Before The Last Breath: How Alabama’S Nitrogen Execution Adoption Created A Procedural Crisis On Death Row, Caroline E. Penfield Apr 2026

Before The Last Breath: How Alabama’S Nitrogen Execution Adoption Created A Procedural Crisis On Death Row, Caroline E. Penfield

Washington and Lee Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice

In 2024 and 2025, Alabama executed eleven people. During this time and in the years leading up to it, the State botched multiple lethal injections. Seeking an ostensibly constitutional way to continue carrying out executions, Alabama introduced death by nitrogen gas suffocation. The problems with lethal injection are not unique to Alabama, but Alabama was the first to adopt and use the novel nitrogen gas method, despite concerns from medical professionals, the public, and inmates themselves. Alabama put little to no protocol in place for inmates to exercise their statutory right to elect this method, leading to confusion and harm. …

Reel It In: Untangling The Circuit Split On The Constitutionality Of Geofence Warrants Under The Fourth Amendment, Kate P. Risser Apr 2026

Reel It In: Untangling The Circuit Split On The Constitutionality Of Geofence Warrants Under The Fourth Amendment, Kate P. Risser

Washington and Lee Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice

This Note examines geofence warrants and their ongoing threat to constitutionally protected rights such as privacy, speech, and assembly. Part I will provide background information on geofence warrants and examine the prominent justifications for the use of the warrants. Part II will examine how law enforcement’s use of geofence warrants threatens citizens’ constitutionally protected fundamental rights like privacy and reproductive rights. Specifically, Part II addresses how geofence warrants disproportionately target and affect women, people of color, and low-income individuals. Part III will detail the history of the Fourth Amendment tracing its roots to before the Founding Era then exploring applicable …

Remembering In The North: How The Civil Rights Movement Is Told Through Monuments, Courtney Wight Apr 2026

Remembering In The North: How The Civil Rights Movement Is Told Through Monuments, Courtney Wight

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses

This thesis, titled “Remembering in the North: How the Civil Rights Movement is Told Through Monuments,” examines how the Civil Rights Movement is remembered in the North through public monuments. The Civil Rights Movement in the North has not received the same level of recognition compared to the South in public memory, yet the stories and activists in the North deserve the same acknowledgement. The cities of Newark, NJ, and Albany, NY, act as case studies to illustrate how the racism and discrimination, which prompted the Civil Rights Movement, were present in the North during the movement. Both cities, like …

“Let The Goddess Guide”: Athena, Columbia, And The Greco-Roman Roots Of American Imperial Rhetoric, Bridget Goguen Apr 2026

“Let The Goddess Guide”: Athena, Columbia, And The Greco-Roman Roots Of American Imperial Rhetoric, Bridget Goguen

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses

The goddess of wisdom and war models intellect without complacency, valor without rashness. Claiming this duality—a civilized militancy—from their patron goddess Athena, an ancient Athenian citizenry could rationalize imperial conquest as democratic goodwill. Millennia later, the United States, seeking subtle proclamation of classical succession, crafted their national personification Columbia from the mold of Athena. From the Civil War until the First World War, Americans called on Columbia to symbolically sanction and spectacularize their own imperial ascent. This paper explores the American adaptation of Greco-Roman rhetoric through the mediums of cartoons, sculptures, and paintings in order to reveal the ancient roots …

Deep Learning Frameworks For Biological Data Integration And Generation, Alexa Beachum Apr 2026

Deep Learning Frameworks For Biological Data Integration And Generation, Alexa Beachum

Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations

Data integration represents a key area of research for analyzing the rapidly growing volume of high-dimensional biological data across sources, stages, and modalities. To model and understand these complex, often non-linear relationships, deep learning has become an increasingly powerful tool. Here, we present two novel deep learning frameworks that address distinct but complementary integration challenges. The first framework aligns single-cell omics data across temporal stages, and the second bridges imaging and omics modalities to generate patient-level molecular profiles.

In Chapter 1, we briefly summarize existing approaches---both statistical and deep learning-based---for single-cell omics data integration and discuss their limitations for handling …

The Sentience Of The Horse And The Philosophy Of Natural Horsemanship: Implications For Hrd Leadership, Rob E. Carpenter Apr 2026

The Sentience Of The Horse And The Philosophy Of Natural Horsemanship: Implications For Hrd Leadership, Rob E. Carpenter

Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper advances a biologically grounded philosophy of leadership through the lens of Natural Horsemanship. It reframes leadership as an embodied, sentient process rather than a purely cognitive or behavioral construct. Drawing from neuroscience, affective biology, sociology, and human resource development (HRD), it proposes that the horse–human relationship provides a living model for relational intelligence. The horse’s exquisite attunement to human emotion— mediated through limbic regulation and bio-behavioral synchrony—reveals that influence arises not from authority but from coherence. Leadership, like horsemanship, is a reciprocal act of co-regulation in which trust, safety, and communication are revealed through physiology before language. By …

A Player Centered Design Method For Spatial Reuse, Franklin (Yuhao) Wu Apr 2026

A Player Centered Design Method For Spatial Reuse, Franklin (Yuhao) Wu

Level Design Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates spatial reuse in single-player level design through the lens of Self-Determination Theory (SDT), addressing two core challenges: excessive repetition and player disorientation. To resolve these challenges, five best practices are proposed: mixing new and reused content at a macro level, establishing clear spatial identities, varying gameplay upon revisits, altering flow within reused spaces, and leaving visible signs of player impact. These practices were applied in a custom-built quest level for Starfield and evaluated through playtesting combining behavioural observation and surveys. Results suggest that distinctive spatial identities and varied combat encounters were the most effective in creating meaningful …

The January 2016 issue appropriately began with two articles in homage to Prof. Del Duca.3

Totality: An Eclipse, Cassidy E. Haines Apr 2026

Totality: An Eclipse, Cassidy E. Haines

Student Publications

The title of this collection, Totality: An Eclipse, and the titles of each of its three sections (“First Contact,” “Second Contact,” and “Third Contact”) combine to help illustrate my experience with grief as a solar eclipse: totality is the maximum phase of a total solar eclipse; first contact is when the sun just begins to disappear in the sky; second contact is when there is complete darkness in the sky; and third contact is when daylight finally returns. I began this project in the months after my father died in December 2024, following a terminal cancer diagnosis. Then, my mother …

Women At Work: Women In Economic Crises In German Film, Anthony J. Capone Apr 2026

Women At Work: Women In Economic Crises In German Film, Anthony J. Capone

Student Publications

The films Joyless Street (1925), The Marriage of Maria Braun (1979), and The Drifter (2010) depict the influence of economic crises in restricting women’s flexibility and the shaping of their social roles. Through the themes of survival, resistance, and agency, the female protagonists navigate the economic hardships such as scarcity, poverty, and unemployment by using labor, sexuality, and personal relationships. Spanning the eras of post-World War 1, the Wirtschaftswunder, and the late 2000s, these women emerge as individuals, who are not weak, but rather constrained by the economic structures of their society.

A Palatable Identity: Turkish-German Integration Through Cuisine, Film And Hip-Hop, Thomas Goldsborough Apr 2026

A Palatable Identity: Turkish-German Integration Through Cuisine, Film And Hip-Hop, Thomas Goldsborough

Student Publications

This paper explores how Turkish-German identity is constructed and negotiated through cultural production in contemporary Germany. It argues that belonging is shaped less by formal political inclusion than by processes of visibility, commodification, and marketability. Through case studies of döner kebab culture, Turkish-German cinema, and hip-hop, the paper shows how minority identity is made legible to the mainstream by being aestheticized and adapted to familiar forms. While these processes enable recognition and creative expression, they also reveal how acceptance is often contingent on profitability and cultural “palatability” rather than genuine social integration.

Book Review - Olympic Outliers: Brisbane 2032 And The Future Of The Olympic Games, Robert Sroka Apr 2026

Book Review - Olympic Outliers: Brisbane 2032 And The Future Of The Olympic Games, Robert Sroka

Global Sport Business Journal

This book review examines Olympic Outliers: Brisbane 2032 and the Future of the Olympic Games by Peter English, a multidisciplinary analysis of Brisbane's  appointment as host of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The book argues that Brisbane's selection as a mid-sized, regionally focused outlier host reflects a turning point in the Olympic Movement driven by IOC governance reform, shifting geopolitics, and a scarcity of competing megacity bids. Evaluated across four chapters addressing bidding history, legacy planning, media framing, and broader implications for future host selection, the book demonstrates considerable scholarly and practical value. Drawing on robust primary and secondary …

Evaluation Of Seal!Nd: School Year 2024-2025, Shawnda Schroeder, Rashid Ahmad

Indigenous Health Faculty Publications

Dr. Schroeder and Rashid worked with the team at the Oral Health Program to collect data on the clinical reach of the School-based Sealant program (SEAL!ND), the referral practices, dental sealant cost savings, and perceptions of school personnel regarding their experiences with the program. SEAL!ND continues to make a measurable difference in improving children’s oral health by increasing access to preventive care, reducing barriers for families, and supporting schools in meeting the needs of their students. The program’s impact is reflected not only in the thousands of services provided each year, but also in the strong satisfaction and gratitude expressed …

Who Votes Yes For Local Solar Energy? Evidence From An Exit Poll, Vasundhara Gaur, Corey Lang Apr 2026

Who Votes Yes For Local Solar Energy? Evidence From An Exit Poll, Vasundhara Gaur, Corey Lang

Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Working Papers

Social acceptance of solar energy is critical to understand as society broadly wants to transition to renewable energy, but specific projects face significant hurdles. We study a municipal referendum that decided the fate of a particular utility-scale solar project and take advantage of this consequential setting to better understand how individual beliefs and socioeconomic factors affect support. On Election Day, we conducted an exit poll survey and collected responses from 504 voters. Regression results indicate that trust in government, belief in anthropogenic climate change, and positive attitudes about solar energy in general are all strongly and positively related to approval. …

Redefining Purpose: The Effect Of The 2019 Business Roundtable Statement On Corporate Tax Strategies, Sadok El Ghoul, Rana Jamshed, Omrane Guedhami Apr 2026

Redefining Purpose: The Effect Of The 2019 Business Roundtable Statement On Corporate Tax Strategies, Sadok El Ghoul, Rana Jamshed, Omrane Guedhami

Faculty Publications

Business Roundtable (BRT) firms have faced intense scrutiny from investors, media, and the public following their 2019 “Statement on the Purpose of a Corporation,” which marked a shift from shareholder-centric governance to a stakeholder-focused approach. This shift has sparked debate over whether BRT firms are genuinely committed to social responsibility or merely using it as a branding strategy without implementing meaningful changes. This paper contributes to the debate by empirically examining a key dimension of social responsibility—corporate tax behavior. Using a difference-in-difference analysis covering 2004–2022, we find that BRT firms engage in higher levels of tax avoidance than other publicly …

Piercing The Algorithmic Fog Of War: Ai-Enabled Decision-Support Systems And The Responsibility Gap For War Crimes Under The Rome Statute, Karen H. Cho Apr 2026

Piercing The Algorithmic Fog Of War: Ai-Enabled Decision-Support Systems And The Responsibility Gap For War Crimes Under The Rome Statute, Karen H. Cho

UC Law SF International Law Review

This article examines how the integration of artificial intelligence-enabled decision-support systems (AI-DSS) into military conflict complicates the attribution of individual criminal responsibility for war crimes under the Rome Statute. Unlike lethal autonomous weapons systems which are intended to supplant human agency, AI-DSS augments human decision-making across the targeting cycle while simultaneously introducing opacity and bias. These characteristics risk facilitating indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks, undermining t4he principles of distinction and proportionality under international humanitarian law. Through a case study of Israel’s deployment of systems such as “the Gospel,” “Lavender,” and “Where’s Daddy?” in Gaza, this article illustrates how algorithmic mediation obscures …

The Romantic Movement As A Love Letter To Life, Mazzie Mcfadden Apr 2026

The Romantic Movement As A Love Letter To Life, Mazzie Mcfadden

Hare & Bell Writing Contest

While the Romantic Movement of poetry could be described in many words, “insignificant” is not one of them.

With such an expansive artistic movement, there was no doubt that these ideals would lead to the creation of poetry that would both define and outlive the time in which it was written. This article that posits three poems of the Romantic Movement that have achieved this, which include “Ode to a Nightingale” and “When I Have Fears that I May Cease to Be” by John Keats and “Ozymandias” by Percy Bysshe Shelley, due to how each used nature as a bridge …

Affordable Housing Cooperatives As Shared Equity Homeownership: Part Ii – Organizational Law, Resource Governance And A Corrective-Distributive Approach, Jerome Hughes Apr 2026

Affordable Housing Cooperatives As Shared Equity Homeownership: Part Ii – Organizational Law, Resource Governance And A Corrective-Distributive Approach, Jerome Hughes

Georgia State University Law Review

Part II of this Article deepens the expanded view of organizational law developed in Part I with a focus on its distributive features. Using the analytical framework of entity governance, resource governance, and use and purpose governance, Part II demonstrates how these dimensions of organizational law interact to constrain the development of affordable housing cooperatives. What are commonly framed as financing problems in fact expose fundamental tensions embedded within the organizational law of affordable housing cooperatives. This analysis demonstrates that these challenges arise from the structuring of resource governance in affordable housing cooperatives and their interaction with the personal economic …

Prescribing Drug Advertising Regulations In The Age Of Social Media, Robin Stein Apr 2026

Prescribing Drug Advertising Regulations In The Age Of Social Media, Robin Stein

Georgia State University Law Review

Social media has changed from platforms created to share life moments with friends to sharing life moments with nationwide followers—and making money from it. Any post could be an advertisement subtly made to sell a product to consumers, and now, the pharmaceutical industry is investing in this form of advertising as well. The Federal Trade Commission has been ramping up its regulation of endorsements and influencer advertisements on social media, but the Food and Drug Administration still has the authority to oversee prescription drug advertising, and it has been specifically focusing on television and radio advertisements in recent years. With …

Salmonella In Poultry: Tackling An Age-Old Issue In An Evolving Era Of Agency Scrutiny, Samantha Girschick Apr 2026

Salmonella In Poultry: Tackling An Age-Old Issue In An Evolving Era Of Agency Scrutiny, Samantha Girschick

Georgia State University Law Review

The Supreme Court’s decision in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo marks the end of Chevron deference and fundamentally reshapes the administrative law landscape. In its wake, agencies must now defend regulatory action without the benefit of the judiciary’s longstanding presumption in favor of that agency’s statutory interpretations. Against this backdrop, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) attempted to classify certain strains and quantities of Salmonella as adulterants under the Poultry Products Inspection Act (PPIA)—an interpretation that marked a sharp departure from decades of prior agency position. Although the proposed rule was withdrawn before finalization by the Trump Administration, unresolved …

Child Custody Presumptions: From Fault And Gender To Equal Time, Thomas James Apr 2026

Child Custody Presumptions: From Fault And Gender To Equal Time, Thomas James

Georgia State University Law Review

For most of history, judges have applied fault- and sex-based presumptions to decide the kinds of custody arrangements that are in children’s best interests. Now that those have been eliminated, courts have no clear guidance for deciding the custody of children other than a vague directive to do what is “best.” Legislatures have enacted non-exclusive lists of suggested factors to consider, but these statutes are frequently as vaguely worded as the “best interest” directive. Because precatory words inserted into statutes with the intention of guiding a judge’s discretion are not binding, they do not provide a basis for appellate review. …
