Military Supremacy In Pakistan: A Case Of Military Dictators And Eluded Democracy, Anushe Engineer Jan 2022

Military Supremacy In Pakistan: A Case Of Military Dictators And Eluded Democracy, Anushe Engineer

Scripps Senior Theses

For more than half of Pakistan’s 75 years of existence, the country has been ruled by military dictators. Although Pakistan is more or less considered a democracy, I will be arguing in my thesis that it is, in fact, a garrison-cum-hybrid democratic state. I will explain through various domestic and international events how Pakistan’s military leaders have taken advantage of several foreign and domestic events to stay in power, even when democratically elected civilian governments were ruling. The actions and decisions of military rulers have become institutionalized in Pakistan and shaped its future trajectory in terms of institutional, political, social …

Understanding The Environmental Implications Of The Microbiome Of Canals In Bangkok, Thailand, Emma Tao

Scripps Senior Theses

The canals of Bangkok, Thailand hold significant economic and social value, yet the increasing urbanization of the city has resulted in increased water pollution. Agricultural runoff and urban waste contribute to the degradation of the water quality, which has impaired its safe usage by the people of the city. This study focused on analyzing the microbiome of the water in the canals in correlation with the surrounding environment, both in and out of the water. Ten sites along the Bangkok canals were analyzed. DNA was isolated for the sequencing of the 16s rRNA gene to determine the microbial diversity of …

Venous Ulcer Wound Care Management, Sonam Dolkar Jan 2022

Venous Ulcer Wound Care Management, Sonam Dolkar

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Problem: Venous ulcer wounds are commonly managed in outpatient clinics by providers in conjunction with nurses; however, lack of wound care knowledge and evidenced-based wound care management among nurses make providing effective care challenging and difficult. Known as stasis ulcer, venous ulcer accounts for 80 percent of lower extremity ulcerations and its incidence increases with age and recurrence is quite common. These wounds can be challenging to treat, often taking at least four to six weeks to heal, and often requiring long-term therapeutics for optimal healing and reoccurrence prevention. Venous ulcer wounds are an important medical problem with substantial economic …

Reconsidering The Call To Teach: K-12 Teacher Responses To Schools’ Addressing A Global Health Disruption, Dejuanna Parker

The Journal of Advancing Education Practice

This qualitative study explored K-12 teacher experiences with school responses to the pandemic that prompted instructors to reconsider the call to teach. Two theories provided a lens through which to view the problem. The Theory of Purpose was applied to analyzing instructors’ original decision to teach. Fortigenesis Theory undergirded the exploration of teacher responses to physical and emotional challenges. Three themes emerged as a result of data analysis: Discontent and Disdain for Post-Pandemic Teaching Practices, Emotional Distance Created by Physical Distance, and Administrative Priorities and Teacher Wellbeing.

A Farewell To Gender Norms: Non-Heteronormative Characters In Ernest Hemingway's Writing, Christopher Bauman

Master of Liberal Studies Theses

This thesis examines the individuals in Ernest Hemingway’s personal life that inspired the non-heteronormative characters in his writing. It asserts that those most responsible for this influence include Jim Gamble, Grace Hemingway, Ruth Arnold, Gertrude Stein, Sydney Franklin, Glenway Westcott, Hemingway’s wives, mainly Mary Welsh Hemingway, and Ernest Hemingway himself. The methodology included a thorough analysis of Hemingway’s biographies, personal letters, memoirs, short stories, novels, and Mary’s diary to identify and draw parallels between the named individuals and the fictional non-heteronormative characters inspired by them. The analyzed Hemingway works include: “A Simple Enquiry,” “The Mercenaries,” “Mother of a Queen,” “The …

Qu’Est Qu’Un Vrai Français : Le Front National Et Le Développement Contemporain Des Politiques De La ‘Francité’, Sara Butcher Jan 2022

Qu’Est Qu’Un Vrai Français : Le Front National Et Le Développement Contemporain Des Politiques De La ‘Francité’, Sara Butcher

Scripps Senior Theses

Let's Talk: An Analysis Of The Psychological And Emotional Impacts Of The Police Talk On Black Children, Kaila T. Glover Dodson

Scripps Senior Theses

The ‘Talk’ is a conversation (or series of conversations) that Black children receive from parents, grandparents, and other guardians and caretakers in their life. The conversation consists of informing them on behaviors to adopt as well as a script to recite should they encounter the police or any other agent of the law. Very little research has been done on the Talk yet alone the impact it has on Black children. Pulling from research on racial socialization, moral development, and the impact of racism on one’s well being, the purpose of this study is to explore how Black children are …

Opposing Effects Of Myzus Persicae-Induced Lipase 1 And Jasmonic Acid Influence The Outcome Of Arabidopsis Thaliana–Fusarium Graminearum Interaction, Syeda T. Alam, Sujon Sarowar, Hossain A. Mondal, Ragiba Makandar, Zulkarnain Chowdhury, Joe Louis, Jyoti Shah

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Fusarium graminearum (Fg) is an important fungal pathogen of small grain cereals that can also infect Arabidopsis thaliana. In Arabidopsis, jasmonic acid (JA) signalling involving JASMONATE RESISTANT 1 (JAR1), which synthesizes JA-isoleucine, a signalling form of JA, promotes susceptibility to Fg. Here we show that Arabidopsis MYZUS PERSICAE-INDUCED LIPASE 1 (MPL1), via its influence on limiting JA accumulation, restricts Fg infection. MPL1 expression was up-regulated in response to Fg infection, and MPL1-OE plants, which overexpress MPL1, exhibited enhanced resistance against Fg. In comparison, disease severity was higher on the mpl1 mutant than the wild type. JA content was …
