Expanded Umbilical Cord Blood Transplantation In Cerebral X-Linked Adrenoleukodystrophy: A Case Report, Rachel E Granberg, Thomas Pfeiffer, Sanil Sansar, Rafael Galindo, Shalini Shenoy
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Umbilical cord blood transplantation is a viable source of stem cells due to accessibility and low incidence of chronic graft-versus-host disease despite human-leukocyte-antigen mismatching. Disadvantages of low stem cell dose in larger recipients include delayed immune reconstitution, graft rejection, and mortality. Successful transplants with ex-vivo expanded cords resulted in approval in malignant disorders and aplastic anemia. We report the first successful expanded cord transplantation in an adolescent with cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy who had no alternative donor/treatment options and required transplant emergently for neurologic preservation. This report highlights a mechanism for timely transplant in metabolic disorders, and preservation of functional advantages despite …
Deflation-Based Preconditioning For Parallel Time Stepping Algorithms, Marina Nacianceno, Josef A. Sifuentes
Deflation-Based Preconditioning For Parallel Time Stepping Algorithms, Marina Nacianceno, Josef A. Sifuentes
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
Often, in solving large systems of differential equations using a time-stepping algorithm, one must solve multiple linear systems where the coefficient matrix is unchanged or shifted by a constant multiple of the identity. This can be computationally expensive when the coefficient matrix involved is very large. Where direct methods like Gaussian elimination are infeasible, iterative methods like GMRES are often used. It is especially useful when the matrices involved are sparse or allow for fast matrix multiplication algorithms. In this paper, we propose preconditioning strategies that glean information from previous runs of GMRES to build an effective preconditioner for subsequent …

Student Perceptions Of Artificial Intelligence-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Material: A Qualitative Content Analysis, Paige Horton, Amanda Isabel Osuna
Student Perceptions Of Artificial Intelligence-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Material: A Qualitative Content Analysis, Paige Horton, Amanda Isabel Osuna
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI), especially generative AI and deepfake technology, has introduced new challenges in the production and dissemination of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). While existing research has examined the technological and legal implications of AI-generated child sexual abuse material, less is known about how the public, especially young adults who are most likely to use AI technologies, perceive these developments. The present study addresses this gap by examining undergraduate student perceptions of AI-generated child sexual abuse material at a medium-sized private university in the Southeastern United States. Using data from a Qualtrics survey, this study …
Spirituality And Resilience Among Survivors Of Child Sex Trafficking: A Ten-Year Longitudinal Study In Cambodia, Glenn M. Miles, Lim Vanntheary, Nhanh Chantha
Spirituality And Resilience Among Survivors Of Child Sex Trafficking: A Ten-Year Longitudinal Study In Cambodia, Glenn M. Miles, Lim Vanntheary, Nhanh Chantha
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
Sex trafficking causes profound trauma requiring comprehensive healing. While spirituality is central in many survivors’ lives, it remains under-researched. In Cambodia, Christian organisations provide most aftercare despite 93-97% Buddhist population, creating complex religious dynamics. This study examined how spirituality affects trauma recovery, the factors that support or hinder spiritual practice, and how religious identity is negotiated over time. Butterfly Longitudinal Research project followed 128 sex trafficking survivors (80% female, 20% male, ages 6-30 at baseline) in Christian-founded aftercare programs throughout Cambodia, beginning 2010. A mixed-methods longitudinal design employed structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews 2-3 times annually over 10 years, …

Identity Through Violence: Collective Integration And Symbolic Self-Completion Across Extremist, Cartel, And Non-Ideological Mass Violence, Amanda N. Moeller, Abi K. Leyden, Isaac J. Moelter, Erin Johnson, Gina Scott Ligon, Samuel Hunter
Reports, Projects, and Research
Formal organizational membership alone can obscure perpetrators’ connections to broader violent communities. Drawing on Symbolic Self-Completion Theory, we examine how collective integration relates to the ways attacks communicate identity, affiliation, and meaning. We analyzed 102 mass violence incidents spanning U.S. domestic violent extremism, foreign and foreign-inspired terrorism in the United States, non-ideological mass violence in the United States, and cartel violence in Mexico. Our framework distinguishes five levels of integration, from no documented collective connection to formal membership. Incidents involving any collective connection contained more symbolic content and used more communicative channels than those without one. Loosely integrated perpetrators incorporated …

Objective: STXBP1-related disorder (STXBP1-RD) and SYNGAP1-related disorder (SYNGAP1-RD) are two common genetic synaptopathies that are associated with epilepsy, developmental delay, intellectual developmental disorder, and behavioral problems. Both STXBP1-RD and SYNGAP1-RD are potential targets for disease-modifying therapies, but there is limited information in the literature describing the natural history of either disorder, which impedes outcome selection for future clinical trials. The objective of this study is to develop a framework to better define and outline the clinical spectrum and longitudinal trajectories of STXBP1-RD and SYNGAP1-RD natural history, including development, behavior, seizure histories, and electrophysiology.

Beyond Satisfaction: Predictors And Correlates Of Marital Health, Erin C. Smalley
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
This quantitative, nonexperimental, cross-sectional study evaluated factors associated with and predictive of marital health. Marital health was identified as a more holistic evaluator of marital connection and commitment, moving beyond individual satisfaction. The original sample was taken from the archived Marriage Health in America survey data. The sample included 3,808 United States adults. Participants completed a marital satisfaction index and a marital health measure, while simultaneously ranking 32 identified factors of marital health. The results found that love for each other was the strongest predictor of marital health, followed by communication through listening, respect, trust, and sexual intimacy. These findings …
Guided By Innovation: A Phenomenological Study Of Virtual Elementary Teachers’ Perceptions Of Generative Artificial Intelligence Integration, Lisa M. Berry
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of elementary virtual teachers who integrate generative artificial intelligence (GAI) tools in their pedagogical practices at a large elementary virtual school. Participants were purposively sampled because those in the specified virtual school program provided relevant, experience-based insights and allowed the researcher practical, feasible access (Creswell & Poth, 2018). The participant sample for this study consisted of virtual elementary teachers who taught students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The researcher conducted semi-structured interviews with 10 teachers. The researcher followed Creswell and Poth’s (2018) data analysis spiral to systematically …

Optimal crisis management depends on how much the public can tolerate stringent measures. Using large-scale Weibo microblog data and two sentiment analysis models, this study investigated and compared public sentiment responses during the COVID-19 lockdowns in Wuhan and Shanghai, focusing on how residents’ emotional expressions evolved across different stages of the pandemic. Binary and six-emotion sentiment analysis models based on bidirectional encoder repre-sentations from transformers (BERT) were employed to examine how the two cities developed distinct emotional trajectories. Emotional responses in Wuhan followed emotional Phases of Disaster, with sharp tran-sitions from shock to solidarity, followed by disillusion-ment. Conversely, Shanghai’s residents …
Operationalising Equity In Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management, Riley Bibaud, Tom Mullier, Matthew Ashley, Holly Niner, Lauren Stewart, Siân Rees
Operationalising Equity In Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management, Riley Bibaud, Tom Mullier, Matthew Ashley, Holly Niner, Lauren Stewart, Siân Rees
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Equity is increasingly recognised as a critical dimension of sustainable ocean governance, yet operational frameworks for incorporating equity considerations into marine governance remain limited. Fisheries management practices have traditionally concentrated on stock sustainability and commercial extraction, often without fully addressing the broader ecosystem dynamics that underpin fish populations throughout key life stages. This study explores how Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management (EBFM) can support more equitable outcomes by applying a beneficiary-centric natural capital framework to the Celtic Sea and Western Channel Pelagic Fisheries Management Plan. A typology of beneficiaries was developed to assess the distribution of ecosystem service benefits, followed by a …

The archaeal symbiotic have been isolated with their hosts from a shallow hot marine vent off Iceland and from terrestrial hot springs in Yellowstone National Park and Japan. They have highly reduced genomes and rely on their archaeal hosts for most of their metabolic needs. Here, to provide further insights into the ecology and evolution of this order, we greatly expand their phylogenomic distribution using metagenome-assembled genomes from deep-sea hydrothermal vents in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, and the Gulf of California. We show that at least 11 novel genus-level lineages occur at deep-sea vents. We conservatively propose two …

Spatial variation in the magnitude and pace of climate change impacts means some species will be more affected than others. This includes those occurring within global biodiversity hotspots, regions with exceptional concentrations of endemic species that have often been shaped by long-term climatic stability. Disproportionate levels of human-induced pressure in these areas are threatening much of the biodiversity values that make these biodiversity hotspots exceptional. Southwest Western Australia is a highly fragmented temperate biodiversity hotspot experiencing rapid climate change and supporting many species of threatened mammals. One Critically Endangered arboreal folivore, the western ringtail possum (ngwayir; Pseudocheirus occidentalis), has contracted …

In a commentary, SMU Assistant Professor of Psychology Kenneth Tan said GovTech’s FirstDate could lower the “search costs” of finding a compatible partner, especially for time-starved Singaporeans. Shared professional backgrounds can create common ground through similar norms, pressures and values, fostering a “shared reality”. However, he stressed that this does not guarantee compatibility, which depends more on how couples handle conflict and align on family life

Social Distancing Under Strategic Uncertainty: The Role Of Strategic Sophistication In The Covid-19 Pandemic, Mimi Jeon, Seonghoon Kim, Kanghyock Koh, Euncheol Shin
Research Collection School Of Economics
This study examines how individuals’ strategic sophistication shapes social distancing during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, when distancing was a costly protective decision under two sources of risk: the private risk of infection and strategic uncertainty about whether others would comply. We develop a weakest-link public goods game with private costs of social distancing, in which agents differ in their level-k depth of reasoning about others. The model predicts that the probability of distancing rises with the level-k type when baseline compliance is low. We test this prediction using large-scale, nationally representative survey data that include incentivized experiments …

Problem definition: A significant portion of the food loss in agricultural supply chains occurs at the farm level and has been linked to high cosmetic standards adopted by retailers regarding the size, color, and shape of the produce. We examine the economic incentives for retailers to adopt such high standards and their impact on food loss. Methodology/results: We build a sequential game between a retailer and a farmer, where the retailer signs a contract with the farmer, specifying a cosmetic standard as well as the wholesale price and contract volume. Setting a high standard allows the retailer to sell the …

This review article is an assessment of the most recent translation of Marx’s Capital, Volume I into English, edited by Paul Reitter and Paul North and published by Princeton University Press. Since the authors of the article do not speak German, the main focus is not on the quality of the translation, but on the theoretical and ideological tendencies revealed by this edition, although there is a more technical section at the end that deals with the preferred terminology, the choice of edition, and the Index. The glaring problem with this edition is the fact that the younger generation is …

When Going Alone Feels Right: The Effect Of Solo Cues On Interest In Attending Cultural Events, Inyoung Lee, Sang-Hoon Kim
Asia Marketing Journal
With the rise of solo consumers, cultural event marketers face a challenge: how can events appeal to solo consumers without marginalizing group consumers? To address this question, the impact of solo cues in marketing communication is examined through the lens of role and script theory. Two experiments demonstrate that solo cues, which signal the inclusion of solo consumers among attendees, increase solo consumers' attendance interest but do not affect group consumers.
