Issue-Areas, Sovereignty Costs, And North Americans’ Attitudes Toward Regional Cooperation, Malcolm Fairbrother, Tom Long, Clarisa Pérez-Armendáriz

All Faculty Scholarship

Studies of public opinion toward regionalism tend to rely on questions regarding trade integration and specific regional organizations. This narrow focus overlooks dimensions of regionalism that sit at the heart of international relations research on regions today. Instead, we argue that research should explore public preferences with respect to regional cooperation in different issue-areas. We find that people’s views of regional cooperation in North America diverge from their attitudes toward trade integration alone. Using data from Rethinking North America, an untapped public opinion survey conducted in Mexico, Canada, and the United States in 2013, we show that although country-level attitudes …

What Is The Law’S Role In A Recession?, Gabriel V. Rauterberg, Joshua Younger

Law & Economics Working Papers

The last two years have seen astonishing changes to how fiscal and monetary authorities in the developed world manage the economy. In the face of the largest global economic contraction since World War II, governments embarked on massive campaigns of economic stimulus, far outpacing the response to the Global Financial Crisis. Central banks similarly engaged in financial intervention on a scale not seen in eighty years. Over roughly a year, the Federal Reserve alone doubled its asset holdings from around $4 trillion to $8 trillion, making for arguably the most aggressive expansion of the United States’ money supply since the …

Does Getting A Degree Pay, Dhivian Thanabal, Hugh Ryan Hoare, Mirza Ali Mohamed Riyaz, Ilyas Farid, Devesh Mark Muruga, Edil Jani Bin Eddy, Mubarak Ali Muneer Ahmed

Introduction to Research Methods RSCH 202

Since an increase in opportunities has resulted in the pool of degree holders in Singapore to significantly increase over the last few decades, a re-examination of the relationship between salary and highest education qualification is necessary. The purpose of this study is to ascertain whether receiving a degree rather than gaining work experience leads to higher earnings during this degree inflation era. In 2022, this will be the first study in Singapore to examine a person's wage in relation to their highest level of education. The existing literature tends to find higher returns for the university degree holders, although the …

Role Of Bmi1 In Acute Lung Injury, María Helena Hernández-Cuervo Mar 2022

Role Of Bmi1 In Acute Lung Injury, María Helena Hernández-Cuervo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Acute Lung Injury (ALI) is a set of signs and symptoms that lead to acute hypoxemic respiratory failure characterized by bilateral pulmonary infiltrates not attributed to cardiogenic origin. It is caused by a massive innate immune response, with the migration of white blood cells (neutrophils and macrophages principally) and a cytokine storm, followed by alterations in mitochondrial function, increase in reactive oxygen species production, and oxidative stress that in turn induces more mitochondrial damage. Several studies have shown that mitochondrial alterations are key events in the mechanism of ALI and reducing mitochondrial dysfunction could be a possible target in the …

Cell-Free Dna Methylation Signatures In Cancer Detection And Classification, Jinyong Huang Mar 2022

Cell-Free Dna Methylation Signatures In Cancer Detection And Classification, Jinyong Huang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Early detection of cancer is believed as one of the best solutions to improve the therapeutic outcomes and overall survival of cancer patients. Analysis of circulating nucleic acids in bodily fluids, referred to as “liquid biopsies”, is rapidly gaining prominence for this purpose. Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) methylation has emerged as a promising biomarker for early cancer detection, tumor type classification, and treatment response monitoring. Currently, most cfDNA methylation profiling technologies are based on bisulfite conversion, while enrichment-based methods such as cfMeDIP-seq are beginning to show potential. To expand the use of enrichment-based methods in cfDNA methylation profiling, here, we report …

Webinar: Exploring Data Fusion Techniques To Derive Bicycle Volumes On A Network, Sirisha Kothuri, Joe Broach, Kate Hyun

TREC Webinar Series

Planners and decision makers have increasingly voiced a need for network-wide estimates of bicycling activity. Such volume estimates have for decades informed motorized planning and analysis but have only recently become feasible for non-motorized travel modes. Recently, new sources of bicycling activity data have emerged such as Strava, Streetlight, and GPS-enabled bike share systems. These emerging data sources have potential advantages as a complement to traditional count data, and have even been proposed as replacements for such data, since they are collected continuously and for larger portions of local bicycle networks. However, the representativeness of these new data sources has …

Starvation Diets: The History And Moral Implications Of Prolonging The Lives Of Juvenile Diabetics Before The Discovery Of Insulin, Olivia Thompson

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

This study explores the state of diabetology before Frederick Banting’s discovery of insulin in 1921, when juvenile diabetes was a terminal diagnosis. The widespread misunderstanding of the disease at the hands of physicians and scientists culminated in improper treatments and erroneous anatomical literature about diabetes until the age of discovery in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. More extensively, I examine the controversial work of 20th-century physician Frederick Madison Allen, who attempted to prolong the lives of juvenile diabetics by subjecting them to a rigid starvation diet by way of experimental trials lasting from 1915 to 1922. This diet …

Detecting Rainbow Trout Introgression In Bonneville Cutthroat Trout Of The Bear River Basin Using Field-Based Phenotypic Characteristics, Kevin A. Meyer, Ryan W. Hillyard, Matthew R. Campbell Mar 2022

Detecting Rainbow Trout Introgression In Bonneville Cutthroat Trout Of The Bear River Basin Using Field-Based Phenotypic Characteristics, Kevin A. Meyer, Ryan W. Hillyard, Matthew R. Campbell

Western North American Naturalist

Cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarkii × rainbow trout O. mykiss hybrids (hereafter hybrids) are difficult to visually distinguish from parental taxa, yet identifying phenotypic traits to separate hybrids from cutthroat trout is needed for conservation and management purposes. We compared phenotypic characteristics against genotype (using 34 species-diagnostic single nucleotide polymorphism loci) for 316 Bonneville cutthroat trout O. clarkii utah, rainbow trout and hybrids in Bear River tributaries. Our phenotypic classifications of fish were 91% accurate for Bonneville cutthroat trout but only 68% accurate for rainbow trout and hybrids combined. Classification errors based on phenotype were observed between parental taxa and …

Search For Strongly Interacting Massive Particles Generating Trackless Jets In Proton–Proton Collisions At √S = 13tev, A. Tumasyan

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

A search for dark matter in the form of strongly interacting massive particles (SIMPs) using the CMS detector at the LHC is presented. The SIMPs would be produced in pairs that manifest themselves as pairs of jets without tracks. The energy fraction of jets carried by charged particles is used as a key discriminator to suppress efficiently the large multijet background, and the remaining background is estimated directly from data. The search is performed using proton–proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 16.1 fb−1, collected with the CMS detector in 2016. No significant excess of events …

Adapted Physical Educators’ Social Media Usage For Professional Learning, Scott Mcnamara, Kwok Ng, Sean Healy

Faculty Publications

Physical educators report a multitude of benefits from accessing informal learning opportunities via social media. However, a lack of research has been conducted on adapted physical education (APE) teachers’ usage of social media for professional learning (PL) purposes. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore how APE teachers use social media to learn about APE content. A survey was used to identify APE teachers’ (n = 73) social media usage patterns. Descriptive statistics were reported, and multiple t-tests were used to compare how participants perceived the usefulness of social media vs. conferences for PL purposes. Pathway To The Shoah: The Protocols, "Jewish Bolshevism", Rosenberg, Goebbels, Ford, And Hitler, David M. Crowe

History Faculty Books and Book Chapters

In the dark months after the defeat at Stalingrad in 1943, Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi Party’s strident, virulently anti-Semitic propaganda minister, wrote in his diary that he had “devoted exhaustive study to The Protocols of the Elders of Zion” despite the fact that some argued that “they were not suited to present-day propaganda.” After rereading them, he concluded that “we can use them very well,” since The Protocols were “as modern today as they were when published for the first time.” The same day, May 13, 1943, he met with Hitler, who told his propaganda minister that he thought they …
