions about how fairness and sustainability in conservation are constructed in practice, particularly within contested forestlands where multiple groups claim legitimacy over ownership. We analyse the structural conditions that enable or constrain the formation of authentic partnerships. Such partnerships …

The Efficacy Of Co-Response Teams: A Scoping Review, Kristen N. Burkhart Jan 2026

The Efficacy Of Co-Response Teams: A Scoping Review, Kristen N. Burkhart

Social Work Theses

This scoping review explores co-response teams, a coordinated response consisting of a mental health professional (MHP) and a law enforcement official (LEO). It examines the implementation, effectiveness, and outcomes of these interventions, highlighting barriers and facilitators of co-response teams. The review analyzed peer-reviewed studies from the years 2016-2026. Using the Arskey & O’Malley framework, an initial database search yielded 691 studies of which 30 were included in this review.  The review identifies four areas of ideas: legal system diversion and outcomes, frontline stakeholders' roles and friction, specialized co-response teams, and systemic barriers and resource constraints. Significant gaps remain in long-term …

Designing An Approach To Developing Students' Symbol Sense For The Derivative In Calculus, Laura E. Weinstein Jan 2026

Designing An Approach To Developing Students' Symbol Sense For The Derivative In Calculus, Laura E. Weinstein

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Students often struggle to connect the conceptual meaning of the derivative with the symbolic structures of Leibniz (dy/dx) notation. Although symbol sense has been described as the coordination of mathematical concepts, signs, and objects, little is known about how instruction can purposefully support students in developing symbol sense for the derivative. This study addresses this gap by designing and examining a learning approach aimed at helping students construct the relational structures underlying derivative notation. Using design research methodology, the study engaged intact algebra, precalculus and calculus classes in a suburban New Jersey high school across iterative cycles of design, implementation, …

The Politics Of Protection: An Analysis Of Algerian State Communication Regarding Nationals In France (2026), Sophia Schmidt Jan 2026

The Politics Of Protection: An Analysis Of Algerian State Communication Regarding Nationals In France (2026), Sophia Schmidt

International Studies Undergraduate Honors Theses

France and Algeria have long been connected, first by colonization and later through their shared histories and migratory flows. In the 1960s and 1970s, following Algerian independence, the Algerian government maintained connections with its immigrant community in France through collaboration with the French government on language and religious education and media programming. Today, as tensions rise between the two countries due to reciprocal resentment over the aftereffects of colonialism and recent international disagreements, it is necessary to examine how the Algerian government understands its own connection to and responsibility for the ever-growing population of Algerian immigrants in France. By examining …

These two regions have comparable exposure metrics, such as population size, roadway network length, and fatalities per mile traveled. Light trucks dominate the U.S. market, whereas hatchbacks are prevalent in Europe. The trendline of the average height and curb weight of the top-selling vehicles in the United States has increased by 0.24 inches and 23.52 pounds per year since 1991. The average 2025 top-selling U.S. passenger vehicle is 7.5 …

Integrated Thermal, Energy, And Structural Performance Assessment Of A Novel In-Service Shallow Geothermal Bridge Deicing System, Alireza Fakhrabadi Jan 2026

Integrated Thermal, Energy, And Structural Performance Assessment Of A Novel In-Service Shallow Geothermal Bridge Deicing System, Alireza Fakhrabadi

Civil Engineering Dissertations

Understanding the performance of bridge deck deicing systems under winter weather conditions is important for improving transportation safety and reducing long-term deterioration of bridge infrastructure. Bridge decks are more vulnerable to icing than ground-supported pavements because they are exposed to ambient air, wind, and radiation from multiple directions, while they do not receive thermal support from the underlying soil. Conventional deicing methods, especially chloride-based salts, can reduce ice formation in the short term, but repeated application may accelerate reinforcement corrosion, concrete damage, and environmental concerns. Therefore, shallow geothermal energy has been considered as a sustainable alternative for bridge deck deicing …

A Machine Learning–Based Framework For Traffic Classification And Threshold-Based Load Management In 5g Network Slicing, Safi Ibrahim, Younis S. Younis, Kamal S. Hamza, Mohamed M. Ashour

Mansoura Engineering Journal

This study proposes a machine learning–based framework that applies machine learning techniques to improve the efficiency of 5G network slicing through automated traffic classification and threshold-based load management . The proposed model optimizes resource allocation among the three standardized 5G slice types: enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication (URLLC), and massive Machine-Type Communication (mMTC). Two supervised learning algorithms—K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM)—are trained using Quality of Service (QoS) parameters such as packet delay, loss rate, and Quality Class Identifier (QCI). Experimental evaluations were conducted on two large-scale datasets containing over 400,000 traffic instances, demonstrating that the …

A Hybrid Geoid Model For The Perlis Region, Malaysia Based On Cadastral Reference Marks And A Geometric Approach, Muhammad Aiman Haiqal Abdul Malek, Muhammad Faiz Pa’Suya, Ramazan Alpay Abbak, Ami Hassan Md Din, Noorfatekah Talib Jan 2026

A Hybrid Geoid Model For The Perlis Region, Malaysia Based On Cadastral Reference Marks And A Geometric Approach, Muhammad Aiman Haiqal Abdul Malek, Muhammad Faiz Pa’Suya, Ramazan Alpay Abbak, Ami Hassan Md Din, Noorfatekah Talib

Mansoura Engineering Journal

This study presents the development of a high-resolution local geoid model for the Perlis region, Malaysia, using a geometric approach that integrates GNSS-levelling benchmarks with Cadastral Reference Mark (CRM) data. A total of 38 GNSS-levelling benchmarks were used as reference points, while 3,725 CRMs were incorporated to significantly enhance spatial coverage for geoid modelling. Orthometric heights at the CRM points were first determined by transferring heights from the reference benchmarks using gravimetric geoid information. Subsequently, geometric geoid heights were computed from the differences between ellipsoidal and orthometric heights. Five interpolation techniques were evaluated to generate the geometric geoid surface, namely …

Clean Rides, Healthy Lives: The Impact Of Electric Vehicle Adoption On Air Quality And Infant Health, Cavit Baran, Janet Currie, Bahadır Dursun, Erdal Teki Jan 2026

Clean Rides, Healthy Lives: The Impact Of Electric Vehicle Adoption On Air Quality And Infant Health, Cavit Baran, Janet Currie, Bahadır Dursun, Erdal Teki

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper provides the first nationwide U.S. evidence on the effects of electric vehicle (EV) adoption on air quality and child health. Using county-level data from 2010–2021, we link EV registrations to air pollution, birth outcomes, and emergency department visits. Endogenous adoption is addressed using two-way fixed effects and an instrumental variables strategy exploiting the rollout of federally designated Alternative Fuel Corridors. Greater EV adoption significantly lowers nitrogen dioxide and improves infant and child health, reducing very low birth weight, prematurity, and asthma-related emergency visits. The largest health gains occur in high-pollution areas and exceed $1.2–$4.0 billion annually.

Four Feedback Tips For A Fifth Year, Annika Nielson Jan 2026

Four Feedback Tips For A Fifth Year, Annika Nielson

The Utah English Journal

Over the past four years of teaching writing, I’ve picked up a few lessons. One is that students will wait until the very last minute to submit a piece, no matter how much in-class drafting time I build into the schedule. Another is that many students see writing as big, bad, and boring: they have been trained to think that their writing will be corrected with red pens and long lists of mistakes.

The Non-Punishment Principle And Restorative Justice, Rachel J. Wechsler Jan 2026

The Non-Punishment Principle And Restorative Justice, Rachel J. Wechsler

Faculty Publications

The non-punishment principle is a legal norm that has increasingly gained legitimacy over the past quarter-century within international, regional, and domestic law on human trafficking. At its core, this principle opposes the punishment of human trafficking victims for unlawful conduct they engage in as a consequence of their trafficking victimization. Little is known about the presence and operation of the non-punishment principle within U.S. law. This Article fills this gap as the first to comprehensively map and analyze the principle’s instantiation across state and federal law.

From this new map, three key themes emerge. First, the non-punishment principle has a …

Taxing Dynasties, David Gamage, Brian D. Galle, Bob Lord Jan 2026

Taxing Dynasties, David Gamage, Brian D. Galle, Bob Lord

Faculty Publications

The estate tax and the broader wealth-transfer-tax system are even more broken than is commonly understood. Over the past two decades, researchers and policy experts have identified a handful of key tactics that mega-rich families use to pass wealth from generation to generation without paying tax. These tax dodges are notorious enough to be known by their acronyms, such as the IDGT and the GRAT. Scholars and policymakers have proposed reforms to block these tactics, or at least to make them more difficult.

In this Article, we present new analysis, backed by new empirical findings, to show that these proposed …

Fda After Loper Bright, Erika Lietzan Jan 2026

Fda After Loper Bright, Erika Lietzan

Faculty Publications

Loper Bright, which overruled the Chevron decision from 1984, tells us that a court should determine the meaning of all statutory provisions for itself, rather than deferring to the views of the federal agencies that implement those provisions. But the overruling of Chevron may have less of an impact on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration than conventional wisdom supposes. Most challenges to FDA action do not concern its statutory interpretations. And the agency prevailed in most cases involving statutory interpretation, before the Chevron doctrine took hold. After 1984, when the doctrine did apply, the agency often lost cases at …

Estimating Short-Term And Long-Term Survival For Patients With Kidney Failure Using A Mixture Survival Model, Nathan Meyer, Maxwell Donelan, Hossein Moradi Rekabdarkolaee, Brandon Varilek, Surachat Ngorsuraches, Patti Brooks, Jerry Schrier, Semhar Michael Jan 2026

Estimating Short-Term And Long-Term Survival For Patients With Kidney Failure Using A Mixture Survival Model, Nathan Meyer, Maxwell Donelan, Hossein Moradi Rekabdarkolaee, Brandon Varilek, Surachat Ngorsuraches, Patti Brooks, Jerry Schrier, Semhar Michael

Journal Articles: College of Nursing

Rationale & Objective

Traditional survival models assume all patients receiving kidney replacement therapy (KRT) may be grouped into one population, overlooking long-term survivors, particularly successful transplant recipients, and may fail to appreciate the disparities in minority populations. On the other hand, a mixture survival model allows for the estimation of hazard and odds ratios of all-cause mortality in patients with kidney failure undergoing either dialysis or transplantation.

Study Design

This retrospective cohort study analyzed survival outcomes using a proportional hazards mixture survival model, comparing results to a traditional Cox proportional hazards model with time-varying modality of treatment.

Setting & Participants …

Do-It-Yourself Reparations, Martha M. Ertman Jan 2026

Do-It-Yourself Reparations, Martha M. Ertman

Faculty Scholarship

The magnitude of harms like white supremacy makes it difficult to precisely identify losses, let alone remedy them. Piecemeal approaches are essential, and private efforts may be the only option when public law and cultural norms deny or perpetuate the harms. This Article addresses one racial harm, the 10:1 racial wealth gap between white and black Americans, in the context of residential segregation over the past century. It contends that the equitable doctrine of restitution enables us to recognize and remedy the unjust enrichment enjoyed by white Baby Boomers caused by private law mechanisms such as racially restrictive covenants, all …

Protecting Those Who Protect Us: A Blueprint For Mandatory Mental Wellness Standards For First Responders, Joy Hutchinson Jan 2026

Protecting Those Who Protect Us: A Blueprint For Mandatory Mental Wellness Standards For First Responders, Joy Hutchinson

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

First responders, including firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency medical technicians (EMTs), dispatchers/telecommunicators, and corrections officers, serve as the backbone of public safety in the United States. Their work requires rapid decision-making, repeated exposure to traumatic events, and sustained emotional regulation in high-stakes environments (Hoell et al., 2023; Vig et al., 2020). Despite their critical roles, mental health support across these professions remains inconsistent, optional, and largely reactive rather than preventative, with many systems relying on self-referral only after crisis onset (Burke, 2021; Johnston et al., 2025).

Between 2021 and 2025, U.S.-based research has documented alarming levels of burnout, depression, anxiety, …

The Suppression Of The Opelousas Massacre Of 1868: The Blackleg Hunt Or “La Chasse A’ La Jambe Noire”, August Malveaux Jan 2026

The Suppression Of The Opelousas Massacre Of 1868: The Blackleg Hunt Or “La Chasse A’ La Jambe Noire”, August Malveaux

The Griot - Southern Conference on African American Studies, Inc.

This article examines the suppression of the 1868 Opelousas Massacre—also known as “la chasse à la jambe noire” or the Blackleg Hunt—and situates it within the broader landscape of Reconstruction-era racial violence in Louisiana. Malveaux argues that the massacre was not an isolated riot but a premeditated act of political terrorism designed to eliminate Black electoral participation and reverse Reconstruction gains. Triggered by Black political mobilization and white supremacist resistance, the violence unfolded over several days in September 1868 and resulted in widespread murder, intimidation, and property destruction. The essay challenges the historiographical minimization of the event, emphasizing how organized …

The International Order, International Law, And The Definition Of Security, Harlan Grant Cohen Jan 2026

The International Order, International Law, And The Definition Of Security, Harlan Grant Cohen

Michigan Journal of International Law

As economic security has seemingly moved to the center of American and European foreign policy, both the United States and the European Union have broadened their interpretation of international law rules governing security, coercion, and intervention. But these interpretations are not exactly new, echoing developing state interpretations of international law that developed states had long ago seemingly rejected. How are these once moribund interpretations of security, force, and coercion being brought back to life?

This article argues that these interpretative shifts highlight the role of the international order as an interpretative mechanism within international law. Borrowing from the work of …
