Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Pediatric oral health is a concern for many dentists and parents as they lay the foundation for long-term proper hygiene in children. Early childhood caries (ECC) is a disease of chronic tooth decay marked as the most common chronic disease of childhood in the world. Children living in rural areas are even more susceptible to this disease and thus significant attention is needed to curve these numbers. The consequences of ECC are much more than just cosmetic, but include heightened risk of gingivitis, periodontal disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and much more. A foundational cause of poor dental hygiene lies with …

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal (AELJ) Blog

On May 24th, 2021, the Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis signed Senate Bill 7072– “[A] sweeping set of restrictions on how the companies that run . . . [social media] websites shall moderate what is said on them.” The bill “impos[es] severe restrictions on the editorial freedom of large social media platforms,” such as Facebook and Twitter. It would require such platforms to display any and all posts by registered political candidates and media organizations, even if the posts violate the platforms’ “rules of conduct.” Governor DeSantis said the purpose of the bill is to ensure that “real Floridians . …

The Nfl’S Trademark Rights Over “Super Bowl”: Does It Give Them An Unfair Advantage?, Scott Semaya

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal (AELJ) Blog

Whether you’re a diehard football fan or just a casual observer, you’ve probably recognized that, leading up to the Super Bowl, many companies advertise their Super Bowl deals not using the actual phrase “Super Bowl” but using the phrase “The Big Game.” However, this is not a matter of choice. The NFL has held trademark rights over “Super Bowl” and several like phrases since 1969. As a result, the NFL has been able to control who can use the phrase “Super Bowl” for many years. Thus, in order to utilize the term “Super Bowl,” your company must be an official …

Anthropocene Fiction: Empathy, Kinship, And The Troubled Waters At The End Of The World, Megan Mandell Stowe Mar 2022

Anthropocene Fiction: Empathy, Kinship, And The Troubled Waters At The End Of The World, Megan Mandell Stowe

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Anthropocene literature features characters and environments grappling with the devastation of climate change. Donna Haraway’s term Chthulucene narrows this category further by exposing the tentacular connections between overpopulation, dependence on material goods, species loss, and other facets of global warming—such as water as a resource. Three novels of the Chthulucene exhibit these connections, centering on the importance of water to both ecologies and personal identity. As seen in the novels, place attachment brings ecology and identity together by forging a stewardship between person and location, often resulting in efforts to defend and preserve a place. In Octavia Butler’s Parable of …

This study uses a combination of propensity score matching (PSM) and difference-in-differences (DID) models to assess the effectiveness of a voluntary environmental program (VEP) called SolSmart that targets local governments to engage in solar-friendly practices to promote the local solar PV market in the United States. Via specific designation requirements and technical assistance, SolSmart simplifies the …

Stereo Correspondence Using Probabilistic Graphical Models For 3d Reconstruction, Hanieh Shabanian Mar 2022

Stereo Correspondence Using Probabilistic Graphical Models For 3d Reconstruction, Hanieh Shabanian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The 3D architecture of an object or of a scene can be estimated non-invasively from estimates of dense geometrical correspondences among two (stereo) or more views (2D projections) of the scene. Establishing dense correspondences among geometrical coordinates of multiple views (lower-dimensional projections) is an ill-posed problem due to scene occlusion. In addition, larger scene extents with smoother texture characteristics and differences in scene illumination among the multiple views/observers are sources of difficulties in disparity estimation. A successful strategy for improving the accuracy of the disparity estimates is to utilize spatial dependencies of the scene characteristics as well as of the …

Glynac (Glycine And N-Acetylcysteine) Supplementation In Mice Increases Length Of Life By Correcting Glutathione Deficiency, Oxidative Stress, Mitochondrial Dysfunction, Abnormalities In Mitophagy And Nutrient Sensing, And Genomic Damage, Premranjan Kumar, Ob W Osahon, Rajagopal V Sekhar

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Determinants of length of life are not well understood, and therefore increasing lifespan is a challenge. Cardinal theories of aging suggest that oxidative stress (OxS) and mitochondrial dysfunction contribute to the aging process, but it is unclear if they could also impact lifespan. Glutathione (GSH), the most abundant intracellular antioxidant, protects cells from OxS and is necessary for maintaining mitochondrial health, but GSH levels decline with aging. Based on published human studies where we found that supplementing glycine and N-acetylcysteine (GlyNAC) improved/corrected GSH deficiency, OxS and mitochondrial dysfunction, we hypothesized that GlyNAC supplementation could increase longevity. We tested our hypothesis …
