Evaluation Of Selected Bacteria And Yeast For Probiotic Potential In Poultry Production, Beverly Dixon, Agnes Kilonzo-Nthenge, Maureen Nzomo, Sarayu Bhogoju, Samuel Nahashon Mar 2022

Evaluation Of Selected Bacteria And Yeast For Probiotic Potential In Poultry Production, Beverly Dixon, Agnes Kilonzo-Nthenge, Maureen Nzomo, Sarayu Bhogoju, Samuel Nahashon

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Performance and efficiency of feed utilization in poultry is highly influenced by gut health, which is dependent on intestinal microbial balance. Probiotics are live microbial feed supplements or viable microorganisms that beneficially affect the host animal by improving its gastrointestinal tract (GIT) microbial balance. However, their mode of action and suitable GIT environment favoring their colonization of the GIT is obscure. The probiotic properties of Lactobacillus plantarum, Bifidobacterium longum, and Saccharomyces boulardii were evaluated. These microbes were tested in vitro against gastrointestinal conditions for survivability and their ability to attach to the intestinal mucosa. The ability of the microbes to …

The Microbiology Of Acute Exacerbations In Chronic Rhinosinusitis - A Systematic Review, Oghenefejiro Okifo, Amrita Ray, David A. Gudis

Otolaryngology Articles

BACKGROUND: Acute exacerbations (AE) in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) are a common and important clinical issue. However, relatively little is known regarding the underlying microbiology that drives exacerbations or how it relates to the microbiome of CRS. The purpose of this study is to examine the literature to characterize the microbiome associated with acute exacerbations in a chronic rhinosinusitis setting. Understanding this disease process may facilitate targeted antibiotic therapy, reduced antibiotic resistance, and offer more effective disease control and treatment efficacy.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the microbiome associated with acute exacerbations of chronic rhinosinusitis (AECRS).

METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of …

Caregiver Rights, Virtual Meetings, And The Multidisciplinary Team: Communication Of Legal Rights Within Special Education, Amber Gordon, Kurustun Musick

Theses & Honors Papers

During the COVID-19 pandemic many professional settings used virtual platforms to conduct meetings that typically took place in person. Within the United States public schools, special education programs faced unique challenges when conducting students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings. These meetings are mandatory and essential in creating an individualized plan to provide the necessary services and support for students or for monitoring their progress. As mandated through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), it is a legal right of parents and/or guardians to be afforded the opportunity to attend any meetings regarding the “identification, evaluation, and educational placement” of …

The Edge Of Christendom On The Early Modern Stage, Lisa Hopkins Mar 2022

The Edge Of Christendom On The Early Modern Stage, Lisa Hopkins

Late Tudor and Stuart Drama

Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the edges of Europe were under pressure from the Ottoman Turks. This book explores how Shakespeare and his contemporaries represented places where Christians came up against Turks, including Malta, Tunis, Hungary, and Armenia. Some forms of Christianity itself might seem alien, so the book also considers the interface between traditional Catholicism, new forms of Protestantism, and Greek and Russian orthodoxy. But it also finds that the concept of Christendom was under threat in other places, some much nearer to home. Edges of Christendom could be found in areas that were or had been pagan, …

Negotiating Boundaries In Medieval Literature And Culture: Essays On Marginality, Difference, And Reading Practices In Honor Of Thomas Hahn, Valerie B. Johnson, Kara L. Mcshane Mar 2022

Negotiating Boundaries In Medieval Literature And Culture: Essays On Marginality, Difference, And Reading Practices In Honor Of Thomas Hahn, Valerie B. Johnson, Kara L. Mcshane

Festschriften, Occasional Papers, and Lectures

Thomas Hahn’s work laid the foundations for medieval romance studies to embrace the study of alterity and hybridity within Middle English literature. His contributions to scholarship brought Robin Hood studies into the critical mainstream, normalized the study of historically marginalized literature and peoples, and encouraged scholars to view medieval readers as actively encountering others and exploring themselves. This volume employs his methodologies – careful attention to texts and their contexts, cross-cultural readings, and theoretically-informed analysis – to highlight the literary culture of late medieval England afresh. Addressing long-established canonical works such as Chaucer, Christine de Pizan, and Malory alongside understudied …

Brief Of Amici Curiae Law Professors In Support Of Appellees Regarding The “Abuse” Standard, Pamela Foohey Mar 2022

Brief Of Amici Curiae Law Professors In Support Of Appellees Regarding The “Abuse” Standard, Pamela Foohey

Amicus Briefs

This amicus brief explains how and why the nondebtor releases granted to the Sackler family, and a large and indeterminate number of other persons and entities in the chapter 11 reorganization of opioid-maker Purdue Pharma, were "abusive" as that term has historically been understood in bankruptcy.

In the 2005 Metromedia opinion, the Second Circuit warned that a nondebtor release "lends itself to abuse" because it “operates as a bankruptcy discharge arranged without a filing and without the safeguards of the Bankruptcy Code.” Liabilities arising from fraudulent transfers, as well as “willful and malicious injury,” have been considered classic examples of …

Analysis Of The Magnetic Signature Of Surface Waves Measured In A Laboratory Experiment, John Kluge, Alex Soloviev, Cayla W. Dean, Geoffrey K. Morrison, Brian K. Haus Mar 2022

Analysis Of The Magnetic Signature Of Surface Waves Measured In A Laboratory Experiment, John Kluge, Alex Soloviev, Cayla W. Dean, Geoffrey K. Morrison, Brian K. Haus

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

A magnetic signature is created by secondary magnetic field fluctuations caused by the phenomenon of seawater moving in Earth’s magnetic field. A laboratory experiment was conducted at the SUrge STructure Atmosphere INteraction (SUSTAIN) facility to measure the magnetic signature of surface waves using a differential method: a pair of magnetometers, separated horizontally by one-half wavelength, were placed at several locations on the outer tank walls. This technique significantly reduced the extraneous magnetic distortions that were detected simultaneously by both sensors and additionally doubled the magnetic signal of surface waves. Accelerometer measurements and local gradients were used to identify magnetic noise …

Vertebrate herbivore excrement is thought to influence nutrient cycling, plant nutrition, and growth; however, its importance is rarely isolated from other aspects of herbivory, such as trampling and leaf removal, leaving questions about the extent to which herbivore effects are due to feces. We hypothesized that as a source of additional nutrients, feces would directly increase soil N concentrations and N2O emission, alleviate plant, and microbial nutrient limitations, resulting in increased plant growth and foliar quality, and increase CH4 emissions. We tested these hypotheses using a field experiment in coastal western Alaska, USA, where we manipulated goose …

Male Combat Veterans In Pre-Licensure Baccalaureate Nursing Programs: A Phenomenological Exploration, Kelly L. Dyar Mar 2022

Male Combat Veterans In Pre-Licensure Baccalaureate Nursing Programs: A Phenomenological Exploration, Kelly L. Dyar

Dissertations

There is recognized shortage of nurses in the United States which includes a lack of baccalaureate prepared nurses and lack of workforce diversity related to gender. Military veterans could be a recruitment source for the problems currently facing the nursing profession. However, both student veterans and male nursing students have experienced feelings of isolation, lower grade point averages, and higher rates of attrition. A scoping review of the literature revealed a lack of nursing education research literature related to veterans as nursing students. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of male combat veterans in …

The use of easily accessible peripheral samples, such as blood or saliva, to investigate neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders is well-established in genetic and epigenetic research, but the pathological implications of such biomarkers are not easily discerned. To better understand the relationship between peripheral blood- and brain-based epigenetic activity, we conducted a pilot study on captive baboons (Papio hamadryas) to investigate correlations between miRNA expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and 14 different cortical and subcortical brain regions, represented by two study groups comprised of 4 and 6 animals. Using next-generation sequencing, we identified 362 miRNAs expressed at …

Libraries For All: The Place Of Advocacy And Marketing In Promoting Library Services To Disadvantaged Groups., Ejike Udensi Igwebuike Dr., Kingsley Tochukwu Ihejirika Dr, Marcus Carsimir Onah Dr.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Libraries exist to meet its user’s basic needs for information by acquiring and organizing information resources, creating enabling environment and providing adequate services to users. Once users’ needs, future trends and resources available have been established, the librarian is in a position to plan the marketing objectives, the resources to be used, the place and the time scale of the operation and the strategies required in achieving them. Information professionals must therefore understand that it is essential to actively advocate and market their services. Library advocacy and marketing is critical for any information professional in order to spread the word …

Compassion Fatigue, Resilience, And Intent To Stay: A Quantitative Study Among Nurse Educators, Brenda Fay Ulmen Mar 2022

Compassion Fatigue, Resilience, And Intent To Stay: A Quantitative Study Among Nurse Educators, Brenda Fay Ulmen

Dissertations

Replenishing and sustaining the number of registered nurses needed to meet the demands of the United States healthcare system is an increasing struggle for nursing schools across the country. The nurse educator shortage has resulted in nursing schools being filled to capacity, requiring educators to work extended hours in understaffed environments. Although nurse educators are deeply committed to the students they mentor and serve, the increasing demands of the multifaceted role may lead to symptoms of compassion fatigue. The problem under investigation in this study is that nurse educators may be leaving their positions in academia due to high levels …

The Possible Application Of Ketamine In The Treatment Of Depression In Alzheimer's Disease, Islam Mohammad Shehata, Waniyah Masood, Nouran Nemr, Alexandra Anderson, Kamal Bhusal, Amber N. Edinoff, Elyse M. Cornett, Adam M. Kaye, Alan David Kaye

School of Pharmacy Faculty Articles

Depression is a leading cause of disability globally, with a prevalence of 3.8% among the whole population, 5% of the adult population, and 5.7% of the elderly population over 60 years of age. There is evidence that depression is linked to certain neurodegenerative diseases, one being Alzheimer's disease (AD). The efficacy of conventional antidepressants to treat depression in AD is conflicting, especially regarding selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). A recent systemic review and meta-analysis of 25 randomized controlled trials including fourteen antidepressant medications showed no high efficacy in treating AD patients' symptoms. However, ketamine, a nonselective N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, …

Medical Visits Related To Firearm Injuries Increased During Covid-19, Rachel Chernet, Margaret K. Formica Mar 2022

Medical Visits Related To Firearm Injuries Increased During Covid-19, Rachel Chernet, Margaret K. Formica

Population Health Research Brief Series

When COVID-19 began its initial wave in the United States in March 2020, gun sales surged across the country. The increase in first time gun owners, stress, anxiety, and lack of safety training courses has corresponded with a significant increase in firearm injuries, with especially large increases in the Spring and Summer of 2020 among males, non-Hispanic Blacks, ages 20 to 29, and residents of the Midwest and South. Given the especially large rise in unintentional firearm injuries, policymakers should consider interventions that increase education, training, and regulation over safe firearm access and storage.
