Work-Life Balance, Aimee Lee
M.S. in Leadership
This project was to identify if there is a work-life balance in the banking industry, and how managers understand the concept. Six managers of different demographics were surveyed and the results show three important themes; that the leaders need to have great knowledge of the work and their employees, that home issues and work issues need to be separate and balanced, and that excellent communication is required of both the leaders and the employees so that everyone can advocate successfully for their needs, and the needs of the corporation. The results will be shared with the Human Resources Department to …

International Relations Textbooks And The Problem Of International Order, Stephen A. Kocs
International Relations Textbooks And The Problem Of International Order, Stephen A. Kocs
Political Science Department Faculty Scholarship
The establishment and maintenance of order—that is, of settled rules and arrangements that regulate actors’ behavior—is central to politics at all levels, including the international level. Political order, after all, is a requisite for modern human existence. Given the priority of the problem of order, the most important questions that can be addressed in an introductory International Relations (IR) course are those that concern the sources, nature, and historical evolution of international order. But a survey of conventional introductory IR textbooks reveals that these questions are typically dealt with glancingly or ignored altogether. Thus a strong case can be made …

To Certify Or Not To Certify? A Proposed Graduate Course And Universal Certification For Forensic Expert Witnesses, Charolette Caron
Criminology Student Work
During a court proceeding, attorneys will oftentimes bring up evidence related to their case. Since attorneys are usually not an expert in the field of evidence that they are discussing, they will bring in an expert witness. Expert witnesses are asked “. . . to testify in court when complex or specialized knowledge, beyond that of the lay person, is needed to interpret the evidence” (Wilcox & NicDaeid, 2018, p. 100). Forensic expert witnesses and their testimony, especially, are becoming increasingly important regarding accuracy and delivery. It’s been found that juries tend to rely heavily on forensic evidence when reaching …

Around 73% of students report experiencing a mental health crisis during college, and 64% report dropping out for mental health reasons. Research indicates that negative campus racial climate contributes to poor mental health, but few studies have examined factors that may moderate this impact. The current study examined potential moderators of the impact of negative campus racial climate on students’ mental health, including whether: (1) feeling valued and (2) belongingness at school may buffer, or reduce, risk and (3) higher racial saliency may increase risk. Data were drawn from the Healthy Minds Study, administered to a random sample of 4,000 …

Recent advancements in high-throughput technologies have enabled simultaneous inference of thousands of genes. With the abundance of public databases, it is now possible to rapidly access the results of several genomic studies, each of which includes the significance testing results of a large number of genes. Researchers frequently aggregate genomic data from multiple studies in the form of a meta-analysis. Most traditional meta-analysis methods aim at combining summary results to find signals in at least one of the studies. However, often the goal is to identify genes that are differentially expressed in a consistent pattern across multiple studies. Recently, a …

The earwigfly is a rarely seen insect in the family of scorpionflies. There are three species total, one in Brazil, one in Australia, and the third (Merope tuber), widespread throughout the eastern United states. In a 1984 study, Chris Maier collected 69 earwigflies between 1977 and 1982 from New England. Most of these were collected in July using sticky traps. He collected 43 females and 26 males (sex ratio 2.4:1). In a 2014 study, Skvarla, Hartshorn, and Dowling collected 77 earwigflies from Arkansas, mostly in August using malaise traps, pan traps, Lindgren funnels, and pitfall traps. They collected 58 females …

Funding Achievement In Kentucky, Brett Blair, James Masterson
2022 Celebration of Student Scholarship - Poster Presentations
It is no surprise that the proper education of a population ranks high on the list of important accomplishments within a society. After all, a population’s education can affect its ability to perform at a high capacity. The education of Kentucky’s children is no different. Recent years have seen large disparities in the resources available to each school in Kentucky, which could have effects on the educational output of regions in the state. Though research has been conducted on concepts such as school funding, educational quality, and education reform, this research tends to be lacking in specificity and consistency. (DeYoung, …

The objectives of this class are twofold. The first goal is to develop a critical understanding of the use of scientific research in the practice and academic study of international affairs. While we will consider issues central to all research and some unique to qualitative analysis, the emphasis in this class is quantitative research. Whether you are primarily interested in security, finance, development, trade, or social issues, much research that is likely of interest to you uses some form of quantitative analysis. This is equally true for policy reports published by the UN, World Bank, Brookings, RAND, or other relevant …

This graduate course examines the political economy of globalization and its governance. Globalization, defined as the economic, political, social, and cultural integration between countries, was growing at a rapid pace until the 2007- 2009 global financial crisis. Since then, additional events such as the Brexit referendum, US unilateralism under the Trump Administration, and the current coronavirus pandemic have demonstrated the retreat to insular policies. What forces drive globalization, and what forces slow it down? What are the social and economic impacts? Who is for globalization, and who is against it? F low do these forces drive cooperation or conflict in …

The present global health crisis is not primarily one of disease, but of governance...". Ilona Kickbusch
Public health challenges- pandemic flu, HIV & AIDS, COVID-19, obesity, neglected diseases, tobacco use, environmental degradation, and underperforming health systems- increasingly shape and are shaped by the political, economic, and social aspects of globalization. Meanwhile, international rules that fall outside the traditional health sphere- such as those governing intellectual property, agriculture, human migration, and greenhouse gas emissions- can have profound impacts on human health. While strong national health systems are critical for meeting population needs, the effects of and capacities to respond to a …

Medical Devices And Cybersecurity, Hilary Finch
School of Cybersecurity Posters
I begin by looking at the role of cybersecurity in the medical world. The healthcare industry adopted information technology quite quickly. While the advancement was obviously beneficial and necessary to keep up with an ever-growing demand, the healthcare industry did not place any kind of pointed focus on the security of their IT department, or the sensitive information housed therein.
When rapid advancements of technology outpaced the gradual advancement of hospital cybersecurity, security concerns became a difficult issue to control. There is a serious need for more advancements in hospital security. Each interconnected medical device has its own unique security …

A Global Constitutional Crisis, Sungjoon Cho
Florida State University Law Review
Justice, justice thou shalt pursue. The Trump administration has recently pushed the World Trade Organization (WTO) into a crisis by gutting its court and waging trade wars. Conventional narratives on this crisis have been state-centered as they ascribe origins of the crisis to domestic politics in key WTO members, especially the United States. This Article divulges both analytical and normative blind spots left by these narratives. This Article, in a Copernican turn, submits a system-driven alternative, in terms of the "World Trade Constitution" (WTC), which generates rich insights in both diagnosing and prescribing the crisis. The WTC, for the purpose …
