Assessing Ear Pinna Repair In The Mrl/Mpj Mouse Strain, Fatemeh Safaee Jan 2022

Assessing Ear Pinna Repair In The Mrl/Mpj Mouse Strain, Fatemeh Safaee

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

The outcome of tissue repair varies across species. Vertebrates such as salamanders have the ability to not only heal scar-free but also completely regenerate lost appendages. In contrast, most mammals heal their wounds with fibrotic scarring. Understanding the key drivers of these divergent injury responses remains a major unanswered question in animal biology. Previous work with the Murphy’s Roth Large (MRL/MpJ) inbred mouse strain suggested they have the ability to rapidly close small (2mm) ear holes. While this ability was originally published as an example of regeneration, subsequent work by other groups suggested that it might represent something more akin …

A Personal Essay: The Parthenon Marbles And The British Museum's Fairy Tale, David Rudenstine Jan 2022

A Personal Essay: The Parthenon Marbles And The British Museum's Fairy Tale, David Rudenstine

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The British Museum's retention of the Parthenon Marbles is justified by a narrative that the author describes as a "fairy tale," unsupported by historical evidence. The museum claims that Lord Elgin obtained prior written permission from Ottoman authorities to remove the sculptures, but the author argues that this claim is false and contradicted by available evidence. The article contends that the museum's narrative lacks an evidentiary foundation, amounting to deliberate misrepresentation, and calls for the return of the marbles to Athens.

The Parthenon Marbles Case: Background And The Arguments Of Greece And The Uk, Irini Stamatoudi Jan 2022

The Parthenon Marbles Case: Background And The Arguments Of Greece And The Uk, Irini Stamatoudi

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The article examines the longstanding dispute over the Parthenon Marbles, focusing on the legal, ethical, and policy arguments between Greece and the UK. It critiques the UK's reliance on the "Universal Museum" theory and legal constraints, arguing that the Marbles' return to Greece is justified on ethical and cultural grounds. The article emphasizes the importance of reuniting the Marbles in their original context and challenges the UK's position as outdated and contrary to modern principles of cultural heritage law.

Section 230 And The Right To Remove Vaccine Misinformation, Michael A. Cheah Jan 2022

Section 230 And The Right To Remove Vaccine Misinformation, Michael A. Cheah

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

Recognizing its clear propensity to cause serious public harm, many online platforms have restricted vaccine misinformation. This essay argues that these platforms are protected from liability when they remove such content under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. The essay conducts a textual and policy-based analysis of the "publisher" immunity conferred by Section 230(c) (1) and the immunity for restricting objectionable materials under Section 230(c)(2) and concludes that both protect the removal of vaccine misinformation. The essay further argues that repealing Section 230 will not encourage platforms to combat vaccine misinformation as some policymakers have suggested. That is because …

Crying Cda Immunity: Tech Companies' Knee-Jerk Defense To Child Sexual Exploitation & Product Liability Claims, Carrie Goldberg, Naomi Leeds Jan 2022

Crying Cda Immunity: Tech Companies' Knee-Jerk Defense To Child Sexual Exploitation & Product Liability Claims, Carrie Goldberg, Naomi Leeds

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The article argues that Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act is being misapplied by tech companies like Omegle to avoid liability in cases involving child sexual exploitation and product liability. It contends that Section 230 immunity should not shield companies when claims pertain to product design flaws and trafficking, emphasizing the need for courts to recognize the distinction between content moderation and product-related harms.

A Multidisciplinary Characterization Of The Enzymology And Biology Of Reversible Glucan Phosphorylation In Toxoplasma Gondii , Robert Murphy Jan 2022

A Multidisciplinary Characterization Of The Enzymology And Biology Of Reversible Glucan Phosphorylation In Toxoplasma Gondii , Robert Murphy

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Toxoplasma gondii is an opportunistic, protozoan parasite of all warm-blooded animals, infecting roughly one-third of humans worldwide. Humans acquire infections by consuming T. gondii tissue cysts in undercooked meat or from oocysts shed in cat feces. Encysted parasites convert into rapidly growing tachyzoites that disseminate throughout the body, defining the acute phase of infection. Under host immune pressure, tachyzoites convert into bradyzoites that populate tissue cysts found in CNS or muscle tissue and persist for the lifetime of the host, defining the chronic phase of infection. Tissue cysts are responsible for transmission via carnivory, but also possess the ability to …

Remote Sensing For Quantifying C3 And C4 Grass Ratios In Pastures, Jordyn Alyssa Bush

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

The following studies investigate the accuracy and practicality of exploiting the color dichotomy present between C3 and C4 grass species to estimate their respective proportions from drone or camera captured imagery. Understanding the proportions of C3 and C4 grasses in pastures is vital to sound decision making for livestock production. The ability to monitor these proportions remotely will also allow for large scale monitoring as well as detection of changes in botanical composition over time and in response to weather events, management, or climate change. A free green canopy cover (GCC) analyzing software, Canopeo, was used …

Copyright Neutrality? Lessons From Mein Kampf, Michal Shur-Ofry, Noy Lion Jan 2022

Copyright Neutrality? Lessons From Mein Kampf, Michal Shur-Ofry, Noy Lion

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

This Article explores the copyright story of Hitler's Mein Kampf over the past century and uses this case study to shed new light on one of copyright's foundational doctrines: the principle of copyright neutrality. Relying on primary archival materials from German archives, combined with legal proceedings from the 1930s onwards, secondary historical sources, and in-depth interviews, we trace the copyright trails of Mein Kampf across several jurisdictions and periods of time. This intricate inquiry unravels the surprisingly central role that copyright played in spreading the Nazi ideology and illuminates a structural imbalance within the neutrality principle, which may legitimize and …

Undoing The Dyad: Re-Examining Mentorship With A Feminist Lens, Bailey Wallace, Melissa Dewitt, Elia Trucks

University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship

Academic libraries consistently use mentoring programs to integrate new employees by sharing organizational knowledge and providing support to advance in their careers. Traditional models of mentorship are tools that help support existing power structures and keep in power those benefiting from the associated privilege. One way to interrogate traditional mentorship models and their inherent inequities is to apply a feminist lens in examining the expectations and actions of mentors and mentees. This chapter discusses how the traditional dyad mentoring model does not support everyone equally and explores alternative, inclusive models of mentorship, such as group mentoring and peer mentoring. We …

A recent project at the University of Denver Libraries used handwritten text recognition (HTR) software to create transcriptions of records from the Jewish Consumptives’ Relief Society (JCRS), a tuberculosis sanatorium located in Denver, Colorado from 1904 to 1954. Among a great many other potential uses, these type- and hand-written records give insight into the human experience of disease and epidemic, its treatment, its effect on cultures, and of Jewish immigration to and early life in the American West. Our intent is to provide these transcripts as data so the text may be computationally analyzed, pursuant to a larger effort in …

Monastic Landscapes: A New Approach To Columbanian Monasticism, Albrecht Diem Jan 2022

Monastic Landscapes: A New Approach To Columbanian Monasticism, Albrecht Diem

History - All Scholarship

T his contribution proposes different notions of "monastic landscapes" (geographic, political, textual, economic, spiritual) and discusses whether applying them to the monastic movement allegedly initiated by Columbanus may help us to refine or deconstruct the concept of "Columbanian monasticism." Comparing evidence on monastic life in Gregory of Tours' hagiographic and historiographic works with the depiction of monastic life in Jonas of Bobbio's Vita Columbani shows that we can indeed identify a shift from a "landscape with monasteries" in sixth-century Merovingian Francia to a politically integrated "monastic landscape" in the seventh century. However, this does not mean that the fundamental shift …

The Case For Alternate Media Requirement Expressions In Systems Engineering, Jason Kolligs Jan 2022

The Case For Alternate Media Requirement Expressions In Systems Engineering, Jason Kolligs

Dissertations

“Requirements” are often presented as a necessary, if not mandated, component or tool of the systems engineering process. Despite their place in engineering, low quality requirements are the first potential mistakes of an engineering project and their effects are potentially felt downstream in the form of increased costs and schedule overruns. Innovations to improve requirements engineering have historically omitted the requirement media. This research provides the rationale and process heuristics to include alternate media requirement expressions within systems engineering which shifts accountability to higher context requirement expressions that may require less cognitive load while decreasing effort and schedule thereby potentially …

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

While recent rates of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening have improved in Appalachian Kentucky due to public health efforts, they remain lower compared to both KY as a whole, and the USA. Suboptimal screening rates represent a missed opportunity to engage in early detection and prevention. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact that lack of knowledge has on psychological barriers (e.g., fear and embarrassment) to CRC screening as well as the potential effect of a psychosocial intervention to reduce these barriers. Participants were recruited through faith-based organizations and other community sites. After randomizing participants to either an …

The Wheel Of Oppression: Rolling Towards Substance Use In Central Appalachia, Sydney Cox Jan 2022

The Wheel Of Oppression: Rolling Towards Substance Use In Central Appalachia, Sydney Cox

DSW Capstone Projects

For nearly 100 years, Central Appalachia has been characterized by some of the highest poverty rates in the nation. Not coincidentally, the region has also been characterized by some of the highest rates of substance use. Despite decades of funding and support, Central Appalachia continues to foster a symbiotic relationship between poverty and substance use. The purpose of this project was to explore the missing link that ties the two poor determinants of health together and to provide a name to a phenomenon otherwise omitted from social work and policy making practice within Central Appalachia.

The first product of this …

Child Welfare: Workforce Retention, Competence, And The Connection To Social Work Education, Brittany Stanley Jan 2022

Child Welfare: Workforce Retention, Competence, And The Connection To Social Work Education, Brittany Stanley

DSW Capstone Projects

While there are many avenues to discuss and explore, the key area of interest for the Capstone Project is that of retention of a competent frontline workforce. Each state has their own set of guidelines for hiring frontline workers which allows for variety in the educational backgrounds of the investigative and ongoing workers. This can become problematic when the educational background may not be the most suited for the work and challenges faced by child welfare workers.

During the development of the Capstone Project, one could not help but wonder that if workers were adequately prepared for the demands of …

The Golden Age Of The Economics Of Bureaucracy, Chang-Yeh (Michael) Wu Jan 2022

The Golden Age Of The Economics Of Bureaucracy, Chang-Yeh (Michael) Wu

Theses

The economics of bureaucracy (EOB) is a field of research that emerged from the public choice movement in the mid-1960s through to the early 1970s. It entailed applying traditional economic theories and modelling techniques to study decision-making in non-market hierarchies that are often referred to as bureaucracies. The field was pioneered and codified by Gordon Tullock, Anthony Downs, and William Niskanen in what may be called the ‘golden age’ of EOB. Establishing EOB as a bona fide research domain was a challenging intellectual enterprise due to the absence of a pre-existing conceptual framework to readily model bureaucracies within the economics …

Salome- Femme Fatale, Gaze And Rejection Of The Feminine, Ramya Thiyagarajan Jan 2022

Salome- Femme Fatale, Gaze And Rejection Of The Feminine, Ramya Thiyagarajan

Publications and Research

Salome was an unnamed, minor character in the New Testament of Mark and Matthew, an innocent girl who is presented as a pawn in her mother’s scheme to behead John the Baptist. Over time, Salome developed a life of her own, from being imagined as an acrobat in the Middle Ages, to a virgin beauty in the Renaissance and for Christians a constant example of evil woman. In 1891, Salome was reborn as the erotic femme fatale through the imagination of Oscar Wilde and given an existence on the stage, though the play was banned for years. Only after an …

Development Of Dc Circuit Breakers For Medium-Voltage Electrified Transportation, Trevor Morgan Arvin Jan 2022

Development Of Dc Circuit Breakers For Medium-Voltage Electrified Transportation, Trevor Morgan Arvin

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Medium-voltage DC (MVDC) distribution is an enabling technology for the electrification of transportation such as aircraft and shipboard. One main obstacle for DC distribution is the lack of adequate circuit fault protection. The challenges are due to the rapidly rising fault currents and absence of zero crossings in DC systems compared to AC counterparts. Existing DC breaker solutions lack comprehensive consideration of energy efficiency, power density, fault interruption speed, reliability, and implementation cost.

In this thesis, two circuit topologies of improved DC circuit breakers are developed: the resonant current source based hybrid DC breaker (RCS-HDCB) and the high temperature superconductor …

Models And Optimal Controls For Smart Homes And Their Integration Into The Electric Power Grid, Huangjie Gong Jan 2022

Models And Optimal Controls For Smart Homes And Their Integration Into The Electric Power Grid, Huangjie Gong

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Smart homes can operate as a distributed energy resource (DER), when equipped with controllable high-efficiency appliances, solar photovoltaic (PV) generators, electric vehicles (EV) and energy storage systems (ESS). The high penetration of such buildings changes the typical electric power load profile, which without appropriate controls, may become a “duck curve” when the surplus PV generation is high, or a “dragon curve” when the EV charging load is high. A smart home may contribute to an optimal solution of such problems through the energy storage capacity, provided by its by battery energy storage system (BESS), heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) …
