Mycelium-Based Composites Using Minimally Processed Industrial Hemp Biomass: Impact Of Species And Feedstock Ratio On Mechanical Performance Compared To Polystyrene Packaging, Radika Bhaskar, Tanisha Rutledge, Kevin Trangone, Oneal Latimore

School of Design and Engineering Papers

Mycelium-based composites (MBCs\) are formed from lignocellulosic substrates and biopolymer matrices derived from fungal mycelium. Due to their low fossil energy demand and biodegradability, MBCs represent a versatile and sustainable material suitable for a range of applications, with increasing interest focused on packaging. Hemp fibers are an example of natural fibers with great promise as a substrate to improve the mechanical properties of MBCs. However, the separation of bast and hurd fiber requires processing and commercial-scale facilities that are logistically challenging and may be cost-prohibitive. Here, the potential for minimally processed hemp, with no separation of fibers, is evaluated for …

Miracle Temple Apostolic Holiness Church Of Am., Inc. V Mack And Heward Feb 2026

Miracle Temple Apostolic Holiness Church Of Am., Inc. V Mack And Heward

All Decisions

In this holdover proceeding, the landlord sought to evict month-to-month tenants based on a 90-day notice, claiming exemption from the Good Cause Eviction Law (GCEL) under RPL § 214(14) as a religious institution. The tenants moved to dismiss, arguing the landlord failed to state a cause of action. The court interpreted RPL § 214(14) to require current use of the premises by the religious facility, not merely future intent to house missionaries. Finding that the landlord's current use was only for rental purposes and the unit was not tax-exempt or currently affiliated with the church, the court granted the tenants' …

The Business Bankruptcy “Big 3” And The Unanticipated Benefits Of Subchapter V, Marshall V. Ringwood Feb 2026

The Business Bankruptcy “Big 3” And The Unanticipated Benefits Of Subchapter V, Marshall V. Ringwood

BYU Law Review

The liberal bankruptcy venue rules in the United States have their defenders and advocates. Subchapter V of the Bankruptcy Code came into effect in 2020, justified as a bipartisan solution to a longstanding problem in corporate bankruptcy where restructuring under Chapter 11 was prohibitively expensive for small-business debtors. On June 21, 2024, Subchapter V’s extended debt limit of $7,500,000 in liabilities reverted back to a statutorily defined $3,024,725. In addition to the justifications offered by organizations such as the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI) for both Subchapter V, generally, and a permanent increase to its debt limit, I argue that Subchapter …

Competition Law In The Age Of Sustainability: Regulatory Challenges And Strategic Responses, Emrah Kulakli, Serhat Yüksel, Serkan Eti, Hasan Dinçer Feb 2026

Competition Law In The Age Of Sustainability: Regulatory Challenges And Strategic Responses, Emrah Kulakli, Serhat Yüksel, Serkan Eti, Hasan Dinçer

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

The increasing emphasis on sustainability has intensified tensions with competition law, particularly when cooperative initiatives create risks for market competition or consumer welfare. The main challenge is to identify regulatory strategies that balance sustainability objectives with competitive market principles. This requires a systematic assessment of both sustainability benefits and competition related risks. Existing studies largely rely on legal discussions or case-based evaluations and provide limited quantitative guidance for prioritizing regulatory approaches. This study addresses this gap by proposing a structured decision-making framework to reduce conflicts between sustainability goals and competition law. A hybrid model is developed by integrating spherical fuzzy …

Practicing Archival Sustainability Through Degrowth, Hannah Pryor Feb 2026

Practicing Archival Sustainability Through Degrowth, Hannah Pryor

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

As archives continue to face threats from global climate disasters and increased institutional pressure to accomplish more with fewer resources, there is a need to evolve archival practice through a sustainability lens. While archival literature has frequently discussed sustainability practices such as eco-friendly building standards, how to reduce energy consumption, and other green initiatives, less focus has been placed on the underlying structures of unsustainability. This article proposes degrowth as one framework for considering archival sustainability. Degrowth is an ecological, economic, and political theory that advocates for the deliberate reduction of activities that rely on non-renewable resources. This article draws …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

KBG syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterised by developmental delay, characteristic facial features, macrodontia and skeletal anomalies, caused by mutations in the ANKRD11 gene. We report a 5.5-year-old Moroccan boy who presented in 2022 to a tertiary military teaching hospital in Rabat, Morocco, with psychomotor delay, autistic traits, epilepsy, bilateral hearing loss with chronic otomastoiditis and radiologically-detected macrodontia before clinical eruption, in whom artificial intelligence-assisted facial phenotyping suggested the diagnosis, subsequently confirmed by identification of a novel nonsense mutation (c.1977C>G; p.Tyr659Ter). Multidisciplinary management including antiepileptic therapy, speech therapy and audiological follow-up resulted in satisfactory seizure control and …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Hippocampal subfields differentially develop and age, and they vary in vulnerability to neurodegenerative diseases. Innovation in high-resolution imaging has accelerated clinical research on human hippocampal subfields, but substantial differences in segmentation protocols impede comparisons of results across laboratories. The Hippocampal Subfields Group (HSG) is an international organization seeking to address this issue by developing a histologically valid, reliable, and freely available segmentation protocol for high-resolution T2-weighted 3 T MRI (http://www.hippocampalsubfields.com). Here, we report the first portion of the protocol focused on subfields in the hippocampal body; protocols for the head and tail are in development. The body protocol includes definitions …

Statistically Consistent And Novel Image Registration Methods For Various Transformations In Presence Of Zooming, Sujay Das Feb 2026

Statistically Consistent And Novel Image Registration Methods For Various Transformations In Presence Of Zooming, Sujay Das

Doctoral Theses

In image processing literature, image registration is the process of spatially matching two or more images of the same scene or object obtained at various times, from different perspectives, or by separate sensors in order to simplify comparison, fusion, or analysis. Its purpose is to identify the spatial transformation that minimizes the differences between related characteristics or intensities in the reference and moved images. Image registration techniques find a wide range of applications in several imaging fields, namely, medical imaging, satellite imaging, fingerprint matching, remote sensing, and image comparison, to name a few. The growing popularity of this imaging field …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Calcium oxalate stones comprise greater than 70% of all kidney stones. In the current conceptual framework, the initial stone nidus is thought to include the aggregation of inorganic crystallites, the formation of which is favored by elevated concentrations of dissolved constituents. Here, we show that this highly prevalent stone type comprises a form of organic-inorganic polycrystalline biocomposite with integrated bacterial biofilms. Evidence from electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy reveal the unanticipated internal structure of kidney stones from human patients, where bacterial biofilms are intercalated between polycrystalline mineral layers, even in stones identified as "noninfectious" clinically, including those in patients without …

Lichen Planus Pigmentosus Localized To The Glans Penis: A Rare Presentation Treated With Ruxolitinib, Sanjidah Ira, Hannah Kopelman, William Steffes

GME Publications

Lichen planus pigmentosus (LPP) is a rare variant of lichen planus characterized by macules of black or dark brown color distributed in the sun-exposed areas of the body. It is common among individuals with darker skin, with cases reported in the Middle East, Korea, Japan, and Latin America. Genital involvement is rare, with no reported cases describing isolated penile disease. Management of genital LPP is also challenging due to the sensitive nature of the skin and the associated risks of long-term topical corticosteroid use. We report a case of a 24-year-old male presenting with asymptomatic hyperpigmented lesions localized to the …

Chronic Facial Abscess Mimicking Cervicofacial Actinomyces From Dermal Filler Migration: Case Report, Monika Ziogaite, Sarah Mannlein, Nicole Bender, Scott J. Mahlberg

Student Publications

Dermal fillers are commonly used for facial augmentation, but delayed complications such as granulomatous inflammation and filler migration can mimic chronic bacterial infections, such as cervicofacial actinomycosis, and lead to diagnostic misdirection. We present the case of a woman aged 56 years with a chronic, draining abscess on the right cheek that persisted for 3 years and was initially suspected to represent cervicofacial actinomycosis. Tissue cultures were negative, and histopathologic analysis following excisional biopsy revealed polymethyl methacrylate microspheres and hyaluronic acid surrounded by granulomatous inflammation and reactive lymphoid aggregates, consistent with a foreign body reaction to dermal filler. The patient …

Pneumonia is one of the leading causes of hospitalization in the United States, resulting in many hospitalizations and deaths per year. Diabetes is an often-concurrent diagnosis that affects a large population. There is little research regarding the relationship between diabetes and the length of stay for patients hospitalized with pneumonia. This retrospective study aims to analyze whether the presence of diabetes mellitus in patients diagnosed with pneumonia increases the length of stay. Electronic medical records (EMR) from Freeman Health System in Southwest Missouri were utilized to analyze this relationship. Results of this study demonstrated that, in patients diagnosed with diabetes …

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Healthcare-associated ventriculitis and meningitis (HCAVM) is associated with high morbidity and mortality, but rapid diagnostic tests intended to cover microorganisms that typically cause HCAVM are not commercially available. We sought to evaluate the etiology of HCAVM compared to community-acquired meningitis/encephalitis (CAME) at our healthcare system, and to study the utility of repurposing a multiplex molecular panel intended for positive blood cultures for HCAVM cases. Our epidemiologic review demonstrated that HCAVM cases were primarily caused by bacteria and fungi also associated with bloodstream infections, in contrast with CAME cases, which were primarily caused by herpesviruses and Cryptococcus. Eighty-two cerebrospinal fluid …
