The Stadyn Programming Language, Francisco Ortin, Miguel Garcia, Baltasar Garcia Perez-Schofield, Jose Quiroga
Department of Mathematics Publications
Hybrid static and dynamic typing languages are aimed at combining the benefits of both kinds of languages: the early type error detection and compile-time optimizations of static typing, together with the runtime adaptability of dynamically typed languages. The StaDyn programming language is a hybrid typing language, whose main contribution is the utilization of the type information gathered by the compiler to improve compile-time error detection and runtime performance. StaDyn has been evaluated as the hybrid typing language for the .Net platform with the highest runtime performance and the lowest memory consumption. Although most optimizations are performed statically by the compiler, …
¿Dónde Están? Latin American Representation In Theatre For Young Audiences, Ximena Gonzalez Toledo
¿Dónde Están? Latin American Representation In Theatre For Young Audiences, Ximena Gonzalez Toledo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
¿Dónde están los Latinos? As a Latina theatre practitioner born and raised in Venezuela now studying Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) in the United States, I perceive a generalization and oversimplification of Latin American culture or culturally specific pieces across available TYA dramatic literature and other forms of children's entertainment, with Mexican culture as a monolith for all Hispanics and Latin Americans. My thesis asks: What tropes exist within the representation of Latin American cultures? What might those tropes offer about authentic representation, and opportunities for broadened representation, within the field of TYA? My research pulls from two formative experiences …

Designing The Electrochemical Interface To Enable Lithium Metal Batteries, Supriya Koul
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Although Li-ion battery is one of the most widely used energy storage devices, there have been extensive efforts to push its limit to meet the ever-increasing demands to improve its energy density for applications such as electric vehicles, portable electronics, and grid storages. Here, Li metal anode plays a key role in the next generation energy storage devices, ultimately enabling the anode-free configuration. However, there are major challenges that need to be overcome for a successful deployment of anode-free batteries. These include designing a competitive SEI, low Coulombic efficiency, and the formation of dendrites. To realize an effective anode-free configuration …
How Small Organic Osmolytes Modulate Actin Filament Assembly Kinetics And Mechanics, Pavlo Kravchuk
How Small Organic Osmolytes Modulate Actin Filament Assembly Kinetics And Mechanics, Pavlo Kravchuk
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Actin filament assembly and mechanics are crucial for muscle contraction, maintenance of cell structure, motility, and division. Actin filament assembly occurs in a crowded intracellular environment consisting of various types of molecules, including small organic molecules known as osmolytes. Ample evidence highlights the protective functions of osmolytes such as trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), including their effects on protein stability and their ability to counteract cellular osmotic stress. Recently, TMAO has been shown to counteract the denaturing effects of urea on actin filament assembly based on bulk fluorescence assays. Yet, how TMAO affects individual actin filament assembly dynamics and mechanics is not well …

Innovation Resistance? Understanding Officer Attitudes Toward Police Innovation, Justin Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Over the years, innovations such as community-oriented policing, problem-oriented policing, and crime analysis have helped police agencies control, reduce, and prevent crime and disorder, and improve police and community relations. However, research shows that some officers are resistant to using these innovations in practice. Few studies have examined the causal mechanisms behind innovation resistance. This doctoral dissertation details a study that utilized a mixed method approach to partially test a framework that encompassed two theories to explain officer resistance to innovation: The Model of Consumer Resistance to Innovation from the consumer psychology and marketing fields (Ram & Sheth, 1989), and …

The Concept Of The Populus Romanus In The Late Republic And Augustan Period, Nicklaus Bobertz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This study was undertaken to explore how the concept of the definition of Roman identity changed over the course of the late Roman Republic and into the early Empire culminating with the death of Augustus in 14 AD. Since the 1970's the historiography surrounding the late Roman Republic and early Empire has had to contend with what exactly the populus Romanus and its power basis was. From these questions concepts of power, gender, group formation, and even nationalism have emerged. However, few academics have targeted the nucleus that all of these questions revolve around, how did the identity of the …

During the 1920s, the Advisory Committee on the Traffic in Women, of the League of Nations operated as a legal regime in the transnationalization of criminal law. This can be seen in its management of the first >worldwide< investigation into the traffic in women which sent undercover investigators to more than a 100 countries across Europe, the Americas, and the Mediterranean. The Advisory Committee initiated >trafficking< as a transnational crime and advanced the understanding of transnational criminal law beyond concepts of professional criminality.
Race Car Aerodynamics Simulation And Transmitted Tire Reaction Forces, Mark T.J. Lin, Periklis Papadopoulos
Race Car Aerodynamics Simulation And Transmitted Tire Reaction Forces, Mark T.J. Lin, Periklis Papadopoulos
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Often in Computational Fluid Dynamics integral forces and restoring moments are calculated, but the location where they should be applied may not always be clear. This is because the location is not intuitive: it is dependent on the vehicle’s velocity and its orientation (e.g. sideslip angle). A technique has been developed to translate the aerodynamic forces to the reaction forces on the vehicle’s tires. In this study, CFD simulation is performed with a 7.5° yaw to look at the effect of cornering. To understand aerodynamic effect on vehicle dynamics one must know the location at which this force is applied. …

Closed-loop Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) based on physiological feedback signals is a promising approach to regulate organ functions and develop therapeutic devices. Designing closed-loop neurostimulation systems requires simulation environments and computing infrastructures that support i) modeling the physiological responses of organs under neuromodulation, also known as physiological models, and ii) the interaction between the physiological models and the neuromodulation control algorithms. However, existing simulation platforms do not support closed-loop VNS control systems modeling without extensive rewriting of computer code and manual deployment and configuration of programs. The CONTROL-CORE project aims to develop a flexible software platform for designing and implementing …

Deep learning-based intrusion detection systems have advanced due to their technological innovations such as high accuracy, automation, and scalability to develop an effective network intrusion detection system (NIDS). However, most of the previous research has focused on model generation through intensive analysis of feature engineering instead of considering real environments. They have limitations to applying the previous methods for a real network environment to detect real-time network attacks. In this paper, we propose a new flexible and robust NIDS based on Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) with a multi-classifier to generate a detection model in real time. The proposed system adaptively …

It is important to comprehend the attacker's behavior and capacity in order to build a stronger fortress and thus be able to protect valuable assets more effectively. Prior to launching technical and physical attacks, an attacker may enter the reconnaissance stage and gather sensitive information. To collect such valuable data, one of the most effective approaches is through conducting social engineering attacks, borrowing techniques from deception theory. As a result, it is of utmost importance to understand when an attacker behaves truthfully and when the attacker opts to be deceitful. This paper models attacker's states using the Markov Decision Process …

Malicious applications are usually comprehended through two major techniques, namely static and dynamic analyses. Through static analysis, a given malicious program is parsed, and some representative artifacts (e.g., control-flow graphs) are produced without any execution; whereas, the given malicious application needs to be executed when conducting dynamic analysis. These two mainstream techniques for analyzing the given software are effective in detecting certain classes of malware. More specifically, through static analysis, the patterns and signature of the malware are exposed, helping in detecting any known malicious payload hidden in or injected into the code. On the other hand, behavioral and run-time …

Let A be a nontrivial abelian group. A connected simple graph G = (V, E) is A-antimagic if there exists an edge labeling f : E(G) → A \ {0} such that the induced vertex labeling f+ : V (G) → A, defined by f+(v) = Σ {f(u, v): (u, v) ∈ E(G)}, is a one-to-one map. In this paper, we analyze the group-antimagic property for Cartesian products, hexagonal nets and theta graphs.

Network failures are unavoidable and occur frequently. When the network fails, intra-domain routing protocols deploying on the Internet need to undergo a long convergence process. During this period, a large number of messages are discarded, which results in a decline in the user experience and severely affects the quality of service of Internet Service Providers (ISP). Therefore, improving the availability of intra-domain routing is a trending research question to be solved. Industry usually employs routing protection algorithms to improve intra-domain routing availability. However, existing routing protection schemes compute as many backup paths as possible to reduce message loss due to …
