Primary Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis: Natural History, Pathogenesis, And Treatment, Edward J. Filippone, John L. Farber Feb 2026

Primary Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis: Natural History, Pathogenesis, And Treatment, Edward J. Filippone, John L. Farber

Division of Nephrology Faculty Papers

Primary membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) is an ultrarare disease characterized by immunofluorescence microscopy as either immune-complex mediated (IC-MPGN) or C3 glomerulopathy (C3), the latter subdivided by electron microscopy to C3 glomerulonephritis (C3GN) and dense deposit disease (DDD). Both IC-MPGN and C3G typically have obvious C3 staining differentiating them from other causes of MPGN histology. Secondary causes must be excluded, including infections, autoimmune disease, and neoplasia. Clinical presentations are variable, including urinary sediment abnormalities, nephrotic syndrome, or a rapidly progressive course. The prognosis is unfavorable with about 50% reaching kidney failure by 10 years. Recurrence following transplantation is frequent, and allograft survival …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Accurate preoperative diagnosis of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is difficult, complicating distinction between septic and aseptic failures. This study assessed the value of common serum biomarkers and three calculated ratios-albumin-globulin ratio (AGR), C-reactive protein-albumin ratio (CAR), and C-reactive protein-AGR ratio (CAGR)-in diagnosing PJI after primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). We retrospectively reviewed patients undergoing revision THA for PJI or aseptic failure from 2011 to 2021 at a single institution. Inclusion required reported serum white blood cell count (WBC), C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), albumin (Alb), and total protein (TP). Diagnostic performance was evaluated using areas under the curve …

Adversaries And Experts: Legal Tradition Versus Empirical Science, André M. Peñalver Feb 2026

Adversaries And Experts: Legal Tradition Versus Empirical Science, André M. Peñalver

Seattle University Law Review Online

The modern courtroom can become a battleground between two epistemologies: the adversarial logic of law and the empirical rigor of science. Using a case involving a neuropsychological exam under Washington Civil Rule 35, this Article explores the tension between these traditions. While medicine embraced the Scientific Revolution, law remains tethered to its medieval Scholastic roots. The Article argues for humility and integration of evidence-based reasoning within the adversarial process.

Investigating The Impact Of Childhood Trauma On Marital Satisfaction: A Moderated Multiple Regression Analysis, Clarence Duff

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Childhood trauma and its negative impact on adult life is well documented as a growing global concern and has been a focus of research for many years. A growing body of literature has demonstrated its impact on psychological and physical health, as well as emotional and social well-being. However, research on how it affects marital satisfaction and variables that moderate this relationship is unexplored. Using the Adverse Childhood Experience questionnaire (ACE) and Pearson correlation, the study examined the relationship between childhood trauma and marital satisfaction. Furthermore, a linear multiple linear regression was used to examine whether Experience in Close Relationship …

Organizational Crisis Management: Addressing Professional Misconduct In Modern Workplaces, Christina Nizamidou, Martin Sposato Feb 2026

Organizational Crisis Management: Addressing Professional Misconduct In Modern Workplaces, Christina Nizamidou, Martin Sposato

All Works

Since the 1970s, governments and organizations across the globe have achieved tremendous progress against sexual harassment (SH), especially in the workplace. However, the number of organizations suffering from this crisis has increased significantly over the past few years. Based on an overview of SH crises -that have received extra media coverage since 2014- this paper explores whether organizations managed to learn from these crises. Compared to other crises, SH scandals produce a higher magnitude of provocation within society. An individual's act, based on their perception that the influence of power can be exchanged for sexual favors, destroys a business's global …

Community Engagement And Equity-Oriented Researchare Prerequisites For Designing Inclusive Oral Healthservices For People Experiencing Homelessness, Martha Paisi, Andrea Rodriguez, Lyndsey Withers Feb 2026

Community Engagement And Equity-Oriented Researchare Prerequisites For Designing Inclusive Oral Healthservices For People Experiencing Homelessness, Martha Paisi, Andrea Rodriguez, Lyndsey Withers

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Oral health is a vital aspect of overall health and wellbeing, yet individuals experiencing homelessness often bear a disproportionate burden of poor oral health and its consequences. This paper explores how community engagement and equity-oriented research can be powerful and complementary tools to inform and enhance evidence-based service design for these patients. We present illustrative examples from both the United Kingdom and international contexts. Community engagement captures a genuine, patient-centred understanding of current realities, while research builds on this foundation to identify and address priority needs. This targeted approach increases the likelihood of impactful interventions that move from ‘what is' …

Security Evaluation Of Post-Quantum Ml-Dsa Implementations Against Software-Induced Fault Attacks, Alexis Korensky Feb 2026

Security Evaluation Of Post-Quantum Ml-Dsa Implementations Against Software-Induced Fault Attacks, Alexis Korensky

Theses

Quantum computing is a form of computation that uses the principles of quantum mechanics to perform mathematical computations at a faster rate than classical computers. Although quantum computing is currently still in its early stages, if a general-purpose, large-scale, and fault-tolerant quantum computer were to be built, it would jeopardize the security of modern public-key cryptosystems. If these cryptosystems were broken, secure connections could not be authenticated, enabling Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attacks, and digital messages could not be signed. All data sent over secured HTTPS and/or TLS connections would be vulnerable and potentially malicious since its origin and integrity could not …

Association Of Germline Variants With Kras-Mutation Status In Colorectal Cancer, Nijole Pollock Tjader, Yin Cao, Et Al. Feb 2026

Association Of Germline Variants With Kras-Mutation Status In Colorectal Cancer, Nijole Pollock Tjader, Yin Cao, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Somatic mutations in KRAS are a common driver of colorectal cancer (CRC) and present at different frequencies by race, sex, tumor site, ethnicity, and genetic similarity. Inherited germline variants may influence tumor somatic mutation frequency by altering mutation or DNA repair processes or altering cellular, immunological and/or microenvironmental responses after a mutation. We hypothesized that the germline genetic background modifies somatic KRAS mutation frequency in CRC. To test this, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in 7071 individuals with CRC, using KRAS mutation status as the phenotype. Single-nucleotide variants were chosen for validation analyses based on P values from …

Oxaliplatin-Induced Cardiotoxicity In Mice Is Connected To The Changes In Energy Metabolism In The Heart Tissue, Junwei Du, Leland C Sudlow, Kiana Shahverdi, Haiying Zhou, Megan S Michie, Thomas H Schindler, Joshua D Mitchell, Shamim Mollah, Mikhail Y Berezin

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Oxaliplatin is a platinum-based alkylating chemotherapeutic agent used for cancer treatment. At high cumulative dosage, the negative effect of oxaliplatin on the heart becomes evident and is linked to a growing number of clinical reports. The aim of this study was to determine how chronic oxaliplatin treatment causes the changes in energy-related metabolic activity in the heart that leads to cardiotoxicity and heart damage in mice. C57BL/6 male mice were treated with a human equivalent dosage of intraperitoneal oxaliplatin (0 and 10 mg/kg) once a week for eight weeks. During the treatment, mice were followed with ECG, histology and RNA …

Assessing The Threat Of Southern Pine Beetle To Pitch Pine In Acadia National Park, Caroline R. Kanaskie, Mark J. Ducey, Jeff R. Garnas

Faculty Publications

Many of the mountain summits of Acadia National Park (ACAD) are dominated by Pinus rigida (Pitch Pine). The ACAD Pitch Pine population is particularly valuable due to its position at the northernmost edge of the species’ range, its association with unique animal and plant communities, and its contribution to the aesthetics of the park. Pitch Pine is host to Dendroctonus frontalis (Southern Pine Beetle [SPB]). As the name suggests, SPB is native to the southeastern US, and can kill large numbers of healthy pines via mass-attack. With warming winters, SPB can establish and persist further north than ever before, presenting …

Proportionality And Theft, Christopher T. Wonnell Feb 2026

Proportionality And Theft, Christopher T. Wonnell

San Diego Law Review

Criminal law can serve a variety of utilitarian purposes including deterrence, incapacitation, and rehabilitation.  Nevertheless, there is broad agreement among criminal justice scholars that the pursuit of these purposes should be constrained by a requirement that punishment not be disproportionately severe relative to the offense charged.  The proportionality constraint is likely to be especially important when considering the less heinous predatory crimes such as nonviolent thefts.  Recent years have seen experiments by progressive prosecutors who deemphasize theft offenses as well as statutory schemes that treat many thefts as misdemeanors.  With some empirical support, critics charge that these experiments have increased …

Passive Choice And The Fourth Amendment, A. Shea Daley Burdette Feb 2026

Passive Choice And The Fourth Amendment, A. Shea Daley Burdette

San Diego Law Review

Does the Constitution allow waiver of Fourth Amendment rights through passive choice? What about through the choice of others? Based on current Supreme Court precedent, the answer is frustratingly unclear. For example, a copious amount of information is constantly disclosed to phone companies. The Supreme Court has recognized that having a cell phone is an inescapable choice today and that disclosing one’s location information to the cell phone company is automatic in nature. Each fact is considered relevant to determining whether an individual has a reasonable expectation of privacy in the information disclosed to third parties—which then affects whether the …

Navigating Risk Factor Disclosures: A New, Outlier Ninth Circuit Approach Remains After The Supreme Court Declines To Resolve A Circuit Split In In Re Facebook Securities Litigation, Jessica K. Kocinski

San Diego Law Review

This Casenote examines the implications of the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Amalgamated Bank to dismiss Facebook’s writ of certiorari as improvidently granted, thereby allowing the shareholders’ securities fraud class action lawsuit to proceed in the lower courts.  Specifically, it focuses on whether Facebook shareholders adequately alleged securities fraud under Section 10(b) and Rule 10b-5 as to challenged risk factor disclosures in Facebook’s 2016 Form 10-K under the PSLRA’s heightened pleading standard.  Part II of this Casenote provides background on the Cambridge Analytica data breach, which Facebook allegedly failed to disclose in its 2016 Form 10-K risk factor disclosures.  Part …

On The Nation’S Doorstep: How The Ninth Circuit Ruled Against Metering And Redefined The Border For Asylum Seekers, Samantha Fakhimi

San Diego Law Review

This Note examines the Ninth Circuit’s decision in Al Otro Lado and its implications on evolving federal immigration policies.  Part II analyzes the history of metering in the United States, including prior judicial treatment of the practice and its unlawfulness as determined by the district court’s prior holding.  Part III summarizes the Ninth Circuit’s majority opinion in Al Otro Lado, while setting forth the case’s legal implications within the larger federal landscape, including the broadened scope of government obligation to asylum seekers.  Part IV proposes next steps that could be taken by the legislature in response to practical constraints …

Dov Land Usa, Llc V. Hickman Feb 2026

Dov Land Usa, Llc V. Hickman

All Decisions

Landlord commenced a squatter summary proceeding against tenant to recover possession of storage space located off a public hallway in a building where tenant lives in a rent-stabilized apartment. The Civil Court awarded possession to the landlord. On appeal, the Appellate Term reversed, finding that the landlord's implicit acquiescence to the tenant's use of the storage space for at least 10 years, when the apartment was covered under the Loft Law, made the provision of the storage space a required service under rent stabilization. The court affirmed the dismissal of the tenant's counterclaim for an initial rent-stabilized lease due to …
