The Role Of Top-Down Appetite Self-Regulation In The Development Of Healthy Eating Behaviors Among Children: A Narrative Review And Socialization Framework, David J Bridgett, Sheryl O Hughes, Matthew Broussard, Daniela Mccourt, Christina M Croce, Jennifer O Fisher Mar 2026

The Role Of Top-Down Appetite Self-Regulation In The Development Of Healthy Eating Behaviors Among Children: A Narrative Review And Socialization Framework, David J Bridgett, Sheryl O Hughes, Matthew Broussard, Daniela Mccourt, Christina M Croce, Jennifer O Fisher

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

Appetite self-regulation (ASR) among children is thought to have a fundamental role in shaping the development of healthy eating behaviors, dietary intake, and growth during childhood. Parallel to developmental frameworks for understanding "general" self-regulation among children, ASR has been described as involving children's use of "top-down" cognitive processes to moderate "bottom-up" biological drives around food approach and avoidance in the interest of achieving desired eating behaviors or outcomes. Whereas bottom-up ASR processes during early childhood are well characterized, particularly in the context of dysregulation and obesity risk, the role of top-down ASR processes in the development of healthy eating behaviors …

Background: There is growing interest in understanding the link between early life exposures to ambient air pollution and childhood blood pressure; however, existing findings, largely from single site/cohort studies, are inconclusive.

Methods: We examined the association between exposures to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and blood pressure measured at age 5-12 years in 4863 U.S. children from 20 pregnancy cohorts of the NIH ECHO cohort. Point-based residential exposures were derived from spatiotemporal models with a biweekly resolution and averaged over each trimester, the whole pregnancy, and child age 0-2 years. We converted systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood …

Law's Penal-Professional World Order, Pilar Margarita Hernández Escontrías

Fordham Law Review

The attorney discipline regime has been propagandized as a necessary mechanism to police poor attorney conduct to protect the public. According to this myth, professional associations investigate attorney misconduct and impose sanctions, thus protecting the “noble profession” from attorneys who would tarnish its reputation. Violations of ethics rules lead to investigation, prosecution, and punishment by the state bar. In structure and language, state bars and judicial officers replicate the state in their use of disciplinary frameworks and regimes.

The self-regulating bar is a form of punitive governance used by the state to control entry into and expulsion from the profession. …

At The Crossroads: Private Litigation And The Fate Of Sections 2 And 208 Of The Voting Rights Act, Aviva D. Kohn

Fordham Law Review

For six decades, private plaintiffs have stood at the center of Voting Rights Act (VRA) enforcement, bringing an overwhelming majority of the suits challenging discriminatory voting practices nationwide. Most federal courts have allowed private plaintiffs to sue for relief under the VRA. However, in 2023 and 2025, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit broke from this pattern, holding that neither section 2 nor section 208 of the VRA permits private litigants to sue for relief. The Eighth Circuit’s decisions rest on a narrow reading of congressional intent, a rigid application of Alexander v. Sandovaland Gonzaga University …

When Uniform Standards Are Missing: Judicial Inconsistency In Wages During Termination Proceedings In Indonesia, Fitriana Fitriana, Tri Hayati, Aloysius Uwiyono Mar 2026

When Uniform Standards Are Missing: Judicial Inconsistency In Wages During Termination Proceedings In Indonesia, Fitriana Fitriana, Tri Hayati, Aloysius Uwiyono

The Indonesian Journal of Socio-Legal Studies

This article examines how courts lack uniform judicial standards for determining Upah Proses, which refers to wages payable during termination proceedings in Indonesia. Constitutional Court Decision No. 37/PUU-IX/2011 requires employers to pay Upah Proses until courts issue a final and binding judgment. However, subsequent instruments introduce conflicting limitations and ambiguous provisions, including Supreme Court Circular Letter No. 3 of 2015 and Law No. 6 of 2023. Such inconsistencies create normative disharmony across constitutional, statutory, and administrative frameworks. The absence of coherent interpretive guidance divides the judiciary, leading courts to issue divergent rulings, even in cases with similar factual circumstances. The …

The New Social Contract For Universities: Designing Higher Education For The 100-Year Life, Lily Kong Mar 2026

The New Social Contract For Universities: Designing Higher Education For The 100-Year Life, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Dr Lily Kong, president of Singapore Management University, argues that the social contract between universities and society has fundamentally shifted and that higher education must evolve in response. The contract isn’t fraying for the usual reasons. It’s not about Ivory Towers or access as critics often claim. Rather it’s because technology, science and society are changing too fast and people are living much longer. A model built on credentialing 18-22 year olds and sending them off to a lifetime of work is obsolete. As Dr Kong puts it, “Universities can no longer function as institutions for the young only. They …

How Intellectual Humility Enhances Affective Well-Being: Daily Diary Studies On The Mediating Roles Of Daily Uplift And Stressor Exposure, Ysabel A. Guevarra, K. T. A. Sandeeshwara Kasturiratna, Andree Hartanto, Eddie M. W. Tong, Verity Y. Q. Lua, Nadyanna M. Majeed

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Objective: While intellectual humility has gained increasing prominence as a cognitive construct, its implications for affective well-being remain less understood. Method: The present paper draws on 7-day daily diary datasets (Study 1: Nparticipants=253, Nobservations=1721; Study 2: Nparticipants=485, Nobservations=3218) to examine how trait intellectual humility relates to daily positive and negative affect during uplifting and stressful events. We also tested potential mechanisms underlying the link between intellectual humility and affective well-being by examining whether intellectual humility moderates affective reactions to daily events or whether it indirectly enhances affective well-being by influencing the frequency of daily uplift and stressor exposure. Results: Across …

Codeultrafeedback: An Llm-As-A-Judge Dataset For Aligning Large Language Models To Coding Preferences, Martin Weyssow, Aton Kamanda, Xin Zhou, Houari Sahraoui

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Evaluating the alignment of large language models (LLMs) with user-defined coding preferences is a challenging endeavor that requires a deep assessment of LLMs' outputs. Existing methods and benchmarks rely primarily on automated metrics and static analysis tools, which often fail to capture the nuances of user instructions and LLM outputs. To address this gap, we introduce the LLM-as-a-Judge evaluation framework and present CodeUltraFeedback, a comprehensive dataset for assessing and improving LLM alignment with coding preferences. CodeUltraFeedback consists of 10,000 coding instructions, each annotated with four responses generated from a diverse pool of 14 LLMs. These responses are annotated using GPT-3.5 …

Synthesis And Structures Of Ru(Ii)-P-Cymene Sandwich Complexes With Electron-Withdrawing Cyclopentadienyl Ligands, Uttam R. Pokharel, Sean Parkin, John P. Selegue

Chemistry Faculty Publications

A modular synthetic route has been developed to prepare a new series of cationic ruthenium(II) complexes with electron-withdrawing 1,2-diacylcyclopentadienyl ligands. The 2-acyl-6-hydroxyfulvenes were synthesized from cyclopentadienide and acyl chlorides and converted to Tl(I) cyclopentadienyl salts using Tl2SO4/KOH. Transmetalation with [Ru(η6-p-cymene)(μ-Cl)Cl]2 followed by PF6− metathesis gives the complexes [Ru{η5-1,2-C5H3(CO–R)2}(η6-p-cymene)][PF6] (R = t-Bu, p-Tol, p-ClC6H4, p-IC6H4) in moderate to high yields. The new compounds were characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy; mass spectrometry …

Designing For Clarity Under Pressure: A Paper Goods System For Fundraising Auctions And Dinners, Ashley Spinoglio Mar 2026

Designing For Clarity Under Pressure: A Paper Goods System For Fundraising Auctions And Dinners, Ashley Spinoglio

Graphic Communication

For my senior project, I focused on a design challenge I’ve experienced firsthand in fast-paced event environments: how to communicate clearly through print when guests are moving quickly and processing a lot of information at once. After three years working on the Cal Poly Winemaker Showcase, I saw how programs, menus, bid sheets, and signage are often created piece by piece under pressure, which can lead to inconsistency and confusion. This project develops a structured Event Paper Goods Design System that brings clarity, hierarchy, and cohesion to large-scale fundraising events.

Reframing Greek Life: The Ifc Story, Neal Raghav Parthasarathy Mar 2026

Reframing Greek Life: The Ifc Story, Neal Raghav Parthasarathy

Graphic Communication

Organizations like the Interfraternity Council (IFC) have a hard time with telling a comprehensive story of the positive impact they are making to Cal Poly as well as to the SLO community. Our fraternities spend thousands of hours collectively to serve the local communities, and we collect metrics on volunteer hours, how much funds we raised, etc. However, these are usually communicated in a disjointed way through social media, emails and so on. So the various community stakeholders don’t get the full picture, and the negative perceptions around partying far outweigh the good we are doing.

As IFC president, I …
