Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) occurs in 30% of premature neonates and is associated with adverse outcomes that may be mitigated with early detection. Diagnosis of AKI relies on serum creatinine (SCr) which has several limitations, including lack of sensitivity and specificity. There are limited data on the utility of alternative urine biomarkers to predict AKI in neonates born at < 25 weeks' gestation.
Methods: Urine was collected from neonates born at < 25 weeks' gestation during the first postnatal week. Two urine AKI biomarkers, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) were measured. Study participants were prospectively followed to determine development of AKI, defined by the neonatal modified Kidney Disease-Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria, during the first postnatal week. The association of NGAL and EGF with AKI was analyzed using mixed-effect linear regression models adjusting for gestational age at birth.
Results: A total of 26 neonates were enrolled in this study. After adjusting for gestational age at birth, the mean difference in log-transformed biomarkers at three time points for urine NGAL and …

Background: Persistent instability and altered scapular mechanics after acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) reconstruction may stem from inadequate replication of native coracoclavicular (CC) ligament function. However, in vivo data on postoperative CC ligament behavior during dynamic shoulder motion remain lacking.
Purpose: To assess in vivo functional distance and timing characteristics of the conoid and trapezoid ligaments during active shoulder elevation after ACJ reconstruction, using dynamic stereo x-ray (DSX) imaging and patient-specific 3-dimensional (3D) models.
Study design: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3.
Methods: Twelve participants (10 men and 2 women, mean age 39 ± 10 years, mean body mass 92 ± 17 …
Right Ventricular Thrombus Presenting With Right Ventricular Failure In Septic Shock: A Case Report., Micah Harris
Right Ventricular Thrombus Presenting With Right Ventricular Failure In Septic Shock: A Case Report., Micah Harris
Heart and Vascular Articles
We present a case report of refractory multifactorial shock initially managed as septic shock, requiring multidisciplinary collaboration when the diagnostic pathway was limited by acute kidney injury; the primary learning objective is to highlight clinical decision-making in shock when standard contrast imaging is contraindicated. Echocardiography revealed right ventricular failure with right ventricular thrombus, and pulmonary embolism was strongly suspected but could not be confirmed due to the inability to obtain contrast imaging. Persistent shock prompted a transition from a septic shock-directed strategy to cardiogenic and obstructive shock management. The patient was treated with anticoagulation but was not a candidate for …

Medical aid in dying (MAiD) is a practice in which a healthcare professional provides assistance to a terminally ill patient seeking to end their life. To assess how academic discourse may shape public opinion and policy in the United States, we conducted a narrative review of the literature published between 2020 and 2024. Articles were categorized as supportive, opposing, or neutral, and patterns were examined across authorship, disciplinary focus, and target populations. Our findings reveal that most recent publications adopt supportive or neutral stances toward MAiD, with a slight increase in opposition beginning in 2022. Authorship discipline strongly influenced position, …

C1INH (C1-inhibitor) is a multifunctional SERPIN (serine protease inhibitor) that functions as a major negative regulator of the complement, coagulation, and kallikrein-kinin systems. C1INH products were originally developed for the treatment of hereditary angioedema associated with C1INH deficiency. A growing body of literature indicates that C1INH products may find utility in the management of several other disease states. In this review, we detail the key biological activities of C1INH and consider the pathophysiological role of C1INH targets in many conditions. The therapeutic potential of exogenous C1INH is highlighted in the settings of thromboembolism, ischemia-reperfusion injury, sepsis, transplantation, and coronavirus disease …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
In cloud-Internet of Things (IoT) healthcare systems, private medical data leakage is a serious concern as the cloud server is not fully trusted. Dynamic searchable symmetric encryption (DSSE), with necessary forward and backward privacy security properties, enables doctors to retrieve ciphertexts while guaranteeing data privacy. However, existing forward and backward private DSSE schemes are not well-suited for cloud-IoT healthcare systems with attribute-value type databases. To this end, we propose an efficient privacy-preserving conjunctive searchable encryption scheme for cloud-IoT healthcare systems, called PC-SE. It is the first conjunctive DSSE scheme designed for attribute-value type databases. Specifically, we design flexible search capabilities …

Freight transportation within the hub-assisted systems enhances economies of scale for carriers by consolidating logistics operations through central hubs, thereby increasing efficiency and reducing costs. Optimally designing such transportation systems creates competitive advantages for carriers, enabling them to reduce shipping prices and, consequently, capture a larger share of the market from shippers’ demand. This research addresses the joint optimization of intermodal transportation hub network design and pricing decisions under price-dependent and uncertain demand, with the objective of maximizing carrier's profit. Since the uncertain shipping demand follows a nonlinear relation with price, the carrier not only optimizes shipping network design but …

The growing global energy demand highlights the need for renewable sources like solar energy as a key component of sustainable systems. This study focuses on developing two hybrid nanofluids, TiNML125 and MXML125, for optimizing solar energy harvesting. These nanofluids were synthesized via a solvothermal process, combining NH₂-MIL-125 with plasmonic nanoparticles, titanium nitride (TiN) and MXene (MX). Their thermal conductivity, stability, optical properties, and photothermal efficiency were analyzed. Results showed both nanofluids significantly outperformed single-component ML125, with TiNML125 improving absorption by 40 % and enhancing thermal conductivity. MXML125 demonstrated superior long-term stability, with a 25 % lower zeta potential reduction over …

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) offers the potential to remove and safely store significant quantities of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thereby limiting global warming. Conventional geological storage involves injecting CO2, in gaseous or supercritical state, into porous rock reservoirs, relying on geological top seals, capillary forces and/or dissolution in groundwater as the primary “locking-in” processes. An alternative method injects CO2-saturated water into mafic rocks (basalts), chemically inducing in-situ mineralization of CO2 to form solid carbonate minerals. This mechanism offers the lowest risk of carbon returning to the atmosphere. This review synthesizes field and laboratory studies on CO2 mineralization in …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
In this work, the biogenic synthesis route using the leaf extract of Buxus papillosa was employed for the green synthesis of copper oxide (CuO) and nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles (NPs), which were then applied for the catalytic degradation of Alizarin Red S dye (ARS) as a model organic pollutant. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis confirmed spherical and rod-like morphologies for CuO and NiO NPs, respectively, while Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) verified their elemental composition. The average crystallite sizes of CuO and NiO NPs were 6.21 and 5.94 nm, respectively, as determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and their optical band gaps …

An experimental investigation was conducted to evaluate the thermal conductivity (TC) and local heat-transfer coefficients (LHTCs) of nanofluids containing alumina (Al2O3), hematite (Fe2O3), and copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles dispersed in deionized water. A newly developed non-invasive LHTC probe was integrated into the inner wall of the test section to enable direct quantification of interfacial heat-transfer performance. The measurements were conducted under laminar and turbulent flow conditons across Reynolds numbers ranging from 1000 to 10,000. The selected nanoparticles were chosen based on their high intrinsic thermal conductivity, cost effectiveness, and, in the case …

Accurate diagnostics are essential for disease control and elimination efforts. However, access to diagnostics for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) is hindered by limited healthcare infrastructure in many NTD-endemic regions, as well as by reliance on time- and labor-intensive diagnostic methods, such as smear microscopy. New diagnostic tools that are portable, rapid, low-cost, and meet World Health Organization (WHO) sensitivity and specificity targets are urgently needed to accelerate NTD control and elimination programs. Here, we introduce the NTDscope, a portable microscopy platform that enables point-of-care imaging and automated detection of parasites and other pathogens in patient samples. The NTDscope builds on …

Can social norms give rise to distorted information in China? We observe that China’s leading social norm related to alcohol consumption and social drinking enhance earnings management. An analysis of toxic alcohol scandals supports a causal interpretation. Further evidence suggests that the influence of alcohol may come from the negative externality that it creates, which is propagated by corporate leaders and cannot be attenuated by market-oriented institutions. Our results reveal a social norm externality that may have important normative implications.

Research Summary: Are less hierarchical firms organized around stronger cultures instead? We analyze 1.5 million employee reviews on Glassdoor.com from 23,000 US-based firms, alongside data on managerial hierarchy estimated from 42 million professional social media profiles. Our findings confirm a negative association between managerial hierarchy and organizational culture strength. We explore two potential explanations for this association: Functional equivalence between the two, and culture fragmentation caused by managerial hierarchy. Multiple correlational tests show support for functional equivalence as a plausible explanation for the observed negative correlation. Our findings enhance our understanding of the complex relationships between organizational structure and culture …

Many firms are pledging to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across their value chains. However, this requires their suppliers to also adopt more climate-friendly practices for decarbonization. This can involve addressing gaps in not only the suppliers’ ability but also their willingness to adopt such practices, which can be challenging if the suppliers perceive the practices as risky or potentially detrimental to their economic well-being. We examine the effectiveness of relational investments to help mitigate this challenge, arguing that relational investments can serve as a signal of the firm’s commitment towards joint value creation. In a field experiment conducted with supplier …

Transaction cost theory is one of the most commonly used theories to explain how firms govern their economic activities. In the context of cross-border collaborations, transaction cost theory proposes that dissimilarities between the partners’ home countries, which constitute a key source of behavioral uncertainty, affect how collaborations are governed (i.e. whether firms opt for equity joint ventures or non-equity alliances). Although many firms are likely to face more than one dimension of dissimilarity—for example, in terms language and religion, as well as culture—studies in transaction cost theory typically focus on how each source of dissimilarity impacts governance choices independently, in …
