Knowledgable Births: Advancing Informed Consent In Maternal Healthcare, Ella A. Forrester
Knowledgable Births: Advancing Informed Consent In Maternal Healthcare, Ella A. Forrester
Senior Theses
Background:
Informed consent is both a legal requirement and an ethical cornerstone of healthcare, ensuring that patients understand and voluntarily agree to medical treatments. However, evidence suggests that the informed consent process is often inadequately implemented in maternal healthcare settings, particularly during childbirth. While giving birth, women retain full decision-making capacity but are not consistently provided with sufficient information or support to exercise this right. Contributing factors include ineffective patient–provider communication, limited health literacy, and insufficient access to culturally responsive educational resources.
Methods:
This study aimed to address gaps in accessible prenatal education by developing an online resource platform, Know …

Reevaluating Pediatric Concussion Recovery: The Need For Comprehensive Psychological Assessments, Jolie L. Slobodin
Senior Theses
Pediatric concussions represent a significant public health concern due to their complex and often long-lasting effects on the developing brain. Although concussion is classified as a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), growing evidence indicates that children and adolescents experience psychological, cognitive, and academic difficulties that extend beyond physical symptom resolution. While somatic and cognitive symptoms often predominate in the acute phase of recovery, emotional and behavioral concerns frequently emerge or persist later, yet remain inconsistently evaluated in standard concussion care. This thesis examines the psychological, cognitive, and academic outcomes of pediatric concussion and evaluates whether current assessment practices capture the …
The Digital Divide: Voter Perceptions In The Age Of Social Media, Molly E. Griffin
The Digital Divide: Voter Perceptions In The Age Of Social Media, Molly E. Griffin
Senior Theses
This thesis examines how social media shapes voter perceptions of candidate ideology and economic issues, and how these perceptions influence electoral decision-making. As digital platforms increasingly serve as primary sources of political information, exposure to negative content and patterns such as doom-scrolling can affect voters’ understanding of political realities. The study explores how social media reinforces preexisting beliefs, amplifies stereotypes, and creates echo chambers that shape both perceptions and choices in elections. Using survey data on US senators collected during the 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2022 election cycles, the research investigates the mechanisms by which digital media influence voter behavior. …

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by an abnormal CAG expansion in the Huntingtin (HTT) gene. Given its simple genetic cause but complex pathogenic mechanisms, interest in targeting HTT for HD treatment is growing, necessitating a clear understanding of HTT regulation. HTT protein primarily exists in a core complex with HAP40, forming a highly ordered structure with two large globular domains connected by a bridge. We previously demonstrated that HAP40 is conserved in

The Pharmacogene Variation Consortium (PharmVar) provides nomenclature for the highly polymorphic human N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2) gene. NAT2 metabolizes several clinically used drugs including isoniazid, hydralazine, amifampridine, procainamide, and sulfonamides such as dapsone, and also some highly carcinogenic arylamines. Systematic nomenclature describing NAT2 variation is essential for pharmacogenetic testing, genotype interpretation, and translation to phenotype in research and clinical settings. This GeneFocus provides an overview of NAT2 variation and describes important changes to its star allele-based nomenclature that were made as it was transitioned to PharmVar in March 2024. We also highlight and discuss challenges regarding the characterization of allelic variation …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Glycoprotein sialylation represents a critical posttranslational modification with diverse biological roles in animals. This review explores its multifaceted functions in the nervous system, with particular emphasis on neurophysiology, homeostasis, and associated neurological disorders. The sialylation pathway modulates key neural processes through effects on glycoprotein stability, localization, activity, and molecular interactions. Examples include its crucial role in the regulation of neuronal excitability by modulating the functions of voltage-gated ion channels. Recent studies have uncovered remarkably rapid, activity-dependent changes in synaptic sialylation, suggesting dynamic sialylation-mediated regulation of neural transmission and highlighting the importance of neuraminidases in these processes. Beyond synaptic function, sialylation …

Impacts Of Listening Practice On Work Performance While Wearing Hearing Protection., Patricia Mcclain, Matthew G. Wisniewski
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Individuals who work in loud environments often choose not to wear hearing protection devices (HPDs) while on the job. A prevailing justification for this decision involves potential performance impairments that come with HPD use. While previous research has been successful in characterizing the overwhelming prevalence of this issue, the question of how to go about improving HPD use still remains. In this study, we investigated the possibility that performance while wearing an HPD could improve if people are given listening training with a simulated HPD. Participants listened to podcasts in which the audio was filtered to simulate wearing an HPD …

Decentralized exchanges (DEXs) allow traders to express their willingness to pay for quick execution through a public priority fee bidding mechanism. We provide evidence that high-fee DEX trades are more informative and contribute more to price discovery. Using address-level blockchain transaction data, we show that informed traders persistently bid higher fees to secure early execution, revealing a strong willingness to pay for execution priority. Further, analysis of Ethereum mempool data demonstrates that informed traders employ a “jump bidding” strategy, placing high initial bids to deter potential competitors.

Optometry Associations And The Free Rider Problem Revisited, Matthew Mullis, Joshua Hall, Edgar Orozco
Graduate Student Scholarship
Members of professional associations pay dues to professional associations for a variety of reasons, including lobbying. This can lead to a free-rider problem if non-members enjoy the benefits without paying. Using 2023 data from 30 states, we revisit earlier work on the free-riding problem by analyzing how continuing education requirements, number of optometrists, benefit salience, and legal services affect membership rates. We find no significant relationship between continuing education hours or total optometrists and membership percentages. We introduce two variables measuring selective incentives: salience of advertised benefits and availability of legal services. Legal services exhibit a negative association with membership …
