Student Research Symposium (SRS)

In the past, NASA has developed various tool restraint systems to prevent equipment loss during extravehicular activities. However, many rely on active locking mechanisms, which can get complex in microgravity. This project details the design, development, and evaluation of a Passive Capture Tool Dock (PCTD) featuring a push-to-lock clip mechanism. This prototype was designed for microgravity environments for NASA’s 2026 Micro-g NExT Challenge 2. The device is designed to passively secure Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA) tools to the astronauts' toolbelt for spacewalk use. To engage, tools are pushed through an elastic U-clip, which locks it in place. To disengage, the …

Data-Driven Metrics For Approach Stability Assessment In Flight Training Using Ads-B Data, Taeyun Yoo Feb 2026

Data-Driven Metrics For Approach Stability Assessment In Flight Training Using Ads-B Data, Taeyun Yoo

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Approach stability is a critical factor in ensuring safe flight operations, especially in-flight training environments characterized by varying pilot experience levels. Although flight data recorders (FDRs) offer comprehensive performance data for evaluating approach stability, these devices are typically absent from training aircraft. Consequently, assessments in flight training settings depend predominantly on instructor expertise and subjective evaluation, which restricts the potential for quantitative post-flight analysis. This study investigates the application of open-source Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) data to identify and evaluate approach stability within flight training operations. This research develops and tests a metric-based framework for classifying approach stability using publicly …

Comparing Pulsation Timing (O-C) Method And Frequency Modulation (Fm) Method: Resolving Orbital Parameters Of Binary Star Systems, Julia Clark Feb 2026

Comparing Pulsation Timing (O-C) Method And Frequency Modulation (Fm) Method: Resolving Orbital Parameters Of Binary Star Systems, Julia Clark

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The Frequency Modulation (FM) Method, first proposed by Shibahashi et al. (2012) and expanded upon in 2015, provides a way to detect binary motion in pulsating stars using only photometric data. Orbital motion produces frequency shifts that appear as multiplets in the Fourier transform of the light curve, with spacing equal to the orbital frequency from the central peak. The relative amplitudes and phases of these peaks can be used to derive orbital parameters—offering a purely photometric alternative to spectroscopic radial velocity (RV) measurements. This project applies the FM method to confirm potential subdwarf B (sdB) companions that have been …

Injuries And Accidents On Airport Ramps, Kavya Banarjee Feb 2026

Injuries And Accidents On Airport Ramps, Kavya Banarjee

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Media coverage of aircraft incidents/accidents often triggers public scrutiny and heightened anxiety. But behind that are injuries and fatalities caused on the airport ramps; incidents like these are rarely covered by the media but pose just as much of a safety concern as an aircraft incident. This paper aims to inform aviation industry professionals and airline executives about the causes of incidents and accidents on the airport ramp; it also covers the importance of finding and implementing solutions for safety. The methodology for this paper focuses on research and analysis of publicly available information. Relevant data and perspectives were gathered …

The Impact Of Ryanair Work Environment On Employee Satisfaction, Kailey Turpening, Kaitlynn Baker, Sayvien Rivera, Xiomy Lopez, Tiera White

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

In 2022, Ryanair received both positive and negative evaluations regarding employment conditions. Favorable assessments highlighted competitive compensation, comprehensive training programs, and consistent scheduling. In contrast, employees reported salary reductions and raised concerns about management practices and organizational culture. As a result of these adverse conditions, a significant number of employees participated in strikes against the airline. Ryanair depends on its flight and cabin crew to deliver high-quality customer service. Employee job satisfaction directly influences performance, customer interactions, and brand representation. The work environment significantly affects service delivery; consequently, strikes resulting from staff dissatisfaction led to operational disruptions and staff shortages. …

A Comparative Study Of Gender Equity Policies Between A U.S. Legacy Airline And A Low-Cost Carrier, Rachel Groce, Oona Jokinen, Alma Olesen, Kristina Tynon, Robbie Mcgrayne Feb 2026

A Comparative Study Of Gender Equity Policies Between A U.S. Legacy Airline And A Low-Cost Carrier, Rachel Groce, Oona Jokinen, Alma Olesen, Kristina Tynon, Robbie Mcgrayne

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The purpose of this poster is to critically examine the effectiveness of airline efforts toward gender equity by comparing a low-cost carrier with one of the U.S. “Big Four” legacy airlines. Through an analysis of policies, initiatives, and organizational resources, this research identifies how each airline fosters gender equity, highlights gaps in current practices, and proposes policy recommendations to address areas where progress remains limited. This topic is particularly important given the aviation industry’s historical underrepresentation of women and the broader need for workplace inclusivity. Although the number of women entering aviation has increased gradually, a significant gender imbalance persists …

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The 2022-23 crisis at Southwest Airlines was marked by widespread flight cancellations, scheduling problems, and communication breakdown. It was one of the most significant disruptions in recent U.S. aviation. The crisis exposed major structural and strategic problems in the airline’s business model, and raised questions about the strength of its low-cost, high-efficiency approach. This event matters to both industry professionals and researchers interested in how corporate strategy, organizational systems, and frontline employees interact. Although many have commented on the crisis, there remains a key research gap in understanding how executive decisions on technology, culture, and cost management affect frontline operations …

Democratizing Grid Simulation With Open Source Power System Tools, Rogelio Gracia Otalvaro Feb 2026

Democratizing Grid Simulation With Open Source Power System Tools, Rogelio Gracia Otalvaro

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Modern infrastructure systems are becoming increasingly complex due to their nonlinear behaviors and dense interconnections. Power systems, in particular, have evolved into highly coupled cyber-physical networks integrating renewable energy sources, distributed generation, and advanced automation. While these technologies promise cleaner and more efficient operation, they also introduce fragility and new modes of failure. Events such as the large-scale blackout in Spain (April 2025) and the Heathrow power disruption (2025) illustrate how local perturbations can cascade into systemic breakdowns. Traditionally, system behavior was governed by centralized operators who had exclusive access to the analytical tools and data required to understand grid …
