A Study On The Early Stages Of Degradation Of Multi-Component Alloy Surfaces In Extreme Environments Using The Multi-Cell Monte Carlo Method, Tyler D. Dolezal
A Study On The Early Stages Of Degradation Of Multi-Component Alloy Surfaces In Extreme Environments Using The Multi-Cell Monte Carlo Method, Tyler D. Dolezal
Theses and Dissertations
A computational toolset is presented and used in two examples that examined the interactions between structural materials and their extreme environments. A multi-cell Monte Carlo algorithm was developed to generate thermodynamically realistic solid-state alloy systems. These structures served as the foundation upon which surface slab models were generated. The tedious procedure of generating surface slab models from bulk structures was automated. The tools were used to study the high temperature surface corrosion resistance of a high-entropy alloy, Al10Nb15Ta5Ti30Zr40, and a nickel-based alloy, Ni70Nb10W20, under …
Characterization Of Environmental Conditioning Of Lithium Hydride Using Spectroscopy And Machine Learning, Ryan E. Pinson
Characterization Of Environmental Conditioning Of Lithium Hydride Using Spectroscopy And Machine Learning, Ryan E. Pinson
Theses and Dissertations
Lithium compounds such as lithium hydride (LiH) and anhydrous lithium hydroxide (LiOH) have various applications in industry but are highly reactive when exposed to moisture and CO2. These reactions create new molecular forms, including compounds such as lithium oxide (Li2O), lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LiOH ·H2O), and lithium carbonate (Li2CO3). These new compounds degrade the effectiveness in applications using these compounds. The negative effects induced by new lithium compounds creates a need for the ability to characterize the in-growth of such compounds. To study these in-growths, this work will present environmental …
Screening Heuristics For The Evaluation Of Covert Network Node Insertion Scenarios, Andrew E. Pekarek
Screening Heuristics For The Evaluation Of Covert Network Node Insertion Scenarios, Andrew E. Pekarek
Theses and Dissertations
The majority of research on covert networks uses social network analysis (SNA) to determine critical members of the network to either kill or capture for the purpose of network destabilization. This thesis takes the opposite approach and evaluates potential scenarios for inserting an agent into a covert network for information gathering purposes or future disruption operations. Due to the substantial number of potential insertion scenarios in a large network, this research proposes three screening heuristics that leverage SNA measures to reduce the solution space before applying a simple search heuristic.
A United States Air Force Site Selection Methodology In A Contested Agile Combat Employment Environment, Zachary T. Moer
A United States Air Force Site Selection Methodology In A Contested Agile Combat Employment Environment, Zachary T. Moer
Theses and Dissertations
The United States Air Force’s (USAF) Agile Combat Employment (ACE) strategy relies on host country access and underlying local infrastructure to facilitate airpower. However, numerous factors, including peer-to-peer threats, complex geopolitics, and intricate supply chain management, often complicate site access and thwart site selection decisions. When shaping the battlespace for future conflict, strategists and planners face the difficult task of identifying optimal locations to conduct adaptive basing operations given these complicating factors. Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) can help strategists appropriately account for competing objectives and maintain a competitive advantage with theater adversaries. This thesis presents an MCDA model that evaluates …
Examining Failures Of Kc-135s Using Survival Analysis, Vanessa I. R. Unseth
Examining Failures Of Kc-135s Using Survival Analysis, Vanessa I. R. Unseth
Theses and Dissertations
The United States Air Force manages an inventory of 396 KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft. With mission capability rates falling and total non-mission capability supply rates increasing, it is necessary to take a deeper look at recurrent failures. The study applies non-parametric and semi-parametric survival models to a dataset retrieved from LIMS-EV to look at the duration(s) until failure for the KC-135. Results of non-parametric models show cumulative failure rates increase as sorties or flight hours increase. In addition, semi-parametric models or Cox proportional hazards models with frailty confirm that locations or air bases are not associated with recurrent failures.
Burn Probability And Climate Change: A Quantitative Evaluation Of The Temporal Alterations Of Wildfire, David N. Robinson
Burn Probability And Climate Change: A Quantitative Evaluation Of The Temporal Alterations Of Wildfire, David N. Robinson
Theses and Dissertations
The intensity of extreme weather events, specifically wildfires, along the West Coast has slowly grown overtime due to atmospheric changes caused by climate change. The Air Force, though aware of the threat that is wildfire, does not currently have a quantitative way to assess the hazard to base locations. In this paper, burn probability is quantitatively calculated through the geospatial analysis programs to provide a means of assessing wildfire vulnerability. The FlamMap fire simulator generated burn probabilities for Vandenberg Air Force Base using climate data generated by the remote automated weather station on the base to highlight how the burn …
Surrogate Modeling Of Computational Aerodynamic Responses For A Generic Hypersonic Vehicle, Jacob R. Johanik
Surrogate Modeling Of Computational Aerodynamic Responses For A Generic Hypersonic Vehicle, Jacob R. Johanik
Theses and Dissertations
In the field of multidisciplinary hypersonic vehicle design, striking the balance between the accuracy and efficiency of a predictive aerodynamic response model is a significant challenge. In response to this challenge, the objective of this thesis is to evaluate the aerodynamic performance of a Generic Hypersonic Vehicle (GHV) using the technique of surrogate modeling Computational Fluid Dynamic data points across a large range of flight conditions. To accomplish this, the full CFD process was conducted by preparing the vehicle geometry, generating a grid, computing the flow, and post-processing the data. A three-dimensional, quasi-random distribution of 1000 points defined the design …
Lockdowns As A War On The Poor: Looking At Outcomes In Silicon Valley, John B. Estill
Lockdowns As A War On The Poor: Looking At Outcomes In Silicon Valley, John B. Estill
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
COVID-19 has led to unprecedented state-sponsored assaults on individual liberty including mask requirements, lockdowns, and mandatory testing and vaccinations. Unfortunately, these broad restrictions have multiple unintended consequences beyond the simple stripping away of individual rights. Silicon Valley, centered in Santa Clara County, represents a particularly compelling case. There has been much dialogue about the digital divide separating poor service workers from wealthy techies, and mandatory lockdowns have had a particularly damaging effect on the divide. They will continue to have negative ramifications long into the future.
Does Restoration Of Urban Riparian Zones Impact Stream Water Quality In Portland, Oregon, Ash Ivanov
Does Restoration Of Urban Riparian Zones Impact Stream Water Quality In Portland, Oregon, Ash Ivanov
University Honors Theses
Riparian zones influence urban stream quality through factors such as shading the stream, adding nutrients through leaf litter, stabilizing the stream banks to reduce turbidity, and filtering toxins out of the water. Riparian restoration often involves changing plant assemblage to be more diverse and include primarily native species instead of non-native, improving connection to the stream through changing stream morphology, improving species habitat, and reducing pollution. The goal of this study was to determine if urban riparian restoration projects in the region were successful, and if not, why that may be the case. The study was performed in the Portland, …

Exploring Stress Relief Methods And The Efficacy For The Houseless At Urban Settings, Lexis Bates
University Honors Theses
When the word "stress" is mentioned to lay people, they might think that their definitions of "stress" would be the same or similar. However, stress may vary by, not only degrees of the adverse circumstances, but also kinds of stressors which make an individual's experience of stress and their coping mechanisms complicated. Stress refers to a state of mental strain or tension resulting from adverse circumstances. Each individual living in society undergoes stress as a part of life. To some degree, stress keeps us motivated to stay alive in this way through survival instincts. However, excess stress may cause chaos …
Enhancing Exchange Of Knowledge On The Practice Of Applied Behavior Analysis, Harper C. Thomas
Enhancing Exchange Of Knowledge On The Practice Of Applied Behavior Analysis, Harper C. Thomas
University Honors Theses
Applied behavior analysis (ABA) - originally a method of studying behavior - is now an intervention style that utilizes operant conditioning and behaviorism to teach and address behaviors that support the development of autistic students. While much of ABA is strongly supported by research, a debate exists over its use. Criticisms from people on the spectrum, their families, and professionals of various fields target everything from ABA’s implementation, research, and ethical basis. By clarifying what ABA entails, reviewing the history of ABA, compiling criticisms, and collecting opinions of Oregon-based behavioral specialists, this thesis seeks to identify regions where ABA can …

Perversion: A Genealogy Of Deviance And Creation Of The "Other", J D. Lyell
University Honors Theses
Drawing from Thomas Aquinas' Theory of Natural Law, I investigate Euro-Christian conceptions of naturalness and unnaturalness and how they were weaponized to cast racialized groups as perverse in the construction of the United States. I focus on the enforcement of Euro-heteropatriarchy to demonize Indigenous family and gender structures, as well as the characterization of Black bodies as abnormal by white academia to demonstrate some of the ways gender and sexuality have been colonized in the U.S. My research provides a general outline tracing a genealogy of deviance as established by Euro-Christian norms of sexuality and gender, which emerges from a …

Gender Parity In Authorship Of Published Randomized Clinical Trials In Stroke Neurology From 2000 To 2021., Noor F Shaik, Ali A Saherwala, Diana L Tzeng
Department of Neurology Faculty Papers
Gender parity is a crucial goal in clinical medicine so that women have equal access and representation. Although approximately half (46%) of US neurology residents and fellows are female, proportions of female assistant, associate, and full professors are 49%, 41%, and 23%, respectively. This has far-reaching effects, from clinical publications to invited speakerships.Although a study noted increasing trends in female authorship in high-impact neurology journals the current literature lacks evidence on a more informative benchmark—first and last authorship in randomized clinical trials (RCTs), which is typically considered for career advancement. This study assessed annual proportions and trends of female first …

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers
Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) is the most common cause of spinal cord dysfunction in adults. Its prevalence is increasing as a result of population aging. The diagnosis of DCM is often delayed or overlooked, resulting in secondary neurologic morbidity. The natural course of DCM typically presents as a gradual neurological deterioration, with symptoms ranging from muscle weakness to complete paralysis, with variable degrees of sensory deficits and sphincter dysfunction. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and electrophysiological studies allow the assessment of spinal cord function and its structural damage to determine treatment and clinical outcomes. All patients with signs and symptoms consistent …

Echinochloa colona and other species in this genus are a threat to global rice production and food security. Quinclorac, an auxin mimic, is a common herbicide for grass weed control in rice, and Echinochloa spp. have evolved resistance to it. The complete mode of quinclorac action and subsequent evolution of resistance is not fully understood. We analyzed the de novo transcriptome of multiple-herbicide-resistant (ECO-R) and herbicide-susceptible genotypes in response to quinclorac. Several biological processes were constitutively upregulated in ECO-R, including carbon metabolism, photosynthesis, and ureide metabolism, indicating improved metabolic efficiency. The transcriptional change in ECO-R following quinclorac treatment indicates an …

Despite the improved understanding of the molecular and genetic heterogeneity of glioblastoma, there is still an unmet need for better therapeutics, as treatment approaches have remained unchanged in recent years. Research into the role of the immune microenvironment has generated enthusiasm for testing immunotherapy (specifically, immune checkpoint inhibitors). However, to date, trials of immunotherapy in glioblastoma have not demonstrated a survival advantage. Combination approaches aimed at optimally inducing response to immune checkpoint inhibitors with radiotherapy are currently being investigated. Herein, the authors describe their experience of the potential benefit and clinical outcomes of using combination pembrolizumab (an immune checkpoint inhibitor) …

Leiomyosarcoma is one of the most common subtypes of soft tissue sarcomas accounting for approximately 20% of sarcomas. As leiomyosarcoma patients frequently develop metastatic disease, effective systemic therapies are needed to improve clinical outcomes. The overall activity of the currently available conventional systemic therapies and the prognosis of patients with advanced and/or metastatic disease are poor. As such, the treatment of this patient population remains challenging. As a result, there is a clear unmet medical need, and designing and performing meaningful clinical studies are of utmost importance to improve the prognosis of this patient group. Therefore, the aim of this …

OBJECTIVE: Regression models are ubiquitous in thoracic surgical research. We aimed to compare the value of standard logistic regression with the more complex but increasingly used penalized regression models using a recently published risk model as an example.
METHODS: Using a standardized data set of clinical T1-3N0 esophageal cancer patients, we created models to predict the likelihood of unexpected pathologic nodal disease after surgical resection. Models were fitted using standard logistic regression or penalized regression (ridge, lasso, elastic net, and adaptive lasso). We compared the model performance (Brier score, calibration slope, C statistic, and overfitting) of standard regression with penalized …

Previous work has shown that osteoprogenitor cells (Prx1+) and pre-osteoblasts (Osx+) contribute to mechanical loading-induced bone formation. However, the role of mature Dmp1-expressing osteoblasts has not been reported. In this study we assessed the contribution of osteoblast lineage cells to bone formation at an early time point following mechanical loading (day 8 from onset of loading). We labeled Osx-expressing and Dmp1-expressing cells in inducible Osx and Dmp1 reporter mice (iOsx-Ai9, iDmp1-Ai9), respectively, 3 weeks before loading. Mice were then loaded daily for 5 days (days 1-5) and were dosed with 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU) in their drinking water until euthanasia on day …
