Switzerland's widely divergent geography and many cultures allow the music educators of the country to exchange ideas with their neighbors while preserving rich local traditions. In this article, the author interviews the directors of the divisions of the Musik-Akademie der Stadt Basel. The directors, in discussing their education, music, and aspirations, together represent the nationalistic mix as well as the spirit of cooperation that is characteristic of Switzerland.

Most of Malaysian music education remains strongly influenced by the colonial legacy of the British, but many changes are occurring as more and more Malaysian music educators trained in America and elsewhere begin to update the formal music education process.

Formal music education in Nigeria, which began in the late nineteenth century, is not yet recognized as an important subject to be studied in the public schools of the nation. Music educators throughout the country are working to establish music education in the schools, incorporate indigenous music forms into the study of music, and improve the training of classroom and specialist music teachers. While there is much work to be done, a good deal of progress has been made toward the goal of offering music education to students throughout Nigeria.

In this article, the author approaches the status of music teaching and learning in Taiwan by discussing music education in the four levels of education: elementary, junior and senior high school, professional training, and teacher training. In addition, music offerings for gifted and talented students and the role of private music education are addressed. The author notes that Taiwan is experiencing a growing interest in music education and in the preservation of native Taiwanese musical forms.
