Application Of Bibliotherapy By School Libraries As A Tool For Enhancement Of Reading Culture And Good Behaviors Among Students, Emmanuel Chidiadi Onwubiko
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Bibliotherapy is a concept that involves the use of books to help children cope with their life and has been widely recognized as an approach that will help librarians to better address emotional, behavioral and social concerns of children while reading on the other hand, stimulates imagination, widens views, expands horizon and helps learning about different people and places. Reading is important to human development because it is essential in full participation in the modern society. This study therefore examined the application of bibliotherapy by school libraries as a tool for enhancing reading culture and good behaviors among students. The …

A Title Vii Dead End? Machine Learning And Employee Monitoring, Kayla Burris
William & Mary Law Review Online
This Note will argue that Title VII, as courts currently apply the law, does not adequately protect employees from algorithmic discrimination when companies use machine learning to monitor their employees' computers. Part I will provide an introduction to how employee monitoring tools work, how employers are using machine learning in their monitoring programs, and how these programs can discriminate. Because scholars have already done significant work in this area, this Note will not try to replicate this research but will provide an overview of how this discrimination can occur. Parts II and III will then analyze how an employee might …

A Cascade Framework For Privacy-Preserving Point-Of-Interest Recommender System, Longyin Cui, Xiwei Wang
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Point-of-interest (POI) recommender systems (RSes) have gained significant popularity in recent years due to the prosperity of location-based social networks (LBSN). However, in the interest of personalization services, various sensitive contextual information is collected, causing potential privacy concerns. This paper proposes a cascaded privacy-preserving POI recommendation (CRS) framework that protects contextual information such as user comments and locations. We demonstrate a minimized trade-off between the privacy-preserving feature and prediction accuracy by applying a semi-decentralized model to real-world datasets.

Nationalized Cosmopolitanism With Communist Characteristics: The Esperanto Movement's Survival Strategy In Post-World War Ii Bulgaria, Ana Velitchkova
Faculty and Student Publications
The case of the Bulgarian Esperanto movement under state socialism demonstrates a social movement can survive under authoritarianism by establishing a legitimate activist culture acceptable to the regime while pursuing its intrinsic goals. Bulgaria, a close Soviet ally, was a difficult case of movement survival. In the early years following World War II, the national Esperanto periodical Bulgara Esperantisto was a key organizing tool for the movement reporting on its activities, reaching out to potential recruits, and legitimizing the movement under the new communist-led regime. Examining the periodical's discourse over a two-year period, I find that the movement managed to …

Cardiac Telehealth Rehabilitation: Empowering The Patient, Alexander James Schmidt Hoff
Cardiac Telehealth Rehabilitation: Empowering The Patient, Alexander James Schmidt Hoff
Nursing Masters Papers
Coronary artery disease or coronary heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the world. Center-based cardiac rehab has long been a sustainable answer for recovery from an acute coronary event. However, the COVID-19 pandemic halted in-person appointments for cardiac rehab patients. Therefore, patients and their healthcare team met virtually. The objective of this literature review is to discover the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of cardiac telerehabilitation, as it will likely have a more prominent role in patient recovery from acute myocardial infarctions. To determine this, a literature review was conducted based on recent studies involving coronary artery …

Neural Substrates Of Homing Pigeon Spatial Navigation: Results From Electrophysiology Studies, Gerald E. Hough
College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research
Over many centuries, the homing pigeon has been selectively bred for returning home from a distant location. As a result of this strong selective pressure, homing pigeons have developed an excellent spatial navigation system. This system passes through the hippocampal formation (HF), which shares many striking similarities to the mammalian hippocampus; there are a host of shared neuropeptides, interconnections, and its role in the storage and manipulation of spatial maps. There are some notable differences as well: there are unique connectivity patterns and spatial encoding strategies. This review summarizes the comparisons between the avian and mammalian hippocampal systems, and the …

Minimizing Workplace Violence By Initiating An Evidence-Based Community Meeting, Olivia Gabrielle Foster
Dissertations
Problem: Workplace violence (WPV) in healthcare has become an epidemic demanding change. WPV is three to four times higher in the healthcare industry compared to other workplaces. For this project, WPV will be defined as any act of physical violence from a patient to a staff member. Community meetings are one evidence-based approach to decreasing WPV in psychiatric inpatient hospitals. Methods: This descriptive observational project compared data before and after implementing a targeted WPV community meeting, including unit rules, staff and patient expectations, a definition of WPV, and medication options available to reduce anxiety and irritability. This project …

Strengthening Adolescents with Anxiety Through Drama Therapy
Jeremy Moeller
In recent years the issues associated with social anxiety have become increasingly common in adolescents. With these issues becoming more common it is important that they continue to be nurtured and helped. With so many forms of therapy though it may be hard for someone to find a practice that suits them. That is where drama therapy comes in. Drama therapy is a fairly new practice that helps these adolescents to become more expressive and engaging in their everyday lives, decrease their social anxieties, and build a new sense of confidence …
