Students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and developmental delays often require consistent therapeutic interventions such as speech therapy, occupational therapy (OT), or applied behavior analysis (ABA) in order to meaningfully access their education (Treatment and Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorder, 2024). However, service shortages, scheduling barriers, and restrictions on outside providers during the school day frequently create gaps in care. As a result, families may be forced to choose between their child’s educational attendance and the continuity of medically or developmentally necessary services.
House Bill 2327 and corresponding Senate Bill 2055 seek to address this barrier by requiring Local Education …
Dred Scott By Any Other Name: The New War Over Abortion And The Right To Travel After Dobbs, Wesley Mark Kimler
Dred Scott By Any Other Name: The New War Over Abortion And The Right To Travel After Dobbs, Wesley Mark Kimler
SPARK Symposium Presentations
After the decision in Dred Scott v. Sandford and the Fugitive Slave Acts, slave states could effectively undermine the laws of free Northern states and deny African Americans the constitutional right to travel. Today, the denial of that right is faced by a different group. Where once the right to travel was denied to African Americans, it is now being denied to women and pregnant people. In addition to banning abortion, several states have enacted so-called "abortion trafficking" laws which make it a crime to assist a minor in procuring an abortion, even if that abortion is to take place …
A Macrocognitive Design Taxonomy For Simulation-Based Training Systems: Bridging Cognitive Theory And Human-Computer Interaction, Jessica M. Johnson
A Macrocognitive Design Taxonomy For Simulation-Based Training Systems: Bridging Cognitive Theory And Human-Computer Interaction, Jessica M. Johnson
Virginia Digital Maritime Center (VDMC) Faculty Publications
Simulation-based training systems are increasingly deployed to prepare learners for complex, safety-critical, and dynamic work environments. While advances in computing have enabled immersive and data-rich simulations, many systems remain optimized for procedural accuracy and surface-level task performance rather than the macrocognitive processes that underpin adaptive expertise. Macrocognition encompasses higher-order cognitive processes that are essential for performance transfer beyond controlled training conditions. When these processes are insufficiently supported, training systems risk fostering brittle strategies and negative training effects. This paper introduces a macrocognitive design taxonomy for simulation-based training systems derived from a large-scale meta-analysis examining the transfer of macrocognitive skills from …

Hfpo-Da Aquatic Toxicity And Bioaccumulation, Bailey Dawn Rappold
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been detected globally in environmental media and biota. Legacy compounds PFOA and PFOS have been observed to be toxic and bioaccumulative in low doses and have been removed from production and industrial processes. Replacement PFAS chemicals are less understood and present a gap in current knowledge in their toxicological effects. This research utilized extended chronic toxicity studies to assess the impacts of HFPO-DA, a short chain replacement PFAS, on the standard aquatic toxicology organism Pimephales promelas. Organisms were exposed for 29 to 30 days at environmentally relevant concentrations of the toxicant, 7.8125 ng/L …

Havens For Corporate Lawbreaking, William J. Moon
Havens For Corporate Lawbreaking, William J. Moon

Whether corporations are obligated to maximize profits or if they ought to consider societal interests more broadly remains one of the most highly contested debates in corporate law. Yet even the fiercest defenders of the firm’s profit motive concede that the corporation’s profit-seeking function cannot justify breaking the law. As a matter of American corporate law, directors and officers are in breach of their fiduciary duties if they facilitate or engage in profit-maximizing illegal activities. Or so we thought.
This Essay reveals a troubling trend of jurisdictions undercutting the legal compliance obligations of directors and officers. The current legal architecture …

Tobacco is a major cause of chronic diseases such as lung cancer, cardiovascular disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease worldwide. Nicotine, the primary psychoactive component in tobacco, is highly addictive and while not the primary driver of such tobacco-related diseases, poses various health risks, particularly those affecting the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems. Although nicotine-based therapies, such as nicotine replacement products, are widely utilized in smoking cessation efforts today, the impact of newer, tobacco delivery systems such as electronic nicotine delivery systems, or ENDS, remains uncertain and warrants continued evaluation. This study aims to develop and validate a physiologically based pharmacokinetic …

The Effects Of Antidepressant Medications On Sleep Quality In Dominican University Of California Students, Natalie L. Davis, Kenna Wohlford, Stephanie Lee
Physician Assistant Studies | Graduate Research Papers
We spend approximately one third of our life time sleeping or attempting to sleep. The quality of our sleep is equally, if not more important than the amount of sleep we get. This study assesses the effects that medications, specifically antidepressants, can have on sleep quality in Dominican University of California students. 118 participants completed a Qualtrics survey including questions regarding stress, sleep quality, medication lists, and demographics. This study utilized the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to quantify participants’ sleep quality as the outcome. Participant stress levels were assessed with a Likert scale question asking for stress levels on …

Remembering Courtney Cazden, 1925–2025, Kris D. Gutiérrez, Allan Luke, Mary Kalantzis, Bill Cope, Sarah Michaels, James Paul Gee
Education
Here we remember and honor Courtney B. Cazden (1925–2025), whose scholarship, mentorship, and moral clarity profoundly shaped the study of language, literacy, and learning. Drawing on our shared experiences as colleagues, collaborators, students, and friends, we reflect on Courtney's enduring contributions to classroom discourse analysis, bilingual and Indigenous education, sociocultural theories of learning, and the pedagogy of multiliteracies. Across the personal and professional reflections gathered here, we recount how Courtney's work consistently foregrounded classroom discourse as a site of learning, identity formation, and educational justice, while refusing false binaries between theory and practice, immersion and explicit instruction, critique and care. …
Teaching Contracts: My Journey With Spellbook And Ai Pedagogy, Gregory M. Duhl
Teaching Contracts: My Journey With Spellbook And Ai Pedagogy, Gregory M. Duhl
Faculty Scholarship
I am integrating Spellbook, an AI tool for contract drafting and review, into my first-year law school Contracts course in Spring 2026. Although Spellbook is highly effective, its educational value hinges on the pedagogical framework structured around it, a framework typically not licensed along with AI tools. In-house instructional design expertise can provide this framework, and the professor-instructional designer partnership offers one model for successful AI integration. Strong tools paired with robust instructional design yield learning experiences in which AI augments, rather than supplants, the cultivation of legal judgment and critical thinking. This collaborative approach, among educators, instructional designers, and …

Antitrust & The Immoral Energy Economy, Kristen Van De Biezendos

The age of climate change is upon us, but regulations and programs intended to decarbonize the electricity sector have been effectively stymied by utilities defending their monopoly power. The lack of robust antitrust enforcement against the utilities to date is a result of the belief that regulation is sufficient to police monopoly anticompetitive activity, that the natural monopoly structure of utilities makes them a poor fit for antitrust principles, and that the utilities are immune from Sherman Act claims under the state action exemption. But these rationales reflect a misunderstanding of the purpose of public utility law and its preference …

Analyzing Barriers And Solutions In Advancing Long-Term English Learners’ Academic Communication, Tania Y. Flores Segundo
Doctor of Education (EdD)
U.S. public schools offer language services to students whose first language is not English to help them reach their full learning potential and ensure equitable educational access for all students. Despite initial support, many students remain labeled as English learners for 7 or more years, creating systemic barriers to academic reclassification. This study used raciolinguistic perspectives to examine how English was seen as a deficit when not yet mastered. The culturally responsive school leadership framework helped to understand what is needed to strengthen learning communities and optimize the academic communication skills of long-term English learners and all English learners. A Qualitative Case Study On Pacific Northwest K-12 Christian School Administrators’ Perceptions Of Critical Thinking As Part Of Their Schools’ Missional Fulfillment, Shawn Lorenzen
Doctor of Education (EdD)
This qualitative case study examined how K–12 Christian school administrators in the Pacific Northwest perceived critical thinking (CT) as part of their schools’ missional fulfillment and the extent to which those perceptions aligned with school mission statements and related missional outcome documents. Guided by a conceptual framework focused on administrator perceptions of CT and the missional language of institutional documents, the study used multiple sources of evidence, including open-ended surveys, document analysis, and follow-up interviews. The bounded sample included Christian schools in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho affiliated with ACSI, ACCS, and/or SCL in which CT appeared in public mission-related language. …

From Fog To Function: An Occupational Therapist's Guide To Evaluating And Treating Cancer-Related Cognitive Impairments, Lauren E. Toner
Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctorate - Doctoral Capstone Symposium
Cancer – related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is a common side effect of cancer treatment that interferes with cancer survivors’ occupational performance, independence, and quality of life. Despite its high prevalence, CRCI remains under recognized and inconsistently addressed within oncology care. About 70% of individuals diagnosed with cancer report cognitive changes during or after treatment, yet many do not receive treatment. Occupational therapists are clinically trained to evaluate and treat functional cognition, activities of daily activities, instrumental activities of daily living, and client centered goals, positioning them as key providers in addressing CRCI. However, limited occupational therapy specific resources have hindered …
