Protection Vs. Progression: A Macroeconomic Approach To Military Expenditure Direct Effects On Social Outcomes Using Ihdi Measures, Connor Graham
Protection Vs. Progression: A Macroeconomic Approach To Military Expenditure Direct Effects On Social Outcomes Using Ihdi Measures, Connor Graham
Global Tides
This study examines whether military expenditure reduces inequality-adjusted human development and how national governance quality moderates these effects. Using panel data covering 121 countries from 2010-2023, two-way fixed effects models are employed to estimate the relationship between military spending and the Inequality-Adjusted Human Development Index (IHDI). Three key findings emerge from the analysis based on the resulting data. First, a one percentage point increase in military spending reduces IHDI by 0.0012-0.0015 points. Second, the effects prove seven times larger in developed countries than in developing ones, which runs contrary to expectations and prior literature. Lastly, political stability emerged as a …

The Royal And Divine Garden: Cherubim And Vegetation Imagery In Solomon’S Temple And The Ancient Near East, Jack W. Sulewski
Global Tides
Solomon’s Temple is described in significant detail in 1 Kings and 2 Chronicles. It may surprise the reader to know that virtually all iconography included in the Temple’s design were standard forms of communicating religious concepts in the Ancient Near East. This can present some theological problems. Is Israel’s “use" of other pagan nations' religious symbolism an issue when communicating the holiness of God? To understand further the relationship between culture, politics, and Ancient Near Eastern religion, I spent one month doing archival research in England’s multiple museums analyzing ANE object collections. Through a report of my work, this essay …

Damar Hamlin’s heart stopped beating after a routine Monday Night Football game tackle. This event caught the nation's attention, and the National Football League (NFL) promised to care for Hamlin’s long-term health needs. While Hamlin miraculously recovered, the tragic reality is that neither the NFL nor Hamlin’s team were legally required to provide Hamlin with long-term healthcare or a pension. Countless former NFL players suffer through long-term health challenges with little support from the NFL. This Article examines the current state of healthcare for NFL players. The Article considers NFL players' unique long-term health challenges and why they deserve special …
Representations Of Law And Race Revisited: An Updated Survey Of Recent American Film, Cynthia D. Bond
Representations Of Law And Race Revisited: An Updated Survey Of Recent American Film, Cynthia D. Bond
Denver Sports & Entertainment Law Journal
This article revisits the author’s Laws of Race/Laws of Representation: The Construction of Race and Law in Contemporary American Film, 11 Univ. Tex. Rev. of Sports and Ent. L. 219 (2010), surveying recent developments in mainstream films’ depiction of the interrelated narratives of law and race. This article applies to current film the 2010 article’s paradigm, which articulated three key narrative aspects of depictions of race and law in popular film: 1.) the raced construction of the lawyer-hero; 2.) the denial or displacement of the law’s role in constructing race and race-based discrimination; and 3.) the suppression or revision of …
