The Right Way To Pay Intercollegiate Student-Athletes: A Legal Risk Analysis, Ian K. Schumaker, Leeann M. Lower-Hoppe
Denver Sports & Entertainment Law Journal
“How should student-athletes get paid?” This is the next big question in the intercollegiate sport industry. While the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) fights relentlessly to protect the amateurism of intercollegiate athletics, public pressure continues to mount for establishing a method of paying student-athletes beyond scholarships and educational expenses. There are two compensation methods frequently discussed by the media, fans and practitioners in the industry: 1) compensating student-athletes through the university, or 2) compensating student-athletes through their name, image and likeness (NIL).
Method I gives rise to legal issues pertaining to Title IX, Fair Labor Standards Act, worker’s compensation, vicarious …

Skidmore V. Led Zeppelin: Changing Music Infringement Analysis In The Ninth Circuit Case Comment, Alexander R. Wolfe
Denver Sports & Entertainment Law Journal
In 2014, Michael Skidmore (“Skidmore”), as Trustee for the estate of Randy Craig Wolfe (“Wolfe”), filed an action claiming that the opening notes in Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven were copied from Spirit’s 1967 song Taurus. Six years later, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit (the “court”), sitting en banc, overturned its earlier ruling and reinstated the jury verdict in favor of Led Zeppelin. The court found that the scope of the copyright in Taurus was defined by the single page of sheet music deposited with the copyright office because the Copyright Act of 1909, rather …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
A comparative cross-sectional study aimed to describe the epidemiological data of canine urate urolithiasis in Thailand by evaluating the change in proportion over the year and identifying risk-associated factors, including age, breed, sex, and neutered status, through comparisons with multiple comparison groups. The urate and non-urate group was dogs whose uroliths were submitted from Thailand to the Minnesota Urolith Center between 2016 and 2023, and the hospital group was dogs that were visited at the Small Animal Hospital, Chulalongkorn University, between 2020 and 2023. Of 6,171 canine urolith submissions, 210 samples (3.4%) were urate-containing uroliths submitted from twenty-eight canine breeds. …

Reproductive Performance And Its Association With Esr, Prlr, Fshb Genes In Indigenous “I” Pigs, Do Duc Luc, Phan Thi Tuoi, Nguyen Thai Anh, Do Thi Hue, Nguyen Hoang Thinh
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Improving the reproductive performance of sows plays an important role in the pig industry, and it applies not only to commercial pigs but also to indigenous pigs. In this study, the polymorphisms of three genes, namely estrogen receptor (ESR), prolactin receptor (PRLR), and follicle-stimulating hormone beta subunit (FSHB) in the “I” pig population were investigated, and their associations with reproductive performance were evaluated. Ear tissue samples were collected from 151 fattening pigs and 126 sows across breeding farms in Vietnam for polymorphisms of the ESR, PRLR and FSHB genes. Three genotypes (AA, AB, and BB) were detected at the …

Incidence Of High Volume Residual Gastric Content In Perioperative Patients Taking Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists, And Its Dependence On The Duration Of Preoperative Fasting And Drug Holding: A Prospective Observational Study, Marissa Huggins, Ion Hobai
Cumberland Medica
Background: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), including semaglutide and dulaglutide, are increasingly prescribed for type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity. These agents delay gastric emptying and have been associated with a higher incidence of unexpected full stomachs in procedural patients. To prevent pulmonary aspiration, current recommendations include extending preoperative fasting (e.g., 24 hours instead of the standard 8 hours) and/or withholding the GLP-1RA medication before surgery (≥1 drug half-lives). However, the efficacy of these strategies have remained unclear and are evaluated in this study.
Hypothesis: GLP-1RA use in surgical patients is associated with increased incidence and volume of residual gastric …

CHEMISTRY AND CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
The aim of this work was to obtain solid extractants by impregnating the organic reagent 1-phenyl-1,3-butadione (BNA) onto carriers based on styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers (PAD600, PAD400) as well as activated carbon, and to investigate the sorption isotherms of La³⁺ ions under static conditions. The structure of the sorbents before and after La³⁺ ion sorption was studied using SEM-EDX and IR spectroscopy. The parameters of sorption extraction of La³⁺ ions, including extraction degree, sorbent capacity, and distribution coefficient, were evaluated. It was established that the PAD600-BNA sorbent exhibits the most favorable sorption properties toward La3+ ions.

Classification Of Land Cover In Sentinel-2 Imagery Using Machine Learning Models, Ehsan Ali Al-Zubaidi, Mohammed Ridha Hammoodi, Ahmed Naser Alzurfi
Al-Bahir
Remote sensing data of medium resolution are commonly used to classify land cover, and machine learning (ML) models have taken on a central aspect in the necessary data analysis. Ordinarily, land cover is coded on a pixel basis on the basis of Digital Number (DN) values, which in turn are computed across several spectral bands. This paper is concerned with land cover mapping in Mosul, Iraq, based on satellite images captured by Sentinel-2. Two platforms featuring unsupervised classification algorithms were used, Google Earth Engine and ArcMap, making it possible to use K-means and X-means in Google Earth Engine and ISO …

Essays On Monetary-Fiscal Interactions In Emerging Market And Developing Economies, Ojasvita Bahl
Essays On Monetary-Fiscal Interactions In Emerging Market And Developing Economies, Ojasvita Bahl
Doctoral Theses
This thesis contains three chapters on monetary-fiscal interactions in Emerging Market and Developing Economies. Governments in emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs) frequently intervene in agricultural markets to stabilize food prices following adverse shocks. These interventions often take the form of large-scale food procurement and redistribution, which we define as a redistributive policy shock. This chapter examines the effects of such shocks on inflation and the distribution of consumption between rich and poor households. We develop a tractable two-sector, two-agent New Keynesian DSGE model and estimate its parameters for the Indian economy using Bayesian methods. Our findings reveal that under …
Suffering In The Present-Eternal: Kierkegaardian Absurd Faith, Despair, And The Dark Night Of The Soul, Jackson Price
Suffering In The Present-Eternal: Kierkegaardian Absurd Faith, Despair, And The Dark Night Of The Soul, Jackson Price
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
This paper examines the meaning of suffering in relation to faith through a dialogue between Søren Kierkegaard’s accounts of despair and absurd faith and St. John of the Cross’s doctrine of the Dark Night of the Soul. Drawing on The Sickness Unto Death and Fear and Trembling, it argues that Kierkegaard’s conception of the self as a synthesis grounded in God provides a metaphysical and existential framework for interpreting the Dark Night as a divinely initiated process of purification. In both thinkers, suffering is not merely a psychological burden but the site in which the self is stripped of …
