Assessing Recovery In Collegiate Swimmers Through Wearable Technology, Sara Quintero
Assessing Recovery In Collegiate Swimmers Through Wearable Technology, Sara Quintero
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Collegiate swimmers face extreme physiological demands during high-intensity training phases like "Hell Week," a winter training intensive loading microcycle, that makes recovery monitoring critical for maintaining performance. This study investigated the relationship between sleep quality and recovery markers. Specifically, Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and Resting Heart Rate (RHR), in nine female collegiate swimmers (ages 19-23) across all collegiate years. Participants included sprinters, mid-distance, and distance swimmers, leading to varied total yardage across training groups. Over an eight-day period (seven training days and one rest day), data was collected via screenshots from Garmin (n=4) and WHOOP (n=5) wearable devices. Metrics included …

Witnesses play a crucial role in criminal investigations. However, their ability to recall important details is influenced by cognitive processes such as memory. To improve eyewitness testimony, psychologists developed science-based interviewing techniques, such as the Cognitive Interview, which are used by police to elicit accurate accounts. We also created new retrieval strategies, namely the Category Clustering Recall (CCR), which has been implemented by agencies such as the Los Angeles Police Department. However, research supporting the use of these techniques predominantly used the mock-witness paradigm, where participants observed a mock-crime on a two-dimensional (2D) screen and recalled it in a controlled …

Group Differences In Conflict Processing Between Bilinguals And Monolinguals, Isidora Varas-Sanchez, Dylan Kuni, Julia Ribeiro, Andrea Fajardo Aguilar, Alyssa Harris
Undergraduate Student Symposium
There is an ongoing debate in the literature on the existence of a bilingual advantage on tests of attention. Hypothetically, bilinguals have an advantage over monolinguals on tests of attention because both attention and language control share the same inhibitory mechanism. Because bilinguals engage this mechanism more often than monolinguals, inhibitory control is believed to be stronger and confer an advantage. However, research findings on the bilingual advantage are inconsistent and attempts to reproduce prior results have sometimes failed. The argument is that studies may have failed to capture the important aspects of language linked to attention. Prior research from …

Interventions For Reducing Barriers To Future Employment Success In First-Generation College Students., Kellie M. Burke
Doctor of Social Work Capstone Projects
First-generation college students (FGCS) comprise a significant and diverse segment of the U.S. undergraduate population, yet they remain disproportionately vulnerable to barriers that impede both academic achievement and career advancement. These challenges, rooted in intersecting factors (e.g., race & gender), are amplified by institutional structures that inadequately address the realities faced by FGCS. Despite the proliferation of career development programs, internship participation, and subsequent employment, among FGCS remains notably low, revealing persistent gaps in support, access, and program efficacy.
This qualitative study evaluates the Rising Leaders Program, an agency-driven intervention designed to promote career readiness for FGCS at Kentucky universities …

Exploring The Professional Quality Of Life Of Female Collegiate Head Coaches., Jennifer Marie Boa
Doctor of Social Work Capstone Projects
Before Title IX passed in 1972, most female college sports teams were coached by women. Today, only 42% of head coaches are women, even though participation in women’s collegiate sports has increased by 637% since 1971. This study explored the factors influencing the professional quality of life of female college coaches. Variables considered in this study included parenting and work, organizational culture, women’s role in the workforce, unique issues faced by female collegiate coaches, and professional quality of life. The study used a mixed-methods cross-sectional design and purposive sampling, resulting in 107 valid responses. The results indicate that respondents felt …

Assessing the Relationship Between Professional Discipline and Perceptions of Team Functioning Within Hospital-based Multidisciplinary Child Abuse Teams
Nicolle Roth
04/03/2026
The multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach, professionals from various disciplines collaborating to solve a problem, has been used for decades in both child welfare and medicine. Benefits of the multidisciplinary approach have been documented through studies in both in the field of child abuse and the medical field and include improved outcomes, shortened intervention timelines, and economic advantages. Although multidisciplinary teamwork has been shown to be effective, not all professionals have the same level of skill in working within a …

Alternative Anticoagulation Strategies For Heparin-Intolerant Patients Undergoing Cardiopulmonary Bypass: A Scoping Review Of Patient Outcomes, Zachary Nelson
Student Works
Background/Introduction: Heparin intolerance, most notably heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), presents a major clinical challenge during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), where systemic anticoagulation is essential for safe circulation through the extracorporeal circuit. While several alternative anticoagulants have been described, there is limited consensus regarding their safety, dosing, and outcomes. The objective of this study was to map existing evidence describing alternative anticoagulation strategies for heparin-intolerant adult patients undergoing CPB and to summarize reported patient outcomes, dosing strategies, and intraoperative management considerations.
Methodology: This scoping review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) …

Background: Almost all correlation measures currently available are unable to directly handle missing values. Typically, missing values are either ignored completely by removing them or are imputed and used in the calculation of the correlation coefficient. In either case, the correlation value will be impacted based on the perspective that the missing data represents no useful information. However, missing values occur in real datasets for a variety of reasons. In metabolomics datasets a major reason for missing values is that a specific measurable phenomenon falls below the detection limits of the analytical instrumentation (left-censored values). These missing data are not …

Background/Objectives: Neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) share common molecular pathways, including neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, which complicate the effectiveness of single-target treatments. Garcinia mangostana L. (mangosteen) has shown neuroprotective properties, but previous studies focused on lipophilic xanthones, which have poor bioavailability and uncertain blood–brain barrier permeability. Methods: In the current study, polar metabolites from G. mangostana peel aqueous extract (GMPE) were assessed for potential multi-target interactions via UHPLC-QTOF-MS-based metabolomics, systems pharmacology, and molecular docking analysis. Further, in silico ADMET screening and network-based analyses assessed for overlap between GMPE compounds and genes associated with neurodegeneration (AD, …

Chronic ethanol (EtOH) consumption is a major contributor to multi-organ dysfunction, yet its systemic effects remain incompletely understood. To address this, we utilized a physiologically relevant long-term mouse model, administering 20% EtOH in drinking water for 60 weeks, to investigate the integrated consequences of chronic exposure. EtOH-consuming mice (0.4–0.5 mL/day) exhibited > 30% reductions in chow and fluid intake, resulting in a 12% decrease in total caloric intake compared to controls (p < 0.001). Body mass remained similar until Week 52, after which EtOH-treated mice had lower body mass due to reductions in both lean and fat mass (p ≤ 0.004). Functional assessments revealed impaired treadmill endurance (−17%) and grip strength (−11%) (p ≤ 0.037), while motor coordination remained unaffected (p = 0.203). Chronic EtOH exposure significantly altered gut microbiota composition, reducing Lactobacillus and enriching Faecalibaculum, Clostridium, and Bifidobacterium at the genus level. These changes were accompanied by marked depletion of short-chain fatty acids (p ≤ 0.05). Indirect markers of gut permeability (serum LPS & zonulin) and liver injury (serum ALT & AST, hepatic amyloid content) were elevated, alongside increased total cholesterol and > 62% upregulation of hepatic TNFα, IL-6 & serum amyloid A (p ≤ 0.046). EtOH also induced dyslipidemia and glucose intolerance (p ≤ 0.041), although transcriptomic changes in white adipose …

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper proposes a semi-endogenous growth theory that incorporates technology vintages and the endogenous evolution of multiple technological paradigms through innovation. It provides a characterization of both balanced growth equilibrium and transitional dynamics in an environment where new technologies continuously emerge. From a positive perspective, the model rationalizes two distinct empirical patterns. Using two centuries of US patent data, I first document that the age profile of patents has a pronounced hump shape: most contemporary patents build upon technologies that are between 50 and 100 years old. Second, this age profile has remained stable throughout the past century. From a …

Early Childcare Attendance And Cognitive Skills In Adolescence, Ingvild Almas, Nina Drange, Costas Meghir, Henrik Daae Zachrisson
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper examines the impact of early childcare on academic achievement for children in grade 5 and grade 9, based on a 2003 policy expansion that created quasi-random variation in slot availability for children aged 1–2. Starting childcare one year earlier increases math scores by 9.7% of a standard deviation (SD) in grade 9. Children whose mothers do not hold a high school diploma benefit by a significant 0.28% of a SD at grade 9, reducing the math achievement gap from children of higher-educated mothers by about one third. We also present evidence of strong improvements for children of immigrants.

The Original Meaning And Understanding Of The Investigative Power Of The Grand Jury In The Constitution Of Alaska, Savannah Shoffner, Richard W. Garnett
Journal Articles
The investigatory, or reporting, power of grand juries refers to the body’s ability to issue statements on wide-ranging matters of public policy, generally aimed at exposing “inefficiency, neglect, or criminal or quasi-criminal conduct” by government officials. Grand jurors may propose an investigation themselves or respond to a request from a citizen. The reports produced by these investigations need not be tied to a specific indictment to be released.
Text, history, and tradition reveal that the grand jury has been understood as an intermediary between the government and the people, empowered to make public statements on the people’s behalf and entrusted …

The Transparent Crypt: Temporal Stratification, Materiality, And The Affective Archive In Jenny Erpenbeck’S "Kairos", Mallory Wooldridge
Comparative Literature M.A. Essays
For Germany, the process of reckoning with the past is not a new one. Termed Vergangenheitsbewältigung in the post-war period and envisioned as a project extending beyond the academy into public consciousness, “dealing with the past” was first envisioned in response to the Nazi regime and its horrors. While already a disjointed project in the Nazi context, the question of how reunified Germany reckons with the former German Democratic Republic’s past remains unresolved.
In her 2021 novel Kairos, Jenny Erpenbeck proposes a different model of historical consciousness. Drawing on Theodor Adorno’s post-war theory of working through the past ( …

Wood Lands: Forest As Site Of National Memory In Germany And Italy, Clarissa Melendez
Comparative Literature M.A. Essays
Arguing that the rich symbolic associations of trees become a medium to synthesize shared identity during a country’s formative moments, this paper theorizes the image of the forest as a site of national memory. By tracking representations of the natural landscape during nation-building to representations that attempt to recover and reclaim dignity postwar, this paper lays bare the potential of the national symbol to transform as history progresses. The paper’s author reads three genres–fairy tales, a novel, and a work of public art–from three authors–the Brothers Grimm, Italo Calvino, and Joseph Beuys–across time to interrogate the role of the forest …

Occupational Epidemiology Of Acral Lentiginous Melanoma, Lily Guo, Robin Kikuchi, April W. Armstrong, Suephy C. Chen
Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
Acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) classically presents in glabrous skin. Some studies suggest an association between mechanical stress and ALM development. People working jobs with long periods of standing/walking may be exposed to near-daily mechanical stress. To investigate the relationship between occupation type and ALM development, we performed a retrospective cohort study using Optum’s Clinformatics Database (2007—2023). We compared the risk of ALM in adults with occupational data (n = 9,270,935). Retired patients had the highest prevalence (0.081) and incidence per 1,000,000 person-years (0.514, 95% confidence interval = 0.487—0.542) of ALM. We performed multivariate logistic regression, adjusted for demographics and insurance, …

The Impact Of Corporate Venture Capital On Financing And Innovation In Academic Entrepreneurial Firms, Tingting Luo
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Amid the ongoing advancement of China’s innovation-driven development strategy, the effective transformation of scientific research into industrial impact has become a central concern. Corporate Venture Capital (CVC), as a strategic investment mechanism connecting industrial capital with entrepreneurial ventures, is increasingly viewed as a critical external resource for high-technology start-ups. At the same time, Academic Entrepreneurship Firms (AEFs), characterized by their deep research capabilities and original technological trajectories, play a distinctive role as knowledge suppliers in uncertain, emerging industries. However, whether AEFs can effectively attract CVC support and convert it into innovation performance remains an open empirical and theoretical question.
