University Resilience: Examining The Relationship Of Acute, Externally-Driven Crisis Events To University Enrollment And Financial Stability, Amy Kyhos
Dissertations
This dissertation investigated the phenomenon of a significant, acute, externally-driven crisis event on university resilience at four-year, tuition-driven, public and private higher education institutions in the United States of America. The study primarily considered the resilience indicators of university undergraduate enrollment and financial stability through the crisis context of COVID-19. It is theorized that a perceived lack of reliability, flexibility, and pace to evolve that higher education exhibited during and shortly after COVID-19 is a sustained point of vulnerability to a field under increasing review from a range of stakeholders and points of financial and public pressure. The study contemplated …
Participatory Budgeting And Electoral Outcomes In North American Cities, Gabriela Raluca Pavel
Participatory Budgeting And Electoral Outcomes In North American Cities, Gabriela Raluca Pavel
Dissertations
The dissatisfaction with democratic processes and the low participation rates we see trending in cities around the world, have inspired practitioners to experiment with new democratic practices. Scholars of participatory democracy have argued that when people participate in one democratic activity, they are more likely to engage in other activities. Therefore, this project clarifies the expectations set for a specific type of process, called Participatory Budgeting (PB). The two questions I address in this project look at the relationship between PB and voter turnout in local elections, and PB and incumbency retention rates for those who implement the process in …
Revisiting Collective Efficacy: Insights From Cognitive Interviews And Experimental Surveys, Tori Kay Olson
Revisiting Collective Efficacy: Insights From Cognitive Interviews And Experimental Surveys, Tori Kay Olson
Dissertations
This three-part study revisits the collective efficacy scale developed by Sampson and colleagues in the 1990s to see if the scale needs updating. Defined as community cohesion and social control, collective efficacy is often used in community research to explain crime rates. The first phase uses cognitive interviews to understand how survey respondents interpret the original collective efficacy survey. The interview data then helps create new versions of the ten questions in the second phase. In the third phase, ChatGPT generates a revised version of the collective efficacy scale. The study employs a split-ballot experimental survey to test whether the …

Qsox1: A Mysterious Golgi-Localized Disulfide Bond Catalyst And An Emerging Cancer Regulator, Shike Wang, Guan-Yu Xiao, Xiaochao Tan
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Quiescin sulfhydryl oxidase 1 (QSOX1) is a disulfide bond-forming enzyme with both disulfide isomerase and oxidoreductase activities. It plays an important role in protein folding, stability, and secretion. Growing evidence demonstrates that QSOX1 is upregulated in multiple cancer types and influences key behaviors of cancer cells, including proliferation, migration, invasion, and metastasis. Elevated QSOX1 expression is also associated with tumor malignancy and disease relapse. However, the molecular mechanisms by which QSOX1 drives cancer progression remain incompletely understood. In this review, we summarize current knowledge of QSOX1 expression and regulation in cancer, discuss its functional roles, and highlight key unanswered questions …

Distress Calls As Social Stressors Affecting Chicken Welfare, Katherine A. Herborn, Benjamin Wilson, Sarah A. Collins, Malcolm A. Mitchell, Alan G. Mcelligott, Lucy Asher
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Social signals about current environmental risks can shape development in young animals. Distress calls made by young chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) may also encode affective state, with high arousal, potentially ‘anxiety-like’ state characterized by continuous calling, and learned helplessness or potentially ‘depression-like’ state by a more intermittent pattern. During early life (age 4–7 days), we played chicks artificial stimuli mimicking these two call patterns. Growth effects suggest caller affective state can modulate this social signal: chicks exposed to bouts of ‘Continuous’ calls grew faster and were heavier by late commercial life (day 43) than Controls. In contrast, chicks exposed to …

Emerging therapies in sickle cell disease (SCD) aim to restore healthy red blood cell (RBC) function, but they often yield heterogeneous cellular responses. There are no proven techniques to evaluate restored rheological functionality and heterogeneity in these RBCs. We present a biomimetic microcapillary network, high-speed imaging, and computational algorithms to analyze RBC capillary velocity profiles of the entire sample population at single-cell resolution. Using peripheral RBCs from SCD patients and healthy donors, we showed that RBC capillary transit velocity correlated with cell shape, hydrodynamic adaptability, and elongation index. Healthy RBCs exhibited a velocity distribution skewed toward higher values, whereas RBCs …

The family Arenaviridae encompasses zoonotic, rodent-borne pathogens (e.g., Lassa, Machupo, and Junín viruses) that cause severe viral hemorrhagic fevers with high case fatality rates. The current therapeutic landscape is severely limited, underscoring the urgent need for novel antiviral strategies. A promising approach involves combining directly acting antivirals with host-targeted antivirals. A compelling host-targeted antiviral target is the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR). This ubiquitous ligand-activated transcription factor is a recognized pro-viral host factor across multiple viral families. Building on prior work with Junín and Tacaribe viruses, we investigated whether the AHR inhibitor CH223191 could enhance the virus-directed antiviral activity of favipiravir …
The Role Of Familism In The Relationship Between Ethnic Identity And Sleep In Hispanic/Latino Adults: Results From The Hispanic Community Health Study/Study Of Latinos (Hchs/Sol), Tetyana Krutsik
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
Hispanic/Latino individuals in the U.S. face sleep health disparities, reporting higher rates of short sleep duration and fragmented sleep compared to non-Hispanic white individuals. While Hispanic/Latino immigrants initially report better sleep health than their U.S.-born counterparts, prolonged residence in the U.S. is associated with worsening sleep, possibly due to acculturative stress. Ethnic identity and familism are cultural factors that have been correlated with positive health outcomes, even mitigating the adverse effects of acculturative stress and discrimination. However, little is known about the associations between these cultural factors and sleep health outcomes. This study aimed to examine the effect of ethnic …

The Optical Counterparts Of Compact X-Ray Binaries In The Globular Cluster Ngc 6266, Scott Legeza
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
Globular clusters provide valuable insight into the formation of galaxies and stars. As some of the oldest structures in the Milky Way Galaxy, the stars that make up clusters are some of the oldest witnesses to the formation of our Galaxy, and in some cases, the Universe itself. Additionally, clusters are an excellent source of X-ray information, and the positions of X-ray sources tend to correlate with the positions of globular clusters. As such, studying globular clusters is an excellent way to study galactic compact X-ray binary stars. We present a study of the globular cluster NGC 6266, and perform …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study examined how cognitive and contextual factors jointly predict Chinese preschoolers’ science learning from the educational television program Big Bird Looks at the World (BBLW). Grounded in Fisch’s capacity model and Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological theory, the research aimed to clarify how children’s cognitive resources and ecological conditions interact to shape learning from media. Using secondary data from a large experimental sample of Chinese preschoolers (N = 849) across multiple regions, hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) was employed to estimate the relative contributions of predictors at the child and regional levels. Child-level variables included prior science knowledge, memory capacity, interest, age, household …

Broken Symmetry Effects On Anisotropy And Switching In Magnetic Thin Films, Kazi Zahirul Islam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The performance of spintronics devices such as data storage, magnetic memory, read heads, logic technology and magnetic sensors are driven by a complex interplay of a variety of material parameters, which in turn determine a wide range of performance metrics such as radiation hardness, scalability, speed and energies needed for operation. Magnetic anisotropy represents one of these key material properties influencing magnetization dynamics, and ultimately, functionality of a variety of spintronic devices. Therefore, understanding and controlling magnetic anisotropy is essential for the further development of the devices. While magnetic anisotropy can be intrinsic to a specific material, symmetry breaking is …

In this consolidated non-renewal holdover seeking eviction under GCEL's demolition ground (RPL § 216[h]), the court denies both the landlord's motion to strike the tenants' defenses and the tenants' motions to dismiss. The court holds 'housing accommodation' under RPL § 211[1] includes individual units, but finds the landlord's architectural report insufficient to prove demolition rather than renovation, leaving that factual dispute for trial under a clear-and-convincing standard.

The tenant appealed from an order and judgment affirming the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal's (DHCR) determination that the tenant and her daughter lacked succession rights to a Mitchell-Lama apartment. The court affirmed the lower court's decision to grant the landlord's cross-motion to dismiss the proceeding, finding DHCR's determination was rational and not arbitrary or capricious. DHCR concluded that the tenant failed to provide sufficient documentation to establish primary residence for the required two-year period prior to the aunt's death or that she was a "family member" for succession purposes.

Grassroots Governance And Resilience: The Role Of Barangay Disaster Communication Amid Political Uncertainty, Karl Lenin Calaramo Benigno, Elsie Pilar, Yolanda Sabado-Lao
Jurnal Wacana Politik
This study examines the role of barangay-level communication in disaster preparedness and response amid political uncertainty, focusing on Ilocos Norte, Philippines. Specifically, it investigates how comprehension of disaster warnings and COVID-19-related terms affects citizens’ compliance, and how demographic and barangay-related factors moderate this relationship. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving surveys of 44 respondents (household heads, barangay officials, and Sangguniang Kabataan officers) and key informant interviews to document communication practices, sources of information, and community trust. Statistical analysis revealed a strong positive correlation (r = 0.843, p < 0.001) between comprehension and compliance, highlighting the critical role of understanding in disaster response. Findings also show that traditional communication channels, such as barangay announcements and personal networks, remain central, while political uncertainty can indirectly undermine trust and affect message adherence. Youth participation via SK initiatives contributes to information dissemination but requires enhanced resources and training. This study contributes novel insights by integrating statistical evidence, qualitative analysis, and political context to explain the dynamics of grassroots disaster communication. Policy recommendations include capacity-building, hybrid communication strategies, participatory governance, youth engagement, and integration of political risk into preparedness planning, aimed at enhancing resilience and adaptive capacity in local communities.

INTRODUCTION: The Standardized Letter of Evaluation (SLOE) is a core component of emergency medicine (EM) residency applications, designed to assess clinical performance, professionalism, and leadership potential. While its utility in selecting residency candidates is well established, its association with future leadership roles, such as chief resident, remains unclear. Identifying early indicators of leadership potential could inform both recruitment and resident development efforts. In this study we aimed to evaluate whether medical students' SLOEs are associated with subsequent selection as chief residents, offering insight into the SLOE's potential to forecast future leadership within EM.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of …

Marine cold-spells are an understudied phenomena which can both negatively impact marine wildlife and provide thermal refugia for species displaced by climate change. To develop forward-looking and climate-ready management schemes, it is critical to examine how marine species respond to cold-spells, how long-term warming will affect marine cold-spells over the next century, and how these future cold-spells will in turn affect species of conservation concern, particularly in marine protected areas. To this end, we detect marine cold-spells across the California Current System, a productive Eastern Boundary Upwelling System, relative to a fixed baseline (1980–2009) and to a detrended time series …

BACKGROUND: Impaired integrin activation on neutrophils is the hallmark of leukocyte adhesion deficiency syndrome in humans, characterized by reduced leukocyte recruitment. The regulation of intracellular calcium levels in neutrophils is important for cellular processes; however, the exact role of store-operated calcium entry (SOCE) and the involvement of stromal interaction molecule (STIM) calcium sensors, and ORAI1-3 calcium channels in neutrophil activation and recruitment is unknown.
METHODS: Using an acute kidney injury (AKI) model, intravital microscopy, and biochemical studies, we examined the molecular mechanisms of Ca
RESULTS: We demonstrate that STIM1 and ORAI1 in neutrophils are selectively required for E-selectin- and CXCL-1-, …
