The Living Archive: Photography, Social Media, And The New Frontier Of Activism, Lundyn C. Herring Mar 2026

The Living Archive: Photography, Social Media, And The New Frontier Of Activism, Lundyn C. Herring

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis seeks to analyze the discursive field and technology of photography and its multi-faceted role in the oppression of colonized people under Western imperialism. Among the main collection highlights of many established state-run archival institutions are photographic records consisting of surveillance images, mugshots, and other visual media as representations of the political hegemony that is exerted over governed peoples. From the mid-19th century to 2026, much has shifted in the realm of photography with the introduction of smartphones, accessible technology, and social media platforms during the beginning of the twenty-first century. As states and powerholders apply the technology of …

Prosecutorial Philosophy And Racial Disparities In Arrest Rates, Carl L. Reeds Mar 2026

Prosecutorial Philosophy And Racial Disparities In Arrest Rates, Carl L. Reeds

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The prominent issue of racial disparities in arrest in the criminal justice system is well documented. One proposed mechanism for addressing these disparities in the criminal justice system is the emergence of progressive prosecutors. Progressive prosecutors are vastly different than traditional prosecution through the approach to their roles in the criminal justice system. Traditional prosecutors prioritize convictions and punishment, often seeking maximum sentences for defendants and relying on the traditional model of tough-on-crime policies. Progressive prosecutors pledge to reform the criminal justice system by declining to prosecute certain low-level offenses, expanding diversion programs, and explicitly addressing racial and socioeconomic disparities. …

District Leadership Influence On The Sustainability Of Dual Language Bilingual Education Programs, Jessica Hessler Mar 2026

District Leadership Influence On The Sustainability Of Dual Language Bilingual Education Programs, Jessica Hessler

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Dual language bilingual education programs operate within policy environments that often constrain their long term viability, despite their deep historical roots in the United States. This qualitative study examined how district/central office leadership systems supported the sustainability of these programs. While prior research has emphasized school site collaboration between principals and teachers, limited attention has been given to the district/central office level leadership systems and strategies that shaped program coherence, implementation, and endurance. Guided by a framework integrating social justice leadership with principles of sustainable leadership, the study examined the research question: How do district or central office leadership systems …

Netflix, Between Intercultural Exchange And Monopolizing Tendencies: Streaming Consumption, Production, And Distribution In Romania, Ana-Maria Calancea Mar 2026

Netflix, Between Intercultural Exchange And Monopolizing Tendencies: Streaming Consumption, Production, And Distribution In Romania, Ana-Maria Calancea

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the development and involvement of the SVOD platform Netflix in Romania in the context of a global media corporation engaging with a local market. Romania’s status as a former communist country acts as a good case study highlighting the long-term consequences of diverse content deprivation. I argue that in a country such as Romania, a service like Netflix can provide a so-called indirect intercultural exchange through the production and distribution of easily accessible diverse content, whether that diversity stems from nationality, ethnicity, race, sexuality, or any unconventional form of expression that was restricted or censored in the …

Clinical Features, Laboratory Characteristics, And Outcomes Of Covid-19 Patients In A Tertiary Care Reference Hospital In Panama City, Panama. A Retrospective Observational Study, Santiago E. Hernandez Bojorge Mar 2026

Clinical Features, Laboratory Characteristics, And Outcomes Of Covid-19 Patients In A Tertiary Care Reference Hospital In Panama City, Panama. A Retrospective Observational Study, Santiago E. Hernandez Bojorge

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Latin America experienced some of the world’s highest COVID-19 mortality rates, yet data on in-hospital outcomes and their social and geographic determinants remain limited. This dissertation investigated multilevel baseline factors associated with in-hospital mortality among adults with COVID-19 at Panama’s largest public tertiary hospital (Hospital Santo Tomás), integrating survival, mediation, and spatial-temporal modeling within a causal-inference framework.

A retrospective cohort of 1,526 RT-PCR–confirmed COVID-19 hospitalizations (May 2020–November 2021) was analyzed using multivariable Cox proportional-hazards, Fine–Gray competing-risk, mediation, and Bayesian spatial models. Directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) pre-specified causal relationships and minimally sufficient adjustment sets. DAG-guided models quantified total effects without conditioning …

Energetic Diversity In Retinal Ganglion Cells Is Modulated By Neuronal Activity And Correlates With Resilience To Degeneration, Zelun Wang, Christopher Zhao, Shelly Xu, Minglei Zhao, Sean Mccracken, Rajendra S Apte, Philip R Williams

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Neuronal function requires high energy expenditure that is likely customized to meet specific signaling demands. However, little is known about diversity of metabolic homeostasis among divergently-functioning types of neurons. To this end, we examined retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), a population of closely related, yet electrophysiologically distinct excitatory projection neurons. Using in vivo 2-photon imaging to measure ATP with single cell resolution, we identified differential homeostatic energy maintenance in the RGC population that correspond to distinct RGC types. In the presence of circuit activity, the most active RGC type (Alpha RGCs), had lower homeostatic ATP levels than other types and exhibited …

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing public health threat, and we currently lack accurate measures to track and trend this resistance. We developed the antibiotic resistance index (ARI) that aggregates resistance of Gram-negative bacilli (GNB) into a single metric which can be tracked across healthcare settings and over time.

METHODS: Culture data were collected from adult patients who met the CDC adult sepsis event criteria across 10 Barnes-Jewish HealthCare (BJC) hospitals between January 2018 and December 2023. An antibiotic's effective spectrum (AES) was calculated as the ratio of susceptible GNB to all identified GNB. The ARI was calculated as …

System For Automated Offer Generation With Transaction Classification And Interactive Guidance, Morgan Robins, Matthew Miceli Mar 2026

System For Automated Offer Generation With Transaction Classification And Interactive Guidance, Morgan Robins, Matthew Miceli

Defensive Publications Series

Systems for generating employment offers can involve manual data entry, which may be inefficient and introduce errors that can lead to delays in a hiring process. An automation framework may be integrated within a host platform, for example, an applicant tracking system, to programmatically generate employment offer documents. The system can ingest data from various sources, such as approved requisitions and candidate profiles, and can use configurable schemas to populate offer templates. The framework could also include a logic engine to classify a transaction type, a validation module to audit an offer against business rules, and an interactive interface to …

Visual Search Application Content Matching Publication, Thomas Mccolgan

Defensive Publications Series

A system and method for generating application installation advertisements based on visual search queries. The approach involves receiving an image input and performing content or entity recognition to identify objects within the image. An index of in-app content is maintained, linking visual or entity information to deep links within applications. The system matches the recognized visual query to specific in-app content and dynamically generates an advertisement. Upon user interaction, the advertisement facilitates the installation of the corresponding application and directly navigates the user to the matched content through a deferred deep link.  Keywords: Visual search, application installation, deep linking, content …

Yu Dafu In The Guangdong Peasant Movement And His Promotion Of “Peasant Literature And Art”, Bo Feng Mar 2026

Yu Dafu In The Guangdong Peasant Movement And His Promotion Of “Peasant Literature And Art”, Bo Feng

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

In 1926, Yu Dafu traveled twice to Guangdong, the center of peasant movement. His interactions with the leaders of the Communist Party of China's the Rural Movement enriched his political experience and deepened his understanding of the national revolution. Amidst the debates over the proletarian literature, Yu Dafu distinguished between pastoral literature and peasant literature, advocating for the latter in his publications such as Flood, The People and Literaturo por Homaro. His original theorization of “peasant literature and art” reflected the early peasant movement theory of the Communist Party of China, offering a vivid interpretation of political praxis …

Critique Of Anonymous Advertisements Written By Modern Chinese Writers, Linxiang Peng Mar 2026

Critique Of Anonymous Advertisements Written By Modern Chinese Writers, Linxiang Peng

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Modern Chinese literature emerged and developed amidst the clamor of advertisements. Many modern writers were deeply engaged in the production of books and periodicals, contributing numerous advertisements that not only promoted these publications but also played a role in shaping the development of modern Chinese literature. Owing to the practical nature of literary advertisements, conventional practices such as anonymity, and particular narrative strategies, many of these advertisements have remained unpublished works by modern writers. Although notable progress has been made in discovering and interpreting these texts, further examination is both urgent and promising for deepening our understanding of modern Chinese …

Between Autonomy And Heteronomy: The Historical Evolution Of Modern German Music Criticism, Kun Bi Mar 2026

Between Autonomy And Heteronomy: The Historical Evolution Of Modern German Music Criticism, Kun Bi

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This article systematically traces the historical development and theoretical transformation of modern German music criticism, revealing the core contradictions of artistic modernity embedded within it. In the Enlightenment, music criticism acquired its public-sphere attributes, consolidating the conflict between the aesthetics of genius and rule-based poetics, as well as the initial tension between aesthetic and social references. In the Romantic era, criticism assumes a more productive character, transcending interpretive frameworks and transforming itself from instrumental analysis into a dynamic artistic mechanism. By the second half of the nineteenth century, it had begun to establish historical standards, and by the twentieth century, …

Implementing Labor Plans To Increase Labor Satisfaction, Allyson G. Johnson, Emma G. Hancock, Kinley Edwards

Scholars Week

This scholarly presentation examines the implementation of a standardized birth plan tool within a healthcare facility to improve maternal birth satisfaction. The project focuses on enhancing patient-provider communication, supporting shared decision-making, and ensuring that patient preferences are clearly documented and respected throughout labor and delivery. Findings suggest that integrating a structured birth plan tool may increase maternal satisfaction and promote more patient-centered obstetric care.

Reducing 30-Day Readmissions: Simplifying Discharge, Olivia Hibbs Mar 2026

Reducing 30-Day Readmissions: Simplifying Discharge, Olivia Hibbs

Scholars Week

Hospital readmissions within 30 days remain a major challenge for healthcare systems and are often linked to ineffective discharge communication and low patient health literacy. Improving discharge planning through simplified instructions, early education, and the teach-back method can help ensure patients understand their medications, follow-up care, and warning signs after leaving the hospital. Strengthening communication and care coordination during the transition from hospital to home may improve patient outcomes and reduce preventable readmissions.

Lawyers’, Law Professors’ And Law Students’ Free Speech: The Rule Of Law, Civility, And Informed Engagement, Eli Wald Mar 2026

Lawyers’, Law Professors’ And Law Students’ Free Speech: The Rule Of Law, Civility, And Informed Engagement, Eli Wald

Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development

(Excerpt)

The Article is organized as follows. Part I summarizes the traditional doctrine governing lawyers’ free speech, as well as the related doctrines of free speech, academic freedom, and tenure on college campuses. Part II explores twenty-first century developments that have thrown these old established doctrines into a state of flux.

Part III consists of three sections. The first suggests a new understanding of lawyers’ free speech, arguing that unprecedented twenty-first-century attacks on the rule of law justify recognizing a third, narrowly tailored restriction on lawyers’ free speech. In addition to the traditional restrictions grounded in protecting clients from lawyers’ …

Some Thoughts About Free Speech And Hostile Environment Discrimination On College Campuses, Mark Tushnet Mar 2026

Some Thoughts About Free Speech And Hostile Environment Discrimination On College Campuses, Mark Tushnet

Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development

(Excerpt)

Section I examines which kinds of utterances may be considered in determining whether a hostile environment exists, and how those utterances may be taken into account. After distinguishing between targeted utterances directed at an identifiable individual and general statements that disparage a racial or nation-origin group, this Section focuses on targeted utterances.

Section II then turns to general statements, typically of a more clearly political sort. After describing the quite limited nature under which individuals can be held liable for general statements, the Section argues that such statements can be part of the “dossier” relevant to hostile environment discrimination, …

The First Amendment, Student Protest On Campus And The Law, Gene Policinski Mar 2026

The First Amendment, Student Protest On Campus And The Law, Gene Policinski

Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development

(Excerpt)

After a brief background on the history of student protest and free expression, this Article examines campus speech policies developed in response to student protests in the 1960s, and present examples of how these codes and regulations recently have been reviewed and revised in light of campus protests and disruptions, with many involving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Next, this Article also examines the ongoing impact of federal legislation—specifically Titles VI and IX of the Civil Rights Act of 1964—on campus speech. In addition, this section addresses public attitudes regarding campus protests and related on campus issues, as well as an …

Diversity Is More Than Non-Discrimination: Groupthink In Higher Education, Adam Goldstein, Sean Stevens, Nathan Honeycutt Mar 2026

Diversity Is More Than Non-Discrimination: Groupthink In Higher Education, Adam Goldstein, Sean Stevens, Nathan Honeycutt

Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development

(Excerpt)

In this Article, we seek to advance three claims. First, intellectual diversity is an essential bulwark against groupthink. Second, conflating intellectual diversity and non-discrimination undermines both concepts. Third, intellectual diversity should be pursued for its own sake and recognized as a separate and important goal of higher education.

We begin by sharing a set of definitions to identify the problem more precisely. Next, we examine the stakes of groupthink setting in. Then, we will introduce some of FIRE’s research on campus climate, which suggests the presence of an existing monoculture. Through the lens of a case study at Harvard …

Free Speech, The University, And The Wrong Turn In The Road, Donald Downs Mar 2026

Free Speech, The University, And The Wrong Turn In The Road, Donald Downs

Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development

(Excerpt)

I introduce this Article by examining the present state of campus free speech policy and politics. I pose questions raised by the demonstrations that erupted in the wake of the war between Israeli and Iranian proxies on October 7, 2023. I then present a skeletal model of the liberal university, followed by a discussion of how illiberal forms of free speech logic have influenced and shaped thinking in higher education and elsewhere since the 1960s. I conclude with a critique of higher education’s turn turning away from a liberal model of discourse.
