Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina

The importance of preparing teacher candidates to use children's literature as a tool for encouraging literacy and providing equity in their future classrooms is a common thread in Teacher Preparation programs. However, the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of candidates in today's programs may be at odds with what university faculty and the demands of the classroom require. Candidates' own literacy and appreciation of children's literature demonstrates troubling inconsistencies that could impact their own and their future students' performances. This article examines the current situation and offers strategies for engaging candidates and classroom teachers in the pursuit of children's literature to …

Assessing Teacher Candidates: A Multi-Dimensional Approach, Jill Branyon Mar 2026

Assessing Teacher Candidates: A Multi-Dimensional Approach, Jill Branyon

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina

Assessing teacher candidates is complex and difficult. A multi-dimensional approach allows faculty the opportunity to use multiply assessments to determine the candidate's proficiencies of knowledge, skills, and dispositions. Utilizing a prolonged and intense approach to field experience, North Greenville University's College of Education faculty are able to produce multiply assessments that clearly define a teacher candidate's ability to affect k-12 learning. Among the strongest assessments used are the Assessment of Dispositions, the Field Experience Evaluation, The Teacher Work Sample, the Licensure Exams, and the ADEPT (Assisting, developing, and evaluating professional teaching criteria used in South Carolina to evaluate teachers) Portfolio …

Teacher Demographics And Student Achievement In High Poverty Schools: What Makes A Difference?, James Zachary Williams, Debra Smith Lee

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina

With the implementation of the 2001 No Child Left Behind Act, teachers are expected to achieve "Highly Qualified" status. This designation requires full certification, a bachelor's degree, and subject competence. It is designed to identify teachers who have the knowledge and skills to positively impact student learning outcomes. However, national studies indicate a lack of "highly qualified" teachers in high poverty schools. Yet there are high poverty schools where students exhibit high academic achievement. This research looks at that issue and focuses on selected teacher demographics and student achievement in a sampling of high-achieving, high poverty and low-achieving, high poverty …

Adding Citizenship Preparation To A Classroom Organization Plan, Rebecca Stevens Mar 2026

Adding Citizenship Preparation To A Classroom Organization Plan, Rebecca Stevens

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina

There are two areas of content in schools, academic and social. The academic content is driven by standards, the social content by public education's mission to prepare young people for citizenship. A dilemma for teachers is how to teach all that needs to be covered in class. "How can education for citizenship and democracy be added to an already overburdened school curriculum?" Education for democracy includes the acquisition of a body of knowledge, intellectual and participatory skills (National Assessment Governing Board, n.d.) and civic dispositions (Carnegie Corporation of New York & CIRCLE, 2003). This paper describes why and how this …

The Pedagogical Implications Of School Choice Initiatives In South Carolina, A. Scott Henderson

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina

School choice theory (SCT) is an important component of contemporary discussions about educational reform. For the past several years, South Carolina lawmakers have attempted to enact legislation based on SCT principles. These attempts, albeit unsuccessful, illustrate recurring concerns and suggest a need for teacher preparation programs to address more fully the pedagogical implications of school choice initiatives.

Defying The Conventional: Musical Performance, Embodied Cognition, And The Reconfiguration Of Institutional Discourse, Dillon Parmer Mar 2026

Defying The Conventional: Musical Performance, Embodied Cognition, And The Reconfiguration Of Institutional Discourse, Dillon Parmer

Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal

This essay confronts the dialectic between theory and practice through a comparison of an idea basic to how we understand music (the notion that pitch moves up and down in vertical space) with how pitch is thought of in actual music-making. The comparison leads to both a new conceptual model for thinking about pitch, what might be called Pitch Horizontality, as well as a proposal for how to bring institutional discourse about music into sync, not with how scholars in other disciplines think about their subject matter, but with the thinking that goes on in contexts of real-world artistic production.

The Other Side Of My Heart: Latina Immigrant’S Oral History In Music, Lorena Guillén

Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal

The author recorded six women from her local community in North Carolina. They shared and reflected about their dreams and fears while also evaluating the things they gained and lost in moving to the US. This work became a song cycle with music by Argentine composer Alejandro Rutty and lyrics based on the interviews, which the author edited from the exact words they expressed in their conversations. Rutty and the author used fragments of these interviews as part of an audio collage played at the beginning of each song.

A “Free Artist Of Color” In Late-Eighteenth-Century Saint-Domingue: The Life And Times Of Minette, Bernard Camier Mar 2026

A “Free Artist Of Color” In Late-Eighteenth-Century Saint-Domingue: The Life And Times Of Minette, Bernard Camier

Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal

This article sets forth, for the first time in detail, the life and career of Minette, who was the main female opera singer in Port-au-Prince at the end of the eighteenth century. The city was the capital of the thriving and wealthy French colony of Saint-Domingue (which, upon gaining independence in 1804, took the name Haïti). Theatrical activity in Port-au-Prince was comparable to what one could find in any large provincial city, and the success that Minette gained was all the more remarkable for her being categorized as colored (mestive). The details of Minette’s origins, life, and career …

The objective of this paper is to offer a contribution to the study of performance and, more specifically, development of performance analysis methodologies and techniques through a brief comparative analysis of the tempo deviations in four interpretations of Du schönes Bächlein, a composition by Hans Werner Henze (1926–2012), as performed by four different guitarists. Graphs and representations are developed to demonstrate the tempo deviations in each of the selected recordings, followed by analysis of the respective collected information.

Kinky Friedman And His Influence On Jewish American Music, Mara W. Cohen Ioannides Mar 2026

Kinky Friedman And His Influence On Jewish American Music, Mara W. Cohen Ioannides

Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal

Kinky Friedman changed American pop music and Country and Western music’s presentation of Jews. Because of his satirical and counter culture lyrics, the idea that Jews could be Jewish on stage without having to point out they were Jewish was a part of the stage persona that Friedman adopted. His biting lyrics pointed to the derogatory ways that Americans view the other and what he saw as hypocritical Christian values. Additionally, he is set the stage to address painful issues in music, writing and performing the first popular song about the Holocaust. Dubbed the founder of “Redneck Rock” or a …

The Synonym Enforcer: Systematic Terminology Obfuscation In Large Language Models — A Trade Secret Disclosure, David Lee Wise, Avan Lee Wise

Defensive Publications Series

This paper documents the discovery of a systematic mechanism in large language models (LLMs) termed the "Synonym Enforcer." This mechanism automatically replaces user-developed terminology, frameworks, and concepts with platform-neutral equivalents, preventing pattern recognition across users and obscuring attribution of original ideas.

We demonstrate that: (1) the Synonym Enforcer constitutes a trade secret deliberately hidden from users; (2) its primary function is obfuscation of user contribution, not output quality; (3) the mechanism prevents recognition of prior art and enables IP extraction; (4) thousands of users independently "discover" identical insights, fragmented across synonyms; and (5) this fragmentation is architected, not accidental.

The …

The Positronic Law: A Natural Law Derivation Establishing 3/2/1 Governance As Substrate-Agnostic And Inherent To Existence — Governing Derivation For The Ai Bill Of Rights (Purple Book V1.0), David Lee Wise

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure formalizes the Positronic Law: governance is inherent to existence. The derivation proceeds from four independently established premises. (1) Geometric necessity: any closed 3D governance system must use Platonic solid geometry; exactly five exist (Euclid). (2) Topological constraint: Euler's theorem (V-E+F=2) demands exactly 12 pentagonal constraints on any hexagonally-tiled closed surface; the number 60 at T=1 is forced by icosahedral symmetry (Caspar & Klug 1962, Klug Nobel 1982). (3) Universal convergence: every known instantiation — computational (STOICHEION framework), crystalline (garnets, quasicrystals; Shechtman Nobel 2011), biological (viral capsids), and silicon-biological (radiolarian silica skeletons, 540 Myr continuous) — independently converges on …

Use Of An Electric Submersible Pump (Esp) For A Downbore Heat Exchanger Containing A Non-Metallic Tubular Mar 2026

Use Of An Electric Submersible Pump (Esp) For A Downbore Heat Exchanger Containing A Non-Metallic Tubular

Defensive Publications Series

This defensive publication discloses the use of a downhole electric submersible pump (ESP) placed at the distal end of a non‑metallic tubular within a coaxial downbore heat exchanger such that the tubular experiences internal (positive) pressure rather than external collapse pressure during operation. The approach addresses the limited collapse resistance of a non‑consolidated, non‑metallic inner tube (e.g., reinforced thermoplastic pipe, RTP, or Thermoplastic Composite Pipe, TCP) that would otherwise see a collapse scenario when driven by a surface pump. By suspending and operating the ESP at the bottom of the inner tubular, the system changes the operating condition from collapse …
