Land Is Life: Settler Colonial Governance Of National Parks And Hunting In Taiwan, Wei-Chieh Jarita Chen
Land Is Life: Settler Colonial Governance Of National Parks And Hunting In Taiwan, Wei-Chieh Jarita Chen
Environmental Studies Honors Projects
This thesis situates Taiwan as a settler colonial state by examining the discourse around the governance of national parks and the criminalization of Indigenous hunting. Placed in the context of historical patterns of land dispossession and cultural genocide, these two issues represent the ongoing process of settler colonialism and the reproduction of settler colonial relations through environmentalism. I focus on the narratives around three case studies: the controversial and ultimately unsuccessful campaign for the Maqaw National Park, the Tumpu Daingaz buluo’s struggle with the Yushan National Park, and the Tama Talum Indigenous hunting constitutional reinterpretation case. I argue that settler …

Williamsburg Road Commercial Corridor Revitalization Plan, Rachael B. Thayer
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Capstone Projects
Sandston is the second oldest established neighborhood in the County of Henrico, and the commercial corridor found along Williamsburg Road has served this community for over a century. This corridor developed during a time when Williamsburg Road, or Route 60, was the primary roadway between the City of Richmond and Williamsburg. As seen with other American corridors that emerged before the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, the Sandston corridor has experienced a halt in the economic development and decrease in the vitality of the economic base in recent decades. The Williamsburg Road Commercial Corridor Revitalization Plan strives to identify key …
A New Normal: How Covid-19 And Digital Contact Tracing Highlight A Need For New Fourth Amendment Norms, Danielle J. Fong
A New Normal: How Covid-19 And Digital Contact Tracing Highlight A Need For New Fourth Amendment Norms, Danielle J. Fong
Emory Law Journal
Contact tracing helps epidemiologists identify individuals who have been exposed to a virus. Manual contact tracing has been used for decades to interrupt the transmission of disease and reduce the number of infections within a population. It is a pillar of disease control. But the manual process has certain limitations—it is time-intensive, expensive, and subject to human error. Digital contact tracing overcomes these limitations. Using GPS and Bluetooth technologies, digital contact tracing applications automate and expedite the tracing and notification processes, with life-saving implications. In 2020, countries that implemented contact tracing technology in response to COVID-19 contained outbreaks, minimized incidence …
Having Your Cake And Eating It Too: Why Voluntary Post-Petition 401(K) Contributions Are Disposable Income, Austin S. Howell
Having Your Cake And Eating It Too: Why Voluntary Post-Petition 401(K) Contributions Are Disposable Income, Austin S. Howell
Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal
Following the 2005 amendments to the Bankruptcy Code, the majority of chapter 13 debtors have been successful in minimizing their repayment obligations to creditors while bolstering their financial stability during retirement. The Bankruptcy Code allows chapter 13 debtors to retain their assets and repay their debts to creditors using their earned income. Alternatively, debtors may simply avoid some of the liability by dedicating a portion of their earned income for reasonably necessary expenses. Judicial inconsistencies have emerged concerning whether voluntary post-petition 401(k) retirement contributions for chapter 13 debtors constitute disposable income in accordance with Sections 541(b)(7) and 1325(b) of the …
The "Ideal Debtor" And The "Traditional" American Household, A. Mechele Dickerson
The "Ideal Debtor" And The "Traditional" American Household, A. Mechele Dickerson
Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal
Laws that award governmental benefits reflect an archetype of the type of person deemed worthy of governmental assistance and generally favor and reward people who have specific personal attributes or who engage in activities deemed socially desirable. Just as the Bankruptcy Code favors the “Ideal Debtor,” state and federal laws favor and subsidize Americans who live in a “traditional household.” Historically, this household consisted of husbands who earned income in the paid labor market and wives who stayed home to provide unpaid care for their husbands and minor children. Households that deviated from that norm rarely received the full range …

This Article examines the use of prosecutorial discretion from its first recorded use in the nineteenth century to protect Chinese subject to deportation, following to its implication in modern day immigration policy. A foundational Supreme Court case, known as Fong Yue Ting, provides a historical precedent for the protection of a category of people as well as a deeper history of prosecutorial discretion in immigration law. This Article also sharpens the policy argument to protect political activists through prosecutorial discretion and forces consideration for how modern immigration policy should respond to historical exclusions and racialized laws. This Article centers its …
Out Of The Gutter, Into The Gram: A Comical Message And A Digital Medium, Tala Majzoub
Out Of The Gutter, Into The Gram: A Comical Message And A Digital Medium, Tala Majzoub
Comparative Literature M.A. Essays
By analyzing three different comics on Instagram by the Lebanese political cartoonist, the Art of Boo, this essay argues that comics generate political meaning through emulating the medium of Instagram on the one hand, and by inviting the audience to become active participants on the other. Although a lot has been written about digital activism and political cartoons in the Arab world, little has been theorized about what makes this form of political artistic expression and dissent powerful on digital platforms. By drawing on Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics, this essay demonstrates that the medium of comics operates as a …
Gambling: The Dialogue Of Excess In Lanval And The Franklin’S Tale, Fanrui Shao
Gambling: The Dialogue Of Excess In Lanval And The Franklin’S Tale, Fanrui Shao
Comparative Literature M.A. Essays
Marie de France’s Lanval and Chaucer’s The Franklin’s Tale are two medieval stories based on the Breton form of poetry called the lai. Both texts focus on rash actions, in particular thoughtless utterance, committed by virtuous foreigners, and the consequences that ensue. On the surface, the outsiders suffer xenophobia and the disfavor of the local patriarchy. But their true problem is the “excess” that they carry with them. Communities censor the circulation of this excess, i.e., all people, objects and relationships that either come from outside or deviate from local norms. Reading excess in these tales through the lens …

Predicting phenotype from genotype is a central challenge in biology. By understanding genomic information to predict and improve traits, scientists can address the challenges and opportunities of achieving sustainable genetic improvement of complex, economically important traits in agriculturally relevant species. Converting the enormous, recent technical advances in all areas of genomics and phenomics into sustained and ecologically responsible improvements in food and fuel production is complex. It will require engaging agricultural genome to phenome (G2P) experts, drawing from a broad community, including crop and livestock scientists and essential integrative disciplines (e.g., engineers, economists, data and social scientists). To achieve this …

Using Political Psychology To Understand Populism, Intellectual Virtues, And Democratic Backsliding, Ingrid J. Haas
Using Political Psychology To Understand Populism, Intellectual Virtues, And Democratic Backsliding, Ingrid J. Haas
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
Political scientists have argued that populism is an ideology that can occur on both the left and right, whereby people begin to see politics as a battle between the people and a powerful elite that fails to represent the people’s interest and are attracted to political candidates who vow to fight corruption. In this chapter, I examine how research in political psychology may help to explain the motivations underlying citizens’ attraction to populist ideologies and political candidates. I argue that the same cognitive processes driving people toward populism are those that undermine the intellectual virtues, which in turn, decreases support …

Advantages of pangenomes over linear reference assemblies for genome research have recently been established. However, potential effects of sequence platform and assembly approach, or of combining assemblies created by different approaches, on pangenome construction have not been investigated. Here we generate haplotype-resolved assemblies from the offspring of three bovine trios representing increasing levels of heterozygosity that each demonstrate a substantial improvement in contiguity, completeness, and accuracy over the current Bos taurus reference genome. Diploid coverage as low as 20x for HiFi or 60x for ONT is sufficient to produce two haplotype-resolved assemblies meeting standards set by the Vertebrate Genomes Project. …
