Modeling Early Indicators For Success In An Associate Degree In Nursing Program, Joseph D. Moss
Modeling Early Indicators For Success In An Associate Degree In Nursing Program, Joseph D. Moss
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
Persistent nursing workforce shortages across the United States have increased the importance of Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) programs as primary entry points into the profession. Community colleges prepare a substantial portion of the nursing workforce; however, attrition within ADN programs limits the number of graduates entering practice. Understanding factors associated with academic performance and program completion is essential for strengthening nursing education pathways and supporting workforce development. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine early academic and sociodemographic factors associated with successful completion of an ADN program at a suburban community college.

Considering Special Education Program Performance Analysis And Teacher And Student Involvement In Transition Planning: A Delphi Study To Prioritize Student Interests, Strengths, And Transition Assessment, Charles S. Thull
STEMPS Theses & Dissertations
Individualized education program (IEP) transition plans are required to be based on student interests and strengths, and use age-appropriate transition assessments, yet limited guidance exists on how to prioritize these elements. Despite decades of transition planning research and policy development, students with disabilities continue to experience poor postsecondary transition outcomes, special education teachers report limited readiness to support transition planning, university special education programs lack transition focused coursework, and transition plans are created for compliance and lack transition assessment information. Considering these concerns, this study used a modified Delphi method, informed by Human Performance Technology (HPT) and Ecological Systems Theory …
Exploring The Perceptions Of United States Dentists And Dental Hygienists Towards Implementation Of New Workforce Shortage Policies, Hite N. Jones
Exploring The Perceptions Of United States Dentists And Dental Hygienists Towards Implementation Of New Workforce Shortage Policies, Hite N. Jones
Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations
Background: There is a perceived national dental hygiene shortage causing delays in receiving preventive treatment and potentially increasing oral disease risk. States are proposing alternative pathways to allow less-trained individuals to provide dental hygiene care to fill this perceived gap. There is no research to support whether such measures would mitigate the shortage issue. Purpose: Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of United States (U.S.) dentists and dental hygienists (DH) towards the implementation of new workforce shortage policies and contributing factors and solutions to the workforce shortage. Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study included a convenience …
Women's Displacement And The Reclamation Of Identity: Navigating Landscapes Of Contestation In The Postcolonial Novel, Carol P. Harvest
Women's Displacement And The Reclamation Of Identity: Navigating Landscapes Of Contestation In The Postcolonial Novel, Carol P. Harvest
English Theses & Dissertations
Landscapes affected by colonial domination are contested landscapes—places not only in danger of environmental destruction through colonial and neocolonial violence but also landscapes of struggle for people who survive in these precarious spaces. Historically, separate postcolonial and ecocritical literary analysis addressed contested landscapes; postcolonial critique centered on the lasting devastation of colonial violence on people and place, while ecocriticism, in its infancy, enjoyed the privilege of ignorance, focusing on endangered species and the preservation of land, but it did not consider the impact of landscapes on the very people who were largely forced to either leave or cross “natural” spaces. …
Learning In Motion: How Small Groups Can Promote Self-Regulated Learning In Physical Therapy Students, Sara Mclaren
Learning In Motion: How Small Groups Can Promote Self-Regulated Learning In Physical Therapy Students, Sara Mclaren
STEMPS Theses & Dissertations
Self-regulated learning (SRL) is a critical skill for success in rigorous graduate health professions programs, where students must independently manage complex academic demands. Despite its importance, limited research has examined SRL processes among Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students in the didactic phase of training. Guided by Zimmerman’s cyclical model of self-regulated learning, this study examined SRL behaviors among second-year DPT students and explored how small group learning contexts may influence engagement in SRL processes and academic performance.
This mixed-methods study included 39 DPT students enrolled in a physical therapy program at a public university in the southeastern United States. …
Does Short-Termism Pay? National Short-Termism, Investment, Innovation, And Equity Returns, Andrew H. Cohen
Does Short-Termism Pay? National Short-Termism, Investment, Innovation, And Equity Returns, Andrew H. Cohen
Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration
We examine whether national short-termism, inferred from corporate language, predicts future real activity, equity returns, risk, and risk-adjusted performance. Using large-scale textual analysis of issuer-linked disclosures and earnings transcripts from the largest firms in twenty major equity markets, we construct country-quarter and annual Short-Termism Scores (STS) capturing the relative emphasis on short- versus long-horizon language.
Higher short-termism predicts lower subsequent gross fixed capital formation, lower research and development intensity, and lower multi-year equity index returns across horizons of up to sixteen quarters. In addition, higher short-termism is associated with greater future market volatility and lower Sharpe ratios, indicating a deterioration …
An Integrated Bayesian Network-Based Zero Trust Model To Quantify Cyber Risk In Small-Medium Businesses, Ahmed Abdelmagid
An Integrated Bayesian Network-Based Zero Trust Model To Quantify Cyber Risk In Small-Medium Businesses, Ahmed Abdelmagid
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Small-medium businesses (SMBs) play a pivotal role in the worldwide economy as they constitute the most considerable portion of businesses in developed countries like the UK and the US. As such, SMBs are likely targets of cybercrimes by malicious agents because of their vulnerable IT systems. The digital infrastructure of SMBs is more likely to be hit by cyberattacks than large businesses due to many factors that facilitate hackers’ missions. These factors include a limited financial budget devoted to cybersecurity, a lack of knowledge, an underrating of how dangerous cyber threats are, and a shortage of IT expertise. The enormous …
A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Case Study On Principals’ Attitudes And Practices Toward The Inclusion Of Students With Disabilities, Charlene Marie Briggs
A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Case Study On Principals’ Attitudes And Practices Toward The Inclusion Of Students With Disabilities, Charlene Marie Briggs
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
Despite decades of federal legislation mandating inclusion, many schools still struggle to serve students with disabilities effectively, resulting in persistent achievement gaps and limited postsecondary success. Research consistently identifies principals’ attitudes and practices as the most influential factor in inclusive school success, yet existing studies have examined these elements in isolation rather than as interconnected parts of a school system. This hermeneutic phenomenological case study explored how ten Virginia elementary school principals understood and enacted their attitudes and leadership practices toward the inclusion of students with disabilities in their schools. The study used van Manen’s (2014) hermeneutic phenomenology to understand …

In this cyber dependent and enabled era, understanding the role of human factors in digital security is essential. This study investigates the relationship between Big-Five personality traits and cybersecurity behaviors by examining both self-reported and stimulated behaviors in security threat scenarios. Participants completed validated questionnaires to report their personality traits, cybersecurity practices and engage in task-based stimulations to capture behaviors such as phishing detection, password creation, and response to security alerts. The study tested whether higher conscientiousness, openness, and agreeableness would be associated with stronger cybersecurity practices and smaller discrepancies between self-reported and observed behaviors. And, whether greater extraversion and …
Mechanisms Of Synergy Between Nanosecond Pulsed Electric Field (Nspef) And Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Discharge (Cap) In Pancreatic Cancer: The Role Of Ros-Mediated Oxidative Stress And Apoptosis, Zobia Minhas
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is a highly lethal malignancy characterized by poor prognosis and resistance to conventional therapies. Novel treatment strategies are needed to overcome this resistance. Non-thermal physical modalities, including nanosecond pulsed electric field (nsPEF) and cold atmospheric pressure plasma discharge (CAP), have emerged as potential anticancer approaches; however, the mechanisms underlying their combined effects remain unclear.
This study evaluated whether nsPEF enhances CAP-induced cytotoxicity and investigated the associated molecular mechanisms using the murine Pan02 pancreatic cancer cell line. Cell viability was assessed by WST-1 metabolic activity assays and electric cell–substrate impedance sensing (ECIS). Intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) were …

Effects Of Cross-Language Instructional Design On Foreign Language Learners' Cognitive Load: Approaching The Redundancy Principle Of Multimedia Learning, Leonor Mendiola Adams
Effects Of Cross-Language Instructional Design On Foreign Language Learners' Cognitive Load: Approaching The Redundancy Principle Of Multimedia Learning, Leonor Mendiola Adams
STEMPS Theses & Dissertations
Because conceptualizations of cognitive resources play a critical role in determining the effectiveness of instructional design (Greeno, 2011; Greeno et al., 1996; Mayer, 2011, 2019), this study explores the effects of cross-language instructional design on learners’ perceived intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive load content corresponding to content complexity, instructional presentation demands, and depth of understanding and schema construction, respectively.
Grounded in the redundancy principle of the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, this research further investigates whether the principle operates differently when learners’ native language is strategically incorporated into foreign language learning contexts. According to the cognitive theory of multimedia learning, …
Herding Cats: The Behavioral Foundations Of Successful Multi-Sector Partnerships, Paul B. Olsen
Herding Cats: The Behavioral Foundations Of Successful Multi-Sector Partnerships, Paul B. Olsen
School of Public Service Theses & Dissertations
Multi-sector partnerships (MSPs) are problem-solving groups composed of government agencies, nonprofit organizations, private firms, community groups, and individuals. These partnerships have often struggled to achieve consistent success, with performance rates estimated at 30%–50%, largely because MSPs are tailored to the specific interests, resources, and implementation contexts of the constellation of stakeholders involved in each project. This situation raised important questions regarding how MSP performance can be predicted and whether the likelihood of success can be enhanced during the early planning stages of partnership formation.
Social value orientation (SVO) is a behavioral public administration theory that may help explain variation in …
Empowering Change: Building Environmental Sustainability Initiatives And Becoming A Sustainability Champion, Amanda C. Karls
Empowering Change: Building Environmental Sustainability Initiatives And Becoming A Sustainability Champion, Amanda C. Karls
School of Public Service Theses & Dissertations
In an era marked by escalating environmental challenges and an urgent need for sustainable development, higher education institutions (HEIs) are increasingly positioned as critical actors in advancing sustainability within the communities they serve. Regional comprehensive universities (RCUs), in particular, occupy a distinctive position as access‑oriented, community‑embedded public institutions; yet sustainability efforts at these institutions often unfold under conditions of limited resources, diffuse responsibility, and informal governance. This dissertation examines how individual actors at RCUs effectively advance environmental sustainability initiatives in the absence of centralized infrastructure or formal authority.
Guided by the overarching research question—How can individual actors at regional comprehensive …
A Theoretical Framework For Recursion In Complex System Governance, Gilbert Goddin
A Theoretical Framework For Recursion In Complex System Governance, Gilbert Goddin
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to construct an original theoretical framework for understanding recursion in Complex System Governance (CSG), grounded in the propositions and axioms of systems theory and management cybernetics. This framework addresses a research gap for cybernetic recursion relating to the governance of complex systems. Leveraging the CSG framework (Keating & Katina, 2019; Keating, 2022), holonic principles (Koestler, 1970; Mella, 2009), management cybernetics (Beer, 1979; Beer, 1984; Beer, 1995), and metacybernetics (Yolles, 2021; Yolles & Fink, 2015c; Yolles & Frieden, 2021), recursion is theorized as a governable capability, whereby metasystemic governance anticipates emerging complexity and purposefully regulates …
“Recollecting The Told Story”: Storytelling, Activism, And The Black Maternal Health Emergency, Lamaya C. Williams
“Recollecting The Told Story”: Storytelling, Activism, And The Black Maternal Health Emergency, Lamaya C. Williams
English Theses & Dissertations
Storytelling is a foundational component of Black knowledge creation and transmission. This dissertation centers Black women’s stories of birth and mothering—drawing on both primary source birth stories and fictional narratives—to examine the United States’ Black Maternal Health Emergency (BMHE). The BMHE is a complex and urgent issue wherein structural racism, medical bias, and intersecting social determinants disproportionately endanger the health of Black mothers. As such, Black mothers in the United States are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related condition compared to their white counterparts.
This study examines the birth stories of women who survived the BMHE and …
The Effects Of Covid 19 Job Demands On Public Sector Employees’ Organizational Commitment: The Mediating Roles Of Work Engagement And Job Burnout, And The Moderating Role Of Supervisor Support, Benjamin R. Kaufman
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
United States citizens rely on state government employees to provide essential public services. During the COVID-19 pandemic, these employees responded by administering both routine and novel procedures to protect public health, often placing them on the frontlines and at increased risk of contagion. Concurrently, the pandemic-driven economic downturn created budget shortfalls that threatened the job and financial security of the state workforce. Together, these conditions substantially increased job demands for state government employees.
Guided by the Job Demands–Resources (JDR) Model, this study examined how COVID‑19-related job demands influenced state employees’ work engagement, job burnout, and organizational commitment, and whether supervisor …

Drawing upon the theoretical lenses of cultural studies and community of practice, the study offers a thorough examination of how circus people use insider language for business, performance, and community purposes that enhance belonging, share knowledge, gatekeep, and protect their group identity.
The research employs a mixed-methods, scaffolded design that integrates both qualitative and quantitative data approaches, examining the cultural importance of circus language as written and spoken by the insider community. The design begins with …
Eagle-Winged Worms: Seeing Contingent Faculty Through Currere, Nicholas Hayes
Eagle-Winged Worms: Seeing Contingent Faculty Through Currere, Nicholas Hayes
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
This currere explores my experiences as part-time contingent faculty working at multiple institutions (a so-called freeway flyer). Covering the years from 2005-2015, the regressive mode draws from my experiences teaching writing composition and literature at a community college, arts college, and three religious universities. A central impetus for this exploration is a desire to understand the ways I was socialized by these institutions and how that socialization shaped my understanding of my identity within and through my status as contingent faculty. Higher education (especially first-year writing programs) has become dependent on contingent faculty. The increased reliance on part-time contingent faculty …
The Role Communication, Collaboration, And Leadership Practices Play In Parents’ High School Volunteering Experiences: An Exploratory Qualitative Case Study, Julee Gould
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
This qualitative case study explored parents’ perceptions and experiences related to volunteering at a suburban high school in California, with a focus on both the motivations and challenges that shape involvement. Guided by two central research questions, the study explored (1) parents’ perceptions regarding the motivations and challenges for parent volunteering at the high school and (2) how parents feel about their experiences when volunteering as their children transition from elementary to secondary school. While existing research consistently links parent involvement to improved academic and emotional outcomes for students, parental engagement often declines during the secondary years. By integrating an …
Always On, Never Off: A Phenomenological Study Of Entry-Level Residence Directors In Coextensive Environments, Brent Ploughe
Always On, Never Off: A Phenomenological Study Of Entry-Level Residence Directors In Coextensive Environments, Brent Ploughe
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
This qualitative phenomenological study examined how entry-level live-in residence directors make meaning of their professional roles while living within institutionally structured environments that merge domestic space with ongoing job responsibility. Although existing scholarship on housing and residence life addresses burnout, boundary management, emotional labor, and attrition, dominant work–life balance frameworks presume that work and home exist as separable domains subject to individual regulation. Such assumptions remain insufficient for professionals whose residences are embedded within the institutional architecture they oversee. Guided by Borderlands Theory (Anzaldúa, 1987), this study reconceptualized the live-in residence director role as a structurally produced borderland in which …
Surviving The Hood: An Autoethnography On Violence, Trauma, And Agency, Deonte Tanner
Surviving The Hood: An Autoethnography On Violence, Trauma, And Agency, Deonte Tanner
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
The epidemic of gun violence is no secret in the United States. Many empirical studies have focused on gun violence, trauma, and race, and have even offered solutions to the phenomenon. However, limited research has called forward the voice of those most impacted (Black boys) and the counters they believe are feasible to their own experience. This work was grounded in critical race theory (CRT). At the same time, it attempted to supplement CRT with careful reflection on what helped me avoid the very kinds of historical and structural exclusions facing Black boys in the hood that CRT helps reveal. …

The Unspoken Struggles And Unseen Strength: An Autoethnographic Exploration Of Single Motherhood In Higher Education, Alexis Summer Gunartt
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
Despite the social, economic, and generational benefits of degree attainment, single mothers remain underrepresented in higher education. This autoethnographic research explores the lived experiences of single mothers as they navigate higher education. Guided by feminist theory and critical perspectives on higher education, this study examines how power, gendered expectations, and institutional structures shape single mothers’ academic experiences and persistence. As a single mother myself, I draw from personal narrative along with narrative interviews from other single mothers engaged in higher education, this study examines how financial strain, childcare challenges, institutional inflexibility, and cultural norms shape educational persistence. Using autoethnography as …
Redefining Retention: Analyzing The Experiences Of Black Men In Higher Education Through The Lens Of Race, Masculinity, And Strength-Based Approaches, Roderick Waters
Redefining Retention: Analyzing The Experiences Of Black Men In Higher Education Through The Lens Of Race, Masculinity, And Strength-Based Approaches, Roderick Waters
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
Black male students have continued to face systemic challenges in higher education, particularly at historically White institutions (HWIs), where they experience lower retention and graduation rates compared to their peers. Although enrollment numbers have increased, institutional barriers, racialized campus environments, and deficit-based narratives have continued to contribute to disparities in academic success. Much of the existing research has focused on the challenges Black male students encounter rather than the strategies, relationships, and institutional conditions that support their persistence. This study sought to shift that focus by exploring the lived experiences of Black men who persisted at an HWI through an …

Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
This study examined how success is defined and measured within Chicago’s Alternative Learning Institutions (ALIs), focusing on academic and postsecondary outcomes across 40 Option Schools. Grounded in the broader landscape of alternative education, the research highlights how these schools function as second‑chance pathways for youth who have disengaged from traditional settings. Using a quantitative, correlational design, the study analyzed quantitative performance indicators—including attendance, credit attainment, graduation rates, and postsecondary enrollment. Findings reveal significant variation in how ALIs conceptualize and operationalize student success, shaped by governance structures, accountability pressures, and the unique needs of over‑age and under‑credited learners. While many schools …
Antecedents Of The Principal Investigator’S Commercial Success When Funded By Small Business Innovation Research Program, Mohammed Bekkour
Antecedents Of The Principal Investigator’S Commercial Success When Funded By Small Business Innovation Research Program, Mohammed Bekkour
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
The commercial performance of Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) projects remains substantially below national expectations despite decades of investment and strong technical output. Prior research suggests that commercialization outcomes depend not only on technological merit but also on the behavioral, cognitive, and managerial competencies of the Principal Investigator (PI), who often serves as both scientific lead and entrepreneurial decision-maker. Yet, systematic examination of PI-level attributes within SBIR contexts remains limited. This study investigates how six key constructs—Iterative Learning Process, Proactiveness, Organizational Risk Orientation, Scope Definition, Management Competence, and Simultaneous Project Engagement—relate to commercialization success among SBIR Phase II awardees. Drawing …

Merging For Success: A Case Study On School Mergers As A Sustainable Alternative To Closures In Urban Education, Darcy Lynn Maxim-Otterbacher
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
Urban public school districts across the United States continue to face declining enrollment, financial instability, and persistent racial and socioeconomic inequities. In response, school closures have often been used as a primary strategy to address these challenges. This qualitative case study examines school mergers as a potential alternative to closures by exploring the lived experiences of school professionals during the merger of two urban elementary schools in the Midwest. Grounded in Critical Race Theory and Transformative Leadership Theory, this study investigates how educators experienced the merger process from planning through implementation, the challenges and supports encountered, and the ways relationships, …
Beyond The Script: A Qualitative Study Exploring Drama Teachers’ Experiences Using Improvisation In Chicago Public Schools, Nicole Theresa Minardi
Beyond The Script: A Qualitative Study Exploring Drama Teachers’ Experiences Using Improvisation In Chicago Public Schools, Nicole Theresa Minardi
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
Scripted and standardized curricula remain prevalent in American classrooms. Relying on an authoritarian view of education, in which the teacher imparts knowledge to students, scripted curricula can delegitimize the teaching profession, stifle dialogue, and limit student engagement. Conversely, decentering the teacher can create space for more collaborative and engaged learning. This basic interpretive qualitative study explored how Chicago Public Schools drama teachers described their experiences incorporating improvisation into their instruction. Grounded in critical pedagogy and a social constructivist epistemology, this study examined how drama teachers currently use improvisation in their classrooms, as well as the benefits and challenges they encounter …

The International Baccalaureate (IB) has expanded rapidly into schools serving low socioeconomic status (SES) communities in the United States as part of broader efforts to increase access to rigorous, internationally recognized academic programming. While research has documented positive student outcomes associated with IB participation, less is known about the leadership conditions that support the long-term sustainability of IB programs in under resourced contexts. This quantitative, cross-sectional study examines IB leaders’ perceptions of implementation and sustainability challenges in low-SES school settings, the relationship between those challenges and perceived leadership effectiveness and program outcomes, and the adaptive strategies leaders identify as essential …
Does One Size Fit All? A Lifespan Perspective On The Relationship Between Work Design And Mental Health, Christina Ju
Does One Size Fit All? A Lifespan Perspective On The Relationship Between Work Design And Mental Health, Christina Ju
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
As the global workforce ages, traditional work design models that assume job resources are universally beneficial require re-evaluation. Drawing upon lifespan development and socioemotional selectivity theory, this longitudinal study examined how chronological age moderates the effects of skill discretion and coworker support on job-related mental health over a 20-year period. Data from three waves of the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) survey (N = 3,890) were analyzed using linear mixed models to separate within-person changes from between-person differences. Results indicated that skill discretion and coworker support were positively associated with job-related mental health overall. The hypothesis that the benefits …
