Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease. Despite aggressive national initiatives to eradicate measles, outbreaks have occurred in recent years. We report three infants who presented to a tertiary care hospital in Muscat, Oman, in 2019 with measles and then developed pneumonitis, received intensive care treatment and made full recoveries. Infants can have an atypical presentation and develop severe symptoms. Pneumonitis is a serious complication and the management strategies are controversial. The early detection of measles and isolation of affected individuals play major roles in the elimination of measles outbreaks.

Infective endocarditis (IE) is an infection of the heart endocardium with significant morbidity and mortality. Gram negative infection, particularly emphysematous IE, is an extremely rare and life-threatening disease. We report a 59-year-old diabetic female patient who was admitted to a secondary care hospital in Rustaq, Oman, in 2017 with the diagnosis of pneumonia for which she was started on antibiotics. Shortly afterwards, she developed facial and mouth deviation and became more tachypneic. Computed tomography of the brain demonstrated bilateral multiple small infarcts. Pulmonary angiography computed tomography was performed which ruled out pulmonary embolism. Nonetheless, it revealed an air-containing lesion around …

The Translation Of Personal Pronouns In French Discourses Into Indonesian, Sajarwa Sajarwa
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
Translation is the transfer of a message from a source-language text into an equivalent target-language text. Cultural differences between a source language and a target language always leave marks on a translation process. Language as part of culture influences the minds of its speakers, especially translators. French literary texts (as source texts) and their Indonesian translations (target texts) can provide examples of the differences between the reasoning process of French literary writers and that of Indonesian translators, particularly in the translation of pronouns with this topic being the focus of this present study. By carefully investigating how pronouns are translated …

The objective of this study is to look at learning indicators and contextualize extrinsic and intrinsic components in three Indonesian language textbooks for elementary school students. This study employs a qualitative research approach with a content analysis design to attain this purpose. The findings show that textbooks only use one learning indicator for each short story, although intrinsic (themes, characters, and messages) and extrinsic (social values, moral values, cultural values, and religious values) elements have been effectively balanced in the story. short. Although the results of this study do not represent any analysis of short story content in all primary …
Laboratory Experiments Of Land Assembly Without Eminent Domain, Mark Desantis, Matthew W. Mccarter, Abel Winn
Laboratory Experiments Of Land Assembly Without Eminent Domain, Mark Desantis, Matthew W. Mccarter, Abel Winn
ESI Publications
The authors use laboratory experiments to test two self-assessment tax mechanisms for facilitating land assembly. One mechanism is incentive compatible with a complex tax function, while the other uses a flat tax rate to mitigate implementation concerns. Sellers publicly declare a price for their land. Overstating its true value is penalized by using the declared price to assess a property tax; understating its value is penalized by allowing developers to buy the property at the declared price. The authors find that both mechanisms increase the rate of land assembly and gains from trade relative to a control in which sellers’ …

Punishment Clauses: Amending United States Constitutions To Pursue “Complete Abolition”, Sydney Osterweil-Artson
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review (CICLR) Blog
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (“UDHR”) proclaims, “No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.” Though not legally binding, the document denotes international principles of fundamental human rights. The United States Constitution fails to enshrine the UDHR’s categorical denunciation of slavery and servitude, with the Thirteenth Amendment reading: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”

Business owners have a lot to consider when starting a business. Competing with themselves should not be something they need to think about. However, for businesses dealing with counterfeiters, this is exactly what is happening. Counterfeit products are not new to the market, but they have expanded drastically into the ecommerce and social media markets. A problem that is magnetized by selling counterfeit on the internet is that it has become even harder for buyers to recognize that they are not buying an original product.

Study question: Is there a shared genetic or causal association of endometriosis with asthma or what biological mechanisms may underlie their potential relationships?
Summary answer: Our results confirm a significant but non-causal association of endometriosis with asthma implicating shared genetic susceptibility and biological pathways in the mechanisms of the disorders, and potentially, their co-occurrence.
What is known already: Some observational studies have reported a pattern of co-occurring relationship between endometriosis and asthma; however, there is conflicting evidence and the aetiology, as well as the underlying mechanisms of the relationship, remain unclear.
Study design, size, duration: We applied multiple statistical genetic …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This study quantifies the uncertainties in the projected changes in potential longshore sediment transport (LST) rates along a non-straight coastline. Four main sources of uncertainty, including the choice of emission scenarios, Global Circulation Model-driven offshore wave datasets (GCM-Ws), LST models, and their non-linear interactions were addressed through two ensemble modelling frameworks. The first ensemble consisted of the offshore wave forcing conditions without any bias correction (i.e., wave parameters extracted from eight datasets of GCM-Ws for baseline period 1979–2005, and future period 2081–2100 under two emission scenarios), a hybrid wave transformation method, and eight LST models (i.e., four bulk formulae, four …

In this thesis, we propose a cryptographic technique for an authenticated, end-to-end verifiable and secret ballot election. Currently, almost all verifiable e-voting systems require trusted authorities to perform the tallying process except for the DRE-i and DRE-ip systems. We have shown a weaknesses in the DRE-ip system and proposed a solution. We have modified the DRE-ip system so that no adversary can create and post a valid ballot on the public bulletin board without detection. We provide security proofs to prove the security properties of the proposed scheme. We propose two methods to store these ballots using blockchain and cloud …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
While work-family matters continue to receive increasing attention, one group that faces considerable health, childcare, and work adjustment challenges has remained relatively ignored and understudied – postpartum mothers returning to employment. Driven by the work-home resources model as theoretical backing, I used path analytic methods to examine the mechanisms by which key workplace resources for postpartum women, including family-focused support from organizational stakeholders, flexibility availability, and breastfeeding resources, relate to their subsequent perceptions of work interference with family and engagement in physical activity and high quality/quantity sleep. Specifically, four waves of data were collected from a sample of 129 women …

Traditional delivery of Extension programming changed overnight in March 2020, when the COVID-19 outbreak forced switching traditional methods to virtual delivery. Extension professionals across South Carolina quickly adapted to online delivery. Concerns over instructor preparedness to use online tools, including functions to assure accessibility, did arise. Findings from this non-experimental, descriptive research study suggested Extension professionals used online tools (primarily Zoom). The majority were not comfortable using many of the features that would enhance instruction, including polling, file transfer, and live-streaming media platforms. Additionally, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint skills to assure accessibility for clientele were lacking.

Measuring brain activity through Electroencephalogram (EEG) analysis for eye state prediction has attracted attention from machine learning researchers. There have been many methods for EEG analysis using supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques. The tradeoff between the accuracy and computation time of these methods in performing the analysis is an important issue that is rarely investigated in the previous research. This paper accordingly proposes a new method for EEG signal analysis through Self-Organizing Map (SOM) clustering and Deep Belief Network (DBN) approaches to efficiently improve the computation and accuracy of the previous methods. The method is developed using SOM clustering …

IntroductionNitrate supplementation in the form of beetroot juice (BRJ) ingestion has been shown to improve exercise tolerance during acute hypoxia, but its effect on exercise physiology remains unstudied during sustained terrestrial high altitude exposure. We hypothesized that performing exercise at high altitude would lower circulating nitrate and nitrite levels and that BRJ ingestion would reverse this phenomenon while concomitantly improving key determinants of aerobic exercise performance.MethodsTwenty seven healthy volunteers (21 male) underwent a series of exercise tests at sea level (SL, London, 75 m) and again after 5–8 days at high altitude (HA, Capanna Regina Margherita or “Margherita Hut,” 4,559 …

Technology has proven effective in enhancing teaching methods. Gesture-based applications have a high potential for use in the development of teaching methods in schools. Simulation and 3D visualization, in particular, are some of the most important technologies that positively affected education. The implementation of these technologies in the education sector can determine students’ potential and enhance their interest in learning in scientific fields. This study explored the use of a chemistry education system that integrates virtual simulation and molecular visualization and uses a Leap Motion controller to teach chemistry in secondary schools. The sample comprised 113 students enrolled in four …
