The Praxis Of Realizing Election Imperatives In Trump’S America, Sayil Camacho

eJournal of Public Affairs

American democracy and higher education were not guided by the principle of equality. However, the sociopolitical history of the United States does not negate the responsibility that educators, university administrators, and policymakers maintain today. As a means to advance the praxis of civic engagement within higher education, this study details the work that was accomplished to (a) establish a nonpartisan higher education coalition in the state of Tennessee and (b) institutionalize student political learning and engagement at Vanderbilt University, Tennessee's premier research university. Tennessee is a voting restrictive state with poor educational outcomes for historically marginalized populations—this present day reality …

Vaccine Hesitancy And The Apocalypse, David M. Claborn

eJournal of Public Affairs

Some forms of vaccine hesitancy may have roots in religious beliefs about future apocalyptic events. Such beliefs engender fear of centralized governmental authority as manifest in public health mandates involving vaccines or masks. The author’s upbringing as a religious survivalist provides perspective on why some people display vaccine hesitancy. Several ways to address these fears are discussed.

Chemical And Carbon Isotopic Characterization Of A Karst-Dominated Urbanized Watershed: Case Of The Upper San Antonio River, Abongwa T. Pride, Walter Den, Aarin Teague

Water Resources Science and Technology Faculty Publications (Archived)

Urbanization and agriculture are two key factors that place demands on water resources and serve as sources of anthropogenic pollution into inland waterways. The San Antonio River, which is sourced from a karst aquifer, plays an important recreational and scenic role, yet effective management is often hampered by the lack of understanding of the chemical characterization of the water system. The karst-dominated Edwards Aquifer watershed in south-central Texas is an ideal watershed to understand water-rock interaction (carbonate dissolution) and anthropogenic impact on our water resources. In order to understand groundwater-surface water interactions, we made chemical and isotopic measurements over a …

Identifying Hypertension Interventions For Vulnerable, Urban African American Primary Care Patients: Literature Review And Patient Perspectives., Rebecca Nye, Will Lehmann, Kjersti Knox, Bonnie Bobot, Deborah Simpson

Aurora GME

Introduction/Background

Hypertension (HTN) is more prevalent in African Americans (51.7%) than white individuals (43.6%). African Americans are more likely to suffer adverse HTN consequences including cardiovascular disease and death. Among young African Americans (18-44 yo), 30% have HTN. This increased prevalence is attributable to many factors, including structural racism, distrust of the health care system, and access to care. In an urban primary care residency clinic, a disparity was noted in HTN control between young African American patients and young white patients.

Hypothesis/Aim Statement

Identity interventions associated with improved HTN control in urban, vulnerable, young (18-50 yo) African American patients …

Acute Effects Of Light Exercise On Subjectively Experienced Well-Being: Benefits In Only Three Minutes, Attila Szabo, Zoltan Gaspar, Julia Abraham

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Background: In the context of sedentary lifestyle as a major contemporary health issue, this study examined how an ultra brief exercise bout affects perceived subjective well-being. Material/Methods: Two studies were conducted. In the first study, young participants performed light exercises for 3-minutes. The second study replicated the first, but a sitting-quietly control group was also included to account for possible habituation or order effects. On a single item 10-point Likert scale, conceptualized as core affect, participants rated their well-being immediately before and after the exercise bouts and rest, respectively. Results: In both studies the exercise triggered statistically significant (p < .001) improvement in the perceived well-being (effect sizes (d) = .62 in Study I, and d = .75 in Study II), while no statistically significant change was noted in the control group. Conclusions: These findings are the first ever in the scholastic literature to demonstrate that only 3 minutes of light exercises could trigger subjective experience of improved well-being. The practical implication of these findings is that an instant boost in subjective feeling states can be achieved through very short, light, and undemanding exercises that could be repeated several times a day in different life settings.

Wait, You Don’T Have An Open Access Policy?: Passing An Oa Policy In 2021, Miriam Rigby, Franny Gaede, Catherine Flynn-Purvis, David Condon

Online Northwest

Twenty years after passing a resolution supporting open access, the University of Oregon Faculty Senate passed their first comprehensive Open Scholarship Policy. Library personnel and faculty champions collaborated in this enormous effort over two years. This demanded the recognition of new models of scholarship and the development of new workflows leveraging the institutional repository and other tools. Given faculty hesitancy and uncertainty over mandates and enforcement, significant coalition-building was difficult in the time of COVID-19, but necessary to achieve consensus. We will share our strategies for success and suggestions for how they may be replicated.

Researchers Like Money: Library Funding To Support Open Access Publishing Via Article Processing Fees, Miriam Rigby, Franny Gaede

Online Northwest

Open Access publishing is publishing, and it costs money. At the UO Libraries, one of the ways we are supporting OA publishing though a pilot Article Processing Charge Fund. It is designed to support all researchers - from undergraduates to faculty to staff - in publishing their work in fully open access journals and books. Now in its second year, we can share what works, difficulties we’ve encountered, ways we are expanding financial support for open access publishing, and how this program has facilitated advocacy for open access.
