An Ideology Of Racism: Community Representation, Segregation, And The Historical Cemeteries Of Panama City, Florida, Ethan David Mauldin Putman
An Ideology Of Racism: Community Representation, Segregation, And The Historical Cemeteries Of Panama City, Florida, Ethan David Mauldin Putman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Mortuary research in historical archaeology has always acknowledged the cultural and symbolic links between cemeteries and the people who created them. Studies across multiple disciplines focus on what data can be gained about past societies from historical cemeteries, and they tend to ascribe to an understanding of the ‘cemetery-as-model.’ This idea of the local burial ground as a mirror of the community that formed it seems reasonable, even logical, but few of these studies have taken the time to compare the historical context of the societies in question to the results of their cemetery analyses. The assumption of the cemetery …

Myelin is essential to neuronal health and CNS function, and oligodendrocytes (OLs) undergo a complex process of cytoskeletal remodeling to form compact myelin sheaths. We previously discovered that a formin protein, Dishevelled associated activator of morphogenesis 2 (Daam2), suppresses OL differentiation through Wnt signaling; however, its role in cytoskeletal control remains unknown. To investigate this, we used OL-specific Daam2 conditional knockout (Daam2 cKO) mice of either sex and found myelin decompaction during an active period of myelination in postnatal development and motor coordination deficits in adulthood. Using primary OL cultures, we found Daam2-depleted OLs showed morphologic dysregulation during differentiation, suggesting …

Prediagnosis Leisure-Time Physical Activity And Lung Cancer Survival: A Pooled Analysis Of 11 Cohorts, Jae Jeong Yang, Yikyung Park, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Little is known about the association between physical activity before cancer diagnosis and survival among lung cancer patients. In this pooled analysis of 11 prospective cohorts, we investigated associations of prediagnosis leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) with all-cause and lung cancer-specific mortality among incident lung cancer patients.
METHODS: Using self-reported data on regular engagement in exercise and sports activities collected at study enrollment, we assessed metabolic equivalent hours (MET-h) of prediagnosis LTPA per week. According to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, prediagnosis LTPA was classified into inactivity, less than 8.3 and at least 8.3 MET-h per week (the minimum …

BACKGROUND: Long-term survivors of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia are at elevated risk for neurocognitive deficits and corresponding brain dysfunction. This study examined sex-based differences in functional neuroimaging outcomes in acute lymphoblastic leukemia survivors treated with chemotherapy alone.
METHODS: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and neurocognitive testing were obtained in 123 survivors (46% male; median [min-max] age = 14.2 years [8.3-26.5 years]; time since diagnosis = 7.7 years [5.1-12.5 years]) treated on the St. Jude Total XV treatment protocol. Participants performed the n-back working memory task in a 3 T scanner. Functional neuroimaging data were processed (realigned, slice time corrected, normalized, …
Evaluation Of Hippocampal Allostatic Load-Associated Factors In Animal Models Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Relevance To Human Ptsd, Dennis Parker Kelley
Evaluation Of Hippocampal Allostatic Load-Associated Factors In Animal Models Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Relevance To Human Ptsd, Dennis Parker Kelley
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with elevated allostatic load, nearly double the risk for metabolic syndrome, reduced hippocampal volume, and contextual memory processing deficits. Emerging evidence suggests that these stress effects may predispose individuals to the development of PTSD, and there is a known relationship between chronic stress and metabolic dysfunction. In this work, we utilized two rat models of PTSD to explore these connections. We used an acute predator odor stressor to investigate the relationship between PTSD-like behaviors and mitochondrial dysfunction in the hippocampus of rats, and we observed that conditioned place avoidance was associated with reduced mitochondrial …
Can An Expert Opinion Mitigate Racially Biased Diversion Decisions? An Empirical Examination In The Context Of Reoffense Risk Assessment, Riley Davis
Dissertations
This study aimed to better understand the circumstances in which the racial identity of a justice impacted person can extraneously influence post-conviction placement decisions based on specialized re-offense prediction tools, specifically decisions at the crux of community supervision and jail time. Participants (N = 448) were exposed to one of nine conditions (3 descriptors of racial identities 3 levels of risk information) in which they were asked to rate their agreement with risk findings, rank the categorical risk of a hypothetical justice-involved person, and make management decisions (i.e., incarceration or community supervision; mandated treatment). It was hypothesized that participants …

Knowledge Management Model For Library In Indonesia (Study Case : Sunan Ampel State Islamic University Of Surabaya), Ilham M.Said, Merlin Apriliyanti
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The knowledge management is playing an increasingly important role in organizations across various industries. Through knowledge management, an organization seeks to acquire or create potentially useful knowledge and make it available to its members so that it can be used at the right time and in the right place to have a positive impact on the organization's activities. The library of the State Islamic University of Sunan Ampel Surabaya has not optimally managed the existing knowledge. Knowledge management at the library of the State Islamic University of Sunan Ampel Surabaya is still limited to explicit knowledge such as textbooks, journals, …

Joseph A. Kennedy v. Bremerton School District
On Writ of Certiorari to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
From the Summary of Argument
This case offers the Court a much-needed opportunity to resolve the longstanding confusion caused by its conflicting and erroneous interpretations of the Establishment Clause. Although recent decisions clarify that the government may not suppress private religious expression, the Court has yet to clear away an undergrowth of older precedents that are often read to suggest the opposite. Rather than permit those outdated decisions to persist and perpetuate confusion, the Court should …

The East Big Cypress Case, 1948-1987: Environmental Politics, Law, And Florida Seminole Tribal Sovereignty, Harry A. Kersey, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
Congressional enactment of the Seminole Indian Land Claims Settlement Act of 1987 paved the way for resolution of a thirty-nine-year political and legal conflict between the Seminole Indians and the state of Florida over control of one of the most environmentally sensitive regions in the state.1 The area, known as the East Big Cypress Reservation, was a 28,000-acre tract lying in western Broward and Palm Beach counties, and it formed a rectangle measuring approximately six miles north to south and eight miles east to west. On the west, the tract abutted the federal Big Cypress Indian Reservation, which was acquired …
"The Fox Goes To France": Florida, Secret Codes, And The Election Of 1876, James C. Clark
"The Fox Goes To France": Florida, Secret Codes, And The Election Of 1876, James C. Clark
Florida Historical Quarterly
Samuel J. Tilden’s defeat in the 1876 presidential election has long been the subject for contention and discussion. While many of the causes have received attention, the role played by the secret telegrams between New York and Florida has been overlooked. Confusion over the codes utilized for the telegrams prevented Tilden’s operatives in Florida from purchasing the vote of a key state official. Had the attempt succeeded, the state’s four electoral votes might have been awarded to Tilden, and the prize of the presidency would have gone to him and the Democratic party.
The Florida, Atlantic And Gulf Central Railroad, 1851-1868, Canter Brown, Jr.
The Florida, Atlantic And Gulf Central Railroad, 1851-1868, Canter Brown, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
The role of the Florida, Atlantic and Gulf Central Railroad (FA&GC) in Florida’s development and politics, during the period beginning with the line’s incorporation in 1851 and lasting until its initial forced sale in 1868, was substantial and controversial. While the sixty-mile line was smaller than either the Pensacola and Georgia Railroad (P&G) or the Florida Railroad (FRR), its eastern terminus was Jacksonville which, only a village in 1851, rapidly developed into the principal port on Florida’s Atlantic coast. Equally propitious, its western end lay at Lake City on the edge of Florida’s rich plantation belt. The FRR’s terminus at …

Review Essay:--Alfred I. Du Pont: His Impact On Florida, Jerrell H. Shofner
Florida Historical Quarterly
Through the pages of this large and well-written book, Joseph Frazier Wall delivers all that the title promises and much more. Beginning with the origins of the du Pont family in the eighteenth century and ending with an epilogue about Ed Ball’s covetous management of the du Pont estate during the half century after Alfred’s death, Wall not only portrays the huge du Pont family through a half dozen generations, but also says a great deal about the growth of business, industry, technology, and finance in the context of the history of the United States from its revolutionary inception in …

West Florida's Creek Indian Crisis Of 1837, Brian R. Rucker
West Florida's Creek Indian Crisis Of 1837, Brian R. Rucker
Florida Historical Quarterly
Although Andrew Jackson’s forays into Spanish West Florida in 1814 and 1818 dispersed several hostile bands of Creek Indians, scattered parties remained in isolated forests and swamps. When Florida was transferred to the United States in 1821, settlers moving into the new territory soon were confronted with the presence of these natives. The majority were located in the central portion of the territory, but sizable bands lived in northwest Florida. The Treaty of Moultrie Creek, signed in 1823, provided for the settlement of approximately 800 friendly Creeks on reservation lands along the Apalachicola River. Smaller bands also lived along the …

Across The Border: Commodity Flow And Merchants In Spanish St. Augustine, James Cusick
Florida Historical Quarterly
Spanish Governor Zéspedes, writing in 1788 to a superior about his impressions of East Florida, decried the colony’s reliance on Havana as its sole source of supply. The majority of the colonists were far too impoverished, he wrote, to afford the high prices of goods shipped via Cuba. He continued: “[T]hat a poor immigrant at the end of one year, when he has made his first crop, or a Minorcan with a wife and four or five children who does not earn half a peso fuerte a day, should have to provide his family with goods bought from that place …

William Pope Duval: An Extraordinary Folklorist, Frank L. Snyder
Florida Historical Quarterly
William Pope Duval, who served four terms as territorial governor of Florida, was a natural storyteller.1 His tales were crafted and fabricated with so much skill that his listeners believed every word as the absolute truth. DuVal never hesitated to shade the truth or to embellish his stories so that they became fictionalized accounts bordering on the fringes of reality. He wove a web of drama as he spoke and completely captured the attention of his audience. The stations in life they, the members of his audience, occupied did not matter— raw frontiersmen, uneducated workingmen, intellectuals, literary geniuses, or sophisticated …

Men Without God Or King: Rural Settlers Of East Florida, 1784-1790, Susan R. Parker
Florida Historical Quarterly
In 1784 Spanish colonists returned to the Florida peninsula after a twenty-year hiatus of British rule. In St. Augustine troops from Cuba walked the streets talking in Spanish, former émigré residents or their relatives moved in to reclaim old homes, and mass was sung again in the parish church. Out in the countryside the settlers debated in English what their fate might be under the new regime. The few Spanish that they saw were the military detachments assigned to the frontier posts or the sailors bringing supplies.
