The Interrelatedness Of Attachment Insecurity, Alexithymia, And Emotional Loneliness, Becky Fromm
The Interrelatedness Of Attachment Insecurity, Alexithymia, And Emotional Loneliness, Becky Fromm
All Master's Theses
As much as 58% of the United States population operate with an insecure attachment style acquired in infancy during socio-emotional development, resulting in adverse internal working models outside of conscious awareness that negatively affect later relationships. Additionally, the surgeon general elevated loneliness to epidemic status, citing evidence that up to 61% of Americans experience such loneliness. Attachment insecurity and loneliness are associated with countless physical, mental, socio-emotional, and psychological issues that negatively affect well-being. Without an early environment that promotes the awareness of and language to describe emotions, alexithymia—difficulty identifying and communicating one's feelings and needs—may emerge. Without emotional awareness …
Exploring Agricultural Worker Self-Efficacy During A Covid-19 Delta Variant Surge And Adverse Environmental Conditions, Hannah Lascano
Exploring Agricultural Worker Self-Efficacy During A Covid-19 Delta Variant Surge And Adverse Environmental Conditions, Hannah Lascano
All Master's Theses
Yakima County is a rural county with an urban core located in central Washington State. With over 60% of its workforce dedicated to agriculture, food production, and other essential industries, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been particularly compounded in Yakima County populations. Factors such as low decision-making power, limited ability to social distance, and occupational limitations such as fear of job loss, non-compliance with immigration regulations, and lack of representation have yet to be explored during the COVID-19 Delta variant (Delta) surge in conjunction with environmental conditions. This study utilized a novel, online survey of Yakima County residents, …
Activity Levels Of Bat Species At Interstate Highway Sites With And Without Wildlife Underpasses In The Washington Cascades, Jenna Chapman
Activity Levels Of Bat Species At Interstate Highway Sites With And Without Wildlife Underpasses In The Washington Cascades, Jenna Chapman
All Master's Theses
Roads force wildlife to navigate degraded and fragmented habitats across the globe, creating barriers to movement and increasing the risk of mortality. This includes bats, whose movements between foraging and roosting habitats may be impeded by roads. Wildlife crossing structures (WCS) are a common mitigation strategy to increase connectivity, but investigation into bat activity in and around these structures is limited. I investigated bat species presence and activity along Interstate-90 in the Cascade Range of Washington State. My goal was to test whether all bat species found in the nearby forest were also active along the highway, and whether bat …
Higher Education And Food Access: A Case Study Of Food Access Initiatives And Their Community Impact, Rebecca Wheaton
Higher Education And Food Access: A Case Study Of Food Access Initiatives And Their Community Impact, Rebecca Wheaton
All Master's Theses
Food security issues are being prioritized across college campuses and among student communities in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. While basic needs services are typically available on campuses, there is still a discrepancy between availability and accessibility. Ellensburg, Washington, has vulnerable food-insecure populations, including Central Washington University (CWU) students, whose access issues involve not only social, cultural, and political dimensions, but also practical considerations like transportation, distance to grocery stores, and affordability of food resources. A central concern of this research is to understand food as constitutive of different forms of symbolic, cultural, and economic capital following Bourdieu’s Theory …
Dynamics Of Targeted Ransomware Negotiation, Pierce Ryan, John Fokker, Sorcha Healy, Andreas Amann
Dynamics Of Targeted Ransomware Negotiation, Pierce Ryan, John Fokker, Sorcha Healy, Andreas Amann
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
In this paper, we consider how the development of targeted ransomware has affected the dynamics of ransomware negotiations to better understand how to respond to ransomware attacks. We construct a model of ransomware negotiations as an asymmetric non-cooperative two-player game. In particular, our model considers the investments that a malicious actor must make in order to conduct a successful targeted ransomware attack. We demonstrate how imperfect information is a crucial feature for replicating observed real-world behaviour. Furthermore, we present optimal strategies for both the malicious actor and the target, and demonstrate how imperfect information results in a non-trivial optimal strategy …

Melatonin As An Immunomodulator In Children With Down Syndrome, Dean Huggard, Lynne Kelly, Amy Worrall, Eleanor Gallagher, Lida Fallah, Lucas Lu Yoo, Fiona Mcgrane, Niamh Lagan, Edna Roche, Joanne Balfe, Derek G. Doherty, Eleanor J. Molloy
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Background: Down syndrome (DS) is a disorder characterised by marked immune dysfunction, increased mortality from sepsis, chronic inflammation, increased oxidative stress, sleep disturbance and possibly abnormal endogenous melatonin levels. Melatonin has a myriad of immune functions, and we hypothesised that this therapeutic agent could modulate the innate immune system in this cohort. Methods: We investigated neutrophil and monocyte function (CD11b, TLR4 expression by flow cytometry), genes involved in TLR signalling (MyD88, IRAK4, TRIF), the inflammasome (NLRP3, IL-1β), and circadian rhythm (BMAL, CLOCK, CRY) by qPCR, and inflammatory cytokines (IL-2, IL-6, IL-8, IL-18, IL-1β, TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-10, IL-1ra, VEGF, Epo, GM-CSF) …
The Case Of Singapore, Hwee Kwan Chow, Kong Weng Ho
The Case Of Singapore, Hwee Kwan Chow, Kong Weng Ho
Research Collection School of Economics
The economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on Singapore was more severe and protracted than the global financial crisis. Singapore responded with easing of the monetary policy stance, reinforcing financial stability, helping individuals to reduce debt obligations, easing business cashflow constraints, adjusting financial regulatory and supervisory protocols to cope with immediate challenges, and enabling the financial sectors to build long-term capabilities. Fiscal responses were unprecedented with four consecutive budgets and two ministerial statements, initially focusing on immediate assistance in respect of jobs, businesses, households, and later refined to providing more sector-specific assistance as the pandemic evolved with more detailed information …

Geology Of The Porter Gap 7.5–Minute Quadrangle, Alabama, And Stretched Pebble Analysis Within The Western Blue Ridge Of The Southern Appalachians, Tessa Mills
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The Porter Gap 7.5–minute quadrangle in eastern Alabama contains portions of the undifferentiated sedimentary Knox Group of the Valley and Ridge province, the metamorphic Talladega Group of the western Blue Ridge, and the metamorphic Ashland Supergroup of the eastern Blue Ridge. Three major faults separate the rock units, including the Talladega-Cartersville fault, the Hillabee thrust fault, and the Hollins Line fault. Deformation and metamorphism of rocks within the Talladega Group occurred during the middle to late Mississippian (~334–320 Ma) recorded by stretched pebbles within the Cheaha Quartzite member of the Lay Dam Formation. Stretched pebbles within the Cheaha Quartzite have …

Equine-Assisted Therapy And Learning Interventions With Youth: A Meta-Analysis And Quasi-Experimental Study., Sarah Lovins
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Equine-assisted psychotherapy interventions have become increasingly used and tested as an alternative or complementary approach with youth. This project presents two studies. The first study consists of an overview of existing reviews and a meta-analysis of controlled and comparison studies on the effectiveness of equine interventions with youth. A comprehensive search and selection procedure produced 3,525 records, from which 56 quantitative studies were identified, and ultimately 16 controlled or comparison studies were selected for inclusion in the meta-analysis. Results showed a statistically significant, medium, and homogenous effect size for the overall effectiveness of equine interventions for youth psycho-social outcomes ( …

Interoception Toolkit: A Resource For Occupational Therapy Practitioners To Use With Children And Their Families, Heidi Lynn Janssen
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Purpose: Interoception refers to one’s ability to sense the internal condition of the body, including sensory messages from body parts and internal organs (Craig, 2002). In the past 30 years, scientists and researchers have discovered a powerful connection between interoceptive appraisal skills and self-regulation, emotional identification, emotional regulation, social skills, and nearly every task in daily life (Mahler, 2017). The purpose of this project is to provide practitioners with an educational platform that describes the sensorimotor skill of interoception applied throughout the occupational therapy process.
Methods: The development of this product was initiated with a thorough review of literature to …

Exploring The Predictive Power Of Machine Learning For Energy Consumption In Buildings, Vibhu Sharma
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Graduate Student Publications
This study investigates the application of machine learning techniques to predict energy consumption in buildings. Five machine learning models (linear regression, decision trees, random forest, support vector machines, and neural networks) are evaluated, and a permutation feature importance analysis is conducted to identify the most influential features. The random forest model emerges as the top performer, achieving a mean absolute error of 15.2%. Temperature, solar radiation, and relative humidity are found to be the important features in energy prediction. The study demonstrates the potential of machine learning for energy prediction in buildings, contributing to more efficient energy management and sustainability.

Meltpondnet: A Swin Transformer U-Net For Detection Of Melt Ponds On Arctic Sea Ice, Ivan Sudakow, Vijayan K. Asari, Ruixu Liu, Denis Demchev
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
High-resolution aerial photographs of Arctic region are a great source for different sea ice feature recognition, which are crucial to validate, tune, and improve climate models. Melt ponds on the surface of melting Arctic sea ice are of particular interest as they are sensitive and valuable indicators and are proxy to the processes in the Arctic climate system. Manual analysis of this remote sensing data is extremely difficult and time-consuming due to the complex shapes and unpredictable boundaries of the melt ponds, and that leads to the necessity for automatizing the processes. In this study, we propose a robust and …

Circuit Optimization Techniques For Efficient Ex-Situ Training Of Robust Memristor Based Liquid State Machine, Alex Henderson, Christopher Yakopcic, Cory Merkel, Steven Harbour, Tarek M. Taha, Hananel Hazan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Spiking neural network hardware offers a high performance, power-efficient and robust platform for the processing of complex data. Many of these systems require supervised learning, which poses a challenge when using gradient-based algorithms due to the discontinuous properties of SNNs. Memristor based hardware can offer gains in portability, power reduction, and throughput efficiency when compared to pure CMOS. This paper proposes a memristor-based spiking liquid state machine (LSM). The inherent dynamics of the LSM permit the use of supervised learning without backpropagation for weight updates. To carry out the design space evaluation of the LSM for optimal hardware performance, several …
Olympians As Laborers: How Unionizing Can Help Athletes Bargain For Compensation And Better Structural Support, Sherif Farrag
Olympians As Laborers: How Unionizing Can Help Athletes Bargain For Compensation And Better Structural Support, Sherif Farrag
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
Team USA athletes suffer poor structural support and inadequate compensation despite constituting irreplaceable labor for the multi-billion-dollar Olympic sports industry. This poor support is evident in recent complaints made by Olympic stars of the poor mental health support provided by the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee and in its failure to prevent nearly two decades of sexual abuse perpetrated on USA Gymnastics gymnasts. The inadequate compensation is apparent as athletes continue to receive no wages for their participation in the Olympics or Olympic-sanctioned events, generally struggle financially, and face restrictions on licensing their name, image, and likeness to partners …
Face The Facts, Or Is The Face A Fact?: Biometric Privacy In Publicly Available Data, Daniel Levin
Face The Facts, Or Is The Face A Fact?: Biometric Privacy In Publicly Available Data, Daniel Levin
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
Recent advances in biometric technologies have caused a stir among the privacy community. Specifically, facial recognition technologies facilitated through data scraping practices have called into question the basic precepts we had around exercising biometric privacy. Yet, in spite of emerging case law on the permissibility of data scraping, comparatively little attention has been given to the privacy implications endemic to such practices.
On the one hand, privacy proponents espouse the view that manipulating publicly available data from, for example, our social media profiles, derogates from users’ expectations around the kind of data they share with platforms (and the obligations such …

Failed Analogies: Justice Thomas’S Concurrence In Biden V. Knight First Amendment Institute, Sarah S. Seo
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
Twenty-six years ago, twenty-six words created the internet. Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act is a short, yet powerful, provision that notably protects social media platforms, among other interactive computer services, from liability for content created by third-party users. At the time of its enactment, Section 230 aimed to encourage the robust growth of the then-nascent internet while protecting it from government regulation. More recently, however, it has been wielded by Big Tech companies like Twitter and Facebook to prevent any liability for real-world harms that stem from virtual interactions conducted over their platforms.
Although the Supreme Court has …

Algorithms And Misinformation: The Constitutional Implications Of Regulating Microtargeting, Talia Bulka
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
The increased popularity of social media in recent years has brought with it unwanted consequences. Most notably, the world is experiencing a widespread epidemic of online misinformation and disinformation. In the form of news stories and advertisements, false information about candidates like Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and Donald Trump has spread over Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok. Since false information is often more sensational than the truth, this information is reposted and shared until it reaches millions of people. However, the real culprit of this misinformation phenomenon is microtargeting—algorithms that exploit users’ personal information and previous media interactions to target …

I See Dead Patents: How Bugs In The Patent System Keep Expired Patents Alive, Dinis Cheian
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
One of the most important days in the life of a patent is the day it dies.
The moment a patent dies, the patent owner loses her monopoly over her invention, ending the stream of income generated by that patent. Without an enforceable patent to protect the invention, the competitors and public can freely buy and sell copycat products that compete with the patent owner’s. Consumers reap the rewards in the form of more options and lower prices.
Normally, those potential competitors must wait exactly twenty years from the date the patent application is filed with the United States Patent …

Signs Inscribed On A Gate: The Impact Of Van Buren V. United States On Civil Claims Under The Computer Fraud And Abuse Act, Scott T. Lashway, Matthew M.K. Stein
Western New England Law Review
This Article addresses the impact of the U.S. Supreme Court’s June 2021 decision in Van Buren v. United States on what constitutes“ authorization” to access a computer under the Federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA)—a law that imposes both criminal and private civil liability for violations—and concludes that, so far, the Van Buren decision has not rendered the CFAA toothless. The Introduction briefly explains the history of the CFAA, a summary of why it was enacted, how organizations have relied upon it as an important tool to protect themselves from computer hackers and increased cybersecurity risks, and a Circuit …
