Coriolis Uncrewed Aircraft System Storm Operations And Implementation Into Hurricane Reconnaissance Missions, Lauren Baez
Coriolis Uncrewed Aircraft System Storm Operations And Implementation Into Hurricane Reconnaissance Missions, Lauren Baez
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
A hurricane’s intentions are unknown until you look it in the eye. Dragoon’s Coriolis Small Uncrewed Aircraft System (sUAS) has been engineered to collect atmospheric sounding data at low altitude regimes within these severe weather events. During 2025 operations, Coriolis has been classified as a mature prototype capable of operating more than 15 continuous hours and Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS). Launching from land, it travels under a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Certificate of Waiver that grants it immunity from 14 CFR § 107.31 and § 107.33. Upon reaching atmospheric disturbances prior to their landfall, the Coriolis gathers measurements …

Exploring Aquatic Microbial Frontiers: Investigating Water Quality In Central Florida Lakes, Leah Robinson
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
This study evaluated bacterial contamination across fifteen freshwater sites in Central Florida to assess how land use influences microbial water quality. Samples were collected from lakes and one river and tested for coliform bacteria and Escherichia coli (E.coli) using coliform detection broth, indole dye confirmation, and plating on EMB agar for colony count. Fourteen of the fifteen sites (93%) tested positive for coliform bacteria, and thirteen (87%) tested positive for E.coli. Colony-forming unit (CFU) counts ranged from 420 to 110000 CFU/mL, with Lake Okahumpka showing the highest contamination and Lake Sumter the only site testing negative for both coliforms and …
A Nuclear Crossroads: South Korea's Nuclear Stance And The Factors That Shape It, Brianna Johnshon
A Nuclear Crossroads: South Korea's Nuclear Stance And The Factors That Shape It, Brianna Johnshon
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
South Korea represents a standard case of latent nuclear power, where nuclear development is constrained by choice rather than capability. In the past, Seoul’s rhetoric surrounding nuclear capabilities has ranged from endorsement of a domestic nuclear program to a staunch commitment to nonproliferation. These shifts are shaped by both foreign and domestic factors that reflect Seoul’s broader strategic calculations. Through comparative case studies of three key periods in South Korea’s nuclear rhetoric, this paper analyzes the main factors that influence the official stance on nuclear development. The first case covers early attempts at nuclear development in the 1970s with Project …

This undergraduate research project advances a low-cost, open-source manipulation system for a university-scale quadruped, extending the Embry-Riddle OpenMutt platform with a compact 3-R arm and modular end-effectors. Motivated by the high purchase price and limited extensibility of commercial quadrupeds, we target a reproducible, student-serviceable alternative that supports loco-manipulation research and hands-on learning in controls, kinematics, and mechatronics. Open quadruped efforts such as Stanford Doggo demonstrate that transparent, replicable designs can deliver serious research capability at student budgets [1]. Our arm leverages lightweight cycloidal gearing to achieve high torque density in a printable form factor suitable for rapid iteration and repair, …

Wolf-Rayet Astrophysics And Pulsations (Wrap): A Machine Learning Approach To Tess Observations For The Lmc, Kassidy Myers, Anthony Fabrega, Anthony Gilbert, William Punches, Bailey Wolf
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
The evolution of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars is influenced by the star’s mass loss channel, either through stellar winds or binary evolution. Studying WR stars provides insight into the formation and evolution of massive stars. Binary WR systems, which are comprised of the WR star and a companion O-star, are of particular interest because they allow researchers to determine the mass of the WR star. The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is an ideal hunting ground for such WR stars due to its low metallicity. In this work, we use NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) data to train a supervised machine …

Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Harmful waste is prevalent all over the world, especially in publicly accessible tourist locations such as here in Daytona Beach. Sustainable Environment Autonomous Litter-Remover (SEAL) is intended to be a fully autonomous, all-terrain waste-sifting robot. SEAL’s main goal is to locate, navigate to, and remove harmful waste within GPS-inaccurate environments, and the environment we’ll be operating in will be sandy beaches near the coast. Using this environment for operation comes with the prominent challenge of localization, as there is a lack of significant features within the area and the area’s locale; therefore, localization tends to be extremely challenging as the …

Drawing Fair Lines: Open-Source Neighborhood Delineation For The Future Of Valuation, Will Jarvis
Drawing Fair Lines: Open-Source Neighborhood Delineation For The Future Of Valuation, Will Jarvis
GIS/ValuationTechnologies Conference 2026
Neighborhoods remain the foundation of valuation. They shape how markets are modeled, how assessments are defended, and how taxpayers perceive fairness. Yet for most jurisdictions, neighborhood boundaries are still drawn manually, often relying on local knowledge and historical precedent. The result is uneven, subjective, and difficult to explain to the public. New advances in GIS and data science make it possible to do better. With algorithmic community detection methods, assessors can automatically generate neighborhoods that reflect how markets actually behave. Combined with open data sources like OpenStreetMap and free tools such as QGIS and GeoPandas, these techniques allow valuation professionals …

Metabolomics In Precision Medicine: Application And Prospect In Cancer Research, Ming-Shi Shiao
Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
Metabolomics is the most recent and final discipline among the post-genomic, multiomics fields. It encompasses key technologies in systems biology, providing an overview of low-molecular-weight metabolites while examining disturbances to offer pathophysiological explanations. The two key analytical tools in metabolomics are nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, which includes gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Metabolomic research relies on a three-stage data generation process: the first stage involves precise analytical chemistry to produce data; the second stage employs multivariate statistical analysis; and the last stage uses big data as a reference for comparison to establish biochemical, metabolic, and …
Temporalities Of Translation In Ursula K. Le Guin's The Dispossessed, Rumi Coller-Takahashi
Temporalities Of Translation In Ursula K. Le Guin's The Dispossessed, Rumi Coller-Takahashi
Living in Languages
Ursula K. Le Guin’s 1974 novel, The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia features two fictional worlds, Urras and Anarres, with distinct political structures and languages. Anarres is created by the revolutionaries who departed capitalistic Urras to create a new anarchist community, and its language was invented so as to have no word for “property” or “class.” However, the artificial distinction in the languages do not hold up the binary of possession and non-possession in these worlds, as the word “possession” permeates interpersonal relationships even on Anarres. To replace the binary approach of the revolution, the novel proposes an alternative mode of …

Translation As Divination: Translating Naomi Sím’S Emerald Orchid Love Letter, Will Buckingham
Living in Languages
Naomi Sím’s Taiwanese (Tâi-gí) language short story, "Emerald Orchid Love Letter" (Chhùi-Lân ê Chêng-Phoe 翠蘭ê情批) engages deeply with the questions of politics, language and religion in contemporary Taiwan. The plot of the story pivots around the central question of what language the gods speak. In the story, the narrator—caught between Taiwanese, Mandarin and English languages—finds a strange growth on her inside lip. The cure turns out to involve the sea goddess Má-chó͘, and a renewed commitment on the part of the narrator to the Taiwanese language. In this paper, I read the process of translating Sím’s story from Taiwanese to …

Feather And Freedom: A Fabled Land In The Mind, Yuan Tao
Living in Languages
Set in the deceptively tranquil Honest Town, “The Feather of Sister Zandan” is narrated from the perspective of Zaan, a younger brother, revealing his complicated feelings toward his sister. Written in a fable-like style infused with magical realism, the story explores the tension between restraint and longing, culminating in an abrupt and poignant ending that evokes the emotional sting of an O. Henry-style twist. The short story won the Gemini Prize for Short Fiction of China in 2021. According to the award citation, Lan Du’s writing demonstrates emotional depth, dazzling imagination, and striking narrative tension. Her storytelling defies conventional …

College Football Free Agency: The Transactional Nature Of Big-Time College Football Recruiting, Chris Corr, Branden Johnson, Amanda L. Paule-Koba
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
This study explored how the transfer portal has transformed college football recruiting by disrupting traditional relationship-based practices and accelerating the shift toward a transactional performance-driven model. Drawing on Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus, field, and capital, the research examines how recruiting coordinators navigate evolving pressures around talent acquisition, NIL compensation, and compressed recruiting timelines. Findings from comprehensive interviews with five Power-4 recruiting personnel reveal that relationships are increasingly leveraged for short-term gain. The findings of this study indicate the transfer portal has created an opaque high-stakes marketplace where trust is limited, valuation is speculative, and institutional pedigree/resources heavily influence opportunities. The …

An Exploration Of College Athletes' Action To Change The Eyes Of Texas. A Chronological Case Study, Charles Macaulay, Jessica K. Brougham, Christopher M. Mcleod, Ajhanai C. Keaton
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
This study presents a chronological case study exploring the University of Texas Austin wherein a broad coalition of students, college athletes, marching band members and others from the UT community engaged in several forms of activism challenging the university to address racial inequities. Unlike other sport organizations that swiftly supported activist efforts, the University of Texas serves as a case where leadership attempted to uphold the status quo and stifle dissent. Thus, this manuscript explores the oscillating dynamic between sport activism and organizational responses when a broad coalition of actors, lacking status, influence, and power, engage in continued efforts to …
