Structural Conditions And Migration In The Dakotas, Joshua J. Turner, W. Trevor Brooks, Donald E. Arwood Feb 2022

Structural Conditions And Migration In The Dakotas, Joshua J. Turner, W. Trevor Brooks, Donald E. Arwood

Great Plains Sociologist

This study examines the influence of selected structural conditions on the county-level net-migration trends of North Dakota and South Dakota. Key principles from Lee’s Theory of Migration (1966) and Wallerstein’s World Systems model (1974) were integrated to explain how geographic context, economic dependency, and pace of economic development combine to serve as the main catalysts behind the migration patterns in these two states. Results indicate that commuting patterns, the percentage of workers employed in extractive industries, the percentage of workers employed in manufacturing, and job change rates were significant predictors of county migration patterns.

Using Client And Supervision Feedback To Improve Supervision In Health Care, Daryl Mahon Ba, Ma Feb 2022

Using Client And Supervision Feedback To Improve Supervision In Health Care, Daryl Mahon Ba, Ma

Counseling and Family Therapy Scholarship Review

This paper seeks to establish a conceptual model of client and supervisee feedback that can be used to improve supervision processes and outcomes in health and social care settings. Supervision is a beneficial practice development endeavor that practitioners find rewarding for various reasons. However, the impact of supervision on client outcomes in health and social care settings is scant and not all supervision is helpful; indeed, harmful and inadequate supervision is also prevalent. Using supervisory measures of the alliance between supervisor and supervisee may be one method to help improve processes and outcomes. In addition, providing client feedback to practitioners …

An Exploratory Study Of Job Satisfaction Among Mail Handlers And Sorters In A Package-Delivery Organization, A. Olu Oyinlade, Carla Garay

Great Plains Sociologist

This is an exploratory study of the correlates and predictors of job satisfaction among mail handlers and sorters, in a package-delivery organization, used as case study. Job satisfaction has been widely studied, but most studies have largely neglected manual laborers. This study is a shift from traditional research participants (health care providers, the military, scientists) of job satisfaction studies to manual workers. A research framework consisting of a theoretical and a demographic model was used to establish correlates and predictors of job satisfaction. Findings of correlation analyses and three regression models (used for triangulation) showed that ten variables were correlated …

Historical Perspectives On Affirmative Action, Diversity And Multiculturalism In United States Higher Education, Kebba Darboe Feb 2022

Historical Perspectives On Affirmative Action, Diversity And Multiculturalism In United States Higher Education, Kebba Darboe

Great Plains Sociologist

This paper examines the historical perspectives on affirmative action, diversity and multiculturalism in United States Higher Education. Affirmative action is a legal program that ensures that qualified and historically underrepresented groups, especially African Americans and women, are given preference in the hiring, promotion, and admission in colleges and universities. By contrast, diversity and multiculturalism are social constructions of reality. Diversity is an inclusion process designed to foster an environment where talents, uniqueness and differences of all people are respected and valued in schools or workplace situations. Multiculturalism is a movement that insists that American society has never been white, but …

Harvest Timing And Moisture Determination: Forage Drying Rates And Moisture Probe Accuracy, Benjamin M. Conner, Jimmy C. Henning Feb 2022

Harvest Timing And Moisture Determination: Forage Drying Rates And Moisture Probe Accuracy, Benjamin M. Conner, Jimmy C. Henning

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Scott County Kentucky currently has a beef cattle herd of 28,509 head (USDA, 2017). These cattle utilize forage as a large part of their diets. Baleage is bales of wilted, high moisture forage which have been wrapped in several layers of UV‐resistant plastic and allowed to ensile like traditional chopped silage (Henning et al., 2021). Baleage has become another way for farmers to harvest and store forage to be used in cattle diets. It has some advantages over the traditional hay production in Kentucky. One advantage is it can be harvested, baled, and stored in a shorter period of time, …

Species And Variety Options For Baleage, S. Ray Smith Feb 2022

Species And Variety Options For Baleage, S. Ray Smith

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Any forage species can be made into baleage or silage. While baleage is a form of silage, I’m defining it here as baled forage (typically round bales) that is wrapped in plastic (individually or in a line) for the ensiling process to take place. And silage is typically chopped forage that is ensiled in an upright or bunker silo or blown into a silage tube. The chopping mixes all the material together and allows tight packing to remove oxygen therefore encouraging faster fermentation. With baleage there is no chopping to mix the forage, so it’s essential that the forage is …

Infusing Covid-19 Into An Undergraduate Parasitology Research Course, Alexa Von Dohlen Feb 2022

Infusing Covid-19 Into An Undergraduate Parasitology Research Course, Alexa Von Dohlen

SoTL Commons Conference

The COVID-19 pandemic is a global event that has impacted both how and what educators teach. An unexpected outcome of the pandemic was the ability to enhance student understanding of public health through discussion of the novel coronavirus. Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CURE) provide students with authentic research experiences in the framework of an undergraduate course. Here the reconfiguration of the Parasitology Research course as an online CURE is discussed. This course included curriculum focused not only on parasite diagnostics, but also how it relates to diagnosing COVID-19 with the aim of helping students become scientifically prepared citizens.

Public Health Sotl: From Anecdote To Data, Katie M. Mercer, Kelly Sullivan Feb 2022

Public Health Sotl: From Anecdote To Data, Katie M. Mercer, Kelly Sullivan

SoTL Commons Conference

Challenges related to teaching and learning are often discussed among faculty. Student input is often sparse and subject to volunteer bias, resulting in feedback that is likely not representative. Furthermore, there is also anecdotal evidence that public health faculty have strong views regarding teaching and learning topics, particularly when it comes to online instruction for courses with rigorous methodologic or analytic content, and there are concerns student performance may differ based on course modality. In an effort to draw evidence-based conclusions based on non-anecdotal data, a public health student and faculty dataset creation and analysis model is explored.

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced various life orders to change, activities that are usually done manually have turned into digital-based ones. National Libraries in Southeast Asia have an important role in providing relevant and factual information to avoid inappropriate information. The existence of the pandemic has hampered access to libraries. This has encouraged the national library to maximize the use of social media, especially Instagram as a forum for promotion and service extensions so that the public still gets the information and knowledge they need. This study discusses the use of Instagram by the three National Libraries namely Indonesia, Malaysia, …

The Road To Affordable Housing: How To Replace Highways With Homes In New York City, Chad Hughes Feb 2022

The Road To Affordable Housing: How To Replace Highways With Homes In New York City, Chad Hughes

Pace Law Review

Urban highways cause significant air, water, and soil pollution that disproportionately harm low-income and nonwhite residents. Many urban highways are reaching the end of their useful life and would be extremely expensive to repair or replace. Cities around the world have removed urban highways to improve environmental outcomes and to avoid wasteful spending.

While these teardowns have improved local and regional environmental quality and local traffic congestion, they have also led to increased land values near the retired rights of way. Without anti-displacement efforts, there is a risk that the very people who have been most harmed by urban highways …
