Uncertainty-Autoencoder-Based Privacy And Utility Preserving Data Type Conscious Transformation, Bishwas Mandal, George Amariucai, Shuangqing Wei

Faculty Publications

We propose an adversarial learning framework that deals with the privacy-utility tradeoff problem under two types of conditions: data-type ignorant, and data-type aware. Under data-type aware conditions, the privacy mechanism provides a one-hot encoding of categorical features, representing exactly one class, while under data-type ignorant conditions the categorical variables are represented by a collection of scores, one for each class. We use a neural network architecture consisting of a generator and a discriminator, where the generator consists of an encoder-decoder pair, and the discriminator consists of an adversary and a utility provider. Unlike previous research considering this kind of architecture, …

This article reports on discussions from a three-day webinar about artificial intelligence (AI) in archival appraisal and selection. Increasingly, workshops and research are conducted to discuss AI and archives. This article is an example of this growing interest in the potential of AI for the field of archives. Yet, within the field, discussions about how AI can be applied in archival appraisal and selection is still limited. To advance a conversation on the issue, and particularly on ways to use AI in archival appraisal and selection, we organized a three-day webinar in 2022 with a diverse group of researchers and …

Optimization Of Multi-Mode Classification For Process Monitoring, Z. T. Webb, M. Nnadili, E. E. Seghers, L. A. Briceno-Mena, J. A. Romagnoli Jan 2022

Optimization Of Multi-Mode Classification For Process Monitoring, Z. T. Webb, M. Nnadili, E. E. Seghers, L. A. Briceno-Mena, J. A. Romagnoli

Faculty Publications

Process monitoring seeks to identify anomalous plant operating states so that operators can take the appropriate actions for recovery. Instrumental to process monitoring is the labeling of known operating states in historical data, so that departures from these states can be identified. This task can be challenging and time consuming as plant data is typically high dimensional and extensive. Moreover, automation of this procedure is not trivial since ground truth labels are often unavailable. In this contribution, this problem is approached as a multi-mode classification one, and an automatic framework for labeling using unsupervised Machine Learning (ML) methods is presented. …

Using Powder Diffraction To Give Insight Into Structures Of Ir2(Diisocyanomenthane)4x2 [Dimen] (X = Cl; Pf6; Bph4), Mairead Brownell Jan 2022

Using Powder Diffraction To Give Insight Into Structures Of Ir2(Diisocyanomenthane)4x2 [Dimen] (X = Cl; Pf6; Bph4), Mairead Brownell

Scripps Senior Theses

Ir2(dimen)42+ (dimen = 1,8-diisocyanomenthane) has been studied extensively as model compound to better understand catalysis of photochemical reactions. Although Ir2(dimen)42+ has been used primarily to observe the photophysical changes of metal-metal transitions, it gives great insight into the transitions that allow other d8-d8 metal complexes to undergo photochemical processes and generate hydrogen gas. The large visible range by which Ir2(dimen)42+ (1) can be electronically excited in solution is indicative of its two solution phase ground states, which interestingly have been hypothesized to resemble two unique packing structures observed in the powder state. In this study, the powder diffraction patterns of …

"All That Remains Of Husband", James L. Kleerup Jan 2022

"All That Remains Of Husband", James L. Kleerup

Scripps Senior Theses

Within Book 4 of Virgil’s Aeneid, the question of marriage is repeatedly raised. Specifically, it is debated whether or not Dido and Aeneas are married. This question is hotly debated by both the characters and scholars, as the answer is not definitively given within the text. This paper seeks to provide an answer, as the contemporary Roman reader would likely have interpreted their relationship, and also address why Virgil remained purposefully vague. Within Book 4, three key scenes are examined: the discussion between Juno and Venus where Juno proposes the wedding, the cave scene, and Dido and Aeneas’ argument …

Pitch Perfect: Impression Formation And Impression Management In Women's Pitch Modulation, Grace A. Corrigan Jan 2022

Pitch Perfect: Impression Formation And Impression Management In Women's Pitch Modulation, Grace A. Corrigan

Scripps Senior Theses

How does the pitch of a woman’s voice impact how she is perceived, and how might women change the pitch of their voices to fit the situation at hand? Study 1 examined whether pitch plays a role in impression formation. Participants listened to two women’s voices at three pitch levels (raised, unchanged, lowered) and rated the speakers’ personality traits. Ratings of speaker competence, confidence, and intelligence were significantly lower for the pitch-raised voices than for the unchanged or pitch-lowered voices. Additionally, ratings of speaker persuasiveness and attractiveness were significantly lower for the pitch-raised voices than for the unchanged voices. No …

Deconstructing U.S. Army Maps Of Korea: A Case Study For Rethinking Historical Environmental Data, Lee Beckwith Jan 2022

Deconstructing U.S. Army Maps Of Korea: A Case Study For Rethinking Historical Environmental Data, Lee Beckwith

Scripps Senior Theses

At a time when the natural world and global climate are experiencing extreme changes at unprecedented speeds, understanding these environmental changes over time is more important than ever. With advances in remote sensing technology, large amounts of information about the natural world are becoming more accessible than ever before; however, satellite-collected data are only available from 1984 onwards. To understand how land use has changed on longer timescales, researchers have turned towards archival maps as a data source. Archival maps are a rich source of environmental information; however, they are often saturated with complicated colonial histories. Maps, more so than …

Virginia Woolf And The Consolations Of Abstraction, Ella Murdock Gardner Jan 2022

Virginia Woolf And The Consolations Of Abstraction, Ella Murdock Gardner

Scripps Senior Theses

Woolf believed that there are “two spheres: the novel; and life,” and her “great difficulty is the usual one—how to adjust the two worlds” (A Writer’s Diary 203, 208). But with this “great difficulty” comes great possibility; by pointing to the separation of these two spheres within and throughout her works, Woolf finds ways to create meaning from this border. Even as Woolf’s novels deal with the tragic restrictions of social conventions, the insurmountable barriers to communication and intimacy, the petty insignificance of human life and death within the context of an uncaring universe, the abstraction of both their …

Intimacy, Unity, And Shared Consciousness In The Novels Of Virginia Woolf, Meghan Rose Condas Jan 2022

Intimacy, Unity, And Shared Consciousness In The Novels Of Virginia Woolf, Meghan Rose Condas

Scripps Senior Theses

In the novels of Virginia Woolf, the difficulties of deep intimacy are troubled by the limitations of language and the fear of shame and vulnerability. What can characters express, and do words have the ability to appropriately describe their feelings of love and desire? Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, and The Waves grapple with the penetrability of the mind and the potential for shared thought between characters. In Mrs. Dalloway, Woolf utilizes Clarissa and her relationship with men to highlight how eroticism and affection are inhibited by shame. To evade the anxieties of articulating romantic feelings and …

Making The Invisible Visible: Mapping Chronic Pain Through Art, Caroline Young Jan 2022

Making The Invisible Visible: Mapping Chronic Pain Through Art, Caroline Young

Scripps Senior Theses

This Studio Art thesis explores how I use my art practice as a chronic pain healing process. It draws on the fundamentals of the neuroscience behind pain and the implications of this science for people with chronic pain. People with chronic pain often turn to alternative healing techniques in their search for relief; my own alternative healing approach comes from my art practice of “pain mapping."

The artistic healing process that I have developed takes inspiration from chronically ill artists such as Frida Kahlo and Anna Cowley Ford. The artistic mapping of my pain that I have developed primarily uses …

Alternatives To Immigrant Detention Under Biden: Expansion Of Immigrant Industrial Complex, Amber Chong Jan 2022

Alternatives To Immigrant Detention Under Biden: Expansion Of Immigrant Industrial Complex, Amber Chong

Scripps Senior Theses

This article examines the political reasons for the expansion of alternatives to detention (ATD) for immigrants under President Joe Biden’s administration. Enrollment in ATDs has doubled since the beginning of Biden’s presidency in January 2021, a stark growth after over ⅔ of voters polled by the ACLU said they would support the elimination of private immigrant detention centers. To understand the growth of ATD, I analyze the bipartisan expansion of immigrant detention and militarization of the U.S. Mexico border, discussing the Democratic Party’s history of criminalizing immigrants and bolstering surveillance in service of racist notions of “national security.” I then …

A Systems Approach To Increasing Lmu Undergraduate Gym Attendance, Timothy O’Rourke

LMU Theses and Dissertations

Due to lack of motivation, education, and free time, the Burns Recreation Center sees only 20% of LMU undergraduate students daily during academic terms. It’s no secret that gym attendance is beneficial for your health. Getting enough physical activity is important for quality of life. The problem we’re seeing is not enough gym attendance by LMU undergraduate students. The school gym sees only 20% of undergraduate students daily and 40% of undergraduate students never visit the school gym! The proposed solution to address this problem is a community specific mobile app that is designed to motivate, educate, and inspire students …

Review Of The Impact Of Federal And State Turnaround Policies: A Case Study Of A District In State Receivership, Megan Marie Atkins Jan 2022

Review Of The Impact Of Federal And State Turnaround Policies: A Case Study Of A District In State Receivership, Megan Marie Atkins

LMU Theses and Dissertations

The districts that have been in receivership in the State of California have a student population categorized as socioeconomically disadvantaged. While state receivership is triggered by fiscal insolvency, the school district in receivership is not performing to state standards according to the indicators on the California Dashboard (California Department of Education, 2021a). In order to return to local control and governance by a locally elected Board of Trustees, the district must meet its financial obligations and meet and maintain the Financial Crisis and Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) review criteria. California Assembly Bill No. 1840 (Cal. 2018) shifted the power from …

Forgiving Without Forgetting? Privacy In An Age Of Digital Permanence, Rock Park Jan 2022

Forgiving Without Forgetting? Privacy In An Age Of Digital Permanence, Rock Park

Political Science Honors Projects

The 21st Century has been marked by increasing digital globalization, and an extensive, complete record of most individual’s public and private lives. This posed enough of a risk to privacy that in 2014, the European Union began to outline and articulate the digital privacy rights of European citizens in a set of policies known as “right to be forgotten” laws. As of 2018, these right to be forgotten protections had been codified into the General Data Privacy Regulation for the EU (GDPR). This paper explores the construction of privacy and subsequent adoption of the right to be forgotten specifically in …

Effect Of Ldh On The Dissolution And Adsorption Behaviors Of Sulfate In Portland Cement Early Hydration Process, Zedong Qiu, Limin Deng, Shuang Lu, Guoqiang Li, Zhen Tang Jan 2022

Effect Of Ldh On The Dissolution And Adsorption Behaviors Of Sulfate In Portland Cement Early Hydration Process, Zedong Qiu, Limin Deng, Shuang Lu, Guoqiang Li, Zhen Tang

Faculty Publications

In recent years, it has been widely recognized that the incorporation of Mg-Al-LDH into cement-based materials can improve the salt corrosion resistance of cement-based materials. The reason for the improvement comes from the anion adsorption capacity of Mg-Al-LDH. It was confirmed that the addition of Mg-Al-LDH would accelerate the setting and hardening of cement paste. With the increase in the Mg-Al-LDH content, the initial setting time of cement slurry with different gypsum contents will decrease by 10-50% and the viscosity of the cement slurry will increase by 100-200%. Depending on different gypsum contents, the degree of cement hydration varied. This …

Event-Triggered Control For Discrete-Time Systems Using A Positive Systems Approach, Frederic Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Corina Barbalata, Zhong Ping Jiang Jan 2022

Event-Triggered Control For Discrete-Time Systems Using A Positive Systems Approach, Frederic Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Corina Barbalata, Zhong Ping Jiang

Faculty Publications

We provide an output feedback event-triggered controller for discrete-time linear systems. We make novel use of positive systems, interval observers, an event-triggered state estimator, and triggering times that are computed from estimator values. This provides a discrete-time analog of our recent positive systems approach for continuous-time systems. A key novel ingredient in our discrete-time event triggers is their use of vectors of absolute values, instead of the usual Euclidean norm. We illustrate the benefits of our method using a model for event-triggered BlueROV2 underwater vehicles.

Cable Decoupling And Cable-Based Stiffening Of Continuum Robots, Parsa Molaei, Nekita A. Pitts, Genevieve Palardy, Ji Su, Matthew K. Mahlin, James H. Neilan, Hunter B. Gilbert Jan 2022

Cable Decoupling And Cable-Based Stiffening Of Continuum Robots, Parsa Molaei, Nekita A. Pitts, Genevieve Palardy, Ji Su, Matthew K. Mahlin, James H. Neilan, Hunter B. Gilbert

Faculty Publications

Cable-driven continuum robots, which are robots with a continuously flexible backbone and no identifiable joints that are actuated by cables, have shown great potential for many applications in unstructured, uncertain environments. However, the standard design for a cable-driven continuum robot segment, which bends a continuous backbone along a circular arc, has many compliant modes of deformation which are uncontrolled, and which may result in buckling or other undesirable behaviors if not ameliorated. In this paper, we detail an approach for using additional cables to selectively stiffen planar cable-driven robots without substantial coupling to the actuating cables. A mechanics-based model based …

What Do We Long For? Reflections On Feminist Movements For Social Justice, Aman Agah, Emerson Barrett, Libia Marqueza Castro, Val Chang, Patti Duncan, Adrianna Nicolay

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

In this collective essay, we contemplate tipping points including the COVID-19 pandemic, climate crisis, and gendered and racialized forms of state violence through our reflections on shifting meanings of and movements for social justice, shaped by our own lived experiences. Inspired by the writings of feminist scholars and activists including Grace Lee Boggs, adrienne maree brown, Dean Spade, bell hooks, and others, we grapple with the meanings of social justice in contemporary contexts.
