Privacy-Preserving Formal Methods, Ning Luo Apr 2022

Privacy-Preserving Formal Methods, Ning Luo

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Software and hardware can often exhibit undesirable behaviors, leading to catastrophic consequences. Formal methods techniques offer a vast collection of techniques to analyze and verify these systems mathematically to ensure the correctness, robustness, and safety of software and hardware systems against a specification. Despite the significant success of formal methods, privacy requirements are not considered in their design. However, formal methods are often used to verify the critical components of systems, which is valuable intellectual property. In some settings, the verification requirements are often imposed by outside parties, such as regulatory agencies or software marketplaces, that the system owners do …

Neural Processing Of Static And Dynamic Eye Gaze In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Termara Parker Apr 2022

Neural Processing Of Static And Dynamic Eye Gaze In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Termara Parker

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Atypical variations in social cognitive processing of gaze are symptomatic features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that may indicate aberrant joint attention mechanisms. Despite this well-known phenomenon, neural processing of gaze in ASD in real-life social interactions remains limited. This knowledge gap may be due to the limitations of conventional neuroimaging methods that require participants to be still in a confined space with significant environmental noise, potentially eliciting anxiety and discomfort. As a result, individuals from clinical populations whose sensory needs, anxiety, or difficulties in comprehending the need to remain motionless, are less able to participate in MRI studies. Functional …

Where Is Home?, Christina O'Connell Apr 2022

Where Is Home?, Christina O'Connell

Race, Ethnicity, & Religion

“I know it is wrong to not want them to move in, but it’s the way we feel.” “If one family moves in then pretty soon there will be others.” “I think that all races should have equal opportunity. But I think they should stay within their own groups.” “Negroes and Mexicans have as much right to love as we do, but they still depreciate property.” These are all words that were written about by grandma and her two brothers when they moved to Moline, Illinois. They were born in the U.S. and had just been evicted from their apartment …

Trade, Transport And Territorial Development, Kunal Dasgupta, Arti Grover Apr 2022

Trade, Transport And Territorial Development, Kunal Dasgupta, Arti Grover

Working Papers

The spatial distribution of economic activity is known to depend on trade costs, both international and domestic. This paper examines the interplay between these external and internal trade costs using a model of trade and production that we test with the organized manufacturing sector data for India from 1989-2009. We establish that the trade liberalization episode of the early 1990s helped spread manufacturing away from the primary region (districts closest to ports) to the secondary region between 1994 and 2000. Such dispersion of activity away from primary to secondary region was driven by high internal trade costs that insulated manufacturers …

Platform Exploitation In The Sharing Economy, Abhinav Anand, Souvik Dutta, Prithwiraj Mukherjee Apr 2022

Platform Exploitation In The Sharing Economy, Abhinav Anand, Souvik Dutta, Prithwiraj Mukherjee

Working Papers

We model a revenue sharing contract between a sharing economy platform and a freelance service provider, where the latter hides revenue from the former by canceling some assignments and performing them for cash (“platform exploitation”). The platform counters this via costly, imperfect audits with endogenous success probability, and a variable payment. We show that at equilibrium, all agent types except the highest, indulge in revenue falsification. This problem is exacerbated by the principal’s ability to extract restitution from the agent.

Diversity In Corporate Boards And Firm Outcomes, Suresh Bhagavatula, Manaswini Bhalla, Manisha Goel, Balagopal Vissa Apr 2022

Diversity In Corporate Boards And Firm Outcomes, Suresh Bhagavatula, Manaswini Bhalla, Manisha Goel, Balagopal Vissa

Working Papers

We examine firm performance effects of mindset diversity among corporate directors, proxied by diversity along religion and caste, a deep-rooted institution that divides India’s Hindu society into hundreds of communities. To identify directors’ caste, we build the first data-driven mapping of last names to religion and caste at different levels of granularity. Indian corporate boards strikingly lack diversity during 1999-2015. Lower board diversity worsens firm performance and value. The strongest negative effects are for the finest caste measure, along which mindsets are likely most similar. This shows that the estimated effects of diversity depend upon the granularity of its measure.

Dipl 3120 Nuclear Weapons In International Security, Brian K. Muzás Ph.D.

Diplomacy Syllabi

This course provides a knowledge base and background for understanding contemporary international relations in which nuclear weapons play a central role. Currently, nuclear weapons policy is of critical importance in U.S. relations with Iran, Pakistan and North Korea. Questions of stockpiles, safety, proliferation and deployment have been ongoing with the Russian Federation since 1991 and with the previous Soviet Union dating back to the dawn of the atomic age. In addition, the real but often unacknowledged, nuclear strike capabilities of Israel play a critical role in shaping the dynamics of Middle East affairs. Since the A1 Qaeda attack of 9/11, …

Dipl 6002 International Organizations, Purnaka L. De Silva Ph.D.

Diplomacy Syllabi

The focus and aim of this Course - DIPL 6002: International Organizations - is to understand International Organizations from the vantage point of the concept of GlobaI Governance. Global governance, central to international relations, refers to the loose framework of global regulation - both institutional and normative that constrains conduct and attempts to maintain order. When we speak of order, we need to specify order for whom - states, peoples, groups, or individuals. Order may denote any regular or discernible pattern of relationships that are stable over time or may additionally refer to a condition that allows certain goals to …

Dipl 6704 Na Economic Development Of Africa, Fredline M’Cormack-Hale Phd Apr 2022

Dipl 6704 Na Economic Development Of Africa, Fredline M’Cormack-Hale Phd

Diplomacy Syllabi

Of the four major less developed regions in the world (East and South Asia, Latin America and Africa), Sub-Saharan Africa (hereafter SSA) has performed the worst economically since 1975. Why has this been the case? Explaining this poor economic development has occupied development theorists, aid agencies, international institutions and African governments and people alike. The focus is often on what has gone wrong; with little attention paid to the inherent strengths that African cultures and societies possess.

The purpose of this course is to examine the reasons advanced to explain the underdevelopment of Africa through a primarily political economy framework, …

A Pilot Program To Improve Patient And Family Experience Scores And Quality Of Care Of The Hispanic Population In An Urban Pediatric Emergency Department., David C. Kruger

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Problem Description: Emergency Department (ED) patients express decreased patient and family experience (PFE) scores when they feel disrespected (such as experiencing long wait times), experience ineffective communication, or have difficulty accessing care. These issues could lead to inequalities and adverse health care outcomes, especially among those of different races and ethnic backgrounds. The goal of this quality improvement (QI) project was to evaluate the PFE scores and the quality of care of the Hispanic population at a thirty-five-bed emergency department within a freestanding pediatric, academic medical center located in a large urban area.

Rationale: The theoretical framework guiding this QI …

The Role Of Risk In Farmland Contract Choices, Chelsea Arnold, Jisang Yu, Mykel Taylor, Leah H. Palm-Forster, Simanti Banerjee

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Understanding the role of risk in farmland leasing contract choices is important to assess the welfare consequences of farm policies or environmental changes that affect production risk. We use a unique dataset of landowners and tenants in Kansas to examine the role of risk in their farmland leasing contract choices. We find that greater production risk and more risk-averse landowners encourage fixed cash rent contracts. As many variables can potentially affect contract choices, we use a penalized regression to show that the inclusion of relationship variables leads to little change in the main results.
