Temporal Changes And Possible Sources Of Dissolved Calcium Levels In Stream, River, And Lake Waters In Western Kentucky, Kelsie Meystedt Apr 2022

Temporal Changes And Possible Sources Of Dissolved Calcium Levels In Stream, River, And Lake Waters In Western Kentucky, Kelsie Meystedt

Scholars Week

ABSTRACT

Zebra Mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) are an exotic and invasive mollusk that spread extensively over various rivers and lakes in the United States. These mussels are known for being notorious in their “biofouling” capabilities, costing the U.S. government billions of dollars in removal operations. Recently, zebra mussel colonies were found in Kentucky Lake possibly due to human activities increasing the salinity of today’s freshwater resources. The increase in salinity from human activities may have adversely affected the ecosystems and water supplies. The Specific aim of this study was to determine the temporal trend of dissolved calcium in Kentucky Lake …

An Insight Into Nursing Retention Rate: Literature Review, Emily Najera Apr 2022

An Insight Into Nursing Retention Rate: Literature Review, Emily Najera

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

The objective of this literature review is to identify indicator of nursing turnover that could be used to guide the creation of hospital policy that incentives nurses to continue working in the hospital setting. Most nurses will struggle with the stress and burnout that comes with taking care of patients, inadequate support from administration, and lack of staffing. All of which have been magnified by the current pandemic. Hospitals cannot prevent stressful working conditions but can provide resources to retain more nurses. Examining this topic of nurse retention is crucial to the foundation and future of healthcare.

Service Based Encryption For Securing Multi-Cloud Service Chaining Deployments, Niranjan M M Apr 2022

Service Based Encryption For Securing Multi-Cloud Service Chaining Deployments, Niranjan M M

Defensive Publications Series

With the advent of cloud hosting and micro services architecture, services are becoming more distributed and span across clouds, data centres, WANs/DMZs, etc., hence providing secure connectivity and policy enforcement across a wide variety of these domains is a challenge, especially when such services are dynamically instantiated and running remotely. In such deployments, protecting sensitive information is very crucial especially with the enterprise cloud deployments. Hence, we need a secure method to provide co-ordination among cloud applications and services to share the services/resources across the registered cloud entities in service chaining deployments. There are techniques which propose secure mechanism (e.g., …

Bridging Teacher Candidates, School Communities, And The World During A Pandemic, Sarah Jean Baker, Jennice Mccafferty-Wright, A. Minor Baker, Stefanie D. Livers Apr 2022

Bridging Teacher Candidates, School Communities, And The World During A Pandemic, Sarah Jean Baker, Jennice Mccafferty-Wright, A. Minor Baker, Stefanie D. Livers

The Journal of Advancing Education Practice

The Covid-19 pandemic caused distance that separated the teacher from the learner as schools and higher education moved to virtual and flexible learning communities. Likewise, at the same time racial tensions were growing further increasing the distance and divide across the country. This positions teacher educators with the responsibility to bridge this distance.

The challenges of preparing educators for activism in a post-Covid educational context that considers cultural literacy, ethical leadership, and community engagement is explored with three narratives. These narratives provide the opportunity to think with and through our commitments in early childhood and elementary teacher education. Collectively, these …

Effect Of Library Training On Usage Of E-Databases By Students And Teaching Faculty In Private Higher Educational University., Seeta Devi Penta

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Libraries are vital in providing academic and research resources to the students and faculty working in various universities. The benefits of using e- databases are immense as these resources can be easily accessed anywhere on the educational campus or at home. Therefore, most higher academic universities facilitate e- databases and make them centrally available to their scholars. Conducting periodical training programs on the usage of e- databases is found essential. The study's objectives are to assess the effect of a library training program on the use of centrally subscribed online databases. The researcher has adopted a case study design to …

Stress Management In Nursing To Prevent Burnout And Employee Retention, Megan Mayo, Lauren R. Barto, Megan B. Trout Apr 2022

Stress Management In Nursing To Prevent Burnout And Employee Retention, Megan Mayo, Lauren R. Barto, Megan B. Trout

Scholars Week

This project was based on the fact that there is a severe nursing shortage happening in the United States. On average, nurses can have four to eight patients at one time which makes a twelve hour shift almost unbearable due to the stress of keeping all of the patients alive and satisfied with the care they are receiving. During the pandemic, staffing shortages have become one of the main issues faced by healthcare workers across the nation. Due to the staffing shortages and COVID-19 precautions, nurses have not only been taking on more patients but also have increased their workload …

Z Force On The Ground: The Canadian Deployment To Iceland, 1940-41, Steven J. Bright Apr 2022

Z Force On The Ground: The Canadian Deployment To Iceland, 1940-41, Steven J. Bright

Canadian Military History

The date of 10 May 1940 is well known for the start of the German blitzkrieg and the end of Neville Chamberlain’s tenure as British Prime Minister. That fateful day also opened a chapter in Canada’s war story that, in the end, saw more than 2,600 Canadian servicemen deployed to far-away but strategic Iceland. The Canadian commitment to that remote island from June 1940 to April 1941 was a metaphoric stepping-stone in the long Allied struggle against the Axis powers in the North Atlantic, building what ultimately became a secure strategic bridge for the deployment of the forces that liberated …

Maize Leaf Appearance Rates: A Synthesis From The United States Corn Belt, Caio L. Dos Santos, Lori J. Abendroth, Jeffrey A. Coulter, Emerson D. Nafziger, Andrew E. Suyker, Jianming Yu, Patrick S. Schnable, Sotirios V. Archontoulis Apr 2022

Maize Leaf Appearance Rates: A Synthesis From The United States Corn Belt, Caio L. Dos Santos, Lori J. Abendroth, Jeffrey A. Coulter, Emerson D. Nafziger, Andrew E. Suyker, Jianming Yu, Patrick S. Schnable, Sotirios V. Archontoulis

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The relationship between collared leaf number and growing degree days (GDD) is crucial for predicting maize phenology. Biophysical crop models convert GDD accumulation to leaf numbers by using a constant parameter termed phyllochron (°C-day leaf−1) or leaf appearance rate (LAR; leaf oC-day−1). However, such important parameter values are rarely estimated for modern maize hybrids. To fill this gap, we sourced and analyzed experimental datasets from the United States Corn Belt with the objective to (i) determine phyllochron values for two types of models: linear (1-parameter) and bilinear (3-parameters; phase I and II phyllochron, and transition …

Evaluating Differences In Mental Health Outcomes In The Transgender Community, Elizabeth Wooten Apr 2022

Evaluating Differences In Mental Health Outcomes In The Transgender Community, Elizabeth Wooten

Research and Creativity Symposium

Transgender people experience disproportionate rates of discrimination and marginalization. These negative life experiences influence mental health, such that trans people often struggle with poor mental health outcomes such as depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this study, a transgender sample was examined to see whether these mental health outcomes were different between trans men and trans women. Based on the previous research done in this area, I hypothesized that trans women would report higher rates of depression, anxiety, and PTSD. The sample was found through the paid platform Prolific, and was surveyed on these mental health outcomes using …
