INTRODUCTION: The Women First (WF) Preconception Maternal Nutrition trial found greater benefits of small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (SQ-LNS) for intrauterine growth among anaemic versus non-anaemic women at preconception. We investigated whether the benefits of SQ-LNS in improving markers of intrauterine growth occurred evenly across the mild to moderate spectrum of pre-pregnancy anaemia.

METHODS: We analysed WF data (n=2443 maternal-newborn dyads) from Pakistan, India, Guatemala and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Women received SQ-LNS either ≥3 months preconception through pregnancy (Arm 1); starting in the late first trimester (Arm 2); or not at all (Arm 3: control), with all supplementations discontinued …

Spine stereotactic radiotherapy and radiosurgery (SSRS) techniques, encompassing both fractionated stereotactic treatments and single-fraction radiosurgery, are widely used for the management of spinal metastases due to their ability to deliver highly conformal radiation while limiting dose to adjacent critical structures. Clinical outcomes following SSRS, including durable local control and acceptable toxicity, have been reported previously in multiple institutional series. In this manuscript, we describe the clinical workflow used to deliver SSRS at a high-volume academic center, with emphasis on the medical physics processes that support routine clinical practice. Key elements of the workflow include patient selection, treatment region-specific immobilization, CT …

Review Of Bootstrap Applications, Joshua Russell Jan 2026

Review Of Bootstrap Applications, Joshua Russell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

We investigate the bootstrap methodology and current applications. The bootstrap is a non-parametric resampling method that has universal applicability thanks to the statistical concepts of weak convergence, the law of large numbers, and the central limit theorem. Modern applications of bootstrap methodology have demonstrated time and time again that it is computationally efficient and robust. The earliest days of the bootstrap saw it validated by generating statistics, confidence intervals, and hypothesis tests. It is important to note the universal application and efficiency of the bootstrap, especially when researchers are tempted to utilize the more financially and computationally expensive techniques of …

This study describes the development and analysis of a detailed finite element model of the Hunter Harrison Memorial Bridge, a cable-supported pedestrian bridge at the University of Mem-phis. The numerical model was created in SAP2000 using construction drawings and includes the reinforced concrete tower, steel floor beams, concrete deck slab, and stay cable system with the correct material properties and boundary conditions. Modal analysis was conducted to find the natural frequencies and mode shapes …

Multiaxial Fatigue Of Welded Joints: Experiments And Modeling, Ahmad Razi Jan 2026

Multiaxial Fatigue Of Welded Joints: Experiments And Modeling, Ahmad Razi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Welding is arguably the most widely used method for joining parts, which often experience fluctuating loads during service and cyclic damage accounts for most mechanical failures in weldments. Hence, fatigue and failure assessment of the welded joints is an essential step in design process to ensure reliable performance. This work investigates experimental and predictive determination of weld metal properties, evaluates multiaxial fatigue of welded tubular joints featuring important geometric traits of welds (i.e., start/stop and partial penetration), and demonstrates application of the results to fatigue analysis of a welded component. Monotonic, cyclic, and fatigue properties of steel weld specimens of …

School of Medicine Publications

Boerhaave’s syndrome is a rare and life-threatening form of spontaneous esophageal perforation, typically triggered by forceful vomiting and often misdiagnosed due to nonspecific clinical features. Although Mackler’s triad (vomiting, chest pain, and subcutaneous emphysema) is classically associated with the condition, it is infrequently observed in full. We present the case of a 32-year-old man with a history of ulcerative colitis (UC) who presented to the emergency department with acute chest pain and repeated vomiting following dinner. He reported a sensation of food impaction and sought care 2 hours after symptom onset. Examination revealed subcutaneous emphysema and abdominal tenderness. Imaging with …

All Decisions

In this non-primary residence holdover proceeding, the court granted the landlord's motion for discovery concerning the tenant's residency, but limited the scope of document production to the most recent lease term. Concurrently, the court partially granted the tenant's cross-motion for discovery related to her defense of excusable absence due to uninhabitable apartment conditions, citing ample need based on mold reports and HPD violations. However, the tenant's request for discovery regarding illegal subletting was denied. The case was marked off-calendar pending completion of the ordered, albeit limited, discovery from both parties.

Women In Law And The Draft, Thomas Helgerman, Benjamin David Pyle Jan 2026

Women In Law And The Draft, Thomas Helgerman, Benjamin David Pyle

Faculty Scholarship

Between 1964 and 1973, women’s representation in full-time law school programs rose fivefold, from 3.7% to 20.1%. This paper examines whether Vietnam War draft policy contributed to this increase. In 1968, men enrolled in law school lost eligibility for 2-S student deferments, threatening law schools’ tuition revenues and incentivizing schools to admit more women to stabilize enrollment. To test this mechanism, we construct a school-by-year dataset of enrollment counts split by women/men and full-time/part-time status. Using a uniform adoption difference-in-differences design, we find that women’s representation rises by 2 percentage points in full-time programs relative to part-time programs (which were …

Adult mammalian hearts exhibit limited regenerative capacity because of the restricted renewal of cardiomyocytes. Recent studies reveal that mammalian hearts exhibit transient regenerative potential within a short time frame after birth, suggesting a regulatory mechanism that prevents adult hearts from initiating a regenerative response to cardiac injury. Here, we discovered that an active form of YAP, named YAP6SA, which is not inhibited by the Hippo signaling pathway and does not interact with TEADs, induces cardiomyocyte cell cycle reentry. In addition, YAP6SA interacts with scaffold protein MPDZ to regulate Rho GTPases and promote cell cycle progression in cardiomyocytes (CMs). Importantly, YAP6SA …

Introducing "Visual Bibliographies" As A Novel Tool For Communicating Complexity: A Knowledge Translation Case Study From Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Research, Kathleen P. Conte, Alison Laycock, Jodie Bailie, Veronica Matthews, Ross Bailie

Homelessness Research & Action Collaborative Publications and Presentations

Background

Effective knowledge translation ensures health care research has desired impacts – this is particularly important for Indigenous communities who have historically not benefited from research about and on them. Yet much knowledge translation in Indigenous contexts continues without community partnerships and disregards Indigenous values, languages and knowledge-sharing practices. Visual approaches can be engaging knowledge translation strategies that align with Indigenous knowledge translation traditions and amplify Indigenous perspectives. In this paper, we introduce a new tool we have coined a “Visual Bibliography” for knowledge generation and translation, developed within a large-scale, participatory research collaboration in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander …

A Qualitative Examination Of The Motivations For Homeschooling Among Black Americans, Portia J. Witt Jan 2026

A Qualitative Examination Of The Motivations For Homeschooling Among Black Americans, Portia J. Witt

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This qualitative phenomenological study explored the motivations and lived experiences of African American homeschooling families. Twelve Black parents from multiple states participated in semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using Moustakas’ (1994) Modified Stevick–Colaizzi–Keen method and coded thematically using NVivo. Nine themes emerged: autonomy, holistic education, community belonging, online networks, public resources, curriculum gaps, personal values, effective learning, and legacy of harm. While racialization in schools—including tracking, microaggressions, and misidentification—contributed to participants’ decisions, motivations also reflected intersectional factors such as faith, disability, mental health needs, giftedness, and a desire for cultural protection and flexible learning. Findings suggest homeschooling serves as a …

Diffuse midline gliomas (DMG) are aggressive pediatric brain tumors characterized by chromatin and transcriptional dysregulation induced by H3K27M mutations. Strategies for overcoming epigenetic dysfunction to reduce DMG tumorigenesis remain limited. We identified multiple components of the SAGA and ATAC chromatin regulatory complexes as DMG genetic dependencies and found that genetic or pharmacological inhibition of the SAGA/ATAC-associated chromatin reader SGF29 reduces DMG proliferation. Small molecules targeting SAGA/ATAC-associated histone acetylation, ubiquitination, and methylation similarly suppressed DMG growth. Further chromatin profiling and RNAseq analyses reveal that SGF29 controls H3K9ac and H3K4me3 dynamics at both H3K27M-bound and H3K27M-independent target genes linked to proliferation, differentiation, …

Scaling Pedestrian Crossing Analysis To 100 U.S. Cities Via Ai-Based Segmentation Of Satellite Imagery, Marcel E. Moran, Arunav Gupta, Jiali Qian, Debra Laefer

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Accurately measuring street dimensions is essential to evaluating how their design influences both travel behavior and safety. However, gathering street-level information at city-scale with precision is difficult given the quantity and complexity of urban intersections. To address this challenge in the context of pedestrian crossings — a crucial component of walkability — we introduce a scalable and accurate method for automatically measuring crossing distance at both marked and unmarked crosswalks, applied to America’s 100 largest cities. First, OpenStreetMap coordinates were used to retrieve satellite imagery of intersections throughout each city — totaling roughly three million images. Next, Meta’s Segment Anything …

Intestinal macrophages are essential for epithelial barrier repair. In homeostasis, macrophages are continuously replenished by recruitment of circulating CCR2+ monocytes into the intestinal lamina propria. This requires the commensal microbiota, however, the specific microbial factors and downstream host pathways that coordinate macrophage replenishment are inadequately understood. Here, we show that colonization with an E. coli isolate increased CCR2+ macrophages in the intestine and ameliorated pathology in a colitis model. Using human colonic organoids, we showed E. coli colonization induced CCL2 secretion by intestinal epithelial stem cells which promoted monocyte migration. In vivo, protection was abolished in the absence of epithelial …

Fyn-Saracatinib Complex Structure Reveals An Active State-Like Conformation, Hai Minh Ta, Banumathi Sankaran, Eric D Roush, Josephine C Ferreon, Allan Chris M Ferreon, Choel Kim

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Fyn is a Src-family tyrosine kinase implicated in synaptic dysfunction and neuroinflammation across multiple neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). Saracatinib (AZD0530) is a potent Src-family inhibitor that has been explored as a repurposed therapeutic; however, its clinical utility is limited by poor kinase selectivity caused by high sequence conservation within Src-family ATP-binding sites. Here, we combine surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and X-ray crystallography to define saracatinib recognition by the Fyn kinase domain (KD). SPR single-cycle kinetics shows that saracatinib binds the isolated Fyn KD and full-length Fyn with low-nanomolar affinity, whereas dasatinib binds with subnanomolar …

Two Axes Of White Matter Development, Audrey C Luo, Deanna M Barch, Et Al. Jan 2026

Two Axes Of White Matter Development, Audrey C Luo, Deanna M Barch, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Despite decades of neuroimaging research, how white matter develops along the length of major tracts in humans remains unknown. Here, we identify fundamental patterns of white matter maturation by examining developmental variation along major, long-range cortico-cortical tracts in youth ages 5-23 years using diffusion MRI from three large-scale, cross-sectional datasets (total N = 2716). Across datasets, we delineate two replicable axes of human white matter development. First, we find a deep-to-superficial axis, in which superficial tract regions near the cortical surface exhibit greater age-related change than deep tract regions. Second, we demonstrate that the development of superficial tract regions aligns …
