A Neural Circuit Framework For Economic Choice: From Building Blocks Of Valuation To Compositionality In Multitasking, Aldo Battista, Camillo Padoa-Schioppa, Xiao-Jing Wang Mar 2026

A Neural Circuit Framework For Economic Choice: From Building Blocks Of Valuation To Compositionality In Multitasking, Aldo Battista, Camillo Padoa-Schioppa, Xiao-Jing Wang

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Value-guided decisions are a cornerstone of cognition, yet the underlying circuit-level mechanisms remain elusive. We used reinforcement learning to train recurrent neural network models endowed with Dale's law on a battery of economic choice tasks, which revealed a two-stage computational framework. First, value estimation occurs at the input level, where learned weights store subjective preferences and approximate the non-linear multiplication of reward magnitude and probability to yield expected values. This feedforward mechanism enables generalization to novel choice options. Second, option values are compared within the recurrent network, where specific connectivity patterns mediate robust winner-take-all decisions, with both excitatory and inhibitory …

Background. – BK polyomavirus (BKPyV) is a common opportunistic infection in kidney transplant recipients, typically reactivating in the context of immunosuppression. Although asymptomatic in immunocompetent individuals, reactivation in transplant recipients can cause BKPyV-associated nephropathy (BKPyVAN), a leading cause of graft dysfunction and loss. BKPyV viremia affects approximately 10%–15% of transplant recipients, and once BKPyVAN is established, the risk of graft failure can exceed 50%. The current standard of care involves immunosuppression reduction to restore virus-specific immunity, but this approach increases the risk of acute and chronic rejection. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg), which contains antiviral and immunomodulatory antibodies, has been proposed as …

What Can I Share—And Where? Digital Literacy, Open Licenses, And Faculty Publishing Pathways, Victoria Peters

Library Faculty Publications

Faculty create a wide range of digital materials – articles, syllabi, datasets, lecture media, public scholarship and creative work – but questions about copyright, licensing and “where this work belongs” often create barriers to sharing. This Open Education Week workshop introduces digital literacy concepts through the lens of open licenses and publishing pathways. Participants will explore how Creative Commons licenses work, how to decide what level of openness is appropriate for different kinds of work and where faculty can publish or share materials – from journals and institutional repositories to open platforms and community-aligned publishing models. Designed for a liberal …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a neurological disorder caused by loss-of-function mutations in methyl CpG binding protein 2 (MECP2), a transcriptional regulator essential for maintenance of normal neuronal function. The current FDA-approved treatment for RTT, Trofinetide, mildly alleviates some symptoms. In contrast, re-introducing MeCP2 or increasing its amount through transgenesis in mouse RTT models improves most neurological phenotypes and enhances survival. Here, we devised a therapeutic strategy to moderately increase MeCP2 protein by modulating the alternative splicing of MECP2 to switch the less efficiently translated e2 to the more efficiently translated e1 isoform. We deleted Mecp2 exon 2 (unique …

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Maps are an essential tool to inform fire governance and management. For instance, they can highlight which areas are most vulnerable to adverse fire impacts or be used to plan interventions for risk reduction and prevention. In recent years, several studies have mapped the fire management activities and the networks between the multitude of involved actors. They build upon previous advances to combine quantitative and qualitative social network analysis with geographical analysis and cartography, aiming to highlight areas of opportunity to enhance fire governance. This paper continues this line of research, examining cooperation in fire management within the south-eastern part …

The Influence Of Noise On Uk Number Plate Letter Recognition In Humans And Convolutional Neural Networks, Gunnar Schmidtmann Mar 2026

The Influence Of Noise On Uk Number Plate Letter Recognition In Humans And Convolutional Neural Networks, Gunnar Schmidtmann

School of Health Professions

UK number plates contain symbols based on the Charles Wright font. The Driver & Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA) regulations specify precise dimensions of the letters, e.g., a uniform width, leading to dissimilar distances between letter features (strokes), presumably resulting in different acuities. Using the method of constant stimuli with a single interval five alternative forced choice paradigm, we measured acuities for high-contrast DVLA letters (E, S, M, W, O), chosen based on their distinctiveness (O vs. E) and similarity (M vs. W). To assess the influence of noise, we measured acuities for letters with added Salt-and-Pepper noise (10%, 25% and …

Neuromodulating Mammals For Military Operations: Ethical Responsibility And Governance In Security Domains, Elise Annett, James Giordano Mar 2026

Neuromodulating Mammals For Military Operations: Ethical Responsibility And Governance In Security Domains, Elise Annett, James Giordano

Strategic Insights

This commentary examines ethical and governance challenges associated with the potential use of neurotechnology to influence the behavior of marine mammals for military purposes. While the use of dolphins and sea lions in naval operations has historical precedent, reports suggesting that advanced neurotechnologies may be used to modulate or control the behavior of orcas represent a significant ethical and legal inflection point. Invasive neuromodulation techniques, such as implantable neural interfaces, pharmacological modulation, or remote stimulation raise serious concerns about animal welfare, agency, and the potential dual-use implications of neurotechnology. Stronger governance frameworks, including international dialogue, Department of War policy guidance, …

An Acetylation-Dependent Switch Underlies Host Disease Tolerance During Streptococcal Infection, Sumit Kumar Paudel, Sowmya Gannavaram, Michael G Caparon, Wei Xu Mar 2026

An Acetylation-Dependent Switch Underlies Host Disease Tolerance During Streptococcal Infection, Sumit Kumar Paudel, Sowmya Gannavaram, Michael G Caparon, Wei Xu

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Building on our finding that Streptococcus pyogenes pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) suppresses host disease tolerance (DT) via short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-mediated modulation of host acetyl-CoA and IL-10 levels, we characterize the global transcriptomic and epigenetic mechanisms underlying this immunometabolic manipulation. Combining new histological and ultrastructural analyses with an in-depth re-analysis of single-cell and bulk RNA-seq datasets to more comprehensively characterize the DT response, we show that PDH deficiency is associated with broad immunologic rewiring, characterized by intracellular bacterial containment within phagocytes, expansion of pro-resolving myeloid cells, and altered cell-cell communication. Metabolic analysis of ΔPdh-infected tissues revealed a shift away from acetyl-CoA …

Longitudinal Profiling Of Tumor And Immune Compartments Uncovers Patterns Of Dysregulation And Associations With Response In Multiple Myeloma, Denis J Ohlstrom, Reyka G Jayasinghe, Yizhe Song, Ravi Vij, Li Ding, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

UNLABELLED: Multiple myeloma is a malignancy of clonally expanded plasma cells shaped by complex interactions with the immune microenvironment (IME). To investigate immune correlates of treatment response and disease progression, we conducted multi-omics profiling including CD138neg single-cell RNA sequencing of 243 bone marrow samples from 102 patients (631,226 cells) and CD138pos bulk RNA and whole-genome sequencing from 209 samples. In longitudinal analyses, interferon-γ signaling associated with markers of impaired T-cell memory after autologous stem cell transplant, whereas naïve B-cell abundance and immunoglobulin diversity correlated with improved progression-free survival (HR = 0.48; P = 2.3e-4). At disease progression, multiple myeloma cells …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and multiple sclerosis (MS) are devastating adult-onset neurological diseases with distinct pathological manifestations. Although growing evidence implicates copper dysregulation in both diseases, our understanding of this connection remains incomplete. In this study, we investigated metallothionein-3 (MT3), which is a key regulator of copper metabolism in the central nervous system (CNS), and its relationship to copper in the ALS and MS spinal cord. Using combined quantitative mass spectrometry approaches and immunohistochemical observations, we found a significant decrease in ALS and MS spinal cord MT3 levels compared to controls. This was correlated with levels of copper and MT3-copper …
