Machine Learning For Elderly Behavior And Risk Incident Modeling, Muhammad Tanveer Jan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The rapid expansion of the aging population presents critical challenges to healthcare systems, particularly in maintaining independent living, ensuring mobility safety, and optimizing emergency interventions. Traditional monitoring solutions are often fragmented, reactive, and hindered by the scarcity of data regarding rare high-risk events. This dissertation proposes a comprehensive, multi-modal machine learning framework designed to model elderly behavior and predict risk incidents across three critical environments: the home, the vehicle, and the clinical setting.

To address the fundamental challenge of class imbalance in medical and behavioral datasets—where risk events are statistically rare—this research first introduces a dual-phase data augmentation strategy. By …

Making Sense Of And Responding To The Good And Bad Within Psychology: Common Grace And Antithesis As Tools For Psychology, Tyler Greenway, Cory B. Wilson

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

As psychologists and students of psychology make sense of and respond to the good and bad within human behavior and its study, theological tools benefit their discernment. This paper presents two Neocalvinist theological concepts — common grace and antithesis — as tools for psychologists. These concepts help psychologists recognize God’s common gifts to humanity while also identifying what must be corrected. Such applications benefit psychologists in clinical cases and as they consider theoretical frameworks. When used together, these tools encourage us to anticipate both the true, good, and beautiful things in the world and the need at times for redirection. …

Computational Repurposing And Experimental Validation Of Ybx1 Inhibitors In Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Omar Karkoutly, Veerababu Nagati, Subhash Chauhan, Manish Tripathi

School of Medicine Publications

Background/Objectives: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of liver cancer worldwide. While early-stage HCC can often be treated with surgical resection, ablation, or liver transplantation, advanced disease typically relies on systemic chemotherapy. Sorafenib is the standard first-line therapy for advanced and unresectable HCC; however, both intrinsic and acquired resistance remain major clinical challenges. The Y-box binding protein-1 (YBX1), a transcription factor implicated in drug resistance across multiple cancers, is highly expressed in HCC and represents a potential therapeutic target. This study aimed to identify novel YBX1 inhibitors using a drug repurposing strategy to overcome sorafenib resistance. Methods: A …

Amazon rainforests face intensifying water stress due to increases in vapour pressure deficit and changing hydrological regimes. Embolism resistance (Ψ50) is a critical metric of tree survival under drought conditions, it is defined as a plant’s capacity to resist disruption of xylem water flow due to air bubble formation from water stress. However, measurements of Ψ50 are only available for a limited number of Amazon locations and species. Conversely, data on forest taxonomic composition are abundant across Amazonia, and if Ψ50 is conserved phylogenetically, these data could provide a way to scale-up drought resistance patterns. Here …

Meeting The Challenge Of Civic Education In Hyperpolarized Times, Linda C. Mcclain Feb 2026

Meeting The Challenge Of Civic Education In Hyperpolarized Times, Linda C. Mcclain

Faculty Scholarship

What role can civic education play in polarized times? That is the pressing question posed by Civic Education in Polarized Times, edited by Elizabeth Beaumont and Eric Beerbohm.1 As Beaumont’s introduction explains, “as political polarization has intensified across the world, civic education seems more urgent, but it has also become more challenging.” (P. 1.) The volume brings together an eminent group of education scholars, legal scholars, political theorists, and philosophers to consider challenging questions about how to carry out civic education “in a polarized era” and “for a polarized era.” (P. 2.)

Amicus Brief In Trump V. Barbara: An Originalist Defense Of Birthright Citizenship, Jed Handelsman Shugerman, Evan D. Bernick

Faculty Scholarship

For nearly all of the first 235 years under the Constitution, the citizenship of every child born in the United States to alien parents, with immaterial exceptions, was a given. Then, in 2025, the Trump administration changed course. Even though the Fourteenth Amendment makes no mention of limiting birthright citizenship to the children of domiciled parents, the Government now claims that is what “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” has always meant. While the Government and its amici admit that the common law recognized the citizenship of children of transient aliens, their remaining “survey of history range[s] from the constitutionally irrelevant” …

HIV infection remains a major global health challenge due to its complex pathogenesis and lifelong persistence in people living with HIV (PLWH). A central barrier to eradication is the virus's ability to establish long-lived latent reservoirs in different tissues, including the central nervous system (CNS), where it evades immune clearance and antiretroviral therapy (ART). These reservoirs, seeded early during infection, fuel viral rebound if ART is interrupted, requiring lifelong treatment. In the CNS, HIV persists despite systemic viral suppression because of limited ART penetration across the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and infection of long-lived cells such as microglia and perivascular macrophages. …

Structural and social determinants of health are environmental conditions that affect individuals' health and functioning across the life course. These determinants are salient factors at the apex of individual psychology, community variables, and larger sociological factors, exerting prominent effects on individuals' wellbeing. The National Institute on Aging seeks to understand their influence on aging and Alzheimer's disease. We propose that the benefits of doing so may reach beyond knowledge of disease mechanisms - it may also improve clinical outcomes. We describe efforts introducing structural and social determinants of health data into the national network of Alzheimer's disease research centers. We …

Links between cancerous and noncancerous brain tumors and epilepsy have long been recognized. However, recent clinical and preclinical studies emphasize that not only do tumors impinge on surrounding brain tissue in ways that promote hyperexcitability and epileptogenesis, but that neural activity also influences tumor progression. In this review, inspired by the Merritt-Putnam Symposium of the 2025 meeting of the American Epilepsy Society, we present a cross-disciplinary dialog between cancer and epilepsy research, including discussion of tumors and epilepsies that are more prominent in pediatric versus adult populations. First, we discuss the neuropathology, genetics, and surgical outcomes of epileptogenic brain tumors, …

Stress signaling is important for determining the fates of neurons following axonal insults. Previously, we showed that the stress-responsive kinase PERK contributes to injury-induced neurodegeneration (Larhammar et al., 2017). Here, we show that PERK acts primarily through activating transcription factor-4 (ATF4) to stimulate not only pro-apoptotic but also pro-regenerative responses following optic nerve damage. Using conditional knockout mice, we find an extensive PERK/ATF4-dependent transcriptional response that includes canonical ATF4 target genes and modest contributions by C/EBP Homologous Protein (CHOP). Overlap with c-Jun-dependent transcription suggests interplay with a parallel stress pathway that orchestrates regenerative and apoptotic responses. Accordingly, neuronal knockout of …
