Automated Acoustic Arrival Matching For Long Range Subsurface Positioning Of Autonomous Seagliders, Cristian Eric Graupe
Automated Acoustic Arrival Matching For Long Range Subsurface Positioning Of Autonomous Seagliders, Cristian Eric Graupe
Open Access Dissertations
An automated method was developed to align underwater acoustic receptions at various depths and ranges to a single reference prediction of long range acoustic arrival structure as it evolves with range in order to determine source-receiver range. Acoustic receptions collected by four autonomous underwater vehicles deployed in the Philippine Sea as part of an ocean acoustic propagation experiment were used to demonstrate the method. The natural sound speed duct in temperate waters known as the Sound Fixing and Ranging (SOFAR) channel enabled stable acoustic transmissions measured at ranges up to 700 km. The arrivals were measured in the upper 1000 …
Bacterial Community Dynamics In Rhode Island Coastal Ecosystems, Zachary Pimentel
Bacterial Community Dynamics In Rhode Island Coastal Ecosystems, Zachary Pimentel
Open Access Dissertations
In temperate coastal ecosystems, there are a variety of potential environmental niches and lifestyles for bacteria to occupy, along with constantly changing environmental conditions. Residing in such a diverse environment with broad habitats, bacterial adaptation can be observed at both the community and genome level. For example, an individual strain may acquire new mutations or genes to respond to varying conditions or occupy a new niche. In addition, the taxonomic composition of bacterial communities can shift, resulting in higher abundances of strains specialized for a new condition. In this dissertation, community and genome-level adaptations to varying lifestyles and environmental change …
Parenting Style And Help-Seeking For Child Anxiety And Depression: A Vignette Study, Hayley Pomerantz
Parenting Style And Help-Seeking For Child Anxiety And Depression: A Vignette Study, Hayley Pomerantz
Open Access Dissertations
Anxiety and depression are known to have a significant impact on the daily functioning of children and their families; yet only a fraction of diagnosed children receive treatment from professional mental health services. To better understand the discrepancy between high rates of child psychopathology and low rates of mental health service use, the current study examined parenting style and the time at which a parent decides to seek mental health treatment for their child. The current study hypothesized that parents would seek help when their child's symptoms and interference were moderate. It also hypothesized that parents with an authoritative or …
The Self-Health Movement: Changing For Good Health, Julian Michael Saad
The Self-Health Movement: Changing For Good Health, Julian Michael Saad
Open Access Dissertations
Each person's efforts to support their personal health deserve to be supported and valued by those providers, researchers, and politicians that take a vested interest in the health of populations. Although there are scientific fields, like Population Health, that are committed to supporting equitable patterns of health across populations, there remains a very real absence of a unifying framework that can coordinate the very essential efforts of persons, populations, providers, researchers, and politicians. There is a great need for a generally-accepted and widely-used way of communicating to individual persons and general populations about the science of their health and the …

The Synthetic Development Of Innovative Supramolecular Architectures For The Purposes Of Drug Delivery And Biosensing, Lauren Elizabeth Seveney
Open Access Dissertations
When I first started my graduate journey at The University of Rhode Island, I knew I wanted to pursue my research in an organic chemistry research group. I was drawn to the DeBoef Group, as their research was profoundly interesting in the sense where the group conducted research in various fields. Where each group had a name amongst the graduate students, such as “the nanopore group”, or “the polymer group”, the DeBoef Group was just what it truly is at heart, “the synthesis group”. I always wanted to be a synthetic chemist, I enjoyed the work, and taking something from …
Associations Among Affect, Alcohol Use, And Risky Sex: A Daily Diary Study Of First Nation Adults, Melissa R. Schick
Associations Among Affect, Alcohol Use, And Risky Sex: A Daily Diary Study Of First Nation Adults, Melissa R. Schick
Open Access Dissertations
Introduction: Optimal subjective well-being is comprised of high levels of positive affect, low levels of negative affect, and overall satisfaction with one’s life. Some literature has connected each component of subjective well-being with health risk behaviors including alcohol use and risky sexual behavior. While there is diversity in rates of alcohol use and risky sexual behavior among North American Indigenous (NAI) populations, they experience disproportionate rates of negative consequences associated with these behaviors (e.g., physical, social, legal). Approaches to reducing health disparities that emphasize improving well-being may be well-accepted among NAI communities given their calls to focus on protective, …
Advanced Water Treatment And Reuse With Activated Ferrate, Charles D. Spellman
Advanced Water Treatment And Reuse With Activated Ferrate, Charles D. Spellman
Open Access Dissertations
Ferrate is a promising, emerging water treatment technology. However, there has been limited research on the application of Ferrate in a water reuse paradigm. Recent literature has shown that ferrate oxidation of target contaminants could be improved by "activation" with the addition of reductants or acid. This study examined the impact of sulfite-activated Ferrate in laboratory water matrix and spiked municipal wastewater effluents with the goal of transforming organic contaminants of concern (e.g., 1,4-dioxane) and inactivating pathogenic organisms. Additionally, the formation of brominated disinfection byproducts by activated ferrate were examined and a proposed reaction pathway for byproduct formation is presented. …
Effects Of Surface Waves On Wind Stress And Upper Ocean Response Under Tropical Cyclones, Xiaohui Zhou
Effects Of Surface Waves On Wind Stress And Upper Ocean Response Under Tropical Cyclones, Xiaohui Zhou
Open Access Dissertations
Evolution of a tropical cyclone (TC) is strongly affected by the supply of heat from a warm ocean surface. When strong TC wind enhances upper ocean turbulence, deepens the mixed layer, and cools the sea surface temperature (SST), the reduced SST decreases the heat flux to the atmosphere and weakens the storm. The cool-water entrainment can be further enhanced by three-dimensional processes, notably by upwelling due to Ekman pumping. Therefore, accurate prediction of these upper ocean responses to a TC is critically important for improving TC intensity forecasts.
Since the upper ocean responses are driven by the applied wind stress, …

The number of confirmed cases of Lyme disease in the United States of America has risen from 12,801 cases reported in 1997, which is the earliest year these data are available, to 23,453 confirmed cases in 2019. In the eastern United States, black-legged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) are the primary vector of Lyme disease, which is caused by the spirochete bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi. Tick abundance tends to be highest in dense forest habitats and where wildlife diversity is low. Because wildlife species have varying levels of competency as reservoir hosts, sources of tick bloodmeals influence Lyme disease ecology. …

The Bigger Picture: Wrongful Conviction Documentary Thematic Vs Episodic Framing, Alecsandra N. Vac
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
True crime documentaries have gained popularity in the past decade, but those focusing on wrongful conviction cases have been on the rise (Doughty, 2018). Advocates against wrongful conviction, such as the Innocence Project, have been utilizing entertainment media to increase awareness on the issues present in the criminal justice system. However, the framing of wrongful conviction causes and cases (ex: focusing on extreme accusations of police misconduct and intentional forensic evidence tampering) could lead to a bias in how the viewers understand how miscarriages of justice occur. The primary research question being investigated here is, how are these advocacy-recommended documentaries …

Experience Of Parents Caring For A Child With An Acquired Disability, Brad E. Phillips
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background: Parents caring for a child with an acquired disability often report a negative impact on physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual health associated with caregiver burden related to their child’s complex health needs. This is further complicated by additional challenges related to the loss of a previously healthy child. Traditional patterns of loss follow linear, time-bound stages that have been observed to be unrelated to the experiences of these specific parents and their families. Therefore, the concept transforming loss has been developed to better understand how these parents navigate loss and find meaning in spite of their suffering.
