Jacksonville Before Consolidation, James B. Crooks Mar 2022

Jacksonville Before Consolidation, James B. Crooks

Florida Historical Quarterly

At the inauguration of the new Jacksonville city-county consolidated government in October 1968, Local Government Study Commission Chairman James Jacqueline Daniel wrote that “Jacksonville had experienced a political renaissance.” Ten years later, Jacksonville mayor Hans Tanzler declared that consolidated government was “the salvation” of the city. In 1993, at the twenty-fifth anniversary celebration of consolidated government, then-Mayor Ed Austin called for rekindling “the spirit that drove the consolidation effort . . . because our form of government is the envy of cities around the world.” Tanzler, chairing that celebratory occasion, agreed, adding, “[c]onsolidation has been described as Jacksonville’s ‘Greatest Moment.’“

Review Essay:--Florida's Heritage Of Diversity: Essays In Honor Of Samuel Proctor, James B. Crooks

Florida Historical Quarterly

It is appropriate that this volume stresses Florida’s heritage of diversity because Samuel Proctor in his many contributions to this state’s history explored, wrote, taught, edited, and celebrated its rich variety of people and institutions. During his fifty-plus-year relationship with the University of Florida and his thirty years editing the Florida Historical Quarterly, Proctor nurtured research and edited histories of Native Americans, African Americans, immigrants, women, Jews, and other Floridians ranging from poor crackers to millionaire businessmen. Proctor also pioneered the use of oral history in this region, edited twenty-five facsimile volumes of rare books on Florida for the Florida …

The First Seminole War, November 21, 1817-May 24, 1818, John K. Mahon Mar 2022

The First Seminole War, November 21, 1817-May 24, 1818, John K. Mahon

Florida Historical Quarterly

The North American Southeast remained a wild borderland where Indian tribes, the United States, Spain, and Great Britain competed fiercely for supremacy. After the War of 1812 Spain kept a tenuous hold on Florida; however, Spanish authorities could not enforce peace on the border and were unable to prevent black slaves from fleeing to Florida and joining the Seminole Indians. Seen from Washington the peninsula was a natural appendage to the United States, and James Monroe’s administration hankered to possess it.

Seeking The Sweet Spirit Of Harmony: Establishing A Spiritualist Community At Cassadaga, Florida, 1893-1933, John J. Guthrie, Jr. Mar 2022

Seeking The Sweet Spirit Of Harmony: Establishing A Spiritualist Community At Cassadaga, Florida, 1893-1933, John J. Guthrie, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

In March of 1899, a prominent Spiritualist from Amelia, Ohio, J. Clegg Wright, sent a letter to a medium residing in Cassadaga, Florida. Wright informed Emma J. Huff that he planned to attend the following year’s Spiritualist convention in the Sunshine State. Congratulating her for having a “fairly good meeting this year,” he added: “It must be a hard region in which to sow the seed of progressive thought. The South Land is behind. It is cursed by the heel of old religion— a monstrous tyrant. He puts the eyes out of all his subjects.“1 Wright’s letter reveals much about …

The Beginnings Of Big Sugar In Florida, 1920-1945, John A. Heitmann Mar 2022

The Beginnings Of Big Sugar In Florida, 1920-1945, John A. Heitmann

Florida Historical Quarterly

During the past several years, the Florida sugar industry has been under the journalist’s microscope and scrutinized as no other agricultural enterprise in America. If we are to believe the evidence presented in Alec Wilkinson’s Big Sugar, or essays written over the past decade that appeared in Forbes, George, the Nation, and Florida Trend, one must conclude that Florida sugar interests are economically privileged and politically powerful, ruthlessly exploitative towards labor, and, to top it off, largely responsible for the environmental degradation of the Everglades.1 During the 1980s the focus of the attack centered on the industry’s use of imported …

Equity And Open Education Cohort Model For Faculty And Teaching And Learning Support, Amy R. Hofer, Jen Klaudinyi Mar 2022

Equity And Open Education Cohort Model For Faculty And Teaching And Learning Support, Amy R. Hofer, Jen Klaudinyi

Online Northwest

This session will describe the Equity and Open Education Faculty Cohort professional development course, originally designed by Jen Klaudinyi at Portland Community College, and scaled statewide in collaboration with Open Oregon Educational Resources. A new version of the course aimed at participants in support roles, such as librarians, instructional designers, accessibility services, will launch in Spring 22. The central insight of the course is that faculty often assume that their course is more equitable when they adopt affordable materials, but an open license does not ensure an equity lens, including universal design, cultural relevance, and diverse perspectives.

Developing Digital Stewardship Training: Reflections From A Collaborative Project To Strengthen Staff Skills, Dale Musselman, Lotus Norton-Wisla Mar 2022

Developing Digital Stewardship Training: Reflections From A Collaborative Project To Strengthen Staff Skills, Dale Musselman, Lotus Norton-Wisla

Online Northwest

We will discuss an IMLS-funded project to develop online digital stewardship training for staff of tribal archives, libraries, museums, and small public libraries, adapted from curriculum from WSU’s Center for Digital Scholarship and Curation.

The project team considered prevalent notions of openness and neutrality, and reflected on how practices around digitization, discovery, and access may perpetuate dispossession and erasure of traditional knowledge. We encourage learners to incorporate responsible, ethical approaches when collaborating with others and including diverse cultural heritage materials in their digital collections.

We will share relevant learnings from the project, courses, and the work of the CDSC.

Using The Web Of Science To Create A Retrospective Faculty Scholarship Collection, Maura Valentino, Daniel Levy

Online Northwest

While faculty often understand the benefits of publishing in an institutional repository, they often cannot find the time or feel too technically overwhelmed to upload their articles. At Central Washington University we used the Web of Science to locate articles published by faculty and uploaded those articles into the IR. This has resulted in a nearly complete collection of the Scholarship created by CWU faculty.

Learn-Static: Innovative Digital Humanities Pedagogy With Static Web Technologies, Olivia Wikle, Evan Williamson, Kate Thornhill, Gabriele Hayden

Online Northwest

Static web technologies offer an exciting opportunity for Digital Humanities instructors to incorporate transferable digital literacy skills into the classroom, while producing low-cost, low-maintenance web projects that are sustainable even for institutions with limited resources. These tools spur students to learn transferable data management and digital literacy skills, and their open nature strengthens instructors' control over classroom web projects. This presentation will introduce the NEH-funded Learn-STATIC initiative, which aims to make static web technologies more accessible for students and instructors alike through open-source learning sequences that contain reusable code stored in GitHub repositories, example lesson plans, and documentation.

Symposium: Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, & The Constitution: Suspect Classifications, Immutability, And Moral Responsibility, Michael Gentithes Mar 2022

Symposium: Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, & The Constitution: Suspect Classifications, Immutability, And Moral Responsibility, Michael Gentithes

ConLawNOW

This essay argues that when LGBTQ advocates raise equal protection arguments, they should resist the temptation to make immutability claims. Instead, they should acknowledge greater flexibility in the continuum of sexual orientation and gender identity, thereby avoiding traditional and binary immutability theory, and emphasize the lack of moral responsibility as a ground for strict scrutiny. Such arguments offer more traction for future cases rather than repeated efforts to suggest that sexuality is biologically determined or unalterable. This approach shifts the legal focus to the moral responsibility logic that lies behind traditional immutability theory, which may ultimately be more persuasive to …

Keynote: Oer|Edi + Social Justice On Your College Campus, Angelique Carson

Online Northwest

In her keynote address, Angelique Carson, Shared Collections Librarian at Washington Research Library Consortium, acknowledges that it is a crucial time for Open Educational Resources (OER) and conveys the belief that we cannot meaningfully discuss Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) topics within higher education without including OER. In fact, she emphasizes the importance of centering OER within EDI efforts. She goes on to share inspiring and creative examples of how academic librarians, information specialists, and educators are addressing and advocating for EDI concerns with OER material on their campuses.

Bi Design: Strategies For Fiction, Audrey T. Heffers Mar 2022

Bi Design: Strategies For Fiction, Audrey T. Heffers

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

How can bisexuality be represented in fiction in a way that is realistic and nuanced? This article presents five strategies of representing bisexuality in fiction, listed here as Implying, Demonstrating, Describing, Using Explicit Labels, and Having Conversations. These practical approaches highlight craft techniques that writers can implement in their own work. By articulating some of the ways in which bisexuality is already written in fiction, these strategies provide tools for writers to write bisexuality in ways that work against common stereotypes. These strategies are presented through an interdisciplinary lens, primarily relying upon Creative Writing Studies, …

Setting The Scene For Community-Based Learning: Creative Writing As A Platform For Inquiry And Integrative Learning, Adam Watkins Mar 2022

Setting The Scene For Community-Based Learning: Creative Writing As A Platform For Inquiry And Integrative Learning, Adam Watkins

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

Creative writing pedagogy has received a surge of critical interest of late, though much remains to be said about its capacity to support trans-disciplinary learning outcomes, such as those related to community-based learning. Through an assessment of a place-based course focused on community-based learning, this article provides evidence that creative writing assignments can be an effective learning tool for cultivating community engagement and intercultural competencies. The educational value of creative writing, this study shows, has much to do with its unique mode of inquiry, which is well suited for integrating diverse perspectives, multi-modal research, and multiple ways of knowing.

The Application Of Physics Informed Neural Networks To Compositional Modeling, Thelma A. Ihunde Mar 2022

The Application Of Physics Informed Neural Networks To Compositional Modeling, Thelma A. Ihunde

LSU Master's Theses

Compositional modeling is essential when simulating processes involving significant changes in reservoir fluid composition. It is computationally expensive because we typically need to predict the states and properties of multicomponent fluid mixtures at several different points in space and time. To speed up this process, several researchers have used machine learning algorithms to train deep learning (DL) models on data from the rigorous phase-equilibrium (flash) calculations. However, one shortcoming of the DL models is that there is no explicit consideration for the governing physics. So, there is no guarantee that the model predictions will honor the thermodynamical constraints of phase …
