College of Natural and Applied Sciences

We report results of our analysis of the Kepler superaperture LC data of the open cluster NGC 6791 to search for pulsating sdB stars. We checked all pixels and we found only three sdB stars to be pulsating, KIC 2569576 (B3), KIC 2438324 (B4), and KIC 2437937 (B5). These stars were known to be pulsators before, though we extended data coverage detecting more frequencies and features in their amplitude spectra, i.e. new ltiplets and more complete period spacing sequences that we used for identifying geometry of the pulsation modes. The ltiplet splittings were also used to derive rotation periods. The …

Data, Knowledge Practices, And Naturecultural Worlds: Vehicle Emissions In The Anthropocene, Lindsay Poirier

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Books

This chapter details the various techno-cultural assemblages giving rise to data collected to model and measure anthropogenic worlds, arguing that data-based technologies both represent and co-produce the Anthropocene. It begins with a review of scholarship emerging at the intersection of science and technology studies and information studies that advances understanding of data infrastructure and knowledge practices, and their role within the anthropogenic assemblages that shape history. Drawing on a case study describing how vehicle emissions are measured and regulated in the US, I examine the materialities and mutability of technologies designed to produce data about air quality, along with the …

Rapid Implementation Of Telemedicine In Neurology During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Challenges In King Abdulaziz Medical City-Jeddah, Hussein A. Algahtani, Bader H. Shirah

Neurosciences

Telemedicine is defined as the remote medical practice of delivering healthcare services to the underserved using information and communication technology. It encompasses a wide range of medical activities, including diagnosis, treatment, disease prevention, and education. The coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused significant social dislocation, negative economic impact, and a major change in medical practice in Saudi Arabia. Telemedicine has rapidly moved to the frontline of healthcare practice due to the demand for prevention and mitigation strategies. It has been encouraged and facilitated with huge government support. Herein, we describe the virtual clinical practice of the neurology department …

Review Of Electroencephalography Signals Approaches For Mental Stress Assessment, Eyad T. Attar Jan 2022

Review Of Electroencephalography Signals Approaches For Mental Stress Assessment, Eyad T. Attar

Neurosciences

The innovation of electroencephalography (EEG) more than a century ago supports the technique to assess brain structure and function in clinical health and research applications. The EEG signals were identified on their frequency ranges as delta (from 0.5 to 4 Hz), theta (from 4 to 7 Hz), alpha (from 8 to 12 Hz), beta (from 16 to 31 Hz), and gamma (from 36 to 90 Hz). Stress is a sense of emotional tension caused by several life events. For example, worrying about something, being under pressure, and facing significant challenges are causes of stress. The human body is affected by …

15q11.2 Bp1-Bp2 Microdeletion Presenting As Progressive Spastic Paraplegia And Brain Images Of Small Vessel Disease, Qianqian Sha, Yu Xia, Xiya Shen, Ailian Du

Neurosciences

15q11.2 BP1-BP2 microdeletion is related to clinical abnormalities including general developmental delay, speech and neuropsychiatric disorders, which is known as Angelman syndrome. However, the clinical penetrance and phenotype of 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 deletion is varied and confusing. Herein, we retrospectively described a 50-year-old male patient who manifested with progressive spastic paraplegia of lower limbs and episodic exacerbation. While brain MRI showed white matter hyperintensities, lacunes, cerebral microbleeds, enlarged perivascular spaces, and brain atrophy, mimicking small vessel disease. Next-generation sequencing combining multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification identified a 253 kb 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 microdeletion, encompassing 4 conserved imprinted genes ( NIPA1 , NIPA2 , …

Ischemic Stroke In A Patient With Fahr’S Disease Carrying Biallelic Mutations In The Myorg Gene, Yan Li, Wei Fang, Wenying Long, Guohua Zhao

Neurosciences

Fahr’s disease (FD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by symmetric calcifications in the bilateral basal ganglia and dentate nuclei. Mutations in six genes are known to cause FD. In the present case, a 44-year-old woman was admitted because of bradykinesia that had started developing 3 years ago. Brain CT and MRI revealed severe calcification in the bilateral basal ganglia, thalamus, dentate nuclei, and subcortical white matter. Whole-exome sequencing revealed two previously described compound heterozygous mutations within the MYORG gene. About one year later, the patient developed sudden-onset left-sided hemiparesis. The MRI revealed a small infarction in the right internal capsule. …

The effectiveness of artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) depends not only on that of artemisinin but also on that of partner molecules. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of mutations in the Pfdhfr, Pfdhps, and Pfmdr1 genes from isolates collected during a clinical study. Plasmodium genomic DNA samples extracted from symptomatic malaria patients from Dogondoutchi, Niger, were sequenced by the Sanger method to determine mutations in the Pfdhfr (codons 51, 59, 108, and 164), Pfdhps (codons 436, 437, 540, 581, and 613), and Pfmdr1 (codons 86, 184, 1034, and 1246) genes. A Retrospective Study Comparing The Effects Of Dynamic Tape In Addition To Treatment On Adults With Upper Extremity Tendinopathy Versus Treatment Alone: A Focus On Elbow Tendinopathy, Lindsey Heaton Jan 2022

A Retrospective Study Comparing The Effects Of Dynamic Tape In Addition To Treatment On Adults With Upper Extremity Tendinopathy Versus Treatment Alone: A Focus On Elbow Tendinopathy, Lindsey Heaton

OTD DEx Reports - College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

"Tendinopathy is a common overuse injury in the athletic and working population that is commonly treated with therapeutic tapes. Dynamic Tape (DT) is a biomechanical tape that works mechanically and alters movement patterns to absorb load and re-inject that energy back into the body without limiting range of motion. There is minimal research on the efficacy of DT for elbow tendinopathy. In addition to this, there was not yet a protocol on how to use DT for upper extremity tendinopathies. The researchers used these limitations to design a project with the intent to prove the efficacy of DT as a …

The Role Of Occupational Therapy: Evaluation Of The Needs Of Adolescents In Intensive Emergency Residential Homes, Caroline Phillips

OTD DEx Reports - College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

"Adolescents are placed in intensive emergency residences (IER) due to behavior that has come to the attention of the MA Department of Children and Families. Prior research has shown that exposure to trauma at a young age causes “pathophysiological changes in the brain, and these changes can be manifested as behavioral, cognitive, and mood disorders” (Yaribeygi, et al., 2017). These changes may also be a response to unproductive coping transmitted from caregivers (Dreter, 2018). A descriptive research study was conducted that involved creating novel reports titled: “What are the needs of adolescents who are referred to LUK residences that Occupational …
