Knowledgable Births: Advancing Informed Consent In Maternal Healthcare, Ella A. Forrester
Knowledgable Births: Advancing Informed Consent In Maternal Healthcare, Ella A. Forrester
Senior Theses
Background:
Informed consent is both a legal requirement and an ethical cornerstone of healthcare, ensuring that patients understand and voluntarily agree to medical treatments. However, evidence suggests that the informed consent process is often inadequately implemented in maternal healthcare settings, particularly during childbirth. While giving birth, women retain full decision-making capacity but are not consistently provided with sufficient information or support to exercise this right. Contributing factors include ineffective patient–provider communication, limited health literacy, and insufficient access to culturally responsive educational resources.
Methods:
This study aimed to address gaps in accessible prenatal education by developing an online resource platform, Know …
Reevaluating Pediatric Concussion Recovery: The Need For Comprehensive Psychological Assessments, Jolie L. Slobodin
Reevaluating Pediatric Concussion Recovery: The Need For Comprehensive Psychological Assessments, Jolie L. Slobodin
Senior Theses
Pediatric concussions represent a significant public health concern due to their complex and often long-lasting effects on the developing brain. Although concussion is classified as a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), growing evidence indicates that children and adolescents experience psychological, cognitive, and academic difficulties that extend beyond physical symptom resolution. While somatic and cognitive symptoms often predominate in the acute phase of recovery, emotional and behavioral concerns frequently emerge or persist later, yet remain inconsistently evaluated in standard concussion care. This thesis examines the psychological, cognitive, and academic outcomes of pediatric concussion and evaluates whether current assessment practices capture the …
The Digital Divide: Voter Perceptions In The Age Of Social Media, Molly E. Griffin
The Digital Divide: Voter Perceptions In The Age Of Social Media, Molly E. Griffin
Senior Theses
This thesis examines how social media shapes voter perceptions of candidate ideology and economic issues, and how these perceptions influence electoral decision-making. As digital platforms increasingly serve as primary sources of political information, exposure to negative content and patterns such as doom-scrolling can affect voters’ understanding of political realities. The study explores how social media reinforces preexisting beliefs, amplifies stereotypes, and creates echo chambers that shape both perceptions and choices in elections. Using survey data on US senators collected during the 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2022 election cycles, the research investigates the mechanisms by which digital media influence voter behavior. …

The Pharmacogene Variation Consortium (PharmVar) provides nomenclature for the highly polymorphic human N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2) gene. NAT2 metabolizes several clinically used drugs including isoniazid, hydralazine, amifampridine, procainamide, and sulfonamides such as dapsone, and also some highly carcinogenic arylamines. Systematic nomenclature describing NAT2 variation is essential for pharmacogenetic testing, genotype interpretation, and translation to phenotype in research and clinical settings. This GeneFocus provides an overview of NAT2 variation and describes important changes to its star allele-based nomenclature that were made as it was transitioned to PharmVar in March 2024. We also highlight and discuss challenges regarding the characterization of allelic variation …

Exploring The U.S. Public Service Employees’ Experiences With Gamified Cybersecurity Awareness Training, Bisola Adepoju
Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the U.S. public service employees' experiences with gamified cybersecurity awareness training. The primary research question guiding this inquiry was: How do U.S. public service employees make sense of their lived experiences with gamified cybersecurity awareness training? Two secondary questions examined what aspects of the training employees perceive as meaningful or disengaging, and how they interpret their motivation, engagement, and cybersecurity awareness during training. I chose an interpretive qualitative research design grounded in a constructivist paradigm and purposefully selected 11 U.S. public service employees who had participated in gamified cybersecurity awareness training. …

Price Discovery On Decentralized Exchanges, Agostino Capponi, Ruizhe Jia, Shihao Yu
Price Discovery On Decentralized Exchanges, Agostino Capponi, Ruizhe Jia, Shihao Yu
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Decentralized exchanges (DEXs) allow traders to express their willingness to pay for quick execution through a public priority fee bidding mechanism. We provide evidence that high-fee DEX trades are more informative and contribute more to price discovery. Using address-level blockchain transaction data, we show that informed traders persistently bid higher fees to secure early execution, revealing a strong willingness to pay for execution priority. Further, analysis of Ethereum mempool data demonstrates that informed traders employ a “jump bidding” strategy, placing high initial bids to deter potential competitors.

Clay retains histories; the memory of each action it experiences is depicted on its surface and in its form. I am a potter focused on making objects that capture these moments. Pinching, scraping, trimming, throwing, and carving expose tooth and excavate form, revealing the qualities of the material and showing the marks of handwork. As a potter, I am interested in participating in a history of vessel making and understanding making through an interpretation of the historic object. The work acts as an archive, accumulating information about process, materials, and a greater context of elder objects. Integrating these vocabularies creates …

Strategizing Environmental Preparedness In West Virginia, Molly Ann Hardy
Strategizing Environmental Preparedness In West Virginia, Molly Ann Hardy
Graduate Student Scholarship
The environmental justice (EJ) movement recognizes that environmental harms and goods are not equitably distributed, especially in regions that have faced historical marginalization, structural inequalities, and extractive exploitation, such as Appalachia. In West Virginia, the only state fully contained within the Appalachian region, a changing climate and the legacy of extractive industry have scarred the landscape and its people. All 55 counties have experienced floods, totaling more than 2,000 flash flood events, and each county has been declared a federal flood disaster site at least nine times. As of 2020, 21% of bridges maintained by the West Virginia Division of …

Optometry Associations And The Free Rider Problem Revisited, Matthew Mullis, Joshua Hall, Edgar Orozco
Graduate Student Scholarship
Members of professional associations pay dues to professional associations for a variety of reasons, including lobbying. This can lead to a free-rider problem if non-members enjoy the benefits without paying. Using 2023 data from 30 states, we revisit earlier work on the free-riding problem by analyzing how continuing education requirements, number of optometrists, benefit salience, and legal services affect membership rates. We find no significant relationship between continuing education hours or total optometrists and membership percentages. We introduce two variables measuring selective incentives: salience of advertised benefits and availability of legal services. Legal services exhibit a negative association with membership …

Promoting Methane Reductions Through Behavioural Nudges And Informational Boosts: A Field Choice Experiment In Japanese Rice Farming, Shengyi Du, Katsuya Tanaka, Hiroki Sasaki, Tetsuya Horie, Shinya Horie
Center for Public Service Publications and Reports
Agricultural methane emissions represent a significant contributor to global climate change, with irrigated rice cultivation beingone of the primary sources. Despite the availability of effective mitigation technologies, their adoption often remains limited dueto behavioural and institutional constraints. Water management practice that extends drainage periods during cultivation cancurb methane emissions from irrigated rice at low cost, yet uptake among Japanese farmers remains modest. We surveyed 2219rice producers in Shiga Prefecture using a labelled choice experiment that embedded two behavioural nudges (social norm andloss aversion) and one informational boost (knowledge enhancement), presented with or without a reminder. Farmers most fa-voured a 7-day …

What We Hear Shapes What We Fear: Public Discourse As A Determinant Of Health, Amanda L. Almond
Open Educational Resources
This resource presents a structured assignment designed for undergraduate health psychology and interdisciplinary courses. Students systematically collect and analyze public discourse as a determinant of health using a shared dataset, followed by instructor-led synthesis and application of scientific reasoning.
The assignment emphasizes mechanism-based explanation, including how communication environments shape stress, perception, and health behavior. A second phase explicitly integrates the scientific method, guiding students to evaluate claims, distinguish correlation from causation, and consider what evidence would be required to test observed patterns.
This assignment was developed and implemented in a Hispanic-Serving Institution during Spring 2026, in response to real-time conditions …
