The Role Of Socioeconomic Status, Race, And Gender In Patient-Reported Outcomes Following Total Hip Arthroplasty, Allyn M. Bove, James Porter, Aatif Sayeed, Clair Smith, Brian A. Klatt

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Background

Disparities in total joint arthroplasty are well-documented. However, much of the research regarding disparities in vulnerable populations receiving total hip arthroplasty (THA) have focused on short-term outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of race, gender, and socioeconomic status (SES) on patient-reported outcomes six months following THA.

Methods

Electronic health record data were retrospectively analyzed for 269 individuals who underwent THA at a large urban hospital from 2013-16. Data retrieved included patient demographics, baseline health information, data regarding hospital length of stay when undergoing THA, post-operative complications, and patient-reported function, measured by the Harris Hip …

Civic Engagement As A Pathway To Meaningful Medical Student Engagement On The Social Determinants Of Health, Alexander Reardon, Jennie Deblanc, Alister Martin Mar 2022

Civic Engagement As A Pathway To Meaningful Medical Student Engagement On The Social Determinants Of Health, Alexander Reardon, Jennie Deblanc, Alister Martin

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

The social determinants of health have gained increasing prominence in medical education, but medical students and professionals alike are under-prepared to address those determinants. There is a growing body of evidence that voting and other forms of civic engagement affect the health of patients and communities. Registering patients in healthcare settings offers students and professionals an opportunity to impact their patients’ health beyond the clinical encounter. Medical students are particularly well suited to this work for a variety of reasons, including increasingly positive attitudes toward this kind of advocacy, increasing diversity in the medical student body, and lighter clinical and …

Multicultural Education: Work Yet To Be Done, A. Olu Oyinlade

Great Plains Sociologist

This paper brings to the surface for review, discussion, and debate, some critical issues for which multicultural education specialists need to provide useful theoretical frameworks that may guide our explanations to these issues. With the embracing of the ideology of multicultural education in the United States, practically every institution of formal learning, from the grade school to the university, is rapidly subscribing or has already subscribed to multicultural curricula. By embracing the multicultural agenda, educational institutions are demonstrating a commitment to broadening students' views of American subcultures (and world cultures). By exposing students to these subcultures, their histories, experiences and …

Challenges Of Good Governance In Post-Conflict Liberia, Kebba Darboe Mar 2022

Challenges Of Good Governance In Post-Conflict Liberia, Kebba Darboe

Great Plains Sociologist

Drawing on Max Weber’s theory of bureaucracy, this paper employs a conceptual framework to examine the challenges of good governance in post-conflict Liberia. Good governance is the sound exercise of administrative authority to manage a country’s resources for development (Astillero and Mangahas, 2002). Government, a pre-condition to governance, is the dominant decision-making arm of a given state. From 1989 to 1996, and 1999 to 2003, Liberia, a West African country, was involved in two civil wars which destroyed most of its’ social institutions. Study reveals that the challenges to good governance are political, administrative, and economic.

Dramaturgical History: The Roman Triumph, Gabe Kilzer Mar 2022

Dramaturgical History: The Roman Triumph, Gabe Kilzer

Great Plains Sociologist

This paper examines an ancient Roman ceremony, the Triumph, and explains the effect this ritual had on Roman civilization during the Empire and the effects it still has on our historical interpretation of that society. Using Erving Goffman’s theory of dramaturgy, I compare the leaders of Rome to actors on a stage playing to an audience. In this paper, I argue that the Triumph, which was a ceremony dedicated to the creation of a “God amongst men” in a conquering general, fueled a reciprocal relationship between the actions of society and the way in which we remember the Empire. Achieving …

Effective Dose Fractionation Schemes Of Radiotherapy For Prostate Cancer, Jose Alvarez, Kathleen M. Storey, Pavitra Kannan, Heyrim Cho Mar 2022

Effective Dose Fractionation Schemes Of Radiotherapy For Prostate Cancer, Jose Alvarez, Kathleen M. Storey, Pavitra Kannan, Heyrim Cho

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

Radiation therapy remains as one of the main cancer treatment modalities. Typical regimens for radiotherapy comprise a constant dose administered on weekdays, and no radiation on weekends. In this paper, we examine adaptive dosages of radiation treatment strategies for heterogeneous tumors using a dynamical system model that consist of radiation-resistant and parental populations with unique interactive properties, namely, PC3 and DU145 prostate cancer cell lines. We show that stronger doses of radiation given in longer time intervals, while keeping the overall dosage the same, are effective in PC3 cell lines, but not in DU145 cell lines. In addition, we tested …

Pairwise Union Overlap Model For Estimating Reach Surfaces, Matthew Clegg

Defensive Publications Series

A reach curve estimates the number of unique people that see an advertisement as a function of the number of advertising impressions that are purchased on an advertising network. A pairwise union overlap model can be used to compute a reach surface based on the reach curves of individual publishers. Such a reach surface can then be used to estimate the total number of unique people that can be reached for any arbitrary allocation of spend across multiple publishers.

Has Academic Freedom Failed? Can Liberalism Defend It?, Dan Becker

Compass: An Undergraduate Journal of American Political Ideas

Patrick Deneen has argued that both the philosophy of liberalism and the principle of academic freedom are fundamentally flawed. In this piece I argue that the liberal philosopher John Stuart Mill provides a convincing counterargument to Deneen’s criticisms.

Author information: Dan Becker graduated from Ursinus College in May of 2019 with degrees in philosophy and psychology.

Mitigating The Effects Of Eventual Consistency Of Dns Records On The Dns Provider Discovery Mechanism In The Domain Connect Specification, Aditya Gopalakrishnan, Navneet Goel Mar 2022

Mitigating The Effects Of Eventual Consistency Of Dns Records On The Dns Provider Discovery Mechanism In The Domain Connect Specification, Aditya Gopalakrishnan, Navneet Goel

Defensive Publications Series

Domain Connect is a publicly available standard that enables domain name service (DNS) providers to provide a mechanism for other entities to place or update DNS records on the domain. In the terminology of the CAP theorem, DNS retains availability and partition-tolerance (AP) while dropping consistency. In particular, DNS drops strong consistency for eventual consistency. This disclosure describes techniques to enable the Domain Connect specification to mitigate the effects of eventual consistency of DNS records. The techniques function under various scenarios, e.g., if the _domainconnect TXT record for a new or transferred domain hasn’t been propagated or is malformed.

Effective Differentiation Utilizing Technology In The Elementary Mathematics Classroom, Sara Wiertzema Mar 2022

Effective Differentiation Utilizing Technology In The Elementary Mathematics Classroom, Sara Wiertzema

Graduate Teacher Education

The achievement gap between high-achieving and low-performing students has long been documented in the United States. Little, if any, efforts have proven effective in narrowing this gap. The goal of this research analysis was to identify whether technology can be used to effectively differentiate math content for students and increase achievement, thereby closing the achievement gap in American schools. The results of the studies investigated were clear that technology can be an effective method for math differentiation and can help lower-performing students accelerate their learning, in some cases even surpassing their higher-achieving peers. Technology, when used correctly to differentiate in …

A Rulebook For Peptide Control Of Legume–Microbe Endosymbioses, Sonali Roy, Lena Maria Müller Mar 2022

A Rulebook For Peptide Control Of Legume–Microbe Endosymbioses, Sonali Roy, Lena Maria Müller

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Plants engage in mutually beneficial relationships with microbes, such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi or nitrogen-fixing rhizobia, for optimized nutrient acquisition. In return, the microbial symbionts receive photosynthetic carbon from the plant. Both symbioses are regulated by the plant nutrient status, indicating the existence of signaling pathways that allow the host to fine-tune its interactions with the beneficial microbes depending on its nutrient requirements. Peptide hormones coordinate a plethora of developmental and physiological processes and, recently, various peptide families have gained special attention as systemic and local regulators of plant–microbe interactions and nutrient homeostasis. In this review, we identify five 'rules' …

Religious Soft Power In Russian Foreign Policy: Constitutional Change And The Russian Orthodox Church, Robert C. Blitt

Scholarly Works

In this policy brief, Robert C. Blitt explores how the Kremlin continues to deepen its reliance on the Russian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (ROC) as a lever of soft power in Russian foreign policy. Constitutional amendments ratified in July 2020 suggest that this church-state partnership is poised to grow stronger in the coming years. Recognizing that the ROC’s international undertakings function to echo Kremlin objectives, policymakers should consider scrutinizing church activities and interactions with civil society and government interlocutors, with an eye toward identifying and minimizing opportunities for Kremlin influence and interference.

This policy brief was written as part of the …
